We introduce the characteristic class of an l-adic etale sheaf using a cohomological pairing due to Verdier (SGA5). As a consequence of the Lefschetz-Verdier trace formula, its trace computes the Euler-Poincare characteristic of the sheaf. We compare the characteristic class to two other invariants arising from ramification theory. One is the Swan class of Kato-Saito (math.AG/0402010) and the other is the 0-cycle class defined by Kato for rank 1 sheaves.
We propose a geometric method to measure the wild ramification of a smooth etale sheaf along the boundary. Using the method, we study the graded quotients of the logarithmic ramification groups of a local field of positive characteristic with arbitrary residue field. We also define the characteristic cycle of an l-adic sheaf, satisfying certain conditions, as a cycle on the logarithmic cotangent bundle and prove that the intersection with the 0-section computes the characteristic class, and hence the Euler number. Definition 2.1.1 is corrected in v2.
We prove a purely local form of a result of Saito and Yatagawa. They proved that the characteristic cycle of a constructible étale sheaf is determined by wild ramification of the sheaf along the boundary of a compactification. But they had to consider ramification at all the points of the compactification. We give a pointwise result, that is, we prove that the characteristic cycle of a constructible étale sheaf around a point is determined by wild ramification at the point. The key ingredient is to prove that wild ramification of the stalk of the nearby cycle complex of a constructible étale s…
In this article, we give a bound for the wild ramification of the monodromy action on the nearby cycles complex of a locally constant étale sheaf on the generic fiber of a smooth scheme over an equal characteristic trait in terms of Abbes and Saito's logarithmic ramification filtration. This provides a positive answer to the main conjecture in Isabel Leal's article "On the ramification of étale cohomology groups" for smooth morphisms in equal characteristic. We also study the ramification along vertical divisors of étale sheaves on relative curves and abelian schemes over a trait.
We prove that wild ramification of a constructible sheaf on a surface is determined by that of the restrictions to all curves. We deduce from this result that the Euler-Poincaré characteristic of a constructible sheaf on a variety of arbitrary dimension over an algebraically closed field is determined by wild ramification of the restrictions to all curves. We similarly deduce from it that so is the alternating sum of the Swan conductors of the cohomology groups, for a constructible sheaf on a variety over a local field.
We compute the characteristic cycle of a rank one sheaf on a smooth surface over a perfect field of positive characteristic. We construct a canonical lifting on the cotangent bundle of Kato's logarithmic characteristic cycle using ramification theory and prove the equality of the characteristic cycle and the canonical lifting. As corollaries, we obtain a computation of the singular support in terms of ramification theory.
Let $K$ be a complete discrete valuation field whose residue field is perfect and of positive characteristic, let $X$ be a connected, proper scheme over $\mathcal{O}_K$, and let $U$ be the complement in $X$ of a divisor with simple normal crossings. Assume that the pair $(X,U)$ is strictly semi-stable over $\mathcal{O}_K$ of relative dimension one and $K$ is of equal characteristic. We prove that, for any smooth $\ell$-adic sheaf $\mathscr{G}$ on $U$ of rank one, at most tamely ramified on the generic fiber, if the ramification of $\mathscr{G}$ is bounded by $t+$ for the logarithmic upper rami…
We prove a twist formula for the epsilon factor of a constructible sheaf on a projective smooth variety over a finite field in terms of characteristic class of the sheaf. This formula is a modified version of the formula conjectured by Kato and Saito in [Ann. Math., 168 (2008):33-96, Conjecture 4.3.11]. We give two applications of the twist formula. Firstly, we prove that the characteristic classes of constructible étale sheaves on projective smooth varieties over a finite field are compatible with proper push-forward. Secondly, we show that the two Swan classes in the literature are the same …
Deligne and Kato proved a formula computing the dimension of the nearby cycles complex of an l-adic sheaf on a relative curve over an excellent strictly henselian trait. In this article, we reprove this formula using Abbes-Saito's ramification theory.
For a constructible étale sheaf on a smooth variety of positive characteristic ramified along an effective divisor, the largest slope in Abbes and Saito's ramification theory of the sheaf gives a divisor with rational coefficients called the conductor divisor. In this article, we prove decreasing properties of the conductor divisor after pull-backs. The main ingredient behind is the construction of étale sheaves with pure ramifications. As applications, we first prove a lower semi-continuity property for conductors of étale sheaves on relative curves in the equal characteristic case, which sup…
We compute the singular support and the characteristic cycle of a rank 1 sheaf on a smooth variety in codimension 2 using ramification theory, when the ramification of the sheaf is clean. We develop a general theory, called the partially logarithmic ramification theory, and define an algebraic cycle on a logarithmic cotangent bundle with partial logarithmic poles along the boundary. We prove that the inverse image of the support of the cycle and the pull-back of the cycle to the cotangent bundle are equal to the singular support and the characteristic cycle, respectively, outside a closed subs…
For an $\ell$-adic sheaf on a variety of arbitrary dimension over a perfect field, we define the Swan class measuring the wild ramification as a 0-cycle class supported on the ramification locus. We prove a Lefschetz trace formula for open varieties and a generalization of the Grothendieck-Ogg-Shararevich formula using the Swan class.
Let $C=A(r, r')$ be a closed annulus of radii $r$ and $r'$ ($r < r' \in \mathbb{Q}_{\geq 0}$) over a complete discrete valuation field with algebraically closed residue field of characteristic $p>0$. To an étale sheaf of $\mathbb{F}_{\ell}$-modules $\mathcal{F}$ on $C$, ramified at most at a finite set of rigid points of $C$, we associate an Abbes-Saito Swan conductor function $\mathrm{sw}_{\mathrm{AS}}(\mathcal{F}, \cdot): [r, r']\cap \mathbb{Q}_{\geq 0} \to \mathbb{Q}$ which, for the variable $t$, measures the ramification of $\mathcal{F}\lvert C^{[t]}$ - the restriction of $\mathcal{F}$ to …
For a smooth toric variety X over a field of positive characteristic, a T-equivariant étale cover Y \rightarrow T^*X^{(1)} trivializing the sheaf of crystalline differential operators on X is constructed. This trivialization is used to show that the sheaf of differential operators is a trivial Azumaya algebra along the fibers of the moment map. This result is then extended to certain Azumaya algebras on hypertoric varieties, whose global sections are central reductions of the hypertoric enveloping algebra in positive characteristic. A criteria for a derived Beilinson-Bernstein localization the…
We prove that every connected affine scheme of positive characteristic is a K(pi, 1) space for the etale topology. The main ingredient is the special case of the affine space over a field k. This is dealt with by induction on n, using a key "Bertini-type"' statement regarding the wild ramification of l-adic local systems on affine spaces, which might be of independent interest. Its proof uses in an essential way recent advances in higher ramification theory due to T. Saito. We also give rigid analytic and mixed characteristic versions of the main result.
This article studies the variation of the Swan conductor of a lisse étale sheaf of $\mathbb{F}_{\ell}$-modules $\mathcal{F}$ on the rigid unit disc $D$ over a complete discrete valuation field $K$ with algebraically closed residue field of characteristic $p\neq \ell$. We associate to $\mathcal{F}$ a function ${\rm sw}_{\rm AS}(\mathcal{F}, \cdot): \mathbb{Q}_{\geq 0}\to \mathbb{Q}$, defined with the Abbes-Saito logarithmic ramification filtration, which measures, at each $t\in \mathbb{Q}_{\geq 0}$, the ramification of the restriction of $\mathcal{F}$ to the subdisc of radius $t$ along the spec…
We construct the Weil-étale cohomology and Euler characteristics for a subclass of the class of $\mathbb{Z}$-constructible sheaves on the spectrum of the ring of integers of a totally imaginary number field. Then we show that the special value of an Artin L-function of toric type at zero is given by the Weil-étale Euler characteristic of an appropriate $\mathbb{Z}$-constructible sheaf up to signs. As applications of our result, we will derive some classical formulas of special values of L-functions of tori and their class numbers.
Let k be a complete discrete valuation field of equal characteristic p>0. Using the tools of p-adic differential modules, we define refined Artin and Swan conductors for a representation of the absolute Galois group $G_k$ with finite local monodromy; this leads to a description of the subquotients of the ramification filtration on $G_k$. We prove that our definition of the refined Swan conductors coincide with that is given by Saito, which uses etale cohomology. We also study its relation with the toroidal variation of the Swan conductors.
We define the characteristic cycle of an etale sheaf as a cycle on the cotangent bundle of a smooth variety in positive characteristic using the singular support recently defined by Beilinson. We prove a formula a la Milnor for the total dimension of the space of vanishing cycles and an index formula computing the Euler-Poincare characteristic, generalizing the Grothendieck-Ogg-Shafarevich formula to higher dimension. An essential ingredient of the construction and the proof is a partial generalization to higher dimension of the semi-continuity of the Swan conductor due to Deligne-Laumon. We p…
We the study of the monodromy of local systems with bounded ramification on a punctured disc defined over a non-archimedean valued field of characteristic zero. First, we construct the local Fourier transforms and we establish their main properties. Also, we show that the Fourier transform of a "perverse sheaf" with bounded ramification on the affine line, is again a "perverse sheaf" with bounded ramification (we put that in quotes, because actually the language of perversity is not used). These foundations are then used to exhibit a natural break decomposition for local systems with bounded r…
The Grothendieck-Ogg-Shafarevich formula expresses the Euler characteristic of an etale sheaf on a curve in terms of local data. The purpose of this paper is to prove a version of the G-O-S formula which applies to equicharacteristic sheaves (a bound, rather than an equality). This follows a proposal of R. Pink. The basis for the result is the characteristic-p "Riemann-Hilbert" correspondence, which relates equicharacteristic etale sheaves to O_{F, X}-modules. In the paper we prove a version of this correspondence for curves, considering both local and global settings. In the process we define…
We define the characteristic cycle of a locally constant étale sheaf on a smooth variety in positive characteristic ramified along boundary as a cycle in the cotangent bundle of the variety, at least on a neighborhood of the generic point of the divisor on the boundary. The crucial ingredient in the definition is an additive structure on the boundary induced by the groupoid structure of multiple self products. We prove a compatibility with pull-back and local acyclicity in non-characteristic situations. We also give a relation with the characteristic cohomology class under a certain condition …
We define generalizations of classical invariants of wild ramification for coverings on a variety of arbitrary dimension over a local field. For an l-adic sheaf, we define its Swan class as a 0-cycle class supported on the wild ramification locus. We prove a formula of Riemann-Roch type for the Swan conductor of cohomology together with its relative version, assuming that the local field is of mixed characteristic. We also prove the integrality of the Swan class for curves over a local field as a generalization of the Hasse-Arf theorem. We derive a proof of a conjecture of Serre on the Artin c…
This article is devoted to studying the ramification of Galois torsors and of $\ell$-adic sheaves in characteristic $p>0$ (with $\ell\not=p$). Let $k$ be a perfect field of characteristic $p>0$, $X$ be a smooth, separated and quasi-compact $k$-scheme, $D$ be a simple normal crossing divisor on $X$, $U=X-D$, $Λ$ be a finite local ${\mathbb Z}_\ell$-algebra, $F$ be a locally constant constructible sheaf of $Λ$-modules on $U$. We introduce a boundedness condition on the ramification of $F$ along $D$, and study its main properties, in particular, some specialization properties that lead to the fun…
We apply the theory of the radius of convergence of a p-adic connection to the special case of the direct image of the constant connection via a finite morphism of compact p-adic curves, smooth in the sense of rigid geometry. In the case of an etale covering of curves with good reduction, we get a lower bound for that radius and obtain a new geometric proof of a variant of the p-adic Rolle theorem of Robert and Berkovich. We take this opportunity to clarify the relation between our notion of radius of convergencand the more intrinsic one used by Kedlaya
The Grothendieck-Ogg-Shafarevich formula calculates the l-adic Euler-Poincare number of an l-adic sheaf on a curve by an invariant produced by the wild ramification of the l-adic sheaf named Swan class. A. Abbes, K. Kato and T. Saito generalize this formula to any dimensional scheme. In this paper, assuming the strong resolution of singularities we prove a localized version of a formula proved by A. Abbes and T. Saito using the characteristic class of an l-adic sheaf. As an application, we prove a conductor formula in equal characteristic.
We develop a new approach to construction of numerical invariants for ramified coverings of algebraic surfaces of prime characteristic. Let A be a two-dimensional regular local ring of prime characteristic p with algebraically closed residue field. Let L/K be a solvable finite Galois extension of its fraction field. Let C be a germ of a regular curve on the spectrum of A which is not a component of the ramification divisor R. Then L/K determines (up to conjugation) an extension of the function filed of C. This is an extension of discrete valuation fields with algebaically closed residue fields…
Let $X$ be a compact Kähler space with klt singularities and vanishing first Chern class. We prove the Bochner principle for holomorphic tensors on the smooth locus of $X$: any such tensor is parallel with respect to the singular Ricci-flat metrics. As a consequence, after a finite quasi-étale cover $X$ splits off a complex torus of the maximum possible dimension. We then proceed to decompose the tangent sheaf of $X$ according to its holonomy representation. In particular, we classify those $X$ which have strongly stable tangent sheaf: up to quasi-étale covers, these are either irreducible Cal…
Let $L$ be a complete discrete valuation field of prime characteristic $p$ with finite residue field. Denote by $Γ_{L}^{(v)}$ the ramification subgroups of $Γ_{L}=\operatorname{Gal}(L^{sep}/L)$. We consider the category $\operatorname{MΓ}_{L}^{Lie}$ of finite $\mathbb{Z}_p[Γ_{L}]$-modules $H$, satisfying some additional (Lie)-condition on the image of $Γ_L$ in $\operatorname{Aut}_{\mathbb{Z}_p}H$. In the paper it is proved that all information about the images of the ramification subgroups $Γ_L^{(v)}$ can be explicitly extracted from some differential forms $Ω[N]$ on the Fontaine etale $ϕ$-mod…
We develop, for an l-adic etale sheaf on a complete trait of characteristic p>0, the notion of characteristic variety. Our approach, inspired by the microlocal analysis of Kashiwara and Schapira, is a complement to our ramification theory for local fields with general residue fields. We formulate the main property that should be satisfied by the characteristic variety (the isogeny conjecture), and prove it for rank one sheaves unconditionally on the trait, or unconditionally on the sheaf if the residue field of the trait is perfect.
The tangential ramification locus $B_{X/Y}^t\subset B_{X/Y}$ is the subset of points in the ramification locus where the sheaf of relative vector fields $T_{X/Y}$ fails to be locally free. It was conjectured by Zariski and Lipman that if $V/k$ is a variety over a field $k$ of characteristic 0 and $B^t_{V/k}= \emptyset$, then $V/k$ is smooth (=regular). We prove this conjecture when $V/k$ is a locally complete intersection. We prove also that $B_{V/k}^t= \emptyset$ implies $\operatorname {codim}_V B_{V/k}\leq 1 $ in positive characteristic, if $V/k $ is the fibre of a flat morphism satisfying g…
