Let $Q_n(x)=\sum_{i=0}^{n} A_{i}x^{i}$ be a random algebraic polynomial where the coefficients $A_0,A_1,... $ form a sequence of centered Gaussian random variables. Moreover, assume that the increments $Δ_j=A_j-A_{j-1}$, $j=0,1,2,...$ are independent, $A_{-1}=0$. The coefficients can be considered as $n$ consecutive observations of a Brownian motion. We study the asymptotic behaviour of the expected number of local maxima of $Q_n(x)$ below level $u=O(n^k)$, for some $k>0$.
In this paper, for centered homogeneous Gaussian random fields the joint limiting distributions of normalized maxima and minima over continuous time and uniform grids are investigated. It is shown that maxima and minima are asymptotic dependent for strongly dependent homogeneous Gaussian random field with the choice of sparse grid, Pickands' grid or dense grid, while for the weakly dependent Gaussian random field maxima and minima are asymptotically independent.
The explicit formulae for the height distribution and expected number of local maxima have been obtained for isotropic Gaussian random fields on certain low-dimensional Euclidean space or low-dimensional spheres.
In this paper, we study the asymptotic relation between the maximum of acontinuous order statistics process formed by stationary Gaussian processesand the maximum of this process sampled at discrete time points. It is shown that, these two maxima are asymptotically independent when the Gaussian processes are weakly dependent and the discrete points are sufficient sparse, while for other case, these two maxima are asymptotically dependent.
The principal results of this contribution are the weak and strong limits of maxima of contracted stationary Gaussian random sequences. Due to the random contraction we introduce a modified Berman condition which is sufficient for the weak convergence of the maxima of the scaled sample. Under a stronger assumption the weak convergence is strengthened to almost convergence.
In this paper, joint limit distributions of maxima and minima on independent and non-identically distributed bivariate Gaussian triangular arrays is derived as the correlation coefficient of $i$th vector of given $n$th row is the function of $i/n$. Furthermore, second-order expansions of joint distributions of maxima and minima are established if the correlation function satisfies some regular conditions.
In this paper, we study second order expansions of distributions of maxima of bivariate Gaussian triangular arrays under power normalization. Numerical analysis are given to compare the asymptotic behaviors under power normalization with the asymptotic behaviors under linear normalization derived by Hashorva et al. (2016).
We obtain a Bernstein type Gaussian concentration inequality for martingales. Our inequality improves the Azuma-Hoeffding inequality for moderate deviations $x$. Following the work of McDiarmid (1989), Talagrand (1996) and Boucheron, Lugosi and Massart (2000,2003), we show that our result can be applied to the concentration of random functions, Erdös-Rényi random graph, and maxima of empirical processes. Several interesting Gaussian concentration inequalities have been obtained.
This appendix provides a short proof for sample path continuity of the Brownian motion induced by an arbitrary centered Gaussian measure on a separable Banach space, and also some perturbation results for the spectrum of compact self-adjoint operators on a Hilbert space.
We provide conditions that ensure that the recentered maximum of the Gaussian free field on a sequence of graphs fluctuates at the same order as the field at the point of maximal variance. In particular, on a sequence of such graphs the recentered maximum is not tight, similarly to the situation in Z but in contrast with the situation in Z^2. We show that our conditions cover a large class of "fractal" graphs.
The assumption that the elements of the cost matrix in the classical assignment problem are drawn independently from a standard Gaussian distribution motivates the study of a particular Gaussian field indexed by the symmetric permutation group. The correlation structure of the field is determined by the Hamming distance between two permutations. The expectation of the maximum of the field is shown to go to infinity in the same way as if all variables of the field were independent. However, the variance of the maximum is shown to converge to zero at a rate which is slower than under independenc…
Let $\{X_{n}(t), t\in[0,\infty)\}, n\in\mathbb{N}$ be a sequence of centered dependent stationary Gaussian processes. The limit distribution of $\sup_{t\in[0,T(n)]}|X_{n}(t)|$ is established as $r_{n}(t)$, the correlation function of $X_{n}$ satisfies the local and long range strong dependence conditions, which extends the results obtained by Seleznjev (1991).
In this paper, joint asymptotics of powered maxima for a triangular array of bivariate powered Gaussian random vectors are considered. Under the Hüsler-Reiss condition, limiting distributions of powered maxima are derived. Furthermore, the second-order expansions of the joint distributions of powered maxima are established under the refined Hüsler-Reiss condition.
The paper deals with the expected maxima of continuous Gaussian processes $X = (X_t)_{t\ge 0}$ that are Hölder continuous in $L_2$-norm and/or satisfy the opposite inequality for the $L_2$-norms of their increments. Examples of such processes include the fractional Brownian motion and some of its "relatives" (of which several examples are given in the paper). We establish upper and lower bounds for $E \max_{0\le t\le 1}X_t$ and investigate the rate of convergence to that quantity of its discrete approximation $E \max_{0\le i\le n}X_{i/n}$. Some further properties of these two maxima are establ…
In this paper, we consider the distribution of the supremum of non-stationary Gaussian processes, and present a new theoretical result on the asymptotic behaviour of this distribution. Unlike previously known facts in this field, our main theorem yields the asymptotic representation of the corresponding distribution function with exponentially decaying remainder term. This result can be efficiently used for studying the projection density estimates, based, for instance, on Legendre polynomials. More precisely, we construct the sequence of accompanying laws, which approximates the distribution …
We consider in this paper the collection of near maxima of the discrete, two dimensional Gaussian free field in a box with Dirichlet boundary conditions. We provide a rough description of the geometry of the set of near maxima, estimates on the gap between the two largest maxima, and an estimate for the right tail up to a multiplicative constant on the law of the centered maximum.
We compute the expected signature of a class of Gaussian processes which is a subclass of the Gaussian processes with regular kernels, in the sense of Alos, Mazet and Nualart.
In this paper we show that the componentwise maxima ofweakly dependent bivariate stationary Gaussian triangular arrays converge in distribution after normalisation to Hüsler-Reiss distribution. Under a strong dependence assumption, we prove that the limit distribution of the maxima is a mixture of a bivariate Gaussian distribution and Hüsler-Reiss distribution. Another finding of our paper is that the componentwise maxima and componentwise minima remain asymptotically independent even in the settings of Hüsler and Reiss (1989) allowing further for weak dependence. Further we derive an almost s…
Let $\{f(t): t\in T\}$ be a smooth Gaussian random field over a parameter space $T$, where $T$ may be a subset of Euclidean space or, more generally, a Riemannian manifold. For any local maximum of $f(t)$ located at $t_0$ in the interior of $T$, we provide general formulae and asymptotic approximations for both the tail distribution of the height of a local maximum $\mathbb{P}\{f(t_0)>u | t_0 \text{is a local maximum of} f(t) \}$ and the overshoot distribution of a local maximum $\mathbb{P}\{f(t_0)>u+v | t_0 \text{is a local maximum of} f(t) \text{and} f(t_0)>v\}$. Assuming further that $f$ is…
Several classical results on boundary crossing probabilities of Brownian motion and random walks are extended to asymptotically Gaussian random fields, which include sums of i.i.d. random variables with multidimensional indices, multivariate empirical processes, and scan statistics in change-point and signal detection as special cases. Some key ingredients in these extensions are moderate deviation approximations to marginal tail probabilities and weak convergence of the conditional distributions of certain ``clumps'' around high-level crossings. We also discuss how these results are related t…
In this paper, we study the asymptotic distribution of the maxima of suprema of dependent Gaussian processes with trend. For different scales of the time horizon we obtain different normalizing functions for the convergence of the maxima. The obtained results not only have potential applications in estimating the delay of certain Gaussian fork-join queueing systems but also provide interesting insights to the extreme value theory for triangular arrays of random variables with row-wise dependence.
It is known that the normalized maxima of a sequence of independent and identically distributed bivariate normal random vectors with correlation coefficient $ρ\in (-1,1)$ is asymptotically independent, which may seriously underestimate extreme probabilities in practice. By letting $ρ$ depend on the sample size and go to one with certain rate, Hüsler and Reiss (1989) showed that the normalized maxima can become asymptotically dependent. In this paper, we extend such a study to a triangular array of multivariate Gaussian sequence, which further generalizes the results in Hsing, Hüsler and Reiss …
For the fractional Brownian motion $B^H$ with the Hurst parameter value $H$ in (0,1/2), we derive new upper and lower bounds for the difference between the expectations of the maximum of $B^H$ over [0,1] and the maximum of $B^H$ over the discrete set of values $ in^{-1},$ $i=1,\ldots, n.$ We use these results to improve our earlier upper bounds for the expectation of the maximum of $B^H$ over $[0,1]$ and derive new upper bounds for Pickands' constant.
For a continuous ${\cal L}_2$-bounded Martingale with no intervals of constancy, starting at $0$ and having final variance $σ^2$, the expected local time at $x \in \cal{R}$ is at most $\sqrt{σ^2+x^2}-|x|$. This sharp bound is attained by Standard Brownian Motion stopped at the first exit time from the interval $(x-\sqrt{σ^2+x^2},x+\sqrt{σ^2+x^2})$. Sharp bounds for the expected maximum, maximal absolute value, maximal diameter and maximal number of upcrossings of intervals, have been established by Dubins and Schwarz (1988), Dubins, Gilat and Meilijson (2009) and by the authors (2017).
Slepian and Sudakov-Fernique type inequalities, which compare expectations of maxima of Gaussian random vectors under certain restrictions on the covariance matrices, play an important role in probability theory, especially in empirical process and extreme value theories. Here we give explicit comparisons of expectations of smooth functions and distribution functions of maxima of Gaussian random vectors without any restriction on the covariance matrices. We also establish an anti-concentration inequality for the maximum of a Gaussian random vector, which derives a useful upper bound on the Lév…
Consider a game consisting of independent turns with even money payoffs in which the player wins with a fixed probability $p \geq 1/3$ and loses with probability $1 - p$. The Labouchere system is a betting strategy which entails keeping a list of positive real numbers and betting the sum of the first and the last number on the list at every turn. In case of a victory, those two numbers are erased from the list, and, in case of a loss, the bet amount is appended to the end of the list. The player finishes the game when the list becomes empty. It is known that, in a game played with the Labouche…
Recently in Gao and Stoev (2018) it was established that the concentration of maxima phenomenon is the key to solving the exact sparse support recovery problem in high dimensions. This phenomenon, known also as relative stability, has been little studied in the context of dependence. Here, we obtain bounds on the rate of concentration of maxima in Gaussian triangular arrays. These results are used to establish sufficient conditions for the uniform relative stability of functions of Gaussian arrays, leading to new models that exhibit phase transitions in the exact support recovery problem. Fina…
We obtain formulae for the expected number and height distribution of critical points of smooth isotropic Gaussian random fields parameterized on Euclidean space or spheres of arbitrary dimension. The results hold in general in the sense that there are no restrictions on the covariance function of the field except for smoothness and isotropy. The results are based on a characterization of the distribution of the Hessian of the Gaussian field by means of the family of Gaussian orthogonally invariant (GOI) matrices, of which the Gaussian orthogonal ensemble (GOE) is a special case. The obtained …
Let $\{(X(t), Y(s)): t\in T, s\in S\}$ be an $\mathbb{R}^2$-valued, centered, unit-variance smooth Gaussian vector field, where $T$ and $S$ are compact rectangles in $\mathbb{R}^N$. It is shown that, as $u\to \infty$, the joint excursion probability $\mathbb{P} \{\sup_{t\in T} X(t) \geq u, \sup_{s\in S} Y(s) \geq u \}$ can be approximated by $\mathbb{E}\{χ(A_u)\}$, the expected Euler characteristic of the excursion set $A_u=\{(t,s)\in T\times S: X(t) \ge u, Y(s) \ge u\}$, such that the error is super-exponentially small. This verifies the expected Euler characteristic heuristic (cf. Taylor, Ta…
We prove the four-dimensional Gaussian random vector maximum conjecture. This conjecture asserts that among all centered Gaussian random vectors $X=(X_1,X_2,X_3,X_4)$ with $E[X_i^2]=1$, $1\le i\le 4$, the expectation $E[\max(X_1,X_2,X_3,X_4)]$ is maximal if and only if all off-diagonal elements of the covariance matrix equal $-\frac{1}{3}$. As a direct consequence, we resolve the three-dimensional simplex mean width conjecture. This latter conjecture is a long-standing open problem in convex geometry, which asserts that among all simplices inscribed into the three-dimensional unit Euclidean ba…
Motivated by the papers of Piterbarg (2004) and Hüsler (2004), in this paper the asymptotic relation between the maximum of a continuous dependent homogeneous Gaussian random field and the maximum of this field sampled at discrete time points is studied. It is shown that, for the weakly dependent case, these two maxima are asymptotically independent, dependent and coincide when the grid of the discrete time points is a sparse grid, Pickands grid and dense grid, respectively, while for the strongly dependent case, these two maxima are asymptotically totally dependent if the grid of the discrete…
We confirm Flandrin's prediction for the expected average of local maxima of spectrograms of complex white noise with Gaussian windows (Gaussian spectrograms or, equivalently, modulus of weighted Gaussian Entire Functions), a consequence of the conjectured double honeycomb mean model for the network of zeros and local maxima, where the area of local maxima centered hexagons is three times larger than the area of zero centered hexagons. More precisely, we show that Gaussian spectrograms, normalized such that their expected density of zeros is 1, have an expected density of 5/3 critical points, …
We investigate the maximal size of distinguished submatrices of a Gaussian random matrix. Of interest are submatrices whose entries have average greater than or equal to a positive constant, and submatrices whose entries are well-fit by a two-way ANOVA model. We identify size thresholds and associated (asymptotic) probability bounds for both large-average and ANOVA-fit submatrices. Results are obtained when the matrix and submatrices of interest are square, and in rectangular cases when the matrix submatrices of interest have fixed aspect ratios. In addition, we obtain a strong, interval conce…
Although there is an extensive literature on the maxima of Gaussian processes, there are relatively few non-asymptotic bounds on their lower-tail probabilities. The aim of this paper is to develop such a bound, while also allowing for many types of dependence. Let $(ξ_1,\dots,ξ_N)$ be a centered Gaussian vector with standardized entries, whose correlation matrix $R$ satisfies $\max_{i\neq j} R_{ij}\leq ρ_0$ for some constant $ρ_0\in (0,1)$. Then, for any $ε_0\in(0,\sqrt{1-ρ_0})$, we establish an upper bound on the probability $\mathbb{P}(\max_{1\leq j\leq N} ξ_j\leq ε_0\sqrt{2\log(N)})$ in ter…
Let $X_{i,n},n\in \mathbb{N},1\leq i\leq n$, be a triangular array of independent $\mathbb{R}^d$-valued Gaussian random vectors with correlation matrices $Σ_{i,n}$. We give necessary conditions under which the row-wise maxima converge to some max-stable distribution which generalizes the class of Hüsler-Reiss distributions. In the bivariate case, the conditions will also be sufficient. Using these results, new models for bivariate extremes are derived explicitly. Moreover, we define a new class of stationary, max-stable processes as max-mixtures of Brown-Resnick processes. As an application, w…
We study the variance of the number of zeroes of a stationary Gaussian process on a long interval. We give a simple asymptotic description under mild mixing conditions. This allows us to characterise minimal and maximal growth. We show that a small (symmetrised) atom in the spectral measure at a special frequency does not affect the asymptotic growth of the variance, while an atom at any other frequency results in maximal growth. Our results allow us to analyse a large number of interesting examples.
This paper establishes an upper bound for the Kolmogorov distance between the maximum of a high-dimensional vector of smooth Wiener functionals and the maximum of a Gaussian random vector. As a special case, we show that the maximum of multiple Wiener-Itô integrals with common orders is well-approximated by its Gaussian analog in terms of the Kolmogorov distance if their covariance matrices are close to each other and the maximum of the fourth cumulants of the multiple Wiener-Itô integrals is close to zero. This may be viewed as a new kind of fourth moment phenomenon, which has attracted consi…
We are concerned with zeros of random power series with coefficients being a stationary, centered, complex Gaussian process. We show that the expected number of zeros in every smooth domain in the disk of convergence is less than that of the hyperbolic GAF with i.i.d. coefficients. When coefficients are finitely dependent, i.e., the spectral density is a trigonometric polynomial, we derive precise asymptotics of the expected number of zeros inside the disk of radius $r$ centered at the origin as $r$ tends to the radius of convergence, in the proof of which we clarify that the negative contribu…
The asymptotic law for the expected nodal volume of random non-Gaussian monochromatic band-limited functions is determined in vast generality. Our methods combine microlocal analytic techniques and modern probability theory. A particularly challenging obstacle needed to overcome is the possible concentration of nodal volume on a small proportion of the manifold, requiring solutions in both disciplines. As for the fine aspects of the distribution of nodal volume, such as its variance, it is expected that the non-Gaussian monochromatic functions behave qualitatively differently compared to their…
An old conjecture states that among all simplices inscribed in the unit sphere the regular one has the maximal mean width. An equivalent formulation is that for any centered Gaussian vector $(ξ_1,\dots,ξ_n)$ satisfying $\mathbb Eξ_1^2= \dots =\mathbb Eξ_n^2=1$ one has $$ \mathbb E\,\max\{ξ_1,\dots,ξ_n\}\leq\sqrt{\frac{n}{n-1}}\, \mathbb E\,\max\{η_1,\dots,η_n\}, $$ where $η_1,η_2,\dots,$ are independent standard Gaussian variables. Using this probabilistic interpretation we derive an asymptotic version of the conjecture. We also show that the mean width of the regular simplex with $2n$ vertice…
We derive a Gaussian approximation result for the maximum of a sum of high-dimensional random vectors. Specifically, we establish conditions under which the distribution of the maximum is approximated by that of the maximum of a sum of the Gaussian random vectors with the same covariance matrices as the original vectors. This result applies when the dimension of random vectors ($p$) is large compared to the sample size ($n$); in fact, $p$ can be much larger than $n$, without restricting correlations of the coordinates of these vectors. We also show that the distribution of the maximum of a sum…
We analyze the asymptotic behavior of the average maximal number of balls in a bin obtained by throwing uniformly at random $r$ balls without replacement into $n$ bins, $T$ times. Writing the expected maximum as $\frac{r}{n}T+ C_{n,r}\sqrt{T} + o(\sqrt{T})$, a recent preprint of Behrouzi-Far and Zeilberger asks for an explicit expression for $C_{n,r}$ in terms of $n,r$ and $π$. In this short note, we find an expression for $C_{n,r}$ in terms of $n, r$ and the expected maximum of $n$ independent standard Gaussians. This provides asymptotics for large $n$ as well as closed forms for small $n$---…
We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for hypercontractivity of the minima of nonnegative, i.i.d. random variables and of both the maxima of minima and the minima of maxima for such r.v.'s. It turns out that the idea of hypercontractivity for minima is closely related to small ball probabilities and Gaussian correlation inequalities.
We review recent progress relating to the extreme value statistics of the characteristic polynomials of random matrices associated with the classical compact groups, and of the Riemann zeta-function and other $L$-functions, in the context of the general theory of logarithmically-correlated Gaussian fields. In particular, we focus on developments related to the conjectures of Fyodorov \& Keating concerning the extreme value statistics, moments of moments, connections to Gaussian Multiplicative Chaos, and explicit formulae derived from the theory of symmetric functions.
Let $P_n$ be an $n$-dimensional regular polytope from one of the three infinite series (regular simplices, regular crosspolytopes, and cubes). Project $P_n$ onto a random, uniformly distributed linear subspace of dimension $d\geq 2$. We prove that the expected number of $k$-dimensional faces of the resulting random polytope is an increasing function of $n$. As a corollary, we show that the expected number of $k$-faces of the Gaussian polytope is an increasing function of the number of points used to generate the polytope. Similar results are obtained for the symmetric Gaussian polytope and the…
