We develop a new method to deal with the Cancellation Conjecture of Zariski in different environments. We prove the conjecture for free associative algebras of rank two. We also produce a new proof of the conjecture for polynomial algebras of rank two over fields of zero characteristic.
Motivated by the Mathieu conjecture [Ma], the image conjecture [Z3] and the well-known Jacobian conjecture [K] (see also [BCW] and [E]), the notion of Mathieu subspaces as a natural generalization of the notion of ideals has been introduced recently in [Z4] for associative algebras. In this paper, we first study algebraic elements in the radicals of Mathieu subspaces of associative algebras over fields and prove some properties and characterizations of Mathieu subspaces with algebraic radicals. We then give some characterizations or classifications for strongly simple algebras (the algebras wi…
We prove the analog of Amitsur's conjecture on asymptotic behavior for codimensions of several generalizations of polynomial identities for finite dimensional associative algebras over a field of characteristic 0, including G-identities for any finite (not necessarily Abelian) group G and H-identities for a finite dimensional semisimple Hopf algebra H. In addition, we prove that the Hopf PI-exponent of Sweedler's 4-dimensional algebra with the action of its dual equals 4.
In 1992, following earlier conjectures of Lichtman and Makar-Limanov, Klein conjectured that a noncommutative domain must contain a free, multiplicative, noncyclic subsemigroup. He verified the conjecture when the center is uncountable. In this note we consider the existence (or not) of free subsemigroups in associative $k$-algebras $R$, where $k$ is a field not algebraic over a finite subfield. We show that $R$ contains a free noncyclic subsemigroup in the following cases: (1) $R$ satisfies a polynomial identity and is noncommutative modulo its prime radical. (2) $R$ has at least one nonartin…
A short proof is given of the fact that various classes of algebras including the free associative algebra are Hopfian, i.e., every epimorphism is an automorphism. This further simplifies the Dicks-Lewin solution of the Jacobian conjecture for the free associative algebra.
Recently Umirbaev has proved the long-standing Anick conjecture, that is, there exist wild automorphisms of the free associative algebra K<x,y,z> over a field K of characteristic 0. In particular, the well-known Anick automorphism is wild. In this article we obtain a stronger result (the Strong Anick Conjecture that implies the Anick Conjecture). Namely, we prove that there exist wild coordinates of K<x,y,z>. In particular, the two nontrivial coordinates in the Anick automorphism are both wild. We establish a similar result for several large classes of automorphisms of K<x,y,z>. We also find a…
The notion of a non-associative universal enveloping algebra for a Lie triple system arises when Lie triple systems are considered as Bol algebras (more generally, Sabinin algebras). In this paper a new construction for these universal enveloping algebras is given, and their properties are studied. It is shown that universal enveloping algebras of Lie triple systems have surprisingly few ideals. It is conjectured, and the conjecture is verified on several examples, that the only proper ideal of the universal enveloping algebra of a simple Lie triple system is the augmentation ideal.
Feigin and Shoikhet conjectured in math/0610410 that successive quotients $B_m(A_n)$ of the lower central series filtration of a free associative algebra $A_n$ have polynomial growth. In this paper we give a proof of this conjecture, using the structure of $W_n$-representation on $B_m(A_n)$ which was defined in math/0610410 . We also prove that the number of squares in a Young diagram $D$ corresponding to an irreducible $W_n$-module in the Jordan-Holder series of $B_m(A_n)$ is bounded above by the integer $(m-1)^2+2[(n-2)/2](m-1)$. This bound combined with MAGMA computations by Rains in math/0…
We give an accessible introduction into the theory of lower central series of associative algebras, exhibiting the interplay between algebra, geometry and representation theory that is characteristic for this subject, and to discuss some open questions. In particular, we provide shorter and clearer proofs of the main results of this theory. We also discuss some new theoretical and computational results and conjectures on the lower central series of the free algebra in two generators modulo a generic homogeneous relation.
This paper concerns the associative lower central series ideals $M_i$ of the free algebra $A_n$ on $n$ generators. Namely, we study the successive quotients $N_i=M_i/M_{i+1}$, which admit an action of the Lie algebra $W_n$ of vector fields on $\Bbb C^n$. We bound the degree $|λ|$ of tensor field modules $F_λ$ appearing in the Jordan-Hölder series of each $N_i$, confirming a recent conjecture of Arbesfeld and Jordan. As an application, we compute these decompositions for small $n$ and $i$.
Let $F$ be a field and let $F \langle X \rangle$ be the free unital associative algebra over $F$ freely generated by an infinite countable set $X = \{x_1, x_2, \dots \}$. Define a left-normed commutator $[a_1, a_2, \dots, a_n]$ recursively by $[a_1, a_2] = a_1 a_2 - a_2 a_1$, $[a_1, \dots, a_{n-1}, a_n] = [[a_1, \dots, a_{n-1}], a_n]$ $(n \ge 3)$. For $n \ge 2$, let $T^{(n)}$ be the two-sided ideal in $F \langle X \rangle$ generated by all commutators $[a_1, a_2, \dots, a_n]$ ($a_i \in F \langle X \rangle)$. Let $F$ be a field of characteristic $0$. In 2008 Etingof, Kim and Ma conjectured that…
The first (associative) Weyl algebra is formally rigid in the classical sense. In this paper, we show that it can however be formally deformed in a nontrivial way when considered as a so-called hom-associative algebra, and that this deformation preserves properties such as the commuter, while deforming others, such as the center, power associativity, the set of derivations, and some commutation relations. We then show that this deformation induces a formal deformation of the corresponding Lie algebra into what is known as a hom-Lie algebra, when using the commutator as bracket. We also prove t…
For an arbitrary countable field, we construct an associative algebra that is graded, generated by finitely many degree-1 elements, is Jacobson radical, is not nil, is prime, is not PI, and has Gelfand-Kirillov dimension two. This refutes a conjecture attributed to Goodearl.
For n even, we prove Pozhidaev's conjecture on the existence of associative enveloping algebras for simple n-Lie algebras. More generally, for n even and any (n+1)-dimensional n-Lie algebra L, we construct a universal associative enveloping algebra U(L) and show that the natural map from L to U(L) is injective. We use noncommutative Grobner bases to present U(L) as a quotient of the free associative algebra on a basis of L and to obtain a monomial basis of U(L). In the last section, we provide computational evidence that the construction of U(L) is much more difficult for n odd.
We continue the study of the lower central series and its associated graded components for a free associative algebra with n generators, as initiated by B. Feigin and B. Shoikhet. We establish a linear bound on the degree of tensor field modules appearing in the Jordan-Hoelder series of each graded component, which is conjecturally tight. We also bound the leading coefficient of the Hilbert polynomial of each graded component. As applications, we confirm conjectures of P. Etingof and B. Shoikhet concerning the structure of the third graded component.
We prove the existence of the Hopf PI-exponent for finite dimensional associative algebras $A$ with a generalized Hopf action of an associative algebra $H$ with $1$ over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $0$ assuming only the invariance of the Jacobson radical $J(A)$ under the $H$-action and the existence of the decomposition of $A/J(A)$ into the sum of $H$-simple algebras. As a consequence, we show that the analog of Amitsur's conjecture holds for $G$-codimensions of finite dimensional associative algebras over a field of characteristic $0$ with an action of an arbitrary group $…
Suppose a finite dimensional semisimple Lie algebra $\mathfrak g$ acts by derivations on a finite dimensional associative or Lie algebra $A$ over a field of characteristic $0$. We prove the $\mathfrak g$-invariant analogs of Wedderburn - Mal'cev and Levi theorems, and the analog of Amitsur's conjecture on asymptotic behavior for codimensions of polynomial identities with derivations of $A$. It turns out that for associative algebras the differential PI-exponent coincides with the ordinary one. Also we prove the analog of Amitsur's conjecture for finite dimensional associative algebras with an …
We prove that if A is a finite dimensional associative H-comodule algebra over a field F for some involutory Hopf algebra H not necessarily finite dimensional, where either char F = 0 or char F > dim A, then the Jacobson radical J(A) is an H-subcomodule of A. In particular, if A is a finite dimensional associative algebra over such a field F, graded by any group, then the Jacobson radical J(A) is a graded ideal of A. Analogous results hold for nilpotent and solvable radicals of finite dimensional Lie algebras over a field of characteristic 0. We use the results obtained to prove the analog of …
We introduce a new notion of the determinant, called symmetrized determinant, for a square matrix with the entries in an associative algebra $Å$. The monomial expansion of the symmetrized determinant is obtained from the standard expansion of the commutative determinant by averaging the products of entries of the matrix in all possible orders. We show that for any fixed finite-dimensional associative algebra $Å$, the symmetrized determinant of an $n\times n$ matrix with the entries in $Å$ can be computed in polynomial in $n$ time (the degree of the polynomial is linear in the dimension of $Å$)…
Let $k$ be a field and let $A$ be a finitely generated $k$-algebra. The algebra $A$ is said to be cancellative if whenever $B$ is another $k$-algebra with the property that $A[x]\cong B[x]$ then we necessarily have $A\cong B$. An important result of Abhyankar, Eakin, and Heinzer shows that if $A$ is a finitely generated commutative integral domain of Krull dimension one then it is cancellative. We consider the question of cancellation for finitely generated not-necessarily-commutative domains of Gelfand-Kirillov dimension one, and show that such algebras are necessarily cancellative when the c…
A Mathieu-Zhao subspace is a generalization of an ideal of an associative algebra $\mathcal A$ over a unital ring $R$ first formalized in 2010. A vertex algebra is an algebraic structure first developed in conjunction with string theory in the 1960s and later axiomatized by mathematicians in the 1980s. We formally introduce the definition of a Mathieu-Zhao subspace $M$ of a vertex algebra $V$. Building on natural connections to associative algebras, we classify an infinite set of non-trivial, non-ideal Mathieu-Zhao subspaces for simple and general vertex algebras by group action eigenspace dec…
Let W be an associative PI-algebra over a field F of characteristic zero. Suppose W is G-graded where G is a finite group. Let exp(W) and exp(W_e) denote the codimension growth of W and of the identity component W_e, respectively. The following inequality had been conjectured by Bahturin and Zaicev: exp(W)\leq |G|^2 exp(W_e). The inequality is known in case the algebra W is affine (i.e. finitely generated). Here we prove the conjecture in general.
We show how to study a certain associative algebra recently discovered by Iyudu and Shkarin using the Anick resolution. This algebra is a counterexample to the conjecture of Positselski on Koszul algebras of finite global dimension.
We prove the Andruskiewitsch-Dumas conjecture that the automorphism group of the positive part of the quantized universal enveloping algebra $U_q({\mathfrak{g}})$ of an arbitrary finite dimensional simple Lie algebra g is isomorphic to the semidirect product of the automorphism group of the Dynkin diagram of g and a torus of rank equal to the rank of g. The key step in our proof is a rigidity theorem for quantum tori. It has a broad range of applications. It allows one to control the (full) automorphism groups of large classes of associative algebras, for instance quantum cluster algebras.
This is a survey of some recent developments in the theory of associative and nonassociative dialgebras, with an emphasis on polynomial identities and multilinear operations. We discuss associative, Lie, Jordan, and alternative algebras, and the corresponding dialgebras; the KP algorithm for converting identities for algebras into identities for dialgebras; the BSO algorithm for converting operations in algebras into operations in dialgebras; Lie and Jordan triple systems, and the corresponding disystems; and a noncommutative version of Lie triple systems based on the trilinear operation abc-b…
We study the Zariski topology of the ind-groups of polynomial and free associative algebras $\Aut(K[x_1,...,x_n])$ (which is equivalent to the automorphism group of the affine space $\Aut(K^n))$) and $\Aut(K< x_1,..., x_n>$ via $\Ind$-schemes, toric varieties, approximations and singularities. We obtain some nice properties of $\Aut(\Aut(A))$, where $A$ is polynomial or free associative algebra over a field $K$. We prove that all $\Ind$-scheme automorphisms of $\Aut(K[x_1,...,x_n])$ are inner for $n\ge 3$, and all $\Ind$-scheme automorphisms of $\Aut(K< x_1,..., x_n>)$ are semi-inner. We also …
Let W be an associative PI-affine algebra over a field F of characteristic zero. Suppose W is G-graded where G is a finite group. Let exp(W) and exp(W_e) denote the codimension growth of W and of the identity component W_e, respectively. We prove: exp(W) \leq |G|^2 exp(W_e). This inequality had been conjectured by Bahturin and Zaicev.
A linear locally nilpotent derivation of the polynomial algebra $K[X_m]$ in $m$ variables over a field $K$ of characteristic 0 is called a Weitzenböck derivation. It is well known from the classical theorem of Weitzenböck that the algebra of constants $K[X_{m}]^δ$ of a Weitzenböck derivation $δ$ is finitely generated. Assume that $δ$ acts on the polynomial algebra $K[X_{2d}]$ in $2d$ variables as follows: $δ(x_{2i})=x_{2i-1}$, $δ(x_{2i-1})=0$, $i=1,\ldots,d$. The Nowicki conjecture states that the algebra $K[X_{2d}]^δ$ is generated by $x_1,x_3.\ldots,x_{2d-1}$, and $x_{2i-1}x_{2j}-x_{2i}x_{2j-…
Let $L$ be a finite dimensional Lie $F$-algebra endowed with a generalized action by an associative algebra $H$. We investigate the exponential growth rate of the sequence of $H$-graded codimensions $c_n^H(L)$ of $L$ which is a measure for the number of non-polynomial $H$-identities of $L$. More precisely, we construct the first example of an $S$-graded Lie algebra having a non-integer, even irrational, exponential growth rate $\lim_{n\rightarrow \infty} \sqrt[n]{c_n^{S}(L)}$. Hereby $S$ is a semigroup and an exact value is given. On the other hand, returning to general $H$, if $L$ is semisimp…
We introduce the notion of quadri-algebras. These are associative algebras for which the multiplication can be decomposed as the sum of four operations in a certain coherent manner. We present several examples of quadri-algebras: the algebra of permutations, the shuffle algebra, tensor products of dendriform algebras. We show that a pair of commuting Baxter operators on an associative algebra gives rise to a canonical quadri-algebra structure on the underlying space of the algebra. The main example is provided by the algebra End(A) of linear endomorphisms of an infinitesimal bialgebra A. This …
We show that if $A$ is a finite dimensional associative $H$-module algebra for an arbitrary Hopf algebra $H$, then the proof of the analog of Amitsur's conjecture for $H$-codimensions of $A$ can be reduced to the case when $A$ is $H$-simple. (Here we do not require that the Jacobson radical of $A$ is an $H$-submodule.) As an application, we prove that if $A$ is a finite dimensional associative $H$-module algebra where $H$ is a Hopf algebra $H$ over a field of characteristic $0$ such that $H$ is constructed by an iterated Ore extension of a finite dimensional semisimple Hopf algebra by skew-pri…
Consider the free algebra A_n generated over Q by n generators x_1, ..., x_n. Interesting objects attached to A = A_n are members of its lower central series, L_i = L_i(A), defined inductively by L_1 = A, L_{i+1} = [A,L_{i}], and their associated graded components B_i = B_i(A) defined as B_i=L_i/L_{i+1}. These quotients B_i, for i at least 2, as well as the reduced quotient \bar{B}_1=A/(L_2+A L_3), exhibit a rich geometric structure, as shown by Feigin and Shoikhet and later authors, (Dobrovolska-Kim-Ma,Dobrovolska-Etingof,Arbesfeld-Jordan,Bapat-Jordan). We study the same problem over the inte…
In present paper we develop the deformation theory of operads and algebras over operads. Free resolutions (constructed via Boardman-Vogt approach) are used in order to describe formal moduli spaces of deformations. We apply the general theory to the proof of Deligne's conjecture. The latter says that the Hochschild complex of an associative algebra carries a canonical structure of a dg-algebra over the chain operad of the little discs operad. In the course of the proof we construct an operad of geometric nature which acts on the Hochschild complex. It seems to be different from the brace opera…
We continue the study of the lower central series of a free associative algebra, initiated by B. Feigin and B. Shoikhet (arXiv:math/0610410). We generalize via Schur functors the constructions of the lower central series to any symmetric tensor category; specifically we compute the modified first quotient \bar{B}_1, and second and third quotients B_2, and B_3 of the series for a free algebra T(V) in any symmetric tensor category, generalizing the main results of (arXiv:math/0610410) and (arXiv:0902.4899). In the case A_{m|n}:=T(\CC^{m|n}), we use these results to compute the explicit Hilbert s…
First we describe a class of homotopy Frobenius algebras via cyclic operads which we call cyclic $A_\infty$ algebras. We then define a suitable new combinatorial operad which acts on the Hochschild cochains of such an algebra in a manner which encodes the homotopy BV structure. Moreover we show that this operad is equivalent to the cellular chains of a certain topological (quasi)-operad of CW complexes whose constituent spaces form a homotopy associative version of the Cacti operad of Voronov. These cellular chains thus constitute a chain model for the framed little disks operad, proving a cyc…
