This article is devoted to studying the ramification of Galois torsors and of $\ell$-adic sheaves in characteristic $p>0$ (with $\ell\not=p$). Let $k$ be a perfect field of characteristic $p>0$, $X$ be a smooth, separated and quasi-compact $k$-scheme, $D$ be a simple normal crossing divisor on $X$, $U=X-D$, $Λ$ be a finite local ${\mathbb Z}_\ell$-algebra, $F$ be a locally constant constructible sheaf of $Λ$-modules on $U$. We introduce a boundedness condition on the ramification of $F$ along $D$, and study its main properties, in particular, some specialization properties that lead to the fundamental notion of cleanliness and to the definition of the characteristic cycle of $F$. The cleanliness condition extends the one introduced by Kato for rank one sheaves. Roughly speaking, it means that the ramification of $F$ along $D$ is controlled by its ramification at the generic points of $D$. Under this condition, we propose a conjectural Riemann-Roch type formula for $F$. Some cases of this formula have been previously proved by Kato and by the second author (T.S.).
In this article, we prove that the Swan conductor of an étale sheaf on a smooth variety defined by Abbes and Saito's logarithmic ramification theory can be computed by its classical Swan conductors after restricting it to curves. It extends the same result for rank 1 sheaves due to Barrientos. As an application, we give a logarithmic ramification version of generalizations of Deligne and Laumon's lower semi-continuity property for Swan conductors of étale sheaves on relative curves to higher relative dimensions in a geometric situation.
In this article, we give a bound for the wild ramification of the monodromy action on the nearby cycles complex of a locally constant étale sheaf on the generic fiber of a smooth scheme over an equal characteristic trait in terms of Abbes and Saito's logarithmic ramification filtration. This provides a positive answer to the main conjecture in Isabel Leal's article "On the ramification of étale cohomology groups" for smooth morphisms in equal characteristic. We also study the ramification along vertical divisors of étale sheaves on relative curves and abelian schemes over a trait.
We give a new geometric characterization of the motivic ramification filtration of reciprocity sheaves, by imitating a method used by Abbes and (Takeshi) Saito to study the ramification of torsors under finite étale groups. This new characterization is used to define characteristic forms for reciprocity sheaves. We obtain applications on pseudo-rational singularities and on questions regarding the representability of certain cohomology groups of reciprocity sheaves in the triangulated category of motives with modulus introduced by Kahn-Miyazaki-Saito-Yamazaki.
These are the notes accompanying 13 lectures given by the authors at the Clay Mathematics Institute Summer School 2014 in Madrid. The notes give an introduction into the theory of $\ell$-adic sheaves with emphasis on their ramification theory on curves.
Deligne and Kato proved a formula computing the dimension of the nearby cycles complex of an l-adic sheaf on a relative curve over an excellent strictly henselian trait. In this article, we reprove this formula using Abbes-Saito's ramification theory.
We prove a Zariski-Nagata purity theorem for the motivic ramification filtration of a reciprocity sheaf. An important tool in the proof is a generalization of the Kato-Saito reciprocity map from geometric global class field theory to all reciprocity sheaves. As a corollary we obtain cut-by-curves and cut-by-surfaces criteria for various ramification filtrations. In some cases this reproves known theorems, in some cases we obtain new results.
We prove a purely local form of a result of Saito and Yatagawa. They proved that the characteristic cycle of a constructible étale sheaf is determined by wild ramification of the sheaf along the boundary of a compactification. But they had to consider ramification at all the points of the compactification. We give a pointwise result, that is, we prove that the characteristic cycle of a constructible étale sheaf around a point is determined by wild ramification at the point. The key ingredient is to prove that wild ramification of the stalk of the nearby cycle complex of a constructible étale s…
For a constructible étale sheaf on a smooth variety of positive characteristic ramified along an effective divisor, the largest slope in Abbes and Saito's ramification theory of the sheaf gives a divisor with rational coefficients called the conductor divisor. In this article, we prove decreasing properties of the conductor divisor after pull-backs. The main ingredient behind is the construction of étale sheaves with pure ramifications. As applications, we first prove a lower semi-continuity property for conductors of étale sheaves on relative curves in the equal characteristic case, which sup…
We prove the equality of two non-logarithmic ramification filtrations defined by Matsuda and Abbes-Saito for the abelianized absolute Galois group of a complete discrete valuation field in positive characteristic. We also compute the refined Swan conductor and the characteristic form of a character of the fundamental group of a smooth separated scheme over a perfect field of positive characteristic by using sheaves of Witt vectors.
We show that compatible systems of $\ell$-adic sheaves on a scheme of finite type over the ring of integers of a local field are compatible along the boundary up to stratification. This extends a theorem of Deligne on curves over a finite field. As an application, we deduce the equicharacteristic case of classical conjectures on $\ell$-independence for proper smooth varieties over complete discrete valuation fields. Moreover, we show that compatible systems have compatible ramification. We also prove an analogue for integrality along the boundary.
We calculate the local Fourier transformations for a class of $\bar{\mathbb Q}_\ell$-sheaves. In particular, we verify a conjecture of Laumon and Malgrange. As an application, we calculate the local monodromy of $\ell$-adic hypergeometric sheaves introduced by Katz. We also discuss the characteristic $p$ analogue of the Turrittin-Levelt Theorem for $D$-modules. The method used in this paper can be used to show a conjecture of Ramero which states that the Fourier transformation of an analytic sheaf with meromorphic ramification still has meromorphic ramification.
The refined Swan conductor is defined by K.\ Kato \cite{KK2}, and generalized by T.\ Saito \cite{wild}. In this part, we consider some smooth $l$-adic étale sheaves of rank $p$ such that we can be define the $rsw$ following T.\ Saito, on some smooth dense open subscheme $U$ of a smooth separated scheme X of finite type over a perfect fields $κ$ of characteristic $p>0$. We give an explicit expression of $rsw(\mathcal{F})$ in some situation. As a consequence, we show that it is integral.
Let X be a noetherian scheme defined over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic p, and G be a finite group, of order divisible by p, acting on X. We introduce a refinement of the equivariant K-theory of X to take into account the information related to modular representation theory. As an application, in the 1-dimensional case, we generalize a modular Riemann-Roch theorem given by S.Nakajima, extending the link between Galois modules and wild ramification.
We generalise Kahn, Miyazaki, Saito, Yamazaki's theory of modulus pairs to pairs $(X, D)$ consisting of a qcqs scheme $X$ equipped with an effective Cartier divisor $D$ representing a ramification bound. We develop theories of sheaves on such pairs for modulus versions of the Zariski, Nisnevich, étale, fppf, and qfh-topologies. We extend the Suslin-Voevodsky theory of correspondances to modulus pairs, under the assumption that the interior $U = X \setminus D$ is Noetherian. The resulting point of view highlights connections to (Raynaud-style) rigid geometry, and potentially provides a setting …
The Grothendieck-Ogg-Shafarevich formula calculates the l-adic Euler-Poincare number of an l-adic sheaf on a curve by an invariant produced by the wild ramification of the l-adic sheaf named Swan class. A. Abbes, K. Kato and T. Saito generalize this formula to any dimensional scheme. In this paper, assuming the strong resolution of singularities we prove a localized version of a formula proved by A. Abbes and T. Saito using the characteristic class of an l-adic sheaf. As an application, we prove a conductor formula in equal characteristic.
We define a motivic conductor for any presheaf with transfers $F$ using the categorical framework developed for the theory of motives with modulus by Kahn-Miyazaki-Saito-Yamazaki. If $F$ is a reciprocity sheaf this conductor yields an increasing and exhaustive filtration on $F(L)$, where $L$ is any henselian discrete valuation field of geometric type over the perfect ground field. We show if $F$ is a smooth group scheme, then the motivic conductor extends the Rosenlicht-Serre conductor; if $F$ assigns to $X$ the group of finite characters on the abelianized étale fundamental group of $X$, then…
We introduce the characteristic class of an l-adic etale sheaf using a cohomological pairing due to Verdier (SGA5). As a consequence of the Lefschetz-Verdier trace formula, its trace computes the Euler-Poincare characteristic of the sheaf. We compare the characteristic class to two other invariants arising from ramification theory. One is the Swan class of Kato-Saito (math.AG/0402010) and the other is the 0-cycle class defined by Kato for rank 1 sheaves.
We develop a new approach to construction of numerical invariants for ramified coverings of algebraic surfaces of prime characteristic. Let A be a two-dimensional regular local ring of prime characteristic p with algebraically closed residue field. Let L/K be a solvable finite Galois extension of its fraction field. Let C be a germ of a regular curve on the spectrum of A which is not a component of the ramification divisor R. Then L/K determines (up to conjugation) an extension of the function filed of C. This is an extension of discrete valuation fields with algebaically closed residue fields…
The aim of these notes is to generalize Laumon's construction [18] of automorphic sheaves corresponding to local systems on a smooth, projective curve $C$ to the case of local systems with indecomposable unipotent ramification at a finite set of points. To this end we need an extension of the notion of parabolic structure on vector bundles to coherent sheaves. Once we have defined this, a lot of arguments from the article "On the geometric Langlands conjecture" by Frenkel, Gaitsgory and Vilonen [10] carry over to our situation. We show that our sheaves descend to the moduli space of parabolic …
Laumon introduced the local Fourier transform for $\ell$-adic Galois representations of local fields, of equal characteristic $p$ different from $\ell$, as a powerful tool to study the Fourier-Deligne transform of $\ell$-adic sheaves over the affine line. In this article, we compute explicitly the local Fourier transform of monomial representations satisfying a certain ramification condition, and deduce Laumon's formula relating the epsilon factor to the determinant of the local Fourier transform under the same condition.
