We define the concept of a regular object with respect to another object in an arbitrary category. We present basic properties of regular objects and we study this concept in the special cases of abelian categories and locally finitely generated Grothendieck categories. Applications are given for categories of comodules over a coalgebra and for categories of graded modules, and a link to the theory of generalized inverses of matrices is presented. Some of the techniques we use are new, since dealing with arbitrary categories allows us to pass to the dual category.
We continue our study of relatively divisible and relatively flat objects in exact categories in the sense of Quillen with several applications to exact structures on finitely accessible additive categories and module categories. We derive consequences for exact structures generated by the simple modules and the modules with zero Jacobson radical.
We show how the theory of (dual) strongly relative Rickart objects may be employed in order to study strongly relative regular objects and (dual) strongly relative Baer objects in abelian categories. For each of them, we prove general properties, we analyze the behaviour with respect to (co)products, and we study the transfer via functors. We also give applications to Grothendieck categories, (graded) module categories and comodule categories.
We introduce and study relatively divisible and relatively flat objects in exact categories in the sense of Quillen. For every relative cotorsion pair $(\mathcal{A},\mathcal{B})$ in an exact category $\mathcal{C}$, $\mathcal{A}$ coincides with the class of relatively flat objects of $\mathcal{C}$ for some relative projectively generated exact structure, while $\mathcal{B}$ coincides with the class of relatively divisible objects of $\mathcal{C}$ for some relative injectively generated exact structure. We exhibit Galois connections between relative cotorsion pairs, relative projectively generat…
The Noether isomorphism theorems and the Zassenhaus Lemma from group theory have a non-pointed version in a suitable categorical context first considered by W. Tholen in his PhD thesis. This article leads to a unification of these results with the ones in the pointed categorical context considered by O. Wyler, by working in the framework of star-regular categories introduced by M. Gran, Z. Janelidze and A. Ursini. Some concrete examples of categories where these results hold are examined in detail.
We introduce and study (dual) strongly relative Rickart objects in abelian categories. We prove general properties, we analyze the behaviour with respect to (co)products, and we study the transfer via functors. We also give applications to Grothendieck categories, (graded) module categories and comodule categories. Our theory of (dual) strongly relative Rickart objects may be employed in order to study strongly relative regular objects and (dual) strongly relative Baer objects in abelian categories.
We introduce and investigate (dual) relative split objects with respect to a fully invariant short exact sequence in abelian categories. We compare them with (dual) relative Rickart objects, and we study their behaviour with respect to direct sums and classes all of whose objects are (dual) relative split. We also introduce and study (dual) strongly relative split objects. Applications are given to Grothendieck categories, module and comodule categories.
We investigate relative CS-Baer objects in abelian categories in relationship with other relevant classes of objects such as relative Baer objects, extending objects, objects having certain summand intersection properties and relative CS-Rickart objects. Dual results are automatically obtained by applying the duality principle in abelian categories. We also study direct sums of relative CS-Baer objects, and we determine the complete structure of dual self-CS-Baer modules over Dedekind domains. Further applications are given to module categories.
We introduce (dual) relative CS-Rickart objects in abelian categories, as common generalizations of (dual) relative Rickart objects and extending (lifting) objects. We study direct summands and (co)products of (dual) relative CS-Rickart objects as well as classes all of whose objects are (dual) self-CS-Rickart. Applications are given to Grothendieck categories and, in particular, to module and comodule categories.
$2$-star-permutable categories were introduced in a joint work with Z. Janelidze and A. Ursini as a common generalisation of regular Mal'tsev categories and of normal subtractive categories. In the present article we first characterise these categories in terms of what we call star-regular pushouts. We then show that the $3 \times 3$ Lemma characterising normal subtractive categories and the Cuboid Lemma characterising regular Mal'tsev categories are special instances of a more general homological lemma for star-exact sequences. We prove that $2$-star-permutability is equivalent to the validit…
We introduce the notion of star-symmetry for relations in a multi-pointed category and use it to obtain a characterization of the projective covers of 2-star-permutable categories. This generalizes the results of Rosický-Vitale for regular Mal'tsev categories, as well as those of Gran-Rodelo for regular subtractive categories. We apply the characterization in terms of star-symmetry to recover the syntactic conditions defining E-subtractive varieties in the sense of Ursini.
This paper provides a short introduction to the notion of regular category and its use in categorical algebra. We first prove some of its basic properties, and consider some fundamental algebraic examples. We then analyse the algebraic properties of the categories satisfying the additional Mal'tsev axiom, and then the weaker Goursat axiom. These latter contexts can be seen as the categorical counterparts of the properties of $2$-permutability and of $3$-permutability of congruences in universal algebra. Mal'tsev and Goursat categories have been intensively studied in the last years: we present…
We propose definitions of regular and exact (virtual) double categories, proving a number of results which parallel many basic results in the theory of regular and exact categories. We show that any regular virtual double category admits a factorization system which generalizes the factorization of a functor between categories into a bijective-on-objects functor followed by a fully-faithful functor. Finally, we show that our definition of exact double category is equivalent to an axiom proposed by Wood, and very closely related to the "tight Kleisli objects" studied by Garner and Shulman.
In this paper, we obtain a non-abelian analogue of Lubkin's embedding theorem for abelian categories. Our theorem faithfully embeds any small regular Mal'tsev category $\mathbb{C}$ in an $n$-th power of a particular locally finitely presentable regular Mal'tsev category. The embedding preserves and reflects finite limits, isomorphisms and regular epimorphisms, as in the case of Barr's embedding theorem for regular categories. Furthermore, we show that we can take $n$ to be the (cardinal) number of subobjects of the terminal object in $\mathbb{C}$.
We introduce relative homological and weakly homological categories, where ``relative'' refers to a distinguished class of normal epimorphisms. It is a generalization of homological categories, but also protomodular categories can be regarded as examples. We indicate that the relative versions of various homological lemmas can be proved in a relative homological category.
Basing ourselves on the concept of double central extension from categorical Galois theory, we study a notion of commutator which is defined relative to a Birkhoff subcategory B of a semi-abelian category A. This commutator characterises Janelidze and Kelly's B-central extensions; when the subcategory B is determined by the abelian objects in A, it coincides with Huq's commutator; and when the category A is a variety of omega-groups, it coincides with the relative commutator introduced by the first author.
Regular logic is the fragment of first order logic generated by $=$, $\top$, $\wedge$, and $\exists$. A key feature of this logic is that it is the minimal fragment required to express composition of binary relations; another is that it is the internal logic of regular categories. The link between these two facts is that in any regular category, one may construct a notion of binary relation using jointly-monic spans; this results in what is known as the bicategory of relations of the regular category. In this paper we provide a direct axiomatization of bicategories of relations, which we term …
We introduce (dual) strongly relative CS-Rickart objects in abelian categories, as common generalizations of (dual) strongly relative Rickart objects and strongly extending (lifting) objects. We give general properties, and we study direct summands, (co)products of (dual) strongly relative CS-Rickart objects and classes all of whose objects are (dual) strongly self-CS-Rickart.
We construct an exact completion for regular categories enriched in the cartesian closed category $\mathsf{Pos}$ of partially ordered sets and monotone functions by employing a suitable calculus of relations. We then characterize the embedding of any regular category into its completion and use this to obtain examples of concrete categories which arise as such completions. In particular, we prove that the exact completion in this enriched sense of both the categories of Stone and Priestley spaces is the category of compact ordered spaces of L. Nachbin. Finally, we consider the relationship bet…
Relative realizability toposes satisfy a universal property that involves regular functors to other categories. We use this universal property to define what relative realizability categories are, when based on other categories than of the topos of sets. This paper explains the property and gives a construction for relative realizability categories that works for arbitrary base Heyting categories. The universal property shows us some new geometric morphisms to relative realizability toposes too.
We describe a Quillen equivalence between quasi-categories and relative categories which is surprisingly similar to Thomason's Quillen equivalences between simplicial sets and categories.
We examine the analogues for the respective categories of locales of two well-known results about regularity and effectiveness of some categories of spaces. We show that the category of compact regular locales is effective regular (=Barr-exact). We also show that the category of compactly generated Hausdorff locales is regular, provided that it is coreflective within Hausdorff locales. We do not appeal to the existence of points (which would render the two results trivial) but rely on the treatment of the subject by methods that are valid in the internal logic of a topos. On the course to the …
Normal monomorphisms in the sense of Bourn describe the equivalence classes of an internal equivalence relation. Although the definition is given in the fairly general setting of a category with finite limits, later investigations on this subject often focus on protomodular settings, where normality becomes a property. This paper clarifies the connections between internal equivalence relations and Bourn-normal monomorphisms in regular Mal'tesv categories with pushouts of split monomorphisms along arbitrary morphisms, whereas a full description is achieved for quasi-pointed regular Mal'tsev cat…
A relative category is a category with a chosen class of weak equivalences. Barwick and Kan produced a model structure on the category of all relative categories, which is Quillen equivalent to the Joyal model structure on simplicial sets and the Rezk model structure on simplicial spaces. We will prove that the underlying relative category of a model category or even a fibration category is fibrant in the Barwick--Kan model structure.
This is the first part of a series of three strongly related papers in which three equivalent structures are studied: - internal categories in categories of monoids; defined in terms of pullbacks relative to a chosen class of spans - crossed modules of monoids relative to this class of spans - simplicial monoids of so-called Moore length 1 relative to this class of spans. The most important examples of monoids that are covered are small categories (treated as monoids in categories of spans) and bimonoids in symmetric monoidal categories (regarded as monoids in categories of comonoids). In this…
We characterise regular Goursat categories through a specific stability property of regular epimorphisms with respect to pullbacks. Under the assumption of the existence of some pushouts this property can be also expressed as a restricted Beck-Chevalley condition, with respect to the fibration of points, for a special class of commutative squares. In the case of varieties of universal algebras these results give, in particular, a structural explanation of the existence of the ternary operations characterising $3$-permutable varieties of universal algebras.
We study properties of relative modular categories and derive sufficient conditions for their existence. In particular, we derive sufficient conditions for relative pre-modular categories to be non-degenerate and relative modular, and for the quotient of categories taking a particular form by their ideal of negligible modules to be generically semi-simple.
We introduce, for every positive integer n, the notion of an n-relative category and show that the category of the small n-relative categories is a model for the homotopy theory of n-fold homotopy theories, i.e. homotopy theories of ... of homotopy theories.
We study the relationship between singularity categories and relative singularity categories and discuss constructions of differential graded algebras of relative singularity categories. As consequences, we obtain structural results, which are known or generalise known results, on singularity categories of algebras with radical square zero, of non-commutative deformations of Kleinian singularities, of $SL_3(\mathbb{C})$-quotient singularities and of Gorenstein toric threefolds.
In a regular category $\mathbb E$, the direct image along a regular epimorphism $f$ of a preorder is not a preorder in general. In $Set$, its best preorder approximation is then its cocartesian image above $f$. In a regular category, the existence of such a cocartesian image above $f$ of a preorder $S$ is actually equivalent to the existence of the supremum $R[f]\vee S$ among the preorders. We investigate here some conditions ensuring the existence of these cocartesian images or equivalently of these suprema. They applied to two very dissimilar contexts: any topos $\mathbb E$ with suprema of c…
We lift Charles Rezk's complete Segal space model structure on the category of simplicial spaces to a Quillen equivalent one on the category of relative categories.
We introduce a delooping model of relative exact categories. It gives us a condition that the negative K-group of a relative exact category becomes trivial.
Auslander and Kleiner proved in 1994 an abstract version of Green correspondence for pairs of adjoint functors between three categories. They produce additive quotients of certain subcategories giving the classical Green correspondence in the special setting of modular representation theory. Carlson, Peng and Wheeler showed in 1998 that Green correspondence in the classical setting of modular representation theory is actually an equivalence between triangulated categories with respect to a non standard triangulated structure. In the present note we first define and study a version of relative …
We consider the ordinary category Span(C) of (isomorphism classes of) spans of morphisms in a category C with finite limits as needed, composed horizontally via pullback, and give a general criterion for a quotient of Span(C) to be an allegory. In particular, when C carries a pullback-stable, but not necessarily proper, (E, M)-factorization system, we establish a quotient category Span_E(C) that is isomorphic to the category Rel_M(C) of M-relations in C, and show that it is a (unitary and tabular) allegory precisely when M is a class of monomorphisms in C. Without this restriction, one can sti…
We study the transfer of (dual) relative CS-Rickart properties via functors between abelian categories. We consider fully faithful functors as well as adjoint pairs of functors. We give several applications to Grothendieck categories and, in particular, to (graded) module and comodule categories.
We study the transfer of (dual) relative Rickart properties via functors between abelian categories, and we deduce the transfer of (dual) relative Baer property. We also give applications to Grothendieck categories, comodule categories and (graded) module categories, with emphasis on endomorphism rings.
This is the second part of a series of three strongly related papers in which three equivalent structures are studied: - internal categories in categories of monoids; defined in terms of pullbacks relative to a chosen class of spans - crossed modules of monoids relative to this class of spans - simplicial monoids of so-called Moore length 1 relative to this class of spans. The most important examples of monoids that are covered are small categories (treated as monoids in categories of spans) and bimonoids in symmetric monoidal categories (regarded as monoids in categories of comonoids). We study singularity categories through Gorenstein objects in triangulated categories and silting theory. Let $ω$ be a semi-selforthogonal (or presilting) subcategory of a triangulated category $\mathcal{T}$. We introduce the notion of $ω$-Gorenstein objects, which is far extended version of Gorenstein projective modules and Gorenstein injective modules in triangulated categories. We prove that the stable category $\underline{\mathcal{G}_ω}$, where $\mathcal{G}_ω$ is the subcategory of all $ω$-Gorenstein objects, is a triangulated category and it is, under some conditions, triangle equivalent …
We give a formula for the relative Deligne tensor product of two indecomposable finite semisimple module categories over a pointed braided fusion category over an algebraically closed field.
In this paper, we study a close relationship between relative cluster tilting theory in extriangulated categories and tau-tilting theory in module categories. Our main results show that relative rigid objects are in bijection with $τ$-rigid pairs, and also relative maximal rigid objects with support tau-tilting pairs under some assumptions. These results generalize their work by Adachi-Iyama-Reiten, Yang-Zhu and Fu-Geng-Liu. Finally, we introduce mutation of relative maximal rigid objects and show that any basic relative almost maximal rigid object has exactly two non-isomorphic indecomposable…
We propose a general method to construct new triangulated categories, relative stable categories, as additive quotients of a given one. This construction enhances results of Beligiannis, particularly in the tensor-triangular setting. We prove a birationality result showing that the original category and its relative stable quotient are equivalent on some open piece of their spectrum.
Relative theories(=closed subfunctors) are considered in exact, triangulated and extriangulated categories by Dräxler-Reiten-Smalø-Solberg-Keller, Beligiannis and Herschend-Liu-Nakaoka, respectively. We give a construction method of closed subfunctors from given half exact functors which contains existing constructions. Moreover, if an extriangulated category has enough projective objects, then every closed subfunctor is obtained by this construction.
We prove that a regular category $\mathcal C$ is a Mal'tsev category if and only if a strong form of the denormalised $3 \times 3$ Lemma holds true in $\mathcal C$. In this version of the $3 \times 3$ Lemma, the vertical exact forks are replaced by pullbacks of regular epimorphisms along arbitrary morphisms. The shape of the diagram it determines suggests to call it the Cuboid Lemma. This new characterisation of regular categories that are Mal'tsev categories (= $2$-permutable) is similar to the one previously obtained for Goursat categories (= $3$-permutable). We also analyse the "relative" v…
In a previous paper we lifted Charles Rezk's complete Segal model structure on the category of simplicial spaces to a Quillen equivalent one on the category of "relative categories," and our aim in this successor paper is to obtain a more explicit description of the weak equivalences in this model structure by showing that these weak equivalences are exactly the DK-equivalences, i.e. those maps between relative categories which induce a weak equivalence between their simplicial localizations.
We study the *homotopy theory* of $\infty$-categories enriched in the $\infty$-category $sS$ of simplicial spaces. That is, we consider $sS$-enriched $\infty$-categories as presentations of ordinary $\infty$-categories by means of a "local" geometric realization functor $Cat_{sS} \to Cat_\infty$, and we prove that their homotopy theory presents the $\infty$-category of $\infty$-categories, i.e. that this functor induces an equivalence $Cat_{sS} [[ W_{DK}^{-1} ]] \xrightarrow{\sim} Cat_\infty$ from a localization of the $\infty$-category of $sS$-enriched $\infty$-categories. Following Dwyer--Ka…
We propose a new approach to S-protomodular categories in the sense of D. Bourn, N. Martins-Ferreira, A. Montoli, and M. Sobral. Instead of points (=split epimorphisms) it uses generalized points, which we define as composable pairs of morphisms whose composites are pullback stable regular epimorphisms. This approach is convenient in describing the connection between split and regular Schreier epimorphisms of monoids.
The main objective of this paper is to propose a definition of non-connective K-theory for a wide class of relative exact categories which, in general, do not satisfy the factorization axiom and confirm that it agrees with the non-connective K-theory for exact categories and complicial exact categories with weak equivalences. The main application is to study the topological filtrations of non-connective K-theory of a noetherian commutative ring with unit in terms of Koszul cubes.
In universal algebra, it is well known that varieties admitting a majority term admit several Mal'tsev-type characterizations. The main aim of this paper is to establish categorical counterparts of some of these characterizations for regular categories. We prove a categorical version of Bergman's Double-projection Theorem: a regular category is a majority category if and only if every subobject $S$ of a finite product $A_1 \times A_2 \times \cdots \times A_n$ is uniquely determined by its two-fold projections. We also establish a categorical counterpart of the Pairwise Chinese Remainder Theore…
We consider a notion of exact sequences in any -not necessarily exact- pointed category relative to a given (E;M)-factorization structure. We apply this notion to introduce and investigate a new notion of exact sequences of semimodules over semirings relative to the canonical image factorization. Several homological results are proved using the new notion of exactness including some restricted versions of the Short Five Lemma and the Snake Lemma opening the door for introducing and investigating homology objects in such categories. Our results apply in particular to the variety of commutative …
