For a reductive group $G$ over a non-Archimedean local field (e.g $GL_n( \mathbb{Q}_p )$ ), Jacquet's Whittaker function is essentially proportional to a character of an irreducible representation of the Langlands dual group $G^\vee( \mathbb{C} )$ ( a Schur function if $G = GL_n( \mathbb{Q}_p )$). We propose a probabilistic approach to this claim, known as the Shintani-Casselman-Shalika formula, when the group $G$ has at least one minuscule cocharacter in the coweight lattice.
Our presentation goes along the following lines. Thanks to a minuscule random walk $W^{(z)}$ on the coweight lattice and a related random walk on the Borel subgroup, we establish a Poisson kernel formula for the non-Archimedean Whittaker function. The expression and its ingredients are similar to the one previously obtained by the author in the Archimedean case. A simple manipulation reduces the problem to evaluating the probability of $W^{(z)}$ never exiting the Weyl chamber. Then, an implementation of the reflection principle forces the appearance of the Weyl character formula and therefore retrieves characters of $G^\vee\left( \mathbb{C} \right)$.
The construction of the random walk on the Borel subgroup requires some care. It is extracted from a spherical random walk whose increments have a distribution that can be understood as elements from the spherical Hecke algebra.
We prove the Casselman-Shalika formula for unramified groups over a non-archimedean local field by studying the action of the spherical Hecke algebra on the space of compact spherical Whittaker functions via the twisted Satake transform. This method provides a conceptual explanation of the appearance of characters of a dual group in the Casselman-Shalika formula.
The Casselman-Shalika method is a way to compute explicit formulas for periods of irreducible unramified representations of p-adic groups that are associated to unique models (i.e. multiplicity-free induced representations). We apply this method to the case of the Shalika model of GL_n, which is known to distinguish lifts from odd orthogonal groups. In the course of our proof, we further develop a variant of the method, that was introduced by Y.Hironaka, and in effect reduce many such problems to straightforward calculations on the group.
This paper studies spherical Whittaker functions for central extensions of reductive groups over local fields. We follow the development of Chinta and Offen to produce a metaplectic Casselman-Shalika formula for tame covers of all unramified groups.
For an arbitrary split adjoint group we identify the unramified Whittaker space with the space of skew-invariant functions on the lattice of coweights and deduce from it the Casselman-Shalika formula.
In the recent works of Brubaker-Bump-Friedberg, Bump-Nakasuji, and others, the product in the Casselman-Shalika formula is written as a sum over a crystal. The coefficient of each crystal element is defined using the data coming from the whole crystal graph structure. In this paper, we adopt the tableaux model for the crystal and obtain the same coefficients using data from each individual tableaux; i.e., we do not need to look at the graph structure. We also show how to combine our results with tensor products of crystals to obtain the sum of coefficients for a given weight. The sum is a q-po…
In this paper we establish a Steinberg-Lusztig tensor product theorem for abstract Fock space. This is a generalization of the type A result of Leclerc-Thibon and a Grothendieck group version of the Steinberg-Lusztig tensor product theorem for representations of quantum groups at roots of unity. Although the statement can be phrased in terms of parabolic affine Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials and thus has geometric content, our proof is combinatorial, using the theory of crystals (Littelmann paths). We derive the Casselman-Shalika formula as a consequence of the Steinberg-Lusztig tensor product th…
We define unramified Whittaker functions on the p-adic points of an affine Kac-Moody group, and establish an analogue of the Casselman-Shalika formula for these functions.
We propose new explicit form of q-deformed Whittaker functions solving q-deformed gl(l+1)-Toda chains. In the limit q->1 constructed solutions reduce to classical class one gl(l+1)-Whittaker functions in the form proposed by Givental. An important property of the proposed expression for the q-deformed gl(l+1)-Whittaker function is that it can be represented as a character of C*x GL(l+1). This provides a q-version of the Shintani-Casselman-Shalika formula for p-adic Whittaker function. The Shintani-Casselman-Shalika formula is recovered in the limit q->0 when the q-deformed Whittaker function i…
We relate Iwahori-Whittaker functions on metaplectic covers to certain Demazure-Lusztig operators, the latter of which are built from a Weyl group action previously considered by G. Chinta and P. Gunnells. Using a certain combinatorial identity for the sum of these Demazure-Lusztig operators, we obtain an analogue of the Casselman-Shalika formula for spherical Whittaker functions in this context.
In this paper, we consider how to express an Iwahori--Whittaker function through Demazure characters. Under some interesting combinatorial conditions, we obtain an explicit formula and thereby a generalization of the Casselman--Shalika formula. Under the same conditions, we compute the transition matrix between two natural bases for the space of Iwahori fixed vectors of an induced representation of a p-adic group; this generalizes a result of Bump--Nakasuji.
Starting from some linear algebraic data (a Weyl-group invariant bilinear form) and some arithmetic data (a bilinear Steinberg symbol), we construct a cover of a Kac-Moody group generalizing the work of Matsumoto. Specializing our construction over non-archimedean local fields, for each positive integer n we obtain the notion of $n$-fold metaplectic covers of Kac-Moody groups. In this setting, we prove a Casselman-Shalika type formula for Whittaker functions.
We obtain explicit formulas for the product of a deformed Weyl denominator with the character of an irreducible representation of the spin group $\rm{Spin}_{2r+1}({\mathbb C})$, which is an analogue of the formulas of Tokuyama for Schur polynomials and Hamel-King for characters of symplectic groups. To give these, we start with a symplectic group and obtain such characters using the Casselman-Shalika formula. We then analyze this using objects which are naturally attached to the metaplectic double cover of an odd orthogonal group, which also has dual group $\rm{Spin}_{2r+1}({\mathbb C})$.
We relate the analytic conductor of a generic irreducible representation of $\mathrm{GL}_n(\mathbb{R})$ to the invariance properties of vectors in that representation. The relationship is an analytic archimedean analogue of some aspects of the classical non-archimedean newvector theory of Casselman and Jacquet--Piatetski-Shapiro--Shalika. We illustrate how this relationship may be applied in trace formulas to majorize sums over automorphic forms on $\mathrm{PGL}_n(\mathbb{Z}) \backslash \mathrm{PGL}_n(\mathbb{R})$ ordered by analytic conductor.
In this paper, we obtain affine analogues of Gindikin-Karpelevich formula and Casselman-Shalika formula as sums over Kashiwara-Lusztig's canonical bases. Suggested by these formulas, we define natural $q$-deformation of arithmetical functions such as (multi-)partition function and Ramanujan $τ$-function, and prove various identities among them. In some examples, we recover classical identities by taking limits. We also consider $q$-deformation of Kostant's function and study certain $q$-polynomials whose special values are weight multiplicities.
Spherical Whittaker functions on the metaplectic n-fold cover of GL(r+1) over a nonarchimedean local field containing n distinct n-th roots of unity may be expressed as the partition functions of statistical mechanical systems that are variants of the six-vertex model. If n=1 then in view of the Casselman-Shalika formula this fact is related to Tokuyama's deformation of the Weyl character formula. It is shown that various properties of these Whittaker functions may be expressed in terms of the commutativity of row transfer matrices for the system. Potentially these properties (which are alread…
Let $F$ be a non-Archimedean local field whose residue characteristic is odd. In this paper we develop a theory of newforms for $U(1,1)(F)$, building on previous work on $SL_2(F)$. This theory is analogous to the results of Casselman for $GL_2(F)$ and Jacquet, Piatetski-Shapiro, and Shalika for $GL_n(F)$. To a representation $π$ of $U(1,1)(F)$, we attach an integer $c(π)$ called the conductor of $π$, which depends only on the $L$-packet $Π$ containing $π$. A newform is a vector in $π$ which is essentially fixed by a congruence subgroup of level $c(π)$. We show that our newforms are always test…
We consider Baxter Q-operators for various versions of quantum affine Toda chain. The interpretation of eigenvalues of the finite Toda chain Baxter operators as local Archimedean L-functions proposed recently is generalized to the case of affine Lie algebras. We also introduce a simple generalization of Baxter operators and local L-functions compatible with this identification. This gives a connection of the Toda chain Baxter Q-operators with an Archimedean version of the Polya-Hilbert operator proposed by Berry-Kitting. We also elucidate the Dorey-Tateo spectral interpretation of eigenvalues …
Let X=H\G be a homogeneous spherical variety for a split reductive group G over the integers o of a p-adic field k, and K=G(o) a hyperspecial maximal compact subgroup of G=G(k). We compute eigenfunctions ("spherical functions") on X=X(k) under the action of the unramified (or spherical) Hecke algebra of G, generalizing many classical results of "Casselman-Shalika" type. Under some additional assumptions on X we also prove a variant of the formula which involves a certain quotient of L-values, and we present several applications such as: (1) a statement on "good test vectors" in the multiplicit…
We describe the structure of the Whittaker or Gelfand-Graev module on a $n$-fold metaplectic cover of a $p$-adic group $G$ at both the Iwahori and spherical level. We express our answer in terms of the representation theory of a quantum group at a root of unity attached to the Langlands dual group of $G$. To do so, we introduce an algebro-combinatorial model for these modules and develop for them a Kazhdan-Lusztig theory involving new generic parameters. These parameters can either be specialized to Gauss sums to recover the $p$-adic theory or to the natural grading parameter in the representa…
We prove a `motivic' analogue of the Weyl character formula, computing the Euler characteristic of a line bundle on a generalized flag manifold $G/B$ multiplied either by a motivic Chern class of a Schubert cell, or a Segre analogue of it. The result, given in terms of Demazure-Lusztig (D-L) operators, recovers formulas found by Brubaker, Bump and Licata for the Iwahori-Whittaker functions of the principal series representation of a $p$-adic group. In particular, we obtain a new proof of the classical Casselman-Shalika formula for the spherical Whittaker function. The proofs are based on local…
We introduce the (global) q-Whittaker function as the limit at t=0 of the q,t-spherical function extending the symmetric Macdonald polynomials to arbitrary eigenvalues. The construction heavily depends on the technique of the q-Gaussians developed by the author (and Stokman in the non-reduced case). In this approach, the q-Whittaker function is given by a series convergent everywhere, a kind of generating function for multi-dimensional q-Hermite polynomials (closely related to the level 1 Demazure characters). One of the applications is a q-version of the Shintani- Casselman- Shalika formula, …
