Let $F=(f_1,...,f_q)$ be a polynomial dominating map from $\mathbb{C}^n$ to $\mathbb{C}^q$. We study the quotient ${\cal{T}}^1(F)$ of polynomial 1-forms that are exact along the fibres of $F$, by 1-forms of type $dR+\sum a_idf_i$, where $R,a_1,...,a_q$ are polynomials. We prove that ${\cal{T}}^1(F)$ is always a torsion $\mathbb{C}[t_1,...,t_q]$-module. The we determine under which conditions on $F$ we have ${\cal{T}}^1(F)=0$. As an application, we study the behaviour of a class of algebraic $(\mathbb{C}^p,+)$-actions on $\mathbb{C}^n$, and determine in particular when these actions are trivial.
We utilize the same technique as in [arXiv:2205.04254 (2022)] to provide some representations of polynomials non-negative on a basic semi-algebraic set, defined by polynomial inequalities, under more general conditions. Based on each representation, we obtain semidefinite programs which return a sequence of values that finitely converges to the optimal value of a given polynomial optimization problem under generic assumption. Consequently, we can compute exactly the minimal value of any polynomial over a basic convex semi-algebraic set which is defined by the inequalities of concave polynomial…
The purpose of this paper is twofold. First, we use the motivic Landweber exact functor theorem to deduce that the Bott inverted infinite projective space is homotopy algebraic $K$-theory. The argument is considerably shorther than any other known proofs and serves well as an illustration of the effectiveness of Landweber exactness. Second, we dispense with the regularity assumption on the base scheme which is often implicitly required in the notion of oriented motivic ring spectra. The latter allows us to verify the motivic Landweber exact functor theorem and the universal property of the alg…
We prove the exactness of a descent sequence relating the algebraic cobordism groups of a scheme and its envelopes. Analogous sequences for Chow groups and K-theory were previously proved by Gillet.
We observe that the oriented homeomorphism type of a simply- connected smooth projective surface is determined by its algebraic structure modulo an odd prime of good reduction.
We construct an infinitesimal invariant for cycles in a family with cohomology class in the total space lying in a given level of the Leray filtration. This infinitesimal invariant detects cycles modulo algebraic equivalence in the fibers. We apply this construction to the Ikeda family, which gives optimal results for the Beauville decomposition of the 1-cycle of a very general plane curve in its Jacobian.
The paper proves that if a reductive group scheme acts properly on a scheme then the geometric quotient exists as an algebraic space. As a consequence we obtain the existence of the moduli spcace of canonically polarized varieties over Spec Z.
Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic. For any integer $m \geq 2$, we show that the Hodge numbers of a smooth projective $k$-variety can take on any combination of values modulo $m$, subject only to Serre duality. In particular, there are no non-trivial polynomial relations between the Hodge numbers.
Based on the algebraic cobordism theory of Levine and Morel, we develop a theory of algebraic cobordism modulo algebraic equivalence. We prove that this theory can reproduce Chow groups modulo algebraic equivalence and the semi-topological $K_0$-groups. We also show that with finite coefficients, this theory agrees with the algebraic cobordism theory. We compute our cobordism theory for some low dimensional varieties. The results on infinite generation of some Griffiths groups by Clemens and on smash-nilpotence by Voevodsky and Voisin are also lifted and reinterpreted in terms of this cobordis…
We study the Brauer-Manin obstruction to the Hasse principle and to weak approximation for 0-cycles on algebraic varieties that possess a fibration structure. The exactness of the local-to-global sequence $(E)$ of Chow groups of 0-cycles was known only for a fibration whose base is either a curve or the projective space. In the present paper, we prove the exactness of $(E)$ for fibrations whose bases are Châtelet surfaces or projective models of homogeneous spaces of connected linear algebraic groups with connected stabilizers. We require that either all fibres are split and most fibres satisf…
Let $X$ be an algebraic scheme over an algebraically closed field and $\ell$ a prime number invertible on $X$. According to classical results (due essentially to A. Grothendieck, M. Artin and P. Deligne), the étale cohomology groups $\mathrm{H}^i(X,\mathbb{Z}/\ell\mathbb{Z})$ are finite-dimensional. Using an $\ell$-adic variant of M. Artin's good neighborhoods and elementary results on the cohomology of pro-$\ell$ groups, we express the cohomology of $X$ as a well controlled colimit of that of toposes constructed on $BG$ where the $G$ are computable finite $\ell$-groups. From this, we deduce t…
Using the functoriality of C. McCrory and A. Parusiński's weight complex -which induces an analog of the weight filtration for complex algebraic varieties on the Borel-Moore homology with $\mathbb{Z}_2$ coefficients of real algebraic varieties-, we define a weight complex with action on the real algebraic varieties equipped with a finite group action. Emphasizing on the two elements group, we then establish a filtered version of Smith short sequence, taking into account the Nash-constructible filtration which realizes the weight complex with action. Its exactness is implied by the splitting of…
In this article we prove a result comparing rationality of integral algebraic cycles over the function field of a quadric and over the base field. This is an integral version of the result known for coefficients modulo 2. Those results have already been proved by Alexander Vishik in the case of characteristic 0, which allowed him to work with algebraic cobordism theory. Our proofs use the modulo 2 Steenrod operations in the Chow theory and work in any characteristic different from 2.
Let $E$ be a fiber $F$ bundle over a base $B$ such that $E, F$ and $B$ are smooth compact complex algebraic varieties. In this paper we give explicit formulae for the difference of the Hirzebruch $χ_y$-genus $χ_y(E) - χ_y(F)χ_y(B)$. As a byproduct of the formulae we obtain that the signature of such a fiber bundle is multiplicative mod $4$, i.e. the signature difference $σ(E) -σ(F)σ(B)$ is always divisible by $4$. In the case of $\operatorname{dim}_{\mathbb C}E \leqq 4$ the $χ_y$-genus difference $χ_y(E) - χ_y(F)χ_y(B)$ can be concretely described only in terms of the signature difference $σ(E…
This paper studies the representations of a non-negative polynomial $f$ on a non-compact semi-algebraic set $K$ modulo its critical ideal. Under the assumptions that the semi-algebraic set $K$ is regular and $f$ satisfies the boundary Hessian conditions (BHC) at each zero of $f$ in $K$, we show that $f$ can be represented as a sum of squares (SOS) of real polynomials modulo its critical ideal if $f\ge 0$ on $K$. In particular, we focus on the polynomial ring $\mathbb R[x]$.
We present relations between cycles with rational coefficients modulo algebraic equivalence on the Jacobian of a curve. These relations depend on the linear systems the curve admits. They are obtained in the tautological ring, the smallest subspace containing (an embedding of) the curve and closed under the basic operations of intersection, Pontryagin product and the pullback and pushdown induced by homotheties.
We define and study the notion of numerical equivalence on algebraic cobordism cycles. We prove that algebraic cobordism modulo numerical equivalence is a finitely generated module over the Lazard ring, and it reproduces the Chow group modulo numerical equivalence. We show this theory defines an oriented Borel-Moore homology theory on schemes and oriented cohomology theory on smooth varieties. We compare it with homological equivalence and smash-equivalence for cobordism cycles. For the former, we show that homological equivalence on algebraic cobordism is strictly finer than numerical equival…
For positive integers $K$ and $L$, we introduce and study the notion of $K$-multiplicative dependence over the algebraic closure $\overline{\mathbb{F}}_p$ of a finite prime field $\mathbb{F}_p$, as well as $L$-linear dependence of points on elliptic curves in reduction modulo primes. One of our main results shows that, given non-zero rational functions $φ_1,\ldots,φ_m, \varrho_1,\ldots,\varrho_n\in\mathbb{Q}(X)$ and an elliptic curve $E$ defined over the integers $\mathbb{Z}$, for any sufficiently large prime $p$, for all but finitely many $α\in\overline{\mathbb{F}}_p$, at most one of the foll…
We show that the cycle map on a variety X, from algebraic cycles modulo algebraic equivalence to integer cohomology, lifts canonically to a topologically defined quotient of the complex cobordism ring of X. This more refined cycle map gives a topological proof that the Griffiths group is nonzero for some varieties X, without any use of Hodge theory. We also use this more refined cycle map to give examples of torsion algebraic cycles which map to 0 in Deligne cohomology but are not algebraically equivalent to 0, thus answering some questions by Colliot-Thelene and Schoen.
We show that algebraic equivalence of images of stable maps of curves lifts to deformation equivalence of the stable maps. The main applications concern $A_1(X)$, the group of 1-cycles modulo algebraic equivalence, for smooth, separably rationally connected varieties. If $K/k$ is an algebraic extension, then the kernel of $A_1(X_k)\to A_1(X_K)$ is at most ${\mathbb Z}/2{\mathbb Z}$. If $k$ is finite, then the image equals the subgroup of Galois invariant cycles. This paper replaces Sections~2--3 of 2211.15915.v.1 and Sections~2--3 of 2211.15911.v.1. The other Sections are retained in the revis…
Let $X$ be a projective algebraic manifold and let $CH^r(X)$ be the Chow group of algebraic cycles of codimension $r$ on $X$, modulo rational equivalence. Working with a candidate Bloch-Beilinson filtration $\{F^ν\}_{ν\geq 0}$ on $CH^r(X)\otimes {\Bbb Q}$ due to the second author, we construct a space of arithmetic Hodge theoretic invariants $\nabla J^{r,ν}(X)$ and corresponding map $ϕ_{X}^{r,ν} : Gr_{F}^νCH^r(X)\otimes {\Bbb Q} \to \nabla J^{r,ν}(X)$, and determine conditions on $X$ for which the kernel and image of $ϕ_{X}^{r,ν}$ are ``uncountably large''.
Let J be the Jacobian of a smooth curve C of genus g, and let A(J) be the ring of algebraic cycles modulo algebraic equivalence on J, tensored with Q. We study in this paper the smallest Q-vector subspace R of A(J) which contains C and is stable under the natural operations of A(J) : intersection and Pontryagin products, pull back and push down under multiplication by integers. We prove that this "tautological subring" is generated (over Q) by the classes of the subvarieties W_1=C, W_2=C+C, ..., W_{g-1}. If C admits a morphism of degree d onto P^1, we prove that the last d-1 classes suffice.
We define a cobordism theory in algebraic geometry based on normal crossing degenerations with double point singularities. The main result is the equivalence of double point cobordism to the theory of algebraic cobordism previously defined by Levine and Morel. Double point cobordism provides a simple, geometric presentation of algebraic cobordism theory. As a corollary, the Lazard ring given by products of projective spaces rationally generates all nonsingular projective varieties modulo double point degenerations. Double point degenerations arise naturally in relative Donaldson-Thomas theory.…
In these notes, we consider self-maps of degree > 1 on a weak del Pezzo surface X of degree < 8. We show that there are exactly 12 such X, modulo isomorphism. In particular, K_X^2 > 2, and if X has one self-map of degree > 1 then for every positive integer d there is a self-map of degree d^2 on X. We prove the Sato conjecture in the present case, the general case of which has been proved by N. Nakayama.
Let C be a complex curve of genus g, let J(C) be its Jacobian and let R(C) be its tautological ring, that is, the group of algebraic cycles modulo algebraic equivalence. We study the algebraic structure of R(C). In particular, we give a detailed description of all the possibilities that may occur for g<9: we construct convenient basis and we determine the matrices representing the Fourier transform and both intersection and Pontryagin products explicitly. In particular, we estimate the dimension of R(C).
Let A be a finite dimensional algebra over an algebraically closed field K. The derived Picard group DPic(A) is the group of two-sided tilting complexes over A modulo isomorphism. We prove that DPic(A) is a locally algebraic group, and its identity component is Out^0(A). If B is a derived Morita equivalent algebra then DPic(A) is isomorphic to DPic(B) as locally algebraic groups. Our results extend, and our based on, work of Huisgen-Zimmermann, Saorin and Rouquier.
In this paper, we study the problem of computing by relaxation hierarchies the infimum of a real polynomial function f on a closed basic semialgebraic set and the points where this infimum is reached, if they exist. We show that when the infimum is reached, a relaxation hierarchy constructed from the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker ideal is always exact and that the vanishing ideal of the KKT minimizer points is generated by the kernel of the associated moment matrix in that degree, even if this ideal is not zero-dimensional. We also show that this relaxation allows to detect when there is no KKT minimizer…
We investigate some relations between the duality and the topological filtration in algebraic K-theory. As a result, we obtain a construction of the first Steenrod square for Chow groups modulo two of varieties over a field of arbitrary characteristic. This improves previously obtained results, in the sense that it is not anymore needed to mod out the image modulo two of torsion integral cycles. Along the way we construct a lifting of the first Steenrod square to algebraic connective K-theory with integral coefficients, and homological Adams operations in this theory. Finally we provide some a…
We confirm a conjecture of Guth concerning the maximal number of $δ$-tubes, with $δ$-separated directions, contained in the $δ$-neighborhood of a real algebraic variety. Modulo a factor of $δ^{-\varepsilon}$, we also prove Guth and Zahl's generalized version for semialgebraic sets. Although the applications are to be found in harmonic analysis, the proof will employ deep results from algebraic and differential geometry, including Tarski's projection theorem and Gromov's algebraic lemma.
