We provide a micro-local necessary condition for distinction of admissible representations of real reductive groups in the context of spherical pairs.
Let $\bf G$ be a complex algebraic reductive group, and $\bf H\subset G$ be a spherical algebraic subgroup. Let $\mathfrak{g},\mathfrak{h}$ denote the Lie algebras of $\bf G$ and $\bf H$, and let $\mathfrak{h}^{\bot}$ denote the annihilator of $\mathfrak{h}$ in $\mathfrak{g}^*$. A $\mathfrak{g}$-module is called $\mathfrak{h}$-distinguished if it admits a non-zero $\mathfrak{h}$-invariant functional. We show that the maximal $\bf G$-orbit in the annihilator variety of any irreducible $\mathfrak{h}$-distinguished $\mathfrak{g}$-module intersects $\mathfrak{h}^{\bot}$. This generalizes a result of Vogan.
We apply this to Casselman-Wallach representations of real reductive groups to obtain information on branching problems, translation functors and Jacquet modules. Further, we prove in many cases that as suggested by Prasad, if $H$ is a symmetric subgroup of a real reductive group $G$, the existence of a tempered $H$-distinguished representation of $G$ implies the existence of a generic $H$-distinguished representation of $G$.
Many models studied in the theory of automorphic forms involve an additive character on the unipotent radical of $\bf H$, and we devised a twisted version of our theorem that yields necessary conditions for the existence of those mixed models. Our method of proof here is inspired by the theory of W-algebras. As an application we derive necessary conditions for the existence of Rankin-Selberg, Bessel, Klyachko and Shalika models. Our results are compatible with the recent Gan-Gross-Prasad conjectures for non-generic representations.
We also prove more general results that ease the sphericity assumption on the subgroup, and apply them to local theta correspondence in type II and to degenerate Whittaker models.
The set of strata of a reductive group can be viewed as an enlargement of the set of unipotent classes. In this paper the notion of distinguished unipotent class is extended to this larger set. The strata of a Weyl group are introduced and studied.
Let $G$ be a complex reductive group and $H=G^θ$ be its fixed point subgroup under a Galois involution $θ$. We show that any $H$-distinguished representation $π$ (i.e $\mathrm{dim}_{\mathbb{C}}\left(π^{*}\right)^{H}\neq0$) satisfies: 1) $π^θ\simeq\tildeπ$, where $\tildeπ$ is the contragredient representation and $π^θ$ is the twist of $π$ under $θ$. 2) $\mathrm{dim}_{\mathbb{C}}\left(π^{*}\right)^{H}\leq\left|B\backslash G/H\right|$, where $B$ is a Borel subgroup of $G$. By proving Statement 1), we give a partial answer to a conjecture by Lapid.
Let $G$ be a real reductive Lie group and $τ:G \longrightarrow GL(V)$ be a real reductive representation of $G$ with (restricted) moment map $m_{\ggo}: V-{0} \longrightarrow \ggo$. In this work, we introduce the notion of "nice space" of a real reductive representation to study the problem of how to determine if a $G$-orbit is "distinguished" (i.e. it contains a critical point of the norm squared of $m_{\ggo}$). We give an elementary proof of the well-known convexity theorem of Atiyah-Guillemin-Sternberg in our particular case and we use it to give an easy-to-check sufficient condition for a $…
The author's work with Murnaghan on distinguished tame supercuspidal representations is re-examined using a simplified treatment of Jiu-Kang Yu's construction of tame supercuspidal representations of $p$-adic reductive groups. This leads to a unification of aspects of the theories of distinguished cuspidal representations over $p$-adic and finite fields.
We define and study a correspondence between the set of distinguished G^0-conjugacy classes in a fixed connected component of a reductive group G (with G^0 almost simple) and the set of (twisted) elliptic conjugacy classes in the Weyl group. We also prove a homogeneity property related to this correspondence.
Based on recent work of Kaletha, we apply Hakim--Murnaghan's result to study distinguished regular supercuspidal representations of tamely ramified reductive $p$-adic groups. Assuming $p$ is sufficiently large, we obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for regular supercuspidal representations to be distinguished. We also investigate the relation between the distinction problem and the Langlands functoriality, and confirm a conjecture of Lapid for regular depth-zero or epipelagic supercuspidal representations.
We further develop and simplify the general theory of distinguished tame supercuspidal representations of reductive $p$-adic groups due to Hakim and Murnaghan, as well as the analogous theory for finite reductive groups due to Lusztig. We apply our results to study the representations of ${\rm GL}_n(F)$, with $n$ odd and $F$ a nonarchimedean local field, that are distinguished with respect to an orthogonal group in $n$ variables. In particular, we determine precisely when a supercuspidal representation is distinguished with respect to an orthogonal group and, if so, that the space of distingui…
For two distinguished prime $\ell$ and $p$, we prove a $\ell$-adic version of the Poisson formula for reductive $p$-adic groups. In order to do this we write an identity for the trace of regular representation and orbital integrals. Next we reduce them to orbital integrals for endoscopy groups and look at this as the special value of $L$-function at $s=0$. And finally show that it is equal to the special value of motivic $L$-function at $s=0$.
Let $\frak g$ be a semisimple Lie algebra and $\frak k\subset\frak g$ be a reductive subalgebra. We say that a $\frak g$-module $M$ is a bounded $(\frak g, \frak k)$-module if $M$ is a direct sum of simple finite-dimensional $\frak k$-modules and the multiplicities of all simple $\frak k$-modules in that direct sum are universally bounded. The goal of this article is to show that the "boundedness" property for a simple $(\frak g, \frak k)$-module $M$ is equivalent to a property of the associated variety of the annihilator of $M$ (this is the closure of a nilpotent coadjoint orbit inside $\frak…
Given a reductive group $G$ and a reductive subgroup $H$, both defined over a number field $F$, we introduce the notion of the $H$-distinguished automorphic spectrum of $G$ and analyze it for the pairs $(GL_{2n},Sp_n)$ and $(Sp_{2n},Sp_n\times Sp_n)$. In the first case we give a complete description using results of Jacquet--Rallis, Offen and Yamana. In the second case we give an upper bound, generalizing vanishing results of Ash--Ginzburg--Rallis and a lower bound, extending results of Ginzburg--Rallis--Soudry.
Let g be a complex reductive Lie algebra and U(g) the universal enveloping algebra of g. Associated to a faithful irreducible finite dimensional representation of g, a square matrix F with entries in U(g) naturally arises and if we consider the entries of F are elements in End(M) of a given U(g)-module M, the minimal polynomial of F is defined as the usual one for an associative algebra over the complex field. Suppose M is a generalized Verma module induced from a character of a parabolic subalgebra of g. In this paper a polynomial q(x) with the parameter of the character is constructed, which…
Let $G$ be a connected reductive algebraic group defined over an algebraically closed field $\mathbbm k$ of characteristic zero. We consider the commuting variety $\mathcal C(\mathfrak u)$ of the nilradical $\mathfrak u$ of the Lie algebra $\mathfrak b$ of a Borel subgroup $B$ of $G$. In case $B$ acts on $\mathfrak u$ with only a finite number of orbits, we verify that $\mathcal C(\mathfrak u)$ is equidimensional and that the irreducible components are in correspondence with the {\em distinguished} $B$-orbits in $\mathfrak u$. We observe that in general $\mathcal C(\mathfrak u)$ is not equidim…
Let $G$ be a real reductive group, and let $χ$ be a character of a reductive subgroup $H$ of $G$. We construct $χ$-invariant linear functionals on certain cohomologically induced representations of $G$, and show that these linear functionals do not vanish on the bottom layers. Applying this construction, we prove two archimedean non-vanishing assumptions, which are crucial in the study of special values of L-functions via modular symbols.
We introduce and study a transfer map between ideals of the universal enveloping algebras of two members of a reductive dual pair of Lie algebras. Its definition is motivated by the approach to the real Howe duality through the theory of Capelli identities. We prove that this map provides a lower bound on the annihilators of theta lifts of representations with a fixed annihilator ideal. We also show that in the algebraic stable range, transfer respects the class of quantizations of nilpotent orbit closures. As an application, we explicitly describe quantizations of small nilpotent orbits of ge…
Let $G$ be a reductive group over a local field $F$ of characteristic zero, Archimedean or not. Let $X$ be a $G$-space. In this paper we study the existence of generalized Whittaker quotients for the space of Schwartz functions on $X$, considered as a representation of $G$. We show that the set of nilpotent elements of the dual space to the Lie algebra such that the corresponding generalized Whittaker quotient does not vanish contains the nilpotent part of the image of the moment map, and lies in the closure of this image. This generalizes recent results of Prasad and Sakellaridis. Applying ou…
Let $E/F$ be a quadratic extension of fields, and $G$ a connected quasi-split reductive group over $F$. Let $G^{op}$ be the opposition group obtained by twisting $G$ by the duality involution considered by Prasad. Assume that the field $F$ is finite. Let $π$ be an irreducible generic representation of $G(E)$. When $π$ is a Shintani base change lift of some representation of $G^{op}(F)$, we give an explicit nonzero $G(F)$-invariant vector in terms of the Whittaker vector of $π$. This shows particularly that $π$ is $G(F)$-distinguished. When the field $F$ is $p$-adic, the paper also proves that …
This paper studies the behavior of Jiu-Kang Yu's tame supercuspidal representations relative to involutions of reductive p-adic groups. Symmetric space methods are used to illuminate various aspects of Yu's construction. Necessary conditions for a tame supercuspidal representation of G to be distinguished by (the fixed points of) an involution of G are expressed in terms of properties of the G-orbit of the associated G-datum. When these conditions are satisfied, the question of whether a tame supercuspidal representation is distinguished reduces to the question of whether certain cuspidal repr…
Let $F$ be either $\mathbb{R}$ or a finite extension of $\mathbb{Q}_p$, and let $G$ be a finite central extension of the group of $F$-points of a reductive group defined over $F$. Also let $π$ be a smooth representation of $G$ (Frechet of moderate growth if $F=\mathbb{R}$). For each nilpotent orbit $\mathcal{O}$ we consider a certain Whittaker quotient $π_{\mathcal{O}}$ of $π$. We define the Whittaker support WS$(π)$ to be the set of maximal $\mathcal{O}$ among those for which $π_{\mathcal{O}}\neq 0$. In this paper we prove that all $\mathcal{O}\in\mathrm{WS}(π)$ are quasi-admissible nilpotent…
For Brylinski-Deligne covering groups of an arbitrary split reductive group, we consider theta representations attached to certain exceptional genuine characters. The goal of the paper is to determine when a theta representation has exactly a one-dimensional space of Whittaker functionals, in which case it is called distinguished. For this purpose, we first give effective lower and upper bounds for the dimension of Whittaker functionals for general theta representations. As a consequence, the dimension in many cases can be reduced to simple combinatorial computations, e.g., the Kazhdan-Patters…
Let $G$ be a quasi-split tamely ramified connected reductive group defined over a $p$-adic field $F$. We show that if $-1$ is in the $F$-points of the absolute Weyl group of $G$, then self-dual supercuspidal representations of $G(F)$ exist. Now assume further that $G$ is unramified and that the center of $G$ is connected. Let $π$ be a generic self-dual depth-zero regular supercuspidal representation of $G(F)$. We show that the Frobenius-Schur indicator of $π$ is given by the sign by which a certain distinguished element of the center of $G(F)$ of order two acts on $π$.
Let G be a connected and reductive algebraic group over an algebraically closed field of characteristic p > 0. An interesting class of representations of G consists of those G-modules having a good filtration -- i.e. a filtration whose layers are the standard highest weight modules obtained as the space of global sections of G-linearized line bundles on the flag variety of G. Let H be a connected and reductive subgroup of G. One says that (G,H) is a Donkin pair, or that H is a good filtration subgroup of G, if every G-module with good filtration also has a good filtration as an H-module. In th…
We exhibit a basis for the space of spherical characters of a distinguished supercuspidal representation $π$ of a connected reductive $p$-adic group, subject to the assumption that $π$ is obtained via induction from a representation of an open compact mod centre subgroup. We derive an integral formula for each spherical character belonging to the basis. This formula involves integration of a particular kind of matrix coefficient of $π$. We also obtain a similar formula for the function realizing the spherical character. In addition, we determine, subject to some conditions, which of these sphe…
We construct an L^2-model of "very small" irreducible unitary representations of simple Lie groups G which, up to finite covering, occur as conformal groups Co(V) of simple Jordan algebras V. If $V$ is split and G is not of type A_n, then the representations are minimal in the sense that the annihilators are the Joseph ideals. Our construction allows the case where G does not admit minimal representations. In particular, applying to Jordan algebras of split rank one we obtain the entire complementary series representations of SO(n,1)_0. A distinguished feature of these representations in all c…
In this paper we classify and give Kazhdan-Lusztig type character formulas for equivariantly irreducible representations of Lie algebras of reductive algebraic groups over a field of large positive characteristic. The equivariance is with respect to a group whose connected component is a torus. Character computation is done in two steps. First, we treat the case of distinguished $p$-characters: those that are not contained in a proper Levi. Here we essentially show that the category of equivariant modules we consider is a cell quotient of an affine parabolic category $\mathcal{O}$. For this, w…
The description of irreducible representations of a group G can be seen as a question in harmonic analysis; namely, decomposing a suitable space of functions on G into irreducibles for the action of G x G by left and right multiplication. For a split p-adic reductive group G over a local non-archimedean field, unramified irreducible smooth representations are in bijection with semisimple conjugacy classes in the ``Langlands dual'' group. We generalize this description to an arbitrary spherical variety X of G as follows: Irreducible unramified quotients of the space $C_c^\infty(X)$ are in natur…
