Suppose we choose $N$ points uniformly randomly from a convex body in $d$ dimensions. How large must $N$ be, asymptotically with respect to $d$, so that the convex hull of the points is nearly as large as the convex body itself? It was shown by Dyer-Füredi-McDiarmid that exponentially many samples suffice when the convex body is the hypercube, and by Pivovarov that the Euclidean ball demands roughly $d^{d/2}$ samples. We show that when the convex body is the simplex, exponentially many samples suffice; this then implies the same result for any convex simplicial polytope with at most exponentially many faces.
The intrinsic volumes of Gaussian polytopes are considered. A lower variance bound for these quantities is proved, showing that, under suitable normalization, the variances converge to strictly positive limits. The implications of this missing piece of the jigsaw in the theory of Gaussian polytopes are discussed.
Short and transparent proofs of central limit theorems for intrinsic volumes of random polytopes in smooth convex bodies are presented. They combine different tools such as estimates for floating bodies with Stein's method from probability theory.
We study the expected volume of random polytopes generated by taking the convex hull of independent identically distributed points from a given distribution. We show that for log-concave distributions supported on convex bodies, we need at least exponentially many (in dimension) samples for the expected volume to be significant and that super-exponentially many samples suffice for concave measures when their parameter of concavity is positive.
The beta polytope $P_{n,d}^β$ is the convex hull of $n$ i.i.d. random points distributed in the unit ball of $\mathbb{R}^d$ according to a density proportional to $(1-\lVert{x}\rVert^2)^β$ if $β>-1$ (in particular, $β=0$ corresponds to the uniform distribution in the ball), or uniformly on the unit sphere if $β=-1$. We show that the expected normalized volumes of high-dimensional beta polytopes exhibit a phase transition and we describe its shape. We derive analogous results for the intrinsic volumes of beta polytopes and, when $β=0$, their number of vertices.
We consider the moments of the volume of the symmetric convex hull of independent random points in an $n$-dimensional symmetric convex body. We calculate explicitly the second and fourth moments for $n$ points when the given body is $B_q^n$ (and all of the moments for the case $q = 2$), and derive from these the asymptotic behavior of the expected volume of a random simplex in those bodies.
Let $X_1,\ldots,X_n$ be a standard normal sample in $\mathbb R^d$. We compute exactly the expected volume of the Gaussian polytope $\mathrm{conv}[X_1,\ldots,X_n]$, the symmetric Gaussian polytope $\mathrm{conv}[\pm X_1,\ldots,\pm X_n]$, and the Gaussian zonotope $[0,X_1]+\ldots+[0,X_n]$ by exploiting their connection to the regular simplex, the regular crosspolytope, and the cube with the aid of Tsirelson's formula. The expected volumes of these random polytopes are given by essentially the same expressions as the intrinsic volumes and external angles of the regular polytopes. For all these qu…
Let $K$ be a convex body in $\mathbb{R}^d$ which slides freely in a ball. Let $K^{(n)}$ denote the intersection of $n$ closed half-spaces containing $K$ whose bounding hyperplanes are independent and identically distributed according to a certain prescribed probability distribution. We prove an asymptotic formula for the expectation of the difference of the volumes of $K^{(n)}$ and $K$, and an asymptotic upper bound on the variance of the volume of $K^{(n)}$. We achieve these results by first proving similar statements for weighted mean width approximations of convex bodies that admit a rollin…
In this work, we find an explicit expression for the volume of the trace nonnegative polytope via a generalization of the Irwin-Hall distribution. This volume is an upper bound for the volume of all projected, normalized realizable spectra. We provide ancillary results on realizable trace-zero spectra and pose several problems suitable for further inquiry.
Let $K$ be a $d$ dimensional convex body with a twice continuously differentiable boundary and everywhere positive Gauss-Kronecker curvature. Denote by $K_n$ the convex hull of $n$ points chosen randomly and independently from $K$ according to the uniform distribution. Matching lower and upper bounds are obtained for the orders of magnitude of the variances of the $s$-th intrinsic volumes $V_s(K_n)$ of $K_n$ for $s\in\{1, ..., d\}$. Furthermore, strong laws of large numbers are proved for the intrinsic volumes of $K_n$. The essential tools are the Economic Cap Covering Theorem of Bárány and La…
Choose n random, independent points in R^d according to a fixed distribution. The convex hull of these points is a random polytope. In some cases, central limit theorems have been proven for the components of f-vectors of random polytopes constructed in this and similar ways. In this paper, we provide numerical evidence that the components of the f-vectors of random polytopes generated according to five different distributions are approximately jointly Gaussian for large n.
Let $X_1,\ldots,X_N$, $N>n$, be independent random points in $\mathbb{R}^n$, distributed according to the so-called beta or beta-prime distribution, respectively. We establish threshold phenomena for the volume, intrinsic volumes, or more general measures of the convex hulls of these random point sets, as the space dimension $n$ tends to infinity. The dual setting of polytopes generated by random halfspaces is also investigated.
We describe a maximum entropy approach for computing volumes and counting integer points in polyhedra. To estimate the number of points from a particular set X in R^n in a polyhedron P in R^n, by solving a certain entropy maximization problem, we construct a probability distribution on the set X such that a) the probability mass function is constant on the intersection of P and X and b) the expectation of the distribution lies in P. This allows us to apply Central Limit Theorem type arguments to deduce computationally efficient approximations for the number of integer points, volumes, and the …
Asymptotic normality for the natural volume measure of random polytopes generated by random points distributed uniformly in a convex body in spherical or hyperbolic spaces is proved. Also the case of Hilbert geometries is treated and central limit theorems in Lutwak's dual Brunn--Minkowski theory are established. The results follow from a central limit theorem for weighted random polytopes in Euclidean spaces. In the background are Stein's method for normal approximation and geometric properties of weighted floating bodies.
We study three families of polyhedral cones whose sections are regular simplices, cubes, and crosspolytopes. We compute solid angles and conic intrinsic volumes of these cones. We show that several quantities appearing in stochastic geometry can be expressed through these conic intrinsic volumes. A list of such quantities includes internal and external solid angles of regular simplices and crosspolytopes, the probability that a (symmetric) Gaussian random polytope or the Gaussian zonotope contains a given point, the expected number of faces of the intersection of a regular polytope with a rand…
The random polytope $K_n$, defined as the convex hull of $n$ points chosen uniformly at random on the boundary of a smooth convex body, is considered. Proofs for lower and upper variance bounds, strong laws of large numbers and central limit theorems for the intrinsic volumes of $K_n$ are presented. A normal approximation bound from Stein's method and estimates for surface bodies are among the involved tools.
Let $K$ be a convex body in $\R^d$, let $j\in\{1, ..., d-1\}$, and let $\varrho$ be a positive and continuous probability density function with respect to the $(d-1)$-dimensional Hausdorff measure on the boundary $\partial K$ of $K$. Denote by $K_n$ the convex hull of $n$ points chosen randomly and independently from $\partial K$ according to the probability distribution determined by $\varrho$. For the case when $\partial K$ is a $C^2$ submanifold of $\R^d$ with everywhere positive Gauss curvature, M. Reitzner proved an asymptotic formula for the expectation of the difference of the $j$th int…
We study approximations of smooth convex bodies by random ball-polytopes. We examine the following probability model: let $K\subset{\bf R}^d$ be a convex body such that $K$ slides freely in a ball of radius $R>0$ and has $C^2$ smooth boundary. Let $x_1,\ldots, x_n$ be i.i.d. uniform random points in $K$. For $r\geq R$, let $K^r_{(n)}$ denote the intersection of all radius $r$ closed balls that contain $x_1,\ldots, x_n$. Then $K^r_{(n)}$ is a (uniform) random ball-polytope (of radius $r$) in $K$. We study the asymptotic properties of the expectation of the number of facets of $K_{(n)}^r$ as $n\…
For a given convex body K in $R^d$, a random polytope $K^{(n)}$ is defined (essentially) as the intersection of $n$ independent closed halfspaces containing $K$ and having an isotropic and (in a specified sense) uniform distribution. We prove upper and lower bounds, of optimal orders, for the difference of the mean widths of $K^{(n)}$ and K, as n tends to infinity. For a simplicial polytope P, a precise asymptotic formula for the difference of the mean widths of $P^{(n)}$ and P is obtained.
Let $X_1,\ldots,X_n$ be i.i.d.\ random points in the $d$-dimensional Euclidean space sampled according to one of the following probability densities: $$ f_{d,β} (x) = \text{const} \cdot (1-\|x\|^2)^β, \quad \|x\|\leq 1, \quad \text{(the beta case)} $$ and $$ \tilde f_{d,β} (x) = \text{const} \cdot (1+\|x\|^2)^{-β}, \quad x\in\mathbb{R}^d, \quad \text{(the beta' case).} $$ We compute exactly the expected intrinsic volumes and the expected number of facets of the convex hull of $X_1,\ldots,X_n$. Asymptotic formulae where obtained previously by Affentranger [The convex hull of random points with …
Consider the random polytope, that is given by the convex hull of a Poisson point process on a smooth convex body in $\mathbb{R}^d$. We prove central limit theorems for continuous motion invariant valuations including the Will's functional and the intrinsic volumes of this random polytope. Additionally we derive a central limit theorem for the oracle estimator, that is an unbiased an minimal variance estimator for the volume of a convex set. Finally we obtain a multivariate limit theorem for the intrinsic volumes and the components of the $\mathbf{f}$-vector of the random polytope.
We establish central limit theorems for natural volumes of random inscribed polytopes in projective Riemannian or Finsler geometries. In addition, normal approximation of dual volumes and the mean width of random polyhedral sets are obtained. We deduce these results by proving a general central limit theorem for the weighted volume of the convex hull of random points chosen from the boundary of a smooth convex body according to a positive and continuous density in Euclidean space. In the background are geometric estimates for weighted surface bodies and Berry-Esseen bounds for functionals of i…
An identity due to Efron dating from 1965 relates the expected volume of the convex hull of $n$ random points to the expected number of vertices of the convex hull of $n+1$ random points. Forty years later this identity was extended from expected values to higher moments. The generalized identity has attracted considerable interest. Whereas the left-hand side of the generalized identity -- concerning the volume -- has an immediate geometric interpretation, this is not the case for the right-hand side -- concerning the number of vertices. A transformation of the right-hand side applying an iden…
There are (at least) two reasons to study random polytopes. The first is to understand the combinatorics and geometry of random polytopes especially as compared to other classes of polytopes, and the second is to analyze average-case complexity for algorithms which take polytopal data as input. However, establishing results in either of these directions often requires quite technical methods. Here we seek to give an elementary introduction to random polytopes avoiding these technicalities. In particular we explore the general paradigm that polytopes obtained from the convex hull of random poin…
Stationary and isotropic iteration stable random tessellations are considered, which can be constructed by a random process of cell division. The collection of maximal polytopes at a fixed time $t$ within a convex window $W\subset{\Bbb R}^d$ is regarded and formulas for mean values, variances, as well as a characterization of certain covariance measures are proved. The focus is on the case $d\geq 3$, which is different from the planar one, treated separately in \cite{ST2}. Moreover, a multivariate limit theorem for the vector of suitably rescaled intrinsic volumes is established, leading in ea…
In this paper, we give an overview of some results concerning best and random approximation of convex bodies by polytopes. We explain how both are linked and see that random approximation is almost as good as best approximation.
The convex hull $P_{n}$ of a Gaussian sample $X_{1},...,X_{n}$ in $R^{d}$ is a Gaussian polytope. We prove that the expected number of facets $E f_{d-1} (P_n)$ is monotonically increasing in $n$. Furthermore we prove this for random polytopes generated by uniformly distributed points in a $d$-dimensional ball.
We prove some "high probability" results on the expected value of the mean width for random perturbations of random polytopes. The random perturbations are considered for Gaussian and $p$-stable random vectors, as well as uniform distributions on $\ell_p^N$-balls and the unit sphere.
The convex hull of several i.i.d. beta distributed random vectors in $\mathbb R^d$ is called the random beta polytope. Recently, the expected values of their intrinsic volumes, number of faces, normal and tangent angles and other quantities have been calculated, explicitly and asymptotically. In this paper, we aim to investigate the asymptotic behavior of the beta polytopes with extremal intrinsic volumes. We suggest a conjecture and solve it in dimension 2. To this end, we obtain some general limit relation for a wide class of $U$-$\max$ statistics whose kernels include the perimeter and the …
The convex hull of N independent random points chosen on the boundary of a simple polytope in R^n is investigated. Asymptotic formulas for the expected number of vertices and facets, and for the expectation of the volume difference are derived. This is one of the first investigations leading to rigorous results for random polytopes which are neither simple nor simplicial. The results contrast existing results when points are chosen in the interior of a convex set.
We provide a streamlined proof and improved estimates for the weak multivariate Gnedenko law of large numbers on concentration of random polytopes within the space of convex bodies (in a fixed or a high dimensional setting), as well as a corresponding strong law of large numbers.
Let $K$ be a smooth convex set with volume one in $\BBR^d$. Choose $n$ random points in $K$ independently according to the uniform distribution. The convex hull of these points, denoted by $K_n$, is called a {\it random polytope}. We prove that several key functionals of $K_n$ satisfy the central limit theorem as $n$ tends to infinity.
A conjecture of Mihail and Vazirani states that the edge expansion of the graph of every $0/1$ polytope is at least one. Any lower bound on the edge expansion gives an upper bound for the mixing time of a random walk on the graph of the polytope. Such random walks are important because they can be used to generate an element from a set of combinatorial objects uniformly at random. A weaker form of the conjecture of Mihail and Vazirani says that the edge expansion of the graph of a $0/1$ polytope in $\mathbb{R}^d$ is greater than 1 over some polynomial function of $d$. This weaker version of th…
We study integer programming instances over polytopes P(A,b)={x:Ax<=b} where the constraint matrix A is random, i.e., its entries are i.i.d. Gaussian or, more generally, its rows are i.i.d. from a spherically symmetric distribution. The radius of the largest inscribed ball is closely related to the existence of integer points in the polytope. We show that for m=2^O(sqrt{n}), there exist constants c_0 < c_1 such that with high probability, random polytopes are integer feasible if the radius of the largest ball contained in the polytope is at least c_1sqrt{log(m/n)}; and integer infeasible if th…
We study the geometry of centrally-symmetric random polytopes, generated by $N$ independent copies of a random vector $X$ taking values in $\mathbb{R}^n$. We show that under minimal assumptions on $X$, for $N \gtrsim n$ and with high probability, the polytope contains a deterministic set that is naturally associated with the random vector---namely, the polar of a certain floating body. This solves the long-standing question on whether such a random polytope contains a canonical body. Moreover, by identifying the floating bodies associated with various random vectors we recover the estimates th…
Frank-Wolfe methods are popular for optimization over a polytope. One of the reasons is because they do not need projection onto the polytope but only linear optimization over it. To understand its complexity, Lacoste-Julien and Jaggi introduced a condition number for polytopes and showed linear convergence for several variations of the method. The actual running time can still be exponential in the worst case (when the condition number is exponential). We study the smoothed complexity of the condition number, namely the condition number of small random perturbations of the input polytope and …
