Variations of Hodge structures for hypergeometric differential operators and parabolic Higgs bundles

Consider the holomorphic bundle with connection on $\mathbb P^1-\{0,1,\infty\}$ corresponding to the regular hypergeometric differential operator \[ \prod_{j=1}^h(D-α_j)-z\prod_{j=1}^h(D-β_j), \qquad D=z\frac{d}{dz}. \] If the numbers $α_i$ and $β_j$ are real and for all $i$ and $j$ the number $α_i-β_j$ is not integer, then the bundle with connection is known to underlie a complex polarizable variation of Hodge structures. On the Locus of Hodge Classes

Let $f: X \rightarrow S$ be a family of non singular projective varieties parametrized by a complex algebraic variety $S$. Fix $s \in S$, an integer $p$, and a class $h \in {\rm H}^{2p}(X_s,\Z)$ of Hodge type $(p,p)$. We show that the locus, on $S$, where $h$ remains of type $(p,p)$ is algebraic. This result, which in the geometric case would follow from the rational Hodge conjecture, is obtained in the setting of variations of Hodge structures.

Hodge metrics and positivity of direct images

Building on Fujita-Griffiths method of computing metrics on Hodge bundles, we show that the direct image of an adjoint semi-ample line bundle by a projective submersion has a continuous metric with Griffiths semi-positive curvature. This shows that for every holomorphic semi-ample vector bundle $E$ on a complex manifold, and every positive integer $k$, the vector bundle $S^kE\otimes\det E$ has a continuous metric with Griffiths semi-positive curvature. If $E$ is ample on a projective manifold, the metric can be made smooth and Griffiths positive.
