In the program to classify C$^*$-algebras, it is very important to find abstract conditions which are sufficient to imply that a given algebra has tracial rank zero, in the sense of Huaxin Lin. Even in the presence of a unique trace, we show that the union of the known necessary conditions is not enough.
We define the tracial Rokhlin property for actions of finite cyclic groups on stably finite simple unital C*-algebras. We prove that when the algebra is in addition simple and has tracial rank zero, then the crossed product again has tracial rank zero. Under a kind of weak approximate innerness assumption and one other technical condition, we prove that if the action has the the tracial Rokhlin property and the crossed product has tracial rank zero, then the original algebra has tracial rank zero. We give examples showing how the tracial Rokhlin property differs from the Rokhlin property of Iz…
Given a topological graph $E$, we give a complete description of tracial states on the C*-algebra $\mathrm{C}^*(E)$ which are invariant under the gauge action; there is an affine homeomorphism between the space of gauge invariant tracial states on $\mathrm{C}^*(E)$ and Radon probability measures on the vertex space $E^0$ which are, in a suitable sense, invariant under the action of the edge space $E^1$. It is shown that if $E$ has no cycles, then every tracial state on $\mathrm{C}^*(E)$ is gauge invariant. When $E^0$ is totally disconnected, the gauge invariant tracial states on $\mathrm{C}^*(…
Let $G$ be an inductive limit of finite cyclic groups and let $A$ be a unital simple projectionless C*-algebra with $K_1(A) \cong G$ and with a unique tracial state, as constructed based on dimension drop algebras by Jiang and Su. First, we show that any two aperiodic elements in $\Aut(A)/\WInn(A)$ are conjugate, where $\WInn(A)$ means the subgroup of $\Aut(A)$ consisting of automorphisms which are inner in the tracial representation. In the second part of this paper, we consider a class of unital simple C*-algebras with a unique tracial state which contains the class of unital simple AT-algeb…
We show that a tracial state on a unital C*-algebra admits a Haar unitary if and only if it is diffuse, if and only if it does not dominate a tracial functional that factors through a finite-dimensional quotient. It follows that a unital C*-algebra has no finite-dimensional representations if and only if each of its tracial states admits a Haar unitary. More generally, we study when nontracial states admit Haar unitaries. In particular, we show that every state on a unital, simple, infinite-dimensional C*-algebra admits a Haar unitary. We obtain applications to the structure of reduced free pr…
Let $A$ be a stably finite simple unital $C^*$-algebra and suppose $α$ is an action of a finite group $G$ with the tracial Rokhlin property. Suppose further $A$ has real rank zero and the order on projections over $A$ is determined by traces. Then the crossed product $C^*$-algebra $C^*(G,A, α)$ also has real rank zero and order on projections over $A$ is determined by traces. Moreover, if $A$ also has stable rank one, then $C^*(G,A, α)$ also has stable rank one.
In this paper we introduce an analog of the tracial Rokhlin property, called the {\emph {projection free tracial Rokhlin property}}, for $C^*$-algebras which may not have any nontrivial projections. Using this we show that if $A$ is an infinite dimensional stably finite simple unital $C^*$-algebra with stable rank one, with strict comparison of positive elements, with only finitely many extreme tracial states, and with the property that every 2-quasi-trace is a trace, and if $α$ is an action of a finite group $G$ with the projection free tracial Rokhlin property, then the crossed product $C^*(…
We consider tracial stability, which requires that tuples of elements of a C*-algebra with a trace that nearly satisfy the relation are close to tuples that actually satisfy the relation. Here both "near" and "close" are in terms of the associated 2-norm from the trace, e.g., the Hilbert-Schmidt norm for matrices. Precise definitions are stated in terms of liftings from tracial ultraproducts of C*-algebras. We completely characterize matricial tracial stability for nuclear C*-algebras in terms of certain approximation properties for traces. For non-nuclear $C^{\ast}$-algebras we find new obstr…
We completely classify the extreme tracial states onthe cores of the C*-algebras associated with self-similar maps on compact metric spaces. We present a complete list of them. The extreme tracial states are the union of the discrete type tracial states given by measures supported on the finite orbits of the branch points and a continuous type tracial state given by the Hutchinson measure on the original self-similar set.
We characterize when the reduced C*-algebra of a group has unique tracial state, respectively, is simple, in terms of Dixmier-type properties of the group C*-algebra. We also give a simple proof of the recent result by Breuillard, Kalantar, Kennedy and Ozawa that the reduced C*-algebra of a group has unique tracial state if and only if the amenable radical of the group is trivial.
We give an explicit description of the tracial state simplex of the $C^*$-algebra $C^*(G)$ of an arbitrary connected, second countable, locally compact, solvable group $G$. We show that every tracial state of $C^*(G)$ lifts from a tracial state of the $C^*$-algebra of the abelianized group, and the intersection of the kernels of all the tracial states of $C^*(G)$ is a proper ideal unless $G$ is abelian. As a consequence, the $C^*$-algebra of a connected solvable nonabelian Lie group cannot embed into a simple unital AF-algebra.
We prove that every positive trace on a countably generated *-algebra can be approximated by positive traces on algebras of generic matrices. This implies that every countably generated tracial *-algebra can be embedded into a metric ultraproduct of generic matrix algebras. As a particular consequence, every finite von Neumann algebra with separable pre-dual can be embedded into an ultraproduct of tracial *-algebras, which as *-algebras embed into a matrix-ring over a commutative algebra.
We observe that a recent theorem of Sato, Toms-White-Winter and Kirchberg-Rordam also holds for certain nonunital C*-algebras. Namely, we show that an algebraically simple, separable, nuclear, nonelementary C*-algebra with strict comparison, whose cone of densely finite traces has as a base a Choquet simplex with compact, finite dimensional extreme boundary, and which admits a continuous rank function, tensorially absorbs the Jiang-Su algebra Z.
States on coupled quantum system whose restrictions to each subsystems are normalized traces are called marginal tracial states. We investigate extremal marginal tracial states and maximal rank of such states. Diagonal marginal tracial states are also considered.
We introduce the tracial Rokhlin property for automorphisms of stably finite simple unital C*-algebras containing enough projections. This property is formally weaker than the various Rokhlin properties considered by Herman and Ocneanu, Kishimoto, and Izumi. Our main results are as follows. Consider a stably finite simple unital C*-algebra, and an automorphism of it which has the tracial Rokhlin property. Suppose the algebra has real rank zero and stable rank one, and suppose that the order on projections over the algebra is determined by traces. Then the crossed product by the automorphism al…
We give complete descriptions of the tracial states on both the universal and reduced crossed products of a C*-dynamical system consisting of a unital C*-algebra and a discrete group. In particular, we also answer the question of when the tracial states are in canonical bijection with the invariant tracial states on the original C*-algebra. This generalizes the unique trace property for discrete groups. The analysis simplifies greatly in various cases, for example when the conjugacy classes of the original group are all finite, and in other cases gives previously known results, for example whe…
Trace inequalities are general techniques with many applications in quantum information theory, often replacing classical functional calculus in noncommutative settings. The physics of quantum field theory and holography, however, motivate entropy inequalities in type III von Neumann algebras that lack a semifinite trace. The Haagerup and Kosaki $L_p$ spaces enable re-expressing trace inequalities in non-tracial von Neumann algebras. In particular, we show this for the generalized Araki-Lieb-Thirring and Golden-Thompson inequalities from (Sutter, Berta \& Tomamichel 2017). Then, using the Haag…
The noncommutative Fourier transform of the irrational rotation C*-algebra is shown to have a K-inductive structure (at least for a large concrete class of irrational parameters, containing dense $G_δ$'s). This is a structure for automorphisms that is analogous to Huaxin Lin's notion of tracially AF for C*-algebras, except that it requires more structure from the complementary projection.
Let $A$ be a unital separable simple $C^*$-algebra with tracial rank zero and let $x, \, y\in A$ be two normal elements. We show that $x$ is in the closure of the convex full of the unitary obit of $y$ if and only if there exists a sequence of unital completely positive linear maps $ϕ_n$ from $A$ to $A$ such that the sequence $ϕ_n(y)$ convergent to $x$ in norm and also approximately preserves the trace values. A purely measure theoretical description for normal elements in the closure of convex hull of unitary orbit of $y$ is also given. In the case that $A$ has a unique tracial state some cla…
We study the problem of extending a state on an abelian $C^*$- subalgebra to a tracial state on the ambient $C^*$-algebra. We propose an approach that is well-suited to the case of regular inclusions, in which there is a large supply of normalizers of the subalgebra. Conditional expectations onto the subalgebra give natural extensions of a state to the ambient $C^*$-algebra; we prove that these extensions are tracial states if and only if certain invariance properties of both the state and conditional expectations are satisfied. In the example of a groupoid $C^*$-algebra, these invariance prop…
We establish the tracial stability of a certain class of graph products of C*-algebras. This result involves the development of the "pincushion class" of finite graphs. We then apply this result in two ways. The first application yields a selective version of Lin's Theorem for almost commuting operators. The second application addresses some approximation properties of right-angled Artin groups. In particular, we show that the full C*-algebra of any right-angled Artin group is quasidiagonal and thus has a non-trivial amenable trace, and then we apply tracial stability to show when these amenab…
Let $G$ be a finite group, $A$ a unital separable finite simple nuclear C*-algebra, and $α$ an action of $G$ on $A$. Assume that $A$ absorbs the Jiang-Su algebra $\mathcal{Z}$, the extremal boundary of the trace space of $A$ is compact and finite dimensional and that $α$ fixes any tracial state of $A$. Then tsr$(A \rtimes_αG) = 1$. In particular, when $A$ has a unique tracial state, we conclude it without above conditons on a tracial state space of $A$.
We consider unital simple inductive limits of generalized dimension drop C*-algebras They are so-called ASH-algebras and include all unital simple AH-algebras and all dimension drop $C^*$-algebras. Suppose that $A$ is one of these C*-algebras. We show that $A\otimes Q$ has tracial rank no more than one, where $Q$ is the rational UHF-algebra. As a consequence, we obtain the following classification result: Let $A$ and $B$ be two unital simple inductive limits of generalized dimension drop algebras with no dimension growth. Then $A\cong B$ if and only if they have the same Elliott invariant.
It is shown that a unital C*-algebra A has the Dixmier property if and only if it is weakly central and satisfies certain tracial conditions. This generalises the Haagerup-Zsido theorem for simple C*-algebras. We also study a uniform version of the Dixmier property, as satisfied for example by von Neumann algebras and the reduced C*-algebras of Powers groups, but not by all C*-algebras with the Dixmier property, and we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for a simple unital C*-algebra with unique tracial state to have this uniform property. We give further examples of C*-algebras with t…
We give a concrete formula for the unique faithful trace on the finite simple non-AF labeled graph $C^*$-algebra $C^*(E_{\mathbb{Z}}, \mathcal{L}, \overline{\mathcal{E}}_{\mathbb{Z}})$ associated to the Thue--Morse sequence $(E_{\mathbb{Z}}, \mathcal{L})$. Our result provides an alternative proof of the existence of a labeled graph $C^*$-algebra that is not Morita equivalent to any graph $C^*$-algebras. Furthermore, we compute the $K$-groups of $C^*(E_{\mathbb{Z}}, \mathcal{L}, \overline{\mathcal{E}}_{\mathbb{Z}})$ using the path structure of the Thue--Morse sequence.
Given a unital inductive limit of C*-algebras for which each C*-algebra of the inductive sequence comes equipped with a compact quantum metric of Rieffel, we produce sufficient conditions to build a compact quantum metric on the inductive limit from the quantum metrics on the inductive sequence by utilizing the completeness of the dual Gromov-Hausdorff propinquity of Latremoliere on compact quantum metric spaces. This allows us to place new quantum metrics on all unital AF algebras that extend our previous work with Latremoliere on unital AF algebras with faithful tracial state. As a consequen…
Let $G$ be a locally compact group. It is not always the case that its reduced C*-algebra $C^*_r(G)$ admits a tracial state. We exhibit closely related necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of such. We gain a complete answer when $G$ compactly generated. In particular for $G$ almost connected, or more generally when $C^*_r(G)$ is nuclear, the existence of a trace is equivalent to amenability. We exhibit two examples of classes of totally disconnected groups for which $C^*_r(G)$ does not admit a tracial state.
An ATAI (or ATAF, respectively) algebra, introduced in [Jiang1] (or in [Fa] respectively) is an inductive limit $\lim\limits_{n\rightarrow\infty}(A_{n}=\bigoplus\limits_{i=1}A_{n}^{i},ϕ_{nm})$, where each $A_{n}^{i}$ is a simple separable nuclear TAI (or TAF) C*-algebra with UCT property. In [Jiang1], the second author classified all ATAI algebras by an invariant consisting orderd total K-theory and tracial state spaces of cut down algebras under an extra restriction that all element in $K_{1}(A)$ are torsion. In this paper, we remove this restriction, and obtained the classification for all A…
We found that if $u$ and $v$ are any two unitaries in a unital $C^*$-algebra with $\|uv-vu\|<2$ such that $uvu^*v^*$ commutes with $u$ and $v,$ then the \SCA\, $A_{u,v}$ generated by $u$ and $v$ is isomorphic to a quotient of the rotation algebra $A_θ$ provided that $A_{u,v}$ has a unique tracial state. We also found that the Exel trace formula holds in any unital $C^*$-algebra. Let $θ\in (-1/2, 1/2)$ be a rational number. We prove the following: For any $\ep>0,$ there exists $\dt>0$ satisfying the following: if $u$ and $v$ are two unitary matrices such that $$ \|uv-e^{2πiθ}vu\|<\dt\andeqn {1\…
A classification is given of certain separable nuclear C*-algebras not necessarily of real rank zero, namely, the class of separable simple C*-algebras which are inductive limits of continuous-trace C*-algebras whose building blocks have spectrum homeomorphic to the closed interval [0,1], or to a disjoint union of copies of this space. Also, the range of the invariant is calculated.
Let $G$ be a countable abelian group. We construct a unital simple projectionless C*-algebra $A$ with a unique tracial state, that satisfies $(K_0(A), [1_A]) \cong (\Z, 1) $, $K_1(A) \cong G$, absorbs the Jiang-Su algebra tensorially, and that is obtained as the inductive limit C*-algebra of a sequence of dimension drop algebras of a specific form. This construction is based on the construction of the Jiang-Su algebra. By this construction, we show a certain conjugacy result for aperiodic automorphisms of these projectionless C*-algebras. We also show that an automorphism of this projectoinles…
In this paper we will introduce the tracial Rokhlin property for an inclusion of separable simple unital C*-algebras $P \subset A$ with finite index in the sense of Watatani, and prove theorems of the following type. Suppose that $A$ belongs to a class of C*-algebras characterized by some structural property, such as tracial rank zero in the sense of Lin. Then $P$ belongs to the same class. The classes we consider include:(1) Simple C*-algebras with real rank zero or stable rank one, (2) Simple C*-algebras with tracial rank zero or tracial rank less than or equal to one, (3) Simple C*-algebras…
Given a von Neumann algebra $M$ with a faithful normal finite trace, we introduce the so called finite tracial algebra $M_f$ as the intersection of $L_p$-spaces $L_p(M, μ)$ over all $p \geq 1$ and over all faithful normal finite traces $μ$ on $M.$ Basic algebraic and topological properties of finite tracial algebras are studied. We prove that all derivations on these algebras are inner.
We introduce a general class of automorphisms of rotation algebras, the noncommutative Furstenberg transformations. We prove that fully irrational noncommutative Furstenberg transformations have the tracial Rokhlin property, which is a strong form of outerness. We conclude that crossed products by these automorphisms have stable rank one, real rank zero, and order on projections determined by traces (Blackadar's Second Fundamental Comparability Question). We also prove that several classes of simple quotients of the C*-algebras of discrete subgroups of five dimensional nilpotent Lie groups, co…
Let A be a unital separable simple infinite-dimensional nuclear C*-algebra with at least one tracial state. We prove that if the trace space of A has compact finite-dimensional extreme boundary then there exist unital embeddings of matrix algebras into a certain central sequence algebra of A which is determined by the uniform topology on the trace space. As an application, it is shown that if furthermore A has strict comparison then A absorbs the Jiang-Su algebra tensorially.
We consider the tracial crossed product algebra $M=A\rtimesΛ$ arising from a trace preserving action $σ:Λ\curvearrowright A$ of a discrete group $Λ$ on a tracial von Neumann algebra $A$. For a unitary subgroup $\mathcal{G}\subset \mathcal{U}(M)$, we study when this $\mathcal{G}$ can be conjugated into $\mathcal{U}(A)\cdotΛ$ in $M$. We provide a general sufficient condition for this to happen. Our result generalizes a result of Ioana, Popa and Vaes, which treats the case when $M$ is the group von Neumann algebra $L(Λ)$.
It is shown that all 2-quasitraces on a unital exact C*-algebra are traces. As consequences one gets: (1) Every stably finite exact unital C*-algebra has a tracial state, and (2) if an AW*-factor of type II_1 is generated (as an AW*-algebra) by an exact C*-subalgebra, then it is a von Neumann II_1-factor. This is a partial solution to a well known problem of Kaplansky. The present result was used by Blackadar, Kumjian and Rørdam to prove that RR(A)=0 for every simple non-commutative torus of any dimension.
For a finite symmetry group $G$ of an aperiodic substitution tiling system $(\p,ω)$, we show that the crossed product of the tiling C*-algebra $\Aw$ by $G$ has real rank zero, tracial rank one, a unique trace, and that order on its K-theory is determined by the trace. We also show that the action of $G$ on $\Aw$ satisfies the weak Rokhlin property, and that it also satisfies the tracial Rokhlin property provided that $\Aw$ has tracial rank zero. In the course of proving the latter we show that $\Aw$ is finitely generated. We also provide a link between $\Aw$ and the AF algebra Connes associate…
Given a finite, directed, connected graph $Γ$ equipped with a weighting $μ$ on its edges, we provide a construction of a von Neumann algebra equipped with a faithful, normal, positive linear functional $(\mathcal{M}(Γ,μ),φ)$. When the weighting $μ$ is instead on the vertices of $Γ$, the first author showed the isomorphism class of $(\mathcal{M}(Γ,μ),φ)$ depends only on the data $(Γ,μ)$ and is an interpolated free group factor equipped with a scaling of its unique trace (possibly direct sum copies of $\mathbb{C}$). Moreover, the free dimension of the interpolated free group factor is easily com…
We relate factorizable quantum channels on $M_n$, for $n \ge 2$, via their Choi matrix, to certain correlation matrices, which, in turn, are shown to be parametrized by traces on the unital free product $M_n * M_n$. Factorizable maps that admit a finite dimensional ancilla are parametrized by finite dimensional traces on $M_n * M_n$, and factorizable maps that approximately factor through finite dimensional C*-algebras are parametrized by traces in the closure of the finite dimensional ones. The latter set is shown to be equal to the set of hyperlinear traces on $M_n * M_n$. We finally show th…
