This paper investigates coherent-like conditions and related properties that a trivial extension might inherit from the ground ring over some classes of modules. It captures previous results dealing primarily with coherence, and also establishes satisfactory analogues of well-known coherence-like results on pullback constructions. Our results generate new families of examples of rings (with zerodivisors) subject to a given coherent-like condition.
The notion of trivial extension of a ring by a module has been extensively studied and used in ring theory as well as in various other areas of research like cohomology theory, representation theory, category theory and homological algebra. In this paper we extend this classical ring construction by associating a ring to a ring $R$ and a family $M=(M_i)_{i=1}^{n}$ of $n$ $R$-modules for a given integer $n\geq 1$. We call this new ring construction an $n$-trivial extension of $R$ by $M$. In particular, the classical trivial extension will be just the $1$-trivial extension. Thus we generalize se…
This paper partly settles a conjecture of Costa on (n,d)-rings, i.e., rings in which n-presented modules have projective dimension at most d. For this purpose, a theorem studies the transfer of the (n,d)-property to trivial extensions of local rings by their residue fields. It concludes with a brief discussion -backed by original examples- of the scopes and limits of our results.
In this paper we investigate a categorical aspect of $n$-trivial extension of a ring by a family of modules. Namely, we introduce the right (resp., left) $n$-trivial extension of a category by a family of endofunctors. Among other results, projective, injective and flat objects of this category are characterized. We end the paper with two applications. We characterize when an $n$-trivial extension ring is $k$-perfect and we establish a result on the selfinjective dimension of an $n$-trivial extension ring.
Let A be a commutative ring and E a non-zero A-module. Necessary and sufficient conditions are given for the trivial ring extension R of A by E to be either arithmetical or Gaussian. The possibility for R to be B{é}zout is also studied, but a response is only given in the case where pSpec A (a quotient space of Spec} A) is totally disconnected. Trivial ring extensions which are fqp-rings are characterized only in the local case. To get a general result we intoduce the class of fqf-rings satisfying a weaker property than fqp-ring. Moreover, it is proven that the finitistic weak dimension of a f…
In this paper, we show that the Gorenstein global dimension of trivial ring extensions is often infinite. Also we study the transfer of Gorenstein properties between a ring and its trivial ring extensions. We conclude with an example showing that, in general, the transfer of the notion of Gorenstein projective module does not carry up to pullback constructions.
Our goal is to determine when the trivial extensions of commutative rings by modules are Cohen-Macaulay in the sense of Hamilton and Marley. For this purpose, we provide a generalization of the concept of Cohen-Macaulayness of rings to modules.
This paper contributes to the study of homological aspects of trivial ring extensions (also called Nagata idealizations). Namely, we investigate the transfer of the notion of (Matlis') semi-regular ring (also known as IF-ring) along with related concepts, such as coherence, in trivial ring extensions issued from integral domains. All along the paper, we put the new results in use to enrich the literature with new families of examples subject to semi-regularity.
Conditions on the Koszul complex of a noetherian local ring $R$ guarantee that $\mathrm{Tor}^{R}_{i}(M,N)$ is non-zero for infinitely many $i$, when $M$ and $N$ are finitely generated $R$-modules of infinite projective dimension. These conditions are obtained from results concerning Tor of differential graded modules over certain trivial extensions of commutative differential graded algebras.
Let $R$ be a commutative ring with identity and $T(R)$ its total quotient ring. We extend the notion of well-centered overring of an integral domain to an arbitrary commutative ring and we investigate the transfer of this property to different extensions of commutative rings in both integral and non-integral cases. Namely in pullbacks and trivial extensions. Our aim is to provide new classes of commutative rings satisfying this property and to shed light on some open questions raised by Heinzer and Roitman in \cite{HR}.
This paper deals with well-known extensions of the Prufer domain concept to arbitrary commutative rings. We investigate the transfer of these notions in trivial ring extensions (also called idealizations) of commutative rings by modules and then generate original families of rings with zerodivisors subject to various Prufer conditions. The new examples give further evidence for the validity of Bazzoni-Glaz conjecture on the weak dimension of Gaussian rings. Moreover, trivial ring extensions allow us to widen the scope of validity of Kaplansky-Tsang conjecture on the content ideal of Gaussian p…
Let X be a projective scheme; let M and N be two coherent O_X-modules. Given an integer m, we present an algorithm for computing the global extension module Ext^m(X;M,N). In particular, this allows one to compute the sheaf cohomology H^m(X,N) and to construct the sheaf corresponding to an element of the module Ext^1(X;M,N). This algorithm can be implemented using only the computation of Grobner bases ans syzygies, and it has been implemented in the computer algebra system Macaulay2.
In this paper, we define weakly coherent rings, and examine the transfer of these rings to homomorphic image, trivial ring extension, localization, and direct product. These results provide examples of weakly coherent rings that are not coherent rings. We show that the class of weakly coherent rings is not stable by localization. Also, we show that the class of weakly coherent rings and the class of strongly 2-coherent rings are not comparable.
We classify Artin-Schreier extensions of valued fields with non-trivial defect according to whether they are connected with purely inseparable extensions with non-trivial defect, or not. We use this classification to show that in positive characteristic, a valued field is algebraically complete if and only if it has no proper immediate algebraic extension and every finite purely inseparable extension is defectless. This result is an important tool for the construction of algebraically complete fields. We also consider extremal fields (= fields for which the values of the elements in the images…
A ring $R$ is called left GF-closed, if the class of all Gorenstein flat left $R$-modules is closed under extensions. The class of left GF-closed rings includes strictly the one of right coherent rings and the one of rings of finite weak dimension. In this paper, we investigate the Gorenstein flat dimension over left GF-closed rings. Namely, we generalize the fact that the class of all Gorenstein flat left modules is projectively resolving over right coherent rings to left GF-closed rings. Also, we generalize the characterization of Gorenstein flat left modules (then of Gorenstein flat dimensi…
Let $R$ be a graded ring. We introduce a class of graded $R$-modules called Gröbner-coherent modules. Roughly, these are graded $R$-modules that are coherent as ungraded modules because they admit an adequate theory of Gröbner bases. The class of Gröbner-coherent modules is formally similar to the class of coherent modules: for instance, it is an abelian category closed under extension. However, Gröbner-coherent modules come with tools for effective computation that are not present for coherent modules.
We prove a general version of the "Stability Theorem": if $K$ is a valued field such that the ramification theoretical defect is trivial for all of its finite extensions, and if $F|K$ is a finitely generated (transcendental) extension of valued fields for which equality holds in the Abhyankar inequality, then the defect is also trivial for all finite extensions of $F$. This theorem is applied to eliminate ramification in such valued function fields. It has applications to local uniformization and to the model theory of valued fields in positive characteristic.
In algebraic geometry, one often encounters the following problem: given a scheme X, find a proper birational morphism from Y to X where the geometry of Y is "nicer" than that of X. One version of this problem, first studied by Faltings, requires Y to be Cohen-Macaulay; in this case Y is called a Macaulayfication of X. In another variant, one requires Y to satisfy the Serre condition S_r. In this paper, the authors introduce generalized Serre conditions--these are local cohomology conditions which include S_r and the Cohen-Macaulay condition as special cases. To any generalized Serre condition…
