We present a much simplified proof of Dehn's theorem on the infinitesimal rigidity of convex polytopes. Our approach is based on the ideas of Trushkina and Schramm.
We prove that universal second-order rigidity implies universal prestress stability and that triangulated convex polytopes in three-space (with holes appropriately positioned) are prestress stable.
Any convex polytope whose combinatorial automorphism group has two orbits on the flags is isomorphic to one whose group of Euclidean symmetries has two orbits on the flags (equivalently, to one whose automorphism group and symmetry group coincide.) Hence, a combinatorially two-orbit convex polytope is isomorphic to one of a known finite list, all of which are 3-dimensional: the cuboctahedron, icosidodecahedron, rhombic dodecahedron, or rhombic triacontahedron. The same is true of combinatorially two-orbit normal face-to-face tilings by convex polytopes.
We describe the canonical correspondence between set of all finite metric spaces and set of special symmetric convex polytopes, and formulate the problem about classification of the metric spaces in terms of combinatorial structure of those polytopes.
We study finite groups that occur as combinatorial automorphism groups or geometric symmetry groups of convex polytopes. When $Γ$ is a subgroup of the combinatorial automorphism group of a convex $d$-polytope, $d\geq 3$, then there exists a convex $d$-polytope related to the original polytope with combinatorial automorphism group exactly $Γ$. When $Γ$ is a subgroup of the geometric symmetry group of a convex $d$-polytope, $d\geq 3$, then there exists a convex $d$-polytope related to the original polytope with both geometric symmetry group and combinatorial automorphism group exactly $Γ$. These…
The problem of finding a triangulation of a convex three-dimensional polytope with few tetrahedra is proved to be NP-hard. We discuss other related complexity results.
Cutting a polytope is a very natural way to produce new classes of interesting polytopes. Moreover, it has been very enlightening to explore which algebraic and combinatorial properties of the orignial polytope are hereditary to its subpolytopes obtained by a cut. In this work, we put our attention to all the seperating hyperplanes for some given polytope (integral and convex) and study the existence and classification of such hyperplanes. We prove the exitence of seperating hyperplanes for the order and chain polytopes for any finite posets that are not a single chain; prove there are no such…
We classify the convex polytopes whose symmetry groups have two orbits on the flags. These exist only in two or three dimensions, and the only ones whose combinatorial automorphism group is also two-orbit are the cuboctahedron, the icosidodecahedron, and their duals. The combinatorially regular two-orbit convex polytopes are certain 2n-gons for each n > 1. We also classify the face-to-face tilings of Euclidean space by convex polytopes whose symmetry groups have two flag orbits. There are finitely many families, tiling one, two, or three dimensions. The only such tilings which are also combina…
A dissection of a convex d-polytope is a partition of the polytope into d-simplices whose vertices are among the vertices of the polytope. Triangulations are dissections that have the additional property that the set of all its simplices forms a simplicial complex. The size of a dissection is the number of d-simplices it contains. This paper compares triangulations of maximal size with dissections of maximal size. We also exhibit lower and upper bounds for the size of dissections of a 3-polytope and analyze extremal size triangulations for specific non-simplicial polytopes: prisms, antiprisms,…
We construct, for any positive integer n, a family of n congruent convex polyhedra in R^3, such that every pair intersects in a common facet. Previously, the largest such family contained only eight polytopes. Our polyhedra are Voronoi regions of evenly distributed points on the helix (t, cos t, sin t). With a simple modification, we can ensure that each polyhedron in the family has a point, a line, and a plane of symmetry. We also generalize our construction to higher dimensions and introduce a new family of cyclic polytopes.
These lecture notes treat some current aspects of two closely interrelated topics from the theory of convex polytopes: the shapes of f-vectors, and extremal constructions. The first lecture treats 3-dimensional polytopes; it includes a complete proof of the Koebe--Andreev--Thurston theorem, using the variational principle by Bobenko & Springborn (2004). In Lecture 2 we look at f-vector shapes of very high-dimensional polytopes. The third lecture explains a surprisingly simple construction for 2-simple 2-simplicial 4-polytopes, which have symmetric f-vectors. Lecture 4 sketches the geometry of …
We prove that every finite group is the automorphism group of a finite abstract polytope isomorphic to a face-to-face tessellation of a sphere by topological copies of convex polytopes. We also show that this abstract polytope may be realized as a convex polytope.
We show by a direct construction that there are at least $\exp\{cV^{(d-1)/(d+1)}\}$ convex lattice polytopes in $\mathbb{R}^d$ of volume $V$ that are different in the sense that none of them can be carried to an other one by a lattice preserving affine transformation. This is achieved by considering the family $\mathcal{P}^d(r)$ (to be defined in the text) of convex lattice polytopes whose volumes are between $0$ and $r^d/d!$. Namely we prove that for $P \in \mathcal{P}^d(r)$, $d!\mathrm{vol\;} P$ takes all possible integer values between $cr^{d-1}$ and $r^d$ where $c>0$ is a constant dependin…
We show that the edge graph of a 6-dimensional polytope with 12 facets has diameter at most 6, thus verifying the d-step conjecture of Klee and Walkup in the case of d=6. This implies that for all pairs (d,n) with n-d \leq 6 the diameter of the edge graph of a d-polytope with n facets is bounded by 6, which proves the Hirsch conjecture for all n-d \leq 6. We show this result by showing this bound for a more general structure -- so-called matroid polytopes -- by reduction to a small number of satisfiability problems.
This note provides a simple proof for the equality between the normalized volume of a convex polytope with $m$ vertices and the mixed volume of $m$ simplices and thus shows the seemingly restrictive problem of computing mixed volume of simplices is still at least as hard as computing volumes of convex polytopes.
In this paper, we discuss f- and flag-vectors of 4-dimensional convex polytopes and cellular 3-spheres. We put forward two crucial parameters of fatness and complexity: Fatness F(P) := (f_1+f_2-20)/(f_0+f_3-10) is large if there are many more edges and 2-faces than there are vertices and facets, while complexity C(P) := (f_{03}-20)/(f_0+f_3-10) is large if every facet has many vertices, and every vertex is in many facets. Recent results suggest that these parameters might allow one to differentiate between the cones of f- or flag-vectors of -- connected Eulerian lattices of length 5 (combinato…
We characterise finite and infinitesimal rigidity for bar-joint frameworks in R^d with respect to polyhedral norms (i.e. norms with closed unit ball P a convex d-dimensional polytope). Infinitesimal and continuous rigidity are shown to be equivalent for finite frameworks in R^d which are well-positioned with respect to P. An edge-labelling determined by the facets of the unit ball and placement of the framework is used to characterise infinitesimal rigidity in R^d in terms of monochrome spanning trees. An analogue of Laman's theorem is obtained for all polyhedral norms on R^2.
This short note extends a recent result (Bonifas et al, On sub-determinants and the diameter of polyhedra, Discrete Computational Geometry, 52, 2014) of an upper bound of the diameter of a convex polytope defined by an integer matrix to a similar upper bound of the diameter of a convex polytope defined by a real matrix. It also shows, by an example, that the new bound may be better than the ones of Bonifas et al.
By using elementary yet interesting observations and refining techniques used in a recent work by Fei Xue et al., we present new upper bounds for covering functionals of convex polytopes in $\mathbb{R}^n$ with few vertices. In these estimations, no information other than the number of vertices of the convex polytope is used.
In this paper, we first prove the optimal lower bound for Alexandrov angle rigidity of torsion elliptic isometries on any complete CAT($κ$) space, which, when attained, leads to an embedded 2-flat in the tangent cone invariant under the induced action of the isometry. Next, we will prove similar result for action of symmetry groups of either a regular orthoplex, a regular hypercube, a regular dodecahedron or a regular icosahedron on a set of points in any complete CAT($κ$) space in a way corresponds to the set of vertices of the polytope, the angle made at the circumcenter by any pair of point…
In 1980, V.I. Arnold studied the classification problem for convex lattice polygons of given area. Since then this problem and its analogues have been studied by B'ar'any, Pach, Vershik, Liu, Zong and others. Upper bounds for the numbers of non-equivalent ddimensional convex lattice polytopes of given volume or cardinality have been achieved. In this paper, by introducing and studying the unimodular groups acting on convex lattice polytopes, we obtain lower bounds for the number of non-equivalent d-dimensional convex lattice polytopes of bounded volume or given cardinality, which are essential…
In this paper, we consider the normality or the integer decomposition property (IDP, for short) for Minkowski sums of integral convex polytopes. We discuss some properties on the toric rings associated with Minkowski sums of integral convex polytopes. We also study Minkowski sums of edge polytopes and give a sufficient condition for Minkowski sums of edge polytopes to have IDP.
There is a well known construction of weakly continuous valuations on convex compact polytopes in R^n. In this paper we investigate when a special case of this construction gives a valuation which extends by continuity in the Hausdorff metric to all convex compact subsets of R^n. It is shown that there is a necessary condition on the initial data for such an extension. In the case of R^3 more explicit results are obtained.
We survey the Hilbert geometry of convex polytopes. In particular we present two important characterisations of these geometries, the first one in terms of the volume growth of their metric balls, the second one as a bi-lipschitz class of the simplexe's geometry.
We establish estimates for the asymptotic best approximation of the Euclidean unit ball by polytopes under a notion of distance induced by the intrinsic volumes. We also introduce a notion of distance between convex bodies that is induced by the Wills functional, and apply it to derive asymptotically sharp bounds for approximating the ball in high dimensions. Remarkably, it turns out that there is a polytope which is almost optimal with respect to all intrinsic volumes simultaneously, up to absolute constants. Finally, we establish asymptotic formulas for the best approximation of smooth conve…
Giving a joint generalization of a result of Brazitikos, Chasapis and Hioni and results of Giannopoulos and Milman, we prove that roughly $\left\lceil \frac{d}{(1-\vartheta)^d}\ln\frac{1}{(1-\vartheta)^d} \right\rceil$ points chosen uniformly and independently from a centered convex body $K$ in ${\mathbb R}^d$ yield a polytope $P$ for which $\vartheta K\subseteq P\subseteq K$ holds with large probability. The proof is simple, and relies on a combinatorial tool, the $\varepsilon$-net theorem.
The random polytope $K_n$, defined as the convex hull of $n$ points chosen uniformly at random on the boundary of a smooth convex body, is considered. Proofs for lower and upper variance bounds, strong laws of large numbers and central limit theorems for the intrinsic volumes of $K_n$ are presented. A normal approximation bound from Stein's method and estimates for surface bodies are among the involved tools.
A classification of SL$(n)$ invariant valuations on the space of convex polytopes in $R^n$ without any continuity assumptions is established. A corresponding result is obtained on the space of convex polytopes in $R^n$ that contain the origin.
In this paper, we give an overview of some results concerning best and random approximation of convex bodies by polytopes. We explain how both are linked and see that random approximation is almost as good as best approximation.
We study translation invariant, real-valued valuations on the class of convex polytopes in Euclidean space and discuss which continuity properties are sufficient for an extension of such valuations to all convex bodies. For this purpose, we introduce flag support measures of convex bodies via a local Steiner formula and derive some of the properties of these measures.
The deviation of a general convex body with twice differentiable boundary and an arbitrarily positioned polytope with a given number of vertices is studied. The paper considers the case where the deviation is measured in terms of the surface areas of the involved sets, more precisely, by what is called the surface area deviation. The proof uses arguments and constructions from probability, convex and integral geometry. The bound is closely related to $p$-affine surface areas.
Let $m>1$ be an integer, $B_m$ the set of all unit vectors of $\Bbb R^m$ pointing in the direction of a nonzero integer vector of the cube $[-1, 1]^m$. Denote by $s_m$ the radius of the largest ball contained in the convex hull of $B_m$. We determine the exact value of $s_m$ and obtain the asymptotic equality $s_m\sim\frac{2}{\sqrt{\log m}}$.
We study approximations of smooth convex bodies by random ball-polytopes. We examine the following probability model: let $K\subset{\bf R}^d$ be a convex body such that $K$ slides freely in a ball of radius $R>0$ and has $C^2$ smooth boundary. Let $x_1,\ldots, x_n$ be i.i.d. uniform random points in $K$. For $r\geq R$, let $K^r_{(n)}$ denote the intersection of all radius $r$ closed balls that contain $x_1,\ldots, x_n$. Then $K^r_{(n)}$ is a (uniform) random ball-polytope (of radius $r$) in $K$. We study the asymptotic properties of the expectation of the number of facets of $K_{(n)}^r$ as $n\…
Let $P$ be a (non necessarily convex) embedded polyhedron in $\R^3$, with its vertices on an ellipsoid. Suppose that the interior of $P$ can be decomposed into convex polytopes without adding any vertex. Then $P$ is infinitesimally rigid. More generally, let $P$ be a polyhedron bounding a domain which is the union of polytopes $C_1, ..., C_n$ with disjoint interiors, whose vertices are the vertices of $P$. Suppose that there exists an ellipsoid which contains no vertex of $P$ but intersects all the edges of the $C_i$. Then $P$ is infinitesimally rigid. The proof is based on some geometric prop…
Suppose we choose $N$ points uniformly randomly from a convex body in $d$ dimensions. How large must $N$ be, asymptotically with respect to $d$, so that the convex hull of the points is nearly as large as the convex body itself? It was shown by Dyer-Füredi-McDiarmid that exponentially many samples suffice when the convex body is the hypercube, and by Pivovarov that the Euclidean ball demands roughly $d^{d/2}$ samples. We show that when the convex body is the simplex, exponentially many samples suffice; this then implies the same result for any convex simplicial polytope with at most exponentia…
Let $K$ be a convex body in $\mathbb{R}^n$ and $f : \partial K \rightarrow \mathbb{R}_+$ a continuous, strictly positive function with $\int\limits_{\partial K} f(x) d μ_{\partial K}(x) = 1$. We give an upper bound for the approximation of $K$ in the symmetric difference metric by an arbitrarily positioned polytope $P_f$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$ having a fixed number of vertices. This generalizes a result by Ludwig, Schütt and Werner $[36]$. The polytope $P_f$ is obtained by a random construction via a probability measure with density $f$. In our result, the dependence on the number of vertices is op…
Let $\mathcal{P}$ and $\mathcal{P}'$ be $3$-dimensional convex polytopes in $\mathbb{R}^3$ and $S \subseteq \mathbb{R}^3$ be a non-empty intersection of an open set with a sphere. As a consequence of a somewhat more general result it is proved that $\mathcal{P}$ and $\mathcal{P}'$ coincide up to translation and/or reflection in a point if $|\int_{\mathcal{P}} e^{-i\mathbf{s}\cdot\mathbf{x}} \,\mathbf{dx}| = |\int_{\mathcal{P}'} e^{-i\mathbf{s}\cdot\mathbf{x}} \,\mathbf{dx}|$ for all $\mathbf{s} \in S$. This can be applied to the field of crystallography regarding the question whether a nanopar…
We prove the theorem mentioned in the title, for ${\mathbb{R}}^n$, where $n \ge 3$. The case of the simplex was known previously. Also, the case $n=2$ was settled, but there the infimum was some well-defined function of the side lengths. We also consider the cases of spherical and hyperbolic $n$-spaces. There we give some necessary conditions for the existence of a convex polytope with given facet areas, and some partial results about sufficient conditions for the existence of (convex) tetrahedra.
Let $K$ be a convex body in $\mathbb{R}^d$ which slides freely in a ball. Let $K^{(n)}$ denote the intersection of $n$ closed half-spaces containing $K$ whose bounding hyperplanes are independent and identically distributed according to a certain prescribed probability distribution. We prove an asymptotic formula for the expectation of the difference of the volumes of $K^{(n)}$ and $K$, and an asymptotic upper bound on the variance of the volume of $K^{(n)}$. We achieve these results by first proving similar statements for weighted mean width approximations of convex bodies that admit a rollin…
The cross covariogram g_{K,L} of two convex sets K, L in R^n is the function which associates to each x in R^n the volume of the intersection of K with L+x. The problem of determining the sets from their covariogram is relevant in stochastic geometry, in probability and it is equivalent to a particular case of the phase retrieval problem in Fourier analysis. It is also relevant for the inverse problem of determining the atomic structure of a quasicrystal from its X-ray diffraction image. The two main results of this paper are that g_{K,K} determines three-dimensional convex polytopes K and tha…
We study three families of polyhedral cones whose sections are regular simplices, cubes, and crosspolytopes. We compute solid angles and conic intrinsic volumes of these cones. We show that several quantities appearing in stochastic geometry can be expressed through these conic intrinsic volumes. A list of such quantities includes internal and external solid angles of regular simplices and crosspolytopes, the probability that a (symmetric) Gaussian random polytope or the Gaussian zonotope contains a given point, the expected number of faces of the intersection of a regular polytope with a rand…
The complexity of Philip Wolfe's method for the minimum Euclidean-norm point problem over a convex polytope has remained unknown since he proposed the method in 1974. The method is important because it is used as a subroutine for one of the most practical algorithms for submodular function minimization. We present the first example that Wolfe's method takes exponential time. Additionally, we improve previous results to show that linear programming reduces in strongly-polynomial time to the minimum norm point problem over a simplex.
The paper is centered around a new proof of the infinitesimal rigidity of convex polyhedra. The proof is based on studying derivatives of the discrete Hilbert-Einstein functional on the space of "warped polyhedra" with a fixed metric on the boundary. This approach is in a sense dual to using derivatives of the volume in order to prove the Gauss infinitesimal rigidity of convex polyhedra, which deals with deformations that preserve face normals and face areas. In the spherical and in the hyperbolic-de Sitter space, there is a perfect duality between the Hilbert-Einstein functional and the volum…
A compact Fuchsian manifold with boundary is a hyperbolic 3-manifold homeomorphic to $S_g \times [0; 1]$ such that the boundary component $S_g \times \{ 0\}$ is geodesic. We prove that a compact Fuchsian manifold with convex boundary is uniquely determined by the induced path metric on $S_g \times \{1\}$. We do not put further restrictions on the boundary except convexity.
In this work we study a class of random convex sets that "interpolate" between polytopes and zonotopes. These sets arise from considering a $q^{th}$-moment ($q\geq 1$) of an average of order statistics of $1$-dimensional marginals of a sequence of $N\geq n$ independent random vectors in $\mathbb R^n$. We consider the random model of isotropic log-concave distributions as well as the uniform distribution on an $\ell_p^n$-sphere ($1\leq p < \infty$) with respect to the cone probability measure, and study the geometry of these sets in terms of the support function and mean width. We provide asymp…
