We study d-dimensional generalizations of three mutually related topics in graph theory: Hamiltonian paths, (unit) interval graphs, and binomial edge ideals. We provide partial high-dimensional generalizations of Ore and Posa's sufficient conditions for a graph to be Hamiltonian. We introduce a hierarchy of combinatorial properties for simplicial complexes that generalize unit-interval, interval, and co-comparability graphs. We connect these properties to the already existing notions of determinantal facet ideals and Hamiltonian paths in simplicial complexes. Some important consequences of our work are:
(1) Every almost-closed strongly-connected d-dimensional simplicial complex is traceable. (This extends the well-known result "unit-interval connected graphs are traceable".)
(2) Every almost-closed d-complex that remains strongly connected after the deletion of d or less vertices, is Hamiltonian. (This extends the fact that "unit-interval 2-connected graphs are Hamiltonian".)
(3) Unit-interval complexes are characterized, among traceable complexes, by the property that the minors defining their determinantal facet ideal form a Groebner basis for a diagonal term order which is compatible with the traceability of the complex. (This corrects a recent theorem by Ene et al., extends a result by Herzog and others, and partially answers a question by Almousa-Vandebogert.)
(4) Only the d-skeleton of the simplex has a determinantal facet ideal with linear resolution. (This extends the result by Kiani and Saeedi-Madani that "only the complete graph has a binomial edge ideal with linear resolution".)
(5) The determinantal facet ideals of all under-closed and semi-closed complexes have a square-free initial ideal with respect to lex. In characteristic p, they are even F-pure.
We consider ideals generated by general sets of $m$-minors of an $m\times n$-matrix of indeterminates. The generators are identified with the facets of an $(m-1)$-dimensional pure simplicial complex. The ideal generated by the minors corresponding to the facets of such a complex is called a determinantal facet ideal. Given a pure simplicial complex $Δ$, we discuss the question when the generating minors of its determinantal facet ideal $J_Δ$ form a Gröbner basis and when $J_Δ$ is a prime ideal.
Let $X$ be an $(m\times n)$-matrix of indeterminates, and let $J$ be the ideal generated by a set $\mathcal{S}$ of maximal minors of $X$. We construct the linear strand of the resolution of $J$. This linear strand is determined by the clique complex of the $m$-clutter corresponding to the set $\mathcal{S}$. As a consequence one obtains explicit formulas for the graded Betti numbers $β_{i,i+m}(J)$ for all $i\geq 0$. We also determine all sets $\mathcal{S}$ for which $J$ has a linear resolution.
We use the definition of a simplicial cycle to define an odd-cycle-free facet complex (hypergraph). These are facet complexes that do not contain any cycles of odd length. We show that besides one class of such facet complexes, all of them satisfy the König property. This new family of complexes includes the family of balanced hypergraphs, which are known to satisfy the König property. These facet complexes are, however, not Mengerian; we give an example to demonstrate this fact.
Let $L_n$ be a line graph with $n$ edges and $\F(L_n)$ the facet ideal of its matching complex. In this paper, we provide the irreducible decomposition of $\F(L_n)$ and some exact formulas for the projective dimension and the regularity of $\F(L_n)$.
This is a survey article on Gorenstein initial complexes of extensively studied ideals in commutative algebra and algebraic geometry. These include defining ideals of Segre and Veronese varieties, toric deformations of flag varieties known as Hibi ideals, determinantal ideals of generic matrices of indeterminates, and ideals generated by Pfaffians of generic skew symmetric matrices. We give a summary of recent work on the construction of squarefree Gorenstein initial ideals of these ideals when the ideals are themselves Gorenstein. We also present our own independent results for the Segre, Ver…
The paper studies the connectivity properties of facet graphs of simplicial complexes of combinatorial interest. In particular, it is shown that the facet graphs of $d$-cycles, $d$-hypertrees and $d$-hypercuts are, respectively, $(d+1)$, $d$, and $(n-d-1)$-vertex-connected. It is also shown that the facet graph of a $d$-cycle cannot be split into more than $s$ connected components by removing at most $s$ vertices. In addition, the paper discusses various related issues, as well as an extension to cell-complexes.
Despite the more handy terminology of abstract simplicial complexes SC, in its core this article is about antitone Boolean functions. Given the maximal faces (=facets) of SC, our main algorithm, called Facets-To-Faces, outputs SC in a compressed format. The degree of compression of Facets-To-Faces, which is programmed in high-level Mathematica code, compares favorably to both the Mathematica command BooleanConvert, and to the BDD's provided by Python. A novel way to calculate the face-numbers from the facets is also presented. Both algorithms can be parallelized and are applicable (e.g.) to re…
In this paper we study simplicial complexes as higher dimensional graphs in order to produce algebraic statements about their facet ideals. We introduce a large class of square-free monomial ideals with Cohen-Macaulay quotients, and a criterion for the Cohen-Macaulayness of facet ideals of simplicial trees. Along the way, we generalize several concepts from graph theory to simplicial complexes.
Let X,Y be finite sets and T a set of functions from X -> Y which we will call "tableaux". We define a simplicial complex whose facets, all of the same dimension, correspond to these tableaux. Such "tableau complexes" have many nice properties, and are frequently homeomorphic to balls, which we prove using vertex decompositions. In our motivating example, the facets are labeled by semistandard Young tableaux, and the more general interior faces are labeled by Buch's set-valued semistandard tableaux. One vertex decomposition of this "Young tableau complex" parallels Lascoux's transition formula…
We investigate generalized notions of the nerve complex for the facets of a simplicial complex. We show that the homologies of these higher nerve complexes determine the depth of the Stanley-Reisner ring $k[Δ]$ as well as the $f$-vector and $h$-vector of $Δ$. We present, as an application, a formula for computing regularity of monomial ideals.
To a simplicial complex, we associate a square-free monomial ideal in the polynomial ring generated by its vertex set over a field. We study algebraic properties of this ideal via combinatorial properties of the simplicial complex. By generalizing the notion of a tree from graphs to simplicial complexes, we show that ideals associated to trees satisfy sliding depth condition, and therefore have normal and Cohen-Macaulay Rees rings. We also discuss connections with the theory of Stanley-Reisner rings.
We investigate Rees algebras and special fiber rings obtained by blowing up specialized Ferrers ideals. This class of monomial ideals includes strongly stable monomial ideals generated in degree two and edge ideals of prominent classes of graphs. We identify the equations of these blow-up algebras. They generate determinantal ideals associated to subregions of a generic symmetric matrix, which may have holes. Exhibiting Gröbner bases for these ideals and using methods from Gorenstein liaison theory, we show that these determinantal rings are normal Cohen-Macaulay domains that are Koszul, that …
A k-dimensional hypertree X is a k-dimensional complex on n vertices with a full (k-1)-dimensional skeleton and \binom{n-1}{k} facets such that H_k(X;Q)=0. Here we introduce the following family of simplicial complexes. Let n,k be integers with k+1 and n relatively prime, and let A be a (k+1)-element subset of the cyclic group Z_n. The sum complex X_A is the pure k-dimensional complex on the vertex set Z_n whose facets are subsets σof Z_n such that |σ|=k+1 and \sum_{x \in σ}x \in A. It is shown that if n is prime then the complex X_A is a k-hypertree for every choice of A. On the other hand, f…
We prove that the family of facets of a pure simplicial complex of dimension up to three satisfies the Erdős-Ko-Rado property whenever it is flag and has no boundary ridges. We conjecture the same to be true in arbitrary dimension and give evidence for this conjecture. Our motivation is that complexes with these two properties include flag pseudo-manifolds and cluster complexes.
The shellability status of previously investigated simplicial complexes with up to 24 facets is settled. In case of shellability the exact number of shellings is determined. Our algorithm merely relies on the facets, and not on additional information such as the face-numbers.
The {\em perfect matching complex} of a graph is the simplicial complex on the edge set of the graph with facets corresponding to perfect matchings of the graph. This paper studies the perfect matching complexes, $\mathcal{M}_p(H_{k \times m\times n})$, of honeycomb graphs. For $k = 1$, $\mathcal{M}_p(H_{1\times m\times n})$ is contractible unless $n\ge m=2$, in which case it is homotopy equivalent to the $(n-1)$-sphere. Also, $\mathcal{M}_p(H_{2\times 2\times 2})$ is homotopy equivalent to the wedge of two 3-spheres. The proofs use discrete Morse theory.
A multigraph is a nonsimple graph which is permitted to have multiple edges, that is, edges that have the same end nodes. We introduce the concept of spanning simplicial complexes $Δ_s(\mathcal{G})$ of multigraphs $\mathcal{G}$, which provides a generalization of spanning simplicial complexes of associated simple graphs. We give first the characterization of all spanning trees of a uni-cyclic multigraph $\mathcal{U}_{n,m}^r$ with $n$ edges including $r$ multiple edges within and outside the cycle of length $m$. Then, we determine the facet ideal $I_\mathcal{F}(Δ_s(\mathcal{U}_{n,m}^r))$ of spa…
The question of shellability of complexes of directed trees was asked by R. Stanley. D. Kozlov showed that the existence of a complete source in a directed graph provides a shelling of its complex of directed trees. We will show that this property gives a shelling that is straightforward in some sense. Among the simplicial polytopes, only the crosspolytopes allow such a shelling. Furthermore, we show that the complex of directed trees of a complete double directed graph is a union of suitable spheres. We also investigate shellability of the maximal pure skeleton of a complex of directed trees.…
A graph associahedron is a polytope dual to a simplicial complex whose elements are induced connected subgraphs called tubes. Graph associahedra generalize permutahedra, associahedra, and cyclohedra, and therefore are of great interest to those who study Coxeter combinatorics. This thesis characterizes nested complexes of simplicial complexes, which we call $Δ$-nested complexes. From here, we can define P-nestohedra by truncating simple polyhedra, and in more specificity define P-graph associahedra, which are realized by repeated truncation of faces of simple polyhedra in accordance with tubes…
