Let G(d,n) denote the Grassmannian of d-planes in C^n and let T be the torus (C^*)^n/diag(C^*) which acts on G(d,n). Let x be a point of G(d,n) and let \bar{Tx} be the closure of the T-orbit through x. Then the class of the structure sheaf of \bar{Tx} in the K-theory of G(d,n) depends only on which Plücker coordinates of x are nonzero -- combinatorial data known as the matroid of x. In this paper, we will define a certain map of additive groups from the K-theory of G(d,n) to Z[t]. Letting g_x(t) denote the image of (-1)^{n-dim Tx} [ O_{\bar{Tx}}], g_x behaves nicely under the standard constructions of matroid theory. Specifically, g_{x_1 \oplus x_2}(t)=g_{x_1}(t) g_{x_2}(t), g_{x_1 +_2 x_2}(t)=g_{x_1}(t) g_{x_2}(t)/t, g_x(t) = g_{x^{\perp}}(t) and g_x is unaltered by series and parallel extensions. Furthermore, the coefficients of g_x are nonnegative. The existence of this map implies bounds on (essentially equivalently) the complexity of Kapranov's Lie complexes, Hacking, Keel and Tevelev's very stable pairs and the author's tropical linear spaces when they are realizable in characteristic zero. Namely, in characteristic zero, a Lie complex or the underlying d-1 dimensional scheme of a very stable pair can have at most (n-i-1)! / (d-i)!(n-d-i)!(i-1)! strata of dimensions n-i and d-i respectively and a tropical linear space realizable in characteristic zero can have at most this many i-dimensional bounded faces.
Matroids are ubiquitous in modern combinatorics. As discovered by Gelfand, Goresky, MacPherson and Serganova there is a beautiful connection between matroid theory and the geometry of Grassmannians: realizable matroids correspond to torus orbits in Grassmannians. Further, as observed by Fink and Speyer general matroids correspond to classes in the $K$-theory of Grassmannians. This yields in particular a geometric description of the Tutte polynomial. In this review we describe all these constructions in detail, and moreover we generalise some of them to polymatroids. More precisely, we study th…
A basis shape locus takes as input data a zero/nonzero pattern in an $n \times k$ matrix, which is equivalent to a presentation of a transversal matroid. The locus is defined as the set of points in the Grassmannian of $k$ planes in $\mathbb{R}^n$ which are the row space of a matrix with the prescribed zero/nonzero pattern. We show that this locus depends only on the transversal matroid, not on the specific presentation. When a transversal matroid is a positroid, the closure of its basis shape locus is the associated positroid variety. We give a sufficient, and conjecturally necessary, conditi…
In a recent paper Baker and Bowler introduced matroids over hyperfields, offering a common generalization of matroids, oriented matroids, and linear subspaces of based vector spaces. This paper introduces the notion of a topological hyperfield and explores the generalization of Grassmannians and realization spaces to this context, particularly in relating the (hyper)fields R and C to hyperfields arising in matroid theory and in tropical geometry.
Matroid varieties are the closures in the Grassmannian of sets of points defined by specifying which Plücker coordinates vanish and which don't. In general these varieties are very ill-behaved, but in many cases one can estimate their codimension by keeping careful track of the conditions imposed by the vanishing of each Plücker coordinates on the columns of the matrix representing a point of the Grassmannian. This paper presents a way to make this procedure precise, producing a number for each matroid variety called its expected codimension that can be computed combinatorially solely from the…
To every matroid, we associate a class in the K-theory of the Grassmannian. We study this class using the method of equivariant localization. In particular, we provide a geometric interpretation of the Tutte polynomial. We also extend results of the second author concerning the behavior of such classes under direct sum, series and parallel connection and two-sum; these results were previously only established for realizable matroids, and their earlier proofs were more difficult.
We study the problem of factorization for residues of generalized biadjoint scalar scattering amplitudes $m^{(k)}_n$, introduced by Cachazo, Early, Guevara and Mizera (CEGM), involving multi-dimensional residues which factorize generically into $k$-ary products of lower-point generalized biadjoint amplitudes of the same type $m^{(k)}_{n_1}\cdots m^{(k)}_{n_k}$, where $n_1+\cdots +n_k = n+k(k-1)$, noting that smaller numbers of factors arise as special cases. Such behavior is governed geometrically by regular matroid subdivisions of hypersimplices and cones in the positive tropical Grassmannian…
This article is a survey of matroid theory aimed at algebraic geometers. Matroids are combinatorial abstractions of linear subspaces and hyperplane arrangements. Not all matroids come from linear subspaces; those that do are said to be representable. Still, one may apply linear algebraic constructions to non-representable matroids. There are a number of different definitions of matroids, a phenomenon known as cryptomorphism. In this survey, we begin by reviewing the classical definitions of matroids, develop operations in matroid theory, summarize some results in representability, and construc…

We make progress towards characterizing the algebraic matroid of the determinantal variety defined by the minors of fixed size of a matrix of variables. Our main result is a novel family of base sets of the matroid, which characterizes the matroid in special cases. Our approach relies on the combinatorial notion of relaxed supports of linkage matching fields that we introduce, our interpretation of the problem of completing a matrix of bounded rank from a subset of its entries as a linear section problem on the Grassmannian, and a connection that we draw with a class of local coordinates on th…
Matroid varieties are the closures in the Grassmannian of sets of points defined by specifying which Plücker coordinates vanish and which don't --- the set of nonvanishing Plücker coordinates forms a well-studied object called a matroid. Many problems in enumerative geometry could be solved if there were an efficient way to compute the cohomology class of a matroid variety in an efficient way just from the combinatorial data contained in the matroid itself. Unfortunately, in full generality, this problem is known to be completely intractable. In this thesis, we explore two attempts to get a ha…
We use techniques from Gromov-Witten theory to construct new invariants of matroids taking value in the Chow groups of spaces of rational curves in the permutohedral toric variety. When the matroid is realizable by a complex hyperplane arrangement, our invariants coincide with virtual fundamental classes used to define the logarithmic Gromov-Witten theory of wonderful models of arrangement complements, for any logarithmic structure supported on the wonderful boundary. When the boundary is empty, this implies that the quantum cohomology ring of a hyperplane arrangement's wonderful model is a co…
The study of the moment map from the Grassmannian to the hypersimplex, and the relation between torus orbits and matroid polytopes, dates back to the foundational 1987 work of Gelfand-Goresky-MacPherson-Serganova. On the other hand, the amplituhedron is a very new object, defined by Arkani-Hamed-Trnka in connection with scattering amplitudes in $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory. In this paper we discover a striking duality between the moment map $μ:Gr^{\geq0}_{k+1,n}\toΔ_{k+1,n}$ from the positive Grassmannian $Gr^{\geq0}_{k+1,n}$ to the hypersimplex, and the amplituhedron map $\tilde{Z}…
Using localization methods on the moduli space of stable quasimaps to Grassmannian, we give explicit formulas of $J$-function and double $J$-function of stable quasimaps for complete intersection in Grassmannian.
We study the enumerative significance of the s-pointed genus zero Gromov-Witten invariant on a homogeneous space X. For that, we give an interpretation in terms of rational curves on X.
We show that (equivariant) K-theoretic 3-point Gromov-Witten invariants of genus zero on a Grassmann variety are equal to triple intersections computed in the ordinary (equivariant) K-theory of a two-step flag manifold, thus generalizing an earlier result of Buch, Kresch, and Tamvakis. In the process we show that the Gromov-Witten variety of curves passing through 3 general points is irreducible and rational. Our applications include Pieri and Giambelli formulas for the quantum K-theory ring of a Grassmannian, which determine the multiplication in this ring. Our formula for Gromov-Witten invar…
We express the beta invariant of a loopless matroid as tropical self-intersection number of the diagonal of its matroid fan (a "local" Poincaré-Hopf theorem). This provides another example of uncovering the "geometry" of matroids by expressing their invariants in terms of tropicalised geometric constructions. We also prove a global Poincaré-Hopf theorem and initiate the study of a more general tropical Lefschetz-Hopf trace formula by proving the two special cases of tropical curves and tropical tori.
In the example of complex grassmannians, we demonstrate various techniques available for computing genus-0 K-theoretic GW-invariants of flag manifolds and more general quiver varieties. In particular, we address explicit reconstruction of all such invariants using finite-difference operators, the role of the q-hypergeometric series arising in the context of quasimap compactifications of spaces of rational curves in such varieties, the theory of twisted GW-invariants including level structures, as well as the Jackson-type integrals playing the role of equivariant K-theoretic mirrors.
Motivated by Witten's work (arXiv:hep-th/9312104), we propose the Verlinde/Grassmannian correspondence which relates the GL Verlinde numbers to the K-theoretic quasimap invariants of the Grassmannian. We recover these two types of invariants by imposing different stability conditions on the gauged linear sigma model associated to the Grassmannian. We construct two families of stability conditions connecting the two theories and prove two wall-crossing results. We confirm the Verlinde/Grassmannian correspondence in the rank two case.
We develop the version of the $J$-invariant for hermitian forms over quadratic extensions in a similar way Alexander Vishik did it for quadratic forms. This discrete invariant contains informations about rationality of algebraic cycles on the maximal unitary grassmannian associated with a hermitan form over a quadratic extension. The computation of the canonical $2$-dimension of this grassmannian in terms of the $J$-invariant is provided, as well as a complete motivic decomposition.
We examine a class of Calabi-Yau varieties of the determinantal type in Grassmannians and clarify what kind of examples can be constructed explicitly. We also demonstrate how to compute their genus-0 Gromov-Witten invariants from the analysis of the Givental $I$-functions. By constructing $I$-functions from the supersymmetric localization formula for the two dimensional gauged linear sigma models, we describe an algorithm to evaluate the genus-0 A-model correlation functions appropriately. We also check that our results for the Gromov-Witten invariants are consistent with previous results for …
We categorify all the Reshetikhin-Turaev tangle invariants of type A. Our main tool is a categorification of the generalized Jones-Wenzl projectors (a.k.a. clasps) as infinite twists. Applying this to certain convolution product varieties on the affine Grassmannian we extend our earlier work with Kamnitzer from standard to arbitrary representations.
We give a simple explicit construction of the Grassmannian n-logarithm, which is a multivalued analytic function on the quotient of the Grassmannian of generic n-dimensional subspaces in 2n-dimensional coordinate complex vector space by the action of the 2n-dimensional coordinate torus. We study Tate iterated integrals, which are homotopy invariant integrals of 1-forms dlog(rational functions). We introduce the Hopf algebra of integrable symbols related to an algebraic variety, which controls the Tate iterated integrals We give a simple explicit formula for the Tate iterated integrals related …
