The Casselman-Shalika method is a way to compute explicit formulas for periods of irreducible unramified representations of p-adic groups that are associated to unique models (i.e. multiplicity-free induced representations). We apply this method to the case of the Shalika model of GL_n, which is known to distinguish lifts from odd orthogonal groups. In the course of our proof, we further develop a variant of the method, that was introduced by Y.Hironaka, and in effect reduce many such problems to straightforward calculations on the group.
We prove the Casselman-Shalika formula for unramified groups over a non-archimedean local field by studying the action of the spherical Hecke algebra on the space of compact spherical Whittaker functions via the twisted Satake transform. This method provides a conceptual explanation of the appearance of characters of a dual group in the Casselman-Shalika formula.
This paper studies spherical Whittaker functions for central extensions of reductive groups over local fields. We follow the development of Chinta and Offen to produce a metaplectic Casselman-Shalika formula for tame covers of all unramified groups.
For an arbitrary split adjoint group we identify the unramified Whittaker space with the space of skew-invariant functions on the lattice of coweights and deduce from it the Casselman-Shalika formula.
In this paper we establish a Steinberg-Lusztig tensor product theorem for abstract Fock space. This is a generalization of the type A result of Leclerc-Thibon and a Grothendieck group version of the Steinberg-Lusztig tensor product theorem for representations of quantum groups at roots of unity. Although the statement can be phrased in terms of parabolic affine Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials and thus has geometric content, our proof is combinatorial, using the theory of crystals (Littelmann paths). We derive the Casselman-Shalika formula as a consequence of the Steinberg-Lusztig tensor product th…
In the recent works of Brubaker-Bump-Friedberg, Bump-Nakasuji, and others, the product in the Casselman-Shalika formula is written as a sum over a crystal. The coefficient of each crystal element is defined using the data coming from the whole crystal graph structure. In this paper, we adopt the tableaux model for the crystal and obtain the same coefficients using data from each individual tableaux; i.e., we do not need to look at the graph structure. We also show how to combine our results with tensor products of crystals to obtain the sum of coefficients for a given weight. The sum is a q-po…
We present a novel integral representation for a quotient of global automorphic L-functions, the symmetric square over the exterior square. The pole of this integral characterizes a period of a residual representation of an Eisenstein series. As such, the integral itself constitutes a period, of an arithmetic nature. The construction involves the study of local and global aspects of a new model for double covers of general linear groups, the metaplectic Shalika model. In particular, we prove uniqueness results over p-adic and Archimedean fields, and a new Casselman-Shalika type formula.
For a reductive group $G$ over a non-Archimedean local field (e.g $GL_n( \mathbb{Q}_p )$ ), Jacquet's Whittaker function is essentially proportional to a character of an irreducible representation of the Langlands dual group $G^\vee( \mathbb{C} )$ ( a Schur function if $G = GL_n( \mathbb{Q}_p )$). We propose a probabilistic approach to this claim, known as the Shintani-Casselman-Shalika formula, when the group $G$ has at least one minuscule cocharacter in the coweight lattice. Our presentation goes along the following lines. Thanks to a minuscule random walk $W^{(z)}$ on the coweight lattice a…
We study local multiplicities associated to the so-called generalized Shalika models. By establishing a local trace formula for these kind of models, we are able to prove a multiplicity formula for discrete series. As a result, we can show that these multiplicities are constant over every discrete Vogan $L$-packet and that they are related to local exterior square $L$-functions.
Let πbe a cuspidal automorphic representation of GL_4 with central character μ^2. It is known that πhas Shalika period with respect to μif and only if the L-function L^S(s, π, \bigwedge^2\otimesμ^{-1}) has a pole at s=1. Recentlt, Jacquet and Martin considered the analogous question for cuspidal representations π_D of the inner form GL_2(D)(\A), and obtained a partial result via the relative trace formula. In this paper, we provide a complete solution to this problem via the method of theta correspondence, and give necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of Shalika period for π_D…
We obtain explicit formulas for the product of a deformed Weyl denominator with the character of an irreducible representation of the spin group $\rm{Spin}_{2r+1}({\mathbb C})$, which is an analogue of the formulas of Tokuyama for Schur polynomials and Hamel-King for characters of symplectic groups. To give these, we start with a symplectic group and obtain such characters using the Casselman-Shalika formula. We then analyze this using objects which are naturally attached to the metaplectic double cover of an odd orthogonal group, which also has dual group $\rm{Spin}_{2r+1}({\mathbb C})$.
The authors establish the fundamental lemma for a relative trace formula. This trace formula compares generic automorphic representations of GSp$(4)$ with automorphic representations of GL$(4)$ which are distinguished with respect to a character of the Shalika subgroup, the subgroup of matrices of $2\times 2$ block form $$ \pmatrix g&0\\0&g\endpmatrix \pmatrix I&0\\X&O\endpmatrix. $$ The fundamental lemma, giving the equality of two orbital integrals, amounts to a comparison of certain exponential sums arising from these two different groups. On the GSp$(4)$ side one has the Kloosterman sums f…
In this article, for nilpotent orbits of ramified quasi-split unitary groups with two Jordan blocks, we give closed formulas for their Shalika germs at certain equi-valued elements with half-integral depth previously studied by Hales. These elements are parametrized by hyperelliptic curves defined over the residue field, and the numbers we obtain can be expressed in terms of Frobenius eigenvalues on the $\ell$-adic $H^1$ of the curves, generalizing previous result of Hales on stable subregular Shalika germs. These Shalika germ formulas imply new results on stability and endoscopic transfer of …
Intertwining operators play an essential role and appear everywhere in the Langlands program, their analytic properties interact directly, yet deeply with the decomposition of parabolic induction locally and the residues of Eisenstein series globally. Inspired by the profound Langlands-Shahidi theory, Casselman-Shahidi conjectured that a certain normalization factor would govern the singularity of intertwining operators for generic standard modules. Indeed, motivated by the theory of theta correspondence, especially the Siegel-Weil formula globally, and the composition problem of degenerate pr…
We show that Fourier coefficients of automorphic forms attached to minimal or next-to-minimal automorphic representations of ${\mathrm{SL}}_n(\mathbb{A})$ are completely determined by certain highly degenerate Whittaker coefficients. We give an explicit formula for the Fourier expansion, analogously to the Piatetski-Shapiro-Shalika formula. In addition, we derive expressions for Fourier coefficients associated to all maximal parabolic subgroups. These results have potential applications for scattering amplitudes in string theory.
We consider a category of continuous Hilbert space representations and a category of smooth Frechet representations, of a real Jacobi group $G$. By Mackey's theory, they are respectively equivalent to certain categories of representations of a real reductive group $\widetilde L$. Within these categories, we show that the two functors of taking smooth vectors for $G$, and for $\widetilde L$, are consistent with each other. By using Casselman-Wallach's theory of smooth representations of real reductive groups, we define matrix coefficients for distributional vectors of certain representations of…
Let d and m be two natural numbers of distinct parities. Let $π$ be an admissible irreducible tempered representation of GL(d,F), where F is a p-adic field. We assume that $π$ is self-dual. Then we can extend $π$ as a representation $\tildeπ$ of a non-connected group $GL(d,F)\rtimes \{1,θ\}$. Let $ρ$ be a representation of GL(m,F). We assume that it has similar properties as $π$. Jacquet, Piatetski-Shapiro and Shalika have defined the factor $ε(s,π\timesρ,ψ)$. We prove that we can compute $ε(1/2,π\timesρ,ψ)$ by an integral formula where occur the characters of $\tildeπ$ and $\tildeρ$. It's sim…
The character formulas of Sally and Shalika are an early triumph in $p$-adic harmonic analysis, but, to date, the calculations underlying the formulas have not been available. In this paper, which should be viewed as a precursor of the forthcoming volume by the authors and Alan Roche, we leverage modern technology (for example, the Moy-Prasad theory) to compute explicit character tables. An interesting highlight is the computation of the 'exceptional' supercuspidal characters, i.e., those depth-zero representations not arising by inflation-induction from a Deligne-Lusztig representation of fin…
Our main theorem describes the degree 0 cohomology of Igusa varieties in terms of one-dimensional automorphic representations in the setup of mod p Hodge-type Shimura varieties with hyperspecial level at p, mirroring the well known analogue for complex Shimura varieties. As an application, we obtain a completely new approach to two geometric questions. (See Sect. 1.5 for a comparison with independent results by van Hoften and Xiao via a different approach.) Firstly, we verify the discrete part of the Hecke orbit conjecture, which amounts to irreducibility of central leaves, generalizing preced…
In this paper we analyze Fourier coefficients of automorphic forms on a finite cover $G$ of an adelic split simply-laced group. Let $π$ be a minimal or next-to-minimal automorphic representation of $G$. We prove that any $η\in π$ is completely determined by its Whittaker coefficients with respect to (possibly degenerate) characters of the unipotent radical of a fixed Borel subgroup, analogously to the Piatetski-Shapiro--Shalika formula for cusp forms on $GL_n$. We also derive explicit formulas expressing the form, as well as all its maximal parabolic Fourier coefficient in terms of these Whitt…
