In this article we consider surfaces in the product space $\h^2\times \r$ of the hyperbolic plane $\h^2$ with the real line. The main results are: a description of some geometric properties of minimal graphs; new examples of complete minimal graphs; the classification of umbilical surfaces.
When using Traizet's regeneration technique to construct minimal surfaces, the simplest nontrivial configurations are given as the roots of polynomials that satisfy a hypergeometric differential equation. We exhibit examples of simple minimal surfaces exhibiting the same behavior.
We prove that first-order flexes of smooth surfaces in Euclidean 3-space, which are tangent to the set of all nonrigid surfaces, can be extended to second-order flexes.
In this note, we show that the examples of non Berwaldian Landsberg surfaces with vanishing flag curvature, obtained in \cite{Zhou}, are in fact Berwaldian. Consequently, Bryant's claim is still unverified.
We construct complete nonorientable minimal surfaces whose Gauss map omits two points of the projective plane. This result proves that Fujimoto's theorem is sharp in nonorientable case.
This note derives parametrizations for surfaces of revolution that satisfy an affine-linear relation between their respective curvature radii. Alongside, parametrizations for the uniform normal offsets of those surfaces are obtained. Those parametrizations are found explicitly for a countably-infinite many of them, and of those, it is shown which are algebraic. Lastly, for those surfaces which have a constant ratio of principal curvatures, parametrizations with a constant angle between the parameter curves are found.
Most known examples of doubly periodic minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^3$ with parallel ends limit as a foliation of $\mathbb{R}^3$ by horizontal noded planes, with the location of the nodes satisfying a set of balance equations. Conversely, for each set of points providing a balanced configuration, there is a corresponding three-parameter family of doubly periodic minimal surfaces. In this note we derive a differential equation that is equivalent to the balance equations for doubly periodic minimal surfaces. This allows for the generation of many more solutions to the balance equations, enabl…
In the special case of S^1 invariant metrics on S^2, we find necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of isometric embeddings into the canonical R^3, in other words: a Weyl type theorem with converse.
In this paper, the general formulation for inextensible flows of curves on oriented surface in $\mathbb{R}^3 $ is investigated. The necessary and sufficient conditions for inextensible curve flow lying an oriented surface are expressed as a partial differential equation involving the geodesic curvature and the geodesic torsion. Moreover, some special cases of inextensible curves on oriented surface are given.
Using Schauder's theory for linear elliptic partial differential equations in two independent variables and fundamental estimates for univalent mappings due to E. Heinz we establish an upper bound of the Gaussian curvature of two-dimensional minimal surface graphs in R^n. This leads us to a theorem of Bernstein-Liouville type.
We prove that, under a semi-ampleness type assumption on the twisted canonical line bundle, the conical Kähler-Ricci flow on a minimal elliptic Kähler surface converges in the sense of currents to a generalized conical Kähler-Einstein on its canonical model. Moreover, the convergence takes place smoothly outside the singular fibers and the chosen divisor.
It was proved that the fundamental group of the space of harmonic polynomials of degree $n(n \geq 2)$, with the same Gaussian curvature is not trivial. Furthermore, we give an example of topologically nonequivalent conjugate harmonic functions having the same Gaussian curvature.
We describe the gauge-theoretic approach to transformations in integrable geometry through discussion of two classical examples: surfaces of constant negative Gauss curvature and isothermic surfaces. These are purely expository notes written to accompany some lectures I gave in Fukuoka in May 2015.
We give a short proof of the following fact. Let $Σ$ be a connected, finitely connected, noncompact manifold without boundary. If $g$ is a complete Riemannian metric on $Σ$ whose Gaussian curvature $K$ is nonnegative at infinity, then $K$ must be integrable. In particular, we obtain a new short proof of the fact that if $Σ$ admits a complete metric whose Gaussian curvature is nonnegative and positive at one point, then $Σ$ is diffeomorphic to $\mathbb{R}^2$.
In this paper, we provide families of second order non-linear partial differential equations, describing pseudospherical surfaces (pss equations), with the property of having local isometric immersions in E^3, with principal curvatures depending on finite-order jets of solutions of the differential equation. These equations occupy a particularly special place amongst pss equations, since a series of recent papers [2, 7, 11, 12, 13], on several classes of pss equations, seemed to suggest that only the sine-Gordon equation had the above property. Explicit examples are given, which include the sh…
This paper deals with relative normalizations of skew ruled surfaces in the Euclidean space $\mathbb{E}^{3}$. In section 2 we investigate some new formulae concerning the Pick invariant, the relative curvature, the relative mean curvature and the curvature of the relative metric of a relatively normalized ruled surface $\varPhi$ and in section 3 we introduce some special normalizations of it. All ruled surfaces and their corresponding normalizations that make $\varPhi$ an improper or a proper relative sphere are determined in section 4. In the last section we study ruled surfaces, which are \e…
In this paper a bijective correspondence between superminimal surfaces of an oriented Riemannian $4$-manifold and particular Lagrangian submanifolds of the twistor space over the $4$-manifold is proven. More explicitly, for every superminimal surface a submanifold of the twistor space is constructed which is Lagrangian for all the natural almost Hermitian structures on the twistor space. The twistor fibration restricted to the constructed Lagrangian gives a circle bundle over the superminimal surface. Conversely, if a submanifold of the twistor space is Lagrangian for all the natural almost He…
For any closed Riemannian three-manifold, we prove that for any sequence of closed embedded minimal surfaces with uniformly bounded index, the genus can only grow at most linearly with respect to the area.
Let X be a compact toric surface. There exists a sequence of torus equivariant blow-ups of X such that the blown-up toric surface obtained admits a cscK metric.
These are notes on the theory of super Riemann surfaces and their moduli spaces, aiming to collect results that are useful for a better understanding of superstring perturbation theory in the RNS formalism.
In this paper, we study the spherical indicatrices of W-direction curves in three dimensional Euclidean space which were defined by using the unit Darboux vector field W of a Frenet curve, in [11]. We obtain the Frenet apparatus of these spherical indicatrix curves and the characterizations of being general helix and slant helix. Moreover we give some properties between the spherical indicatrix curves and their associated curves. Then we investigate two special ruled surface that are normal and binormal surface by using W-direction curves. We give useful results involving the char- acterizatio…
The classical result of Nevanlinna states that two nonconstant meromorphic functions on the complex plane having the same images for five distinct values must be identically equal to each other. In this paper, we give a similar uniqueness theorem for the Gauss maps of complete minimal surfaces in Euclidean four-space.
In this note we investigate free boundary minimal surfaces in the Euclidean 3-space, and by using holomorphic techniques developed by Fraser and Schoen we prove that the free boundary minimal annulus is the critical catenoid.
In this note, we show that the solution to the Dirichlet problem for the minimal surface system in any codimension is unique in the space of distance-decreasing maps. This follows as a corollary of the following stability theorem: if a minimal submanifold $Σ$ is the graph of a (strictly) distance-decreasing map, then $Σ$ is (strictly) stable. It is known that a minimal graph of codimension one is stable without assuming the distance-decreasing condition. We give another criterion for the stability in terms of the two-Jacobians of the map which in particular covers the codimension one case. All…
We derive an inequality that relates nodal set and eigenvalues of a class of twisted Dirac operators on closed surfaces and point out how this inequality naturally arises as an eigenvalue estimate for the $\rm Spin^c$ Dirac operator. This allows us to obtain eigenvalue estimates for the twisted Dirac operator appearing in the context of Dirac-harmonic maps and their extensions, from which we also obtain several Liouville type results.
The study of the relation between the Weierstrass inducing formulae for constant mean curvature surfaces and the completely integrable euclidean nonlinear sigma-model suggests a connection among integrable sigma -models in a background and other type of surfaces. We show how a generalization of the Weierstrass representation can be achieved and we establish a connection with the Weingarten surfaces. We suggest also a possible generalization for two-dimensional surfaces immersed in a flat space R^8 with Euclidean metric.
We examine the large systole problem, which concerns compact hyperbolic Riemannian surfaces whose systole, the length of the shortest noncontractible loops, grows logarithmically in genus. The generalization of a construction of Buser and Sarnak by Katz, Schaps, and Vishne, which uses principal "congruence" subgroups of a fixed cocompact arithmetic Fuchsian, achieves the current maximum known growth constant of γ= 4/3. We prove that this is the best possible value of γfor this construction using arithmetic Fuchsians in the congruence case. The final section compares the large systole problem w…
Motivated by problems on apparent horizons in general relativity, we prove the following theorem on minimal surfaces: Let $g$ be a metric on the three-sphere $S^3$ satisfying $Ric(g) \geq 2 g$. If the volume of $(S^3, g)$ is no less than one half of the volume of the standard unit sphere, then there are no closed minimal surfaces in the asymptotically flat manifold $(S^3 \setminus \{P \}, G^4 g)$. Here $G$ is the Green's function of the conformal Laplacian of $(S^3, g)$ at an arbitrary point $P$. We also give an example of $(S^3, g)$ with $Ric(g) > 0$ where $(S^3 \setminus \{P \}, G^4 g)$ does…
It is a theorem of Bers that any closed hyperbolic surface admits a pants decomposition consisting of curves of bounded length where the bound only depends on the topology of the surface. The question of the quantification of the optimal constants has been well studied and the best upper bounds to date are linear in genus, a theorem of Buser and Seppälä. The goal of this note is to give a short proof of an linear upper bound which slightly improves the best known bounds.
In this note we present a method for constructing CMC-1 surfaces in hyperbolic 3-space $\bfH^3(-1)$ in terms of holomorphic data first introduced in Bianchi's Lezioni di Geometria Differenziale of 1927, therefore predating by many years the modern approaches due to Bryant, Small and others. Besides its obvious historical interest, this note aims to complement Bianchi's analysis by deriving explicit formulae for CMC-1 surfaces and comparing the various approaches encountered in the literature.
We define the notion of an exceptional manifold to be a flat Riemannian manifold with boundary which supports a positive harmonic function satisfying simultaneously a zero Dirichlet condition and a constant (nonzero) Neumann condtion at the boundary. We study the two-dimensional case: we present various examples and give a general construction algorithm of such surface by using complex analysis. We deduce a classification of all such surfaces assuming some further natural hypotheses and prove a Bernstein type theorem.
