For a hypergraph ${\mathcal H} = (V,{\mathcal E})$, its $d$--fold symmetric product is $Δ^d {\mathcal H} = (V^d,\{E^d |E \in {\mathcal E}\})$. We give several upper and lower bounds for the $c$-color discrepancy of such products. In particular, we show that the bound ${disc}(Δ^d {\mathcal H},2) \le {disc}({\mathcal H},2)$ proven for all $d$ in [B. Doerr, A. Srivastav, and P. Wehr, Discrepancy of {C}artesian products of arithmetic progressions, Electron. J. Combin. 11(2004), Research Paper 5, 16 pp.] cannot be extended to more than $c = 2$ colors. In fact, for any $c$ and $d$ such that $c$ does not divide $d!$, there are hypergraphs having arbitrary large discrepancy and ${disc}(Δ^d {\mathcal H},c) = Ω_d({disc}({\mathcal H},c)^d)$. Apart from constant factors (depending on $c$ and $d$), in these cases the symmetric product behaves no better than the general direct product ${\mathcal H}^d$, which satisfies ${disc}({\mathcal H}^d,c) = O_{c,d}({disc}({\mathcal H},c)^d)$.
Answering in a strong form a question posed by Bollobás and Scott, in this paper we determine the discrepancy between two random k-uniform hypergraphs, up to a constant factor depending solely on k.
We suggest a new method on coloring generalized Kneser graphs based on hypergraphs with high discrepancy and small number of edges. The main result is providing a proper coloring of K(n, n/2-t, s) in (4 + o(1))(s + t)^2 colors, which is produced by Hadamard matrices. Also, we show that for colorings by independent set of a natural type, this result is the best possible up to a multiplicative constant. Our method extends to Kneser hypergraphs as well.
A two-coloring of the vertices $V$ of the hypergraph $H=(V, E)$ by red and blue has discrepancy $d$ if $d$ is the largest difference between the number of red and blue points in any edge. Let $f(n)$ be the fewest number of edges in an $n$-uniform hypergraph without a coloring with discrepancy $0$. Erdős and Sós asked: is $f(n)$ unbounded? N. Alon, D. J. Kleitman, C. Pomerance, M. Saks and P. Seymour proved upper and lower bounds in terms of the smallest non-divisor ($\mbox{snd}$) of $n$. We refine the upper bound as follows: $$f (n) \leq c \log \mbox{snd}\ {n}.$$
For $f$ chosen from the $\{-1,1\}$-valued functions on the edges of a hypergraph $\mathcal{H} = (V,E)$ with $\sum_{e \in E} f(e) = 0$, how large can one make $\min_{v \in V} |\sum_{e \ni v} f(e)|$? This question may be viewed as a reverse version of the hypergraph discrepancy problem or as a relaxation of the zero-sum Ramsey problem for stars. We prove exact results when $\mathcal{H}$ is a complete or equipartite hypergraph.
For a graph G, a signed domination function of G is a two-colouring of the vertices of G with colours +1 and -1 such that the closed neighbourhood of every vertex contains more +1's than -1's. This concept is closely related to combinatorial discrepancy theory as shown by Fueredi and Mubayi [J. Combin. Theory, Ser. B 76 (1999) 223-239]. The signed domination number of G is the minimum of the sum of colours for all vertices, taken over all signed domination functions of G. In this paper, we present new upper and lower bounds for the signed domination number. These new bounds improve a number of…

We study hypergraph discrepancy in two closely related random models of hypergraphs on $n$ vertices and $m$ hyperedges. The first model, $\mathcal{H}_1$, is when every vertex is present in exactly $t$ randomly chosen hyperedges. The premise of this is closely tied to, and motivated by the Beck-Fiala conjecture. The second, perhaps more natural model, $\mathcal{H}_2$, is when the entries of the $m \times n$ incidence matrix is sampled in an i.i.d. fashion, each with probability $p$. We prove the following: 1. In $\mathcal{H}_1$, when $\log^{10}n \ll t \ll \sqrt{n}$, and $m = n$, we show that th…
Let $\mathcal{H}$ be a $t$-regular hypergraph on $n$ vertices and $m$ edges. Let $M$ be the $m \times n$ incidence matrix of $\mathcal{H}$ and let us denote $λ=\max_{v \perp \overline{1},\|v\| = 1}\|Mv\|$. We show that the discrepancy of $\mathcal{H}$ is $O(\sqrt{t} + λ)$. As a corollary, this gives us that for every $t$, the discrepancy of a random $t$-regular hypergraph with $n$ vertices and $m \geq n$ edges is almost surely $O(\sqrt{t})$ as $n$ grows. The proof also gives a polynomial time algorithm that takes a hypergraph as input and outputs a coloring with the above guarantee.
Erdős and Pach (1983) introduced the natural degree-based generalisations of Ramsey numbers, where instead of seeking large monochromatic cliques in a $2$-edge coloured complete graph, we seek monochromatic subgraphs of high minimum or average degree. Here we expand the study of these so-called quasi-Ramsey numbers in a few ways, in particular, to multiple colours and to uniform hypergraphs. Quasi-Ramsey numbers are known to exhibit a certain unique phase transition and we show that this is also the case across the settings we consider. Our results depend on a density-biased notion of hypergra…
We consider a generalization of the classical game of $NIM$ called hypergraph $NIM$. Given a hypergraph $\cH$ on the ground set $V = \{1, \ldots, n\}$ of $n$ piles of stones, two players alternate in choosing a hyperedge $H \in \cH$ and strictly decreasing all piles $i\in H$. The player who makes the last move is the winner. Recently it was shown that for many classes of hypergraphs the Sprague-Grundy function of the corresponding game is given by the formula introduced originally by Jenkyns and Mayberry (1980). In this paper we characterize symmetric hypergraphs for which the Sprague-Grundy f…
It is well known that a graph is bipartite if and only if the spectrum of its adjacency matrix is symmetric. In the present paper, this assertion is dissected into three separate matrix results of wider scope, which are extended also to hypermatrices. To this end the concept of bipartiteness is generalized by a new monotone property of cubical hypermatrices, called odd-colorable matrices. It is shown that a nonnegative symmetric $r$-matrix $A$ has a symmetric spectrum if and only if $r$ is even and $A$ is odd-colorable. This result also solves a problem of Pearson and Zhang about hypergraphs w…
The chromatic symmetric function $X_H$ of a hypergraph $H$ is the generating function for all colorings of $H$ so that no edge is monochromatic. When $H$ is an ordinary graph, it is known that $X_H$ is positive in the fundamental quasisymmetric functions $F_S$, but this is not the case for general hypergraphs. We exhibit a class of hypergraphs $H$ --- hypertrees with prime-sized edges --- for which $X_H$ is $F$-positive, and give an explicit combinatorial interpretation for the $F$-coefficients of $X_H$.

Let $t\geqslant 2$ and $s\geqslant 1$ be two integers. Define a $(t,s)$-coloring of a hypergraph to be a coloring of its vertices using $t$ colors such that each color appears on each edge at least $s$ times. In this note, we provide a sufficient condition for the existence of a $(t,s)$-coloring of a hypergraph by using the symmetric lopsided version of Lovász Local Lemma. Our result generalizes several known results on hypergraph colorings.
For a nonnegative symmetric weakly irreducible tensor, its spectral radius is an eigenvalue corresponding to a unique positive eigenvector up to a scalar called the Perron vector. But including the Perron vector, there may have more than one eigenvector corresponding to the spectral radius. The projective eigenvariety associated with the spectral radius is the set of the eigenvectors corresponding to the spectral radius considered in the complex projective space. In this paper we proved that such projective eigenvariety admits a module structure, which is determined by the support of the tenso…
A celebrated result of Rödl and Ruciński states that for every graph $F$, which is not a forest of stars and paths of length $3$, and fixed number of colours $r\ge 2$ there exist positive constants $c, C$ such that for $p \leq cn^{-1/m_2(F)}$ the probability that every colouring of the edges of the random graph $G(n,p)$ contains a monochromatic copy of $F$ is $o(1)$ (the "0-statement"), while for $p \geq Cn^{-1/m_2(F)}$ it is $1-o(1)$ (the "1-statement"). Here $m_2(F)$ denotes the $2$-density of $F$. On the other hand, the case where $F$ is a forest of stars has a coarse threshold which is det…
Let $\mathcal{A}$ be a weakly irreducible nonnegative tensor with spectral radius $ρ(\mathcal{A})$. Let $\mathfrak{D}$ (respectively, $\mathfrak{D}^{(0)}$) be the set of normalized diagonal matrices arising from the eigenvectors of $\mathcal{A}$ corresponding to the eigenvalues with modulus $ρ(\mathcal{A})$ (respectively, the eigenvalue $ρ(\mathcal{A})$). It is shown that $\mathfrak{D}$ is an abelian group containing $\mathfrak{D}^{(0)}$ as a subgroup, which acts transitively on the set $\{e^{\mathbf{i} \frac{2 πj}{\ell}}\mathcal{A}:j =0,1, \ldots,\ell-1\}$, where $|\mathfrak{D}/\mathfrak{D}^{…
Let $r\geq2$ and $r$ be even. An $r$-hypergraph $G$ on $n$ vertices is called odd-colorable if there exists a map $φ:[n]\rightarrow\lbrack r]$ such that for any edge $\{j_{1},j_{2},\cdots,j_{r}\}$ of $G$, we have $φ(j_{1})+φ(j_{2})+\cdot\cdot\cdot+φ(j_{r})\equiv r/2(\operatorname{mod}r).$ In this paper, we first determine that, if $r=2^{q}(2t+1)$ and $n\ge 2^{q}(2^{q}-1)r$, then the maximum chromatic number in the class of the odd-colorable $r$-hypergraphs on $n$ vertices is $2^q$, which answers a question raised by V. Nikiforov recently in [V. Nikiforov, Hypergraphs and hypermatrices with sym…
In this paper, we show that a uniform hypergraph $\mathcal{G}$ is connected if and only if one of its inverse Perron values is larger than $0$. We give some bounds on the bipartition width, isoperimetric number and eccentricities of $\mathcal{G}$ in terms of inverse Perron values. By using the inverse Perron values, we give an estimation of the edge connectivity of a $2$-design, and determine the explicit edge connectivity of a symmetric design. Moreover, relations between the inverse Perron values and resistance distance of a connected graph are presented.
A triple system is cancellative if it does not contain three distinct sets $A,B,C$ such that the symmetric difference of $A$ and $B$ is contained in $C$. We show that every cancellative triple system $\mathcal{H}$ that satisfies certain inequality between the sizes of $\mathcal{H}$ and its shadow must be structurally close to the balanced blowup of some Steiner triple system. Our result contains a stability theorem for cancellative triple systems due to Keevash and Mubayi as a special case. It also implies that the boundary of the feasible region of cancellative triple systems has infinitely m…
Unlike an irreducible $Z$-matrices, a weakly irreducible $Z$-tensor $\mathcal{A}$ can have more than one eigenvector associated with the least H-eigenvalue. We show that there are finitely many eigenvectors of $\mathcal{A}$ associated with the least H-eigenvalue. If $\mathcal{A}$ is further combinatorial symmetric, the number of such eigenvectors can be obtained explicitly by the Smith normal form of the incidence matrix of $\mathcal{A}$. When applying to a connected uniform hypergraph $G$, we prove that the number of Laplacian eigenvectors of $G$ associated with the zero eigenvalue is equal t…

Let $\binom{X}{h}$ be the collection of all $h$-subsets of an $n$-set $X\supseteq Y$. Given a coloring (partition) of a set $S\subseteq \binom{X}{h}$, we are interested in finding conditions under which this coloring is extendible to a coloring of $\binom{X}{h}$ so that the number of times each element of $X$ appears in each color class (all sets of the same color) is the same number $r$. The case $S=\varnothing, r=1$ was studied by Sylvester in the 18th century, and remained open until the 1970s. The case $h=2,r=1$ is extensively studied in the literature and is closely related to completing …
In the stochastic online vector balancing problem, vectors $v_1,v_2,\ldots,v_T$ chosen independently from an arbitrary distribution in $\mathbb{R}^n$ arrive one-by-one and must be immediately given a $\pm$ sign. The goal is to keep the norm of the discrepancy vector, i.e., the signed prefix-sum, as small as possible for a given target norm. We consider some of the most well-known problems in discrepancy theory in the above online stochastic setting, and give algorithms that match the known offline bounds up to $\mathsf{polylog}(nT)$ factors. This substantially generalizes and improves upon the…
