The partially asymmetric exclusion process (PASEP) is an important model from statistical mechanics which describes a system of interacting particles hopping left and right on a one-dimensional lattice of $n$ sites. It is partially asymmetric in the sense that the probability of hopping left is $q$ times the probability of hopping right. Additionally, particles may enter from the left with probability $α$ and exit from the right with probability $β$.
In this paper we prove a close connection between the PASEP and the combinatorics of permutation tableaux. (These tableaux come indirectly from the totally nonnegative part of the Grassmannian, via work of Postnikov, and were studied in a paper of Steingrimsson and the second author.) Namely, we prove that in the long time limit, the probability that the PASEP is in a particular configuration $τ$ is essentially the generating function for permutation tableaux of shape $λ(τ)$ enumerated according to three statistics. The proof of this result uses a result of Derrida, Evans, Hakim, and Pasquier on the {\it matrix ansatz} for the PASEP model.
As an application, we prove some monotonicity results for the PASEP. We also derive some enumerative consequences for permutations enumerated according to various statistics such as weak excedence set, descent set, crossings, and occurences of generalized patterns.
We give another bijective proof of a result of Corteel and Nadeau. We find a generating function related to unrestricted columns of permutation tableaux. As a consequence, we obtain a sign-imbalance formula for permutation tableaux. We extend the first bijection of Corteel and Nadeau between permutations and permutation tableaux to type $B$ objects. Using this type $B$ bijection, we generalize a result of Lam and Williams. We prove that the bijection of Corteel and Nadeau and our type $B$ bijection can be expressed as zigzag maps on the alternative representation.
This paper presents a combinatorial study of the super plactic monoid of type A, which is related to the representations of the general linear Lie superalgebra. We introduce the analogue of the Schützenberger's jeu de taquin on the structure of super tableaux over a signed alphabet. We show that this procedure which transforms super skew tableaux into super Young tableaux is compatible with the super plactic congruence and it is confluent. We deduce properties relating the super jeu de taquin to insertion algorithms on super tableaux. Moreover, we introduce the super evacuation procedure as an…
We introduce a family of tableaux that simultaneously generalizes the tableaux used to characterize Grothendieck polynomials and k-Schur functions. We prove that the polynomials drawn from these tableaux are the affine Grothendieck polynomials and k-K-Schur functions -- Schubert representatives for the K-theory of affine Grassmannians and their dual in the nil Hecke ring. We prove a number of combinatorial properties including Pieri rules.
The purpose of this paper is twofold. First we answer to a question asked by Steingrimsson and Williams about certain permutation tableaux: we construct a bijection between binary trees and the so-called Catalan tableaux. These tableaux are certain Ferrers (or Young) diagrams filled with some 0's and 1's, satisfying a certain hook condition, and are enumerated by the Catalan numbers. They form a subclass of the permutation tableaux, enumerated by n!, introduced by Postnikov in his study of totally non negative Grassmannians and networks. Secondly we relate this new Catalan bijection with the t…
This paper makes a combinatorial study of the two monoids and the two types of tableaux that arise from the two possible generalizations of the Patience Sorting algorithm from permutations (or standard words) to words. For both types of tableaux, we present Robinson--Schensted--Knuth-type correspondences (that is, bijective correspondences between word arrays and certain pairs of semistandard tableaux of the same shape), generalizing two known correspondences: a bijective correspondence between standard words and certain pairs of standard tableaux, and an injective correspondence between words…
We study the combinatorics of Gröbner degenerations of Grassmannians and the Schubert varieties inside them. We provide a family of binomial ideals whose combinatorics is governed by tableaux induced by matching fields in the sense of Sturmfels and Zelevinsky. We prove that these ideals are all quadratically generated and they yield a SAGBI basis of the Plücker algebra. This leads to a new family of toric degenerations of Grassmannians. Moreover, we apply our results to construct a family of Gröbner degenerations of Schubert varieties inside Grassmannians. We provide a complete characterizatio…
A tableau inversion is a pair of entries in row-standard tableau $T$ that lie in the same column of $T$ yet lack the appropriate relative ordering to make $T$ column-standard. An $i$-inverted Young tableau is a row-standard tableau along with a precisely $i$ inversion pairs. Tableau inversions were originally introduced by Fresse to calculate the Betti numbers of Springer fibers in Type A, with the number of $i$-inverted tableaux that standardize to a fixed standard Young tableau corresponding to a specific Betti number of the associated fiber. In this paper we approach the topic of tableau in…
We study a two-species PASEP, in which there are two types of particles, "heavy" and "light," hopping right and left on a one-dimensional lattice of $n$ cells with open boundaries. In this process, only the "heavy" particles can enter on the left of the lattice and exit from the right of the lattice. In the bulk, any transition where a heavier particle type swaps places with an adjacent lighter particle type is possible. We generalize combinatorial results of Corteel and Williams for the ordinary PASEP by defining a combinatorial object which we call a rhombic alternative tableau that gives a …
The asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) is a model for translation in protein synthesis and traffic flow; it can be defined as a Markov chain describing particles hopping on a one-dimensional lattice. In this article I give an overview of some of the connections of the stationary distribution of the ASEP to combinatorics (tableaux and multiline queues) and special functions (Askey-Wilson polynomials, Macdonald polynomials, and Schubert polynomials). I also make some general observations about positivity in Markov chains.
Permutation tableaux are combinatorial objects related with permutations and various statistics on them. They appeared in connection with total positivity in Grassmannians, and stationary probabilities in a PASEP model. In particular they gave rise to an interesting q-analog of Eulerian numbers. The purpose of this article is to study some combinatorial properties of type B permutation tableaux, defined by Lam and Williams, and links with signed permutation statistics. We show that many of the tools used for permutation tableaux generalize in this case, including: the Matrix Ansatz (a method o…
Starting from the two-species partially asymmetric simple exclusion process, we study a subclass of signed permutations, the partially signed permutations, using the combinatorics of Laguerre histories. From this physical and bijective point of view, we obtain a natural descent statistic on partially signed permutations; as well as partially signed permutations patterns.
Type-B permutation tableaux are combinatorial objects introduced by Lam and Williams that have an interesting connection with the partially asymmetric simple exclusion process (PASEP). In this paper, we compute the expected value of several statistics on these tableaux. Some of these computations are motivated by a similar paper on permutation tableaux. Others are motivated by the PASEP. In particular, we compute the expected number of rows, unrestricted rows, diagonal ones, adjacent south steps, and adjacent west steps.
Introduced in the late 1960's, the asymmetric exclusion process (ASEP) is an important model from statistical mechanics which describes a system of interacting particles hopping left and right on a one-dimensional lattice of n sites with open boundaries. It has been cited as a model for traffic flow and protein synthesis. In the most general form of the ASEP with open boundaries, particles may enter and exit at the left with probabilities alpha and gamma, and they may exit and enter at the right with probabilities beta and delta. In the bulk, the probability of hopping left is q times the prob…
The Quantum Symmetric Simple Exclusion Process (QSSEP) is a model of quantum particles hopping on a finite interval and satisfying the exclusion principle. Recently Bernard and Jin have studied the fluctuations of the invariant measure for this process, when the number of sites goes to infinity. These fluctuations are encoded into polynomials, for which they have given equations and proved that these equations determine the polynomials completely. In this paper, I give an explicit combinatorial formula for these polynomials, in terms of Schröder trees. I also show that, quite surprisingly, the…
In previous work, the first and third authors introduced staircase tableaux, which they used to give combinatorial formulas for the stationary distribution of the asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) and for the moments of the Askey-Wilson weight function. The fact that the ASEP and Askey-Wilson moments are related at all is quite surprising, and is due to Uchiyama-Sasamoto-Wadati. The ASEP is a model of particles hopping on a one-dimensional lattice of N sites with open boundaries, particles can enter and exit at both left and right borders. It was introduced around 1970 and is cited as…
We study two versions of the asymmetric exclusion process (ASEP) -- an ASEP on a semi-infinite lattice with an open left boundary, and an ASEP on a finite lattice with open left and right boundaries -- and we demonstrate a surprising relationship between their stationary measures. The semi-infinite ASEP was first studied by Liggett and then Grosskinsky, while the finite ASEP had been introduced earlier by Spitzer and Macdonald-Gibbs-Pipkin. We show that the finite correlation functions involving the first L sites for the stationary measures on the semi-infinite ASEP can be obtained as a nonphy…
The asymmetric simple exclusion exclusion process (ASEP) is a model of particles hopping on a one-dimensional lattice of n sites. It was introduced around 1970, and since then has been extensively studied by researchers in statistical mechanics, probability, and combinatorics. Recently the ASEP on a lattice with open boundaries has been linked to Koornwinder polynomials, and the ASEP on a ring has been linked to Macdonald polynomials. In this article we study the two-species asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) on a ring, in which two kinds of particles ("heavy" and "light"), as well as …
We recently generalised the lattice permutation condition for Young tableaux to Kronecker tableaux and hence calculated a large new class of stable Kronecker coefficients labelled by co-Pieri triples. In this extended abstract we discuss important families of co-Pieri triples for which our combinatorics simplifies drastically.
In combinatorics there is a well-known duality between non-nesting and non-crossing objects. In algebra there are many objects which are standard, for example Standard Young Tableaux, Standard Monomials, Standard Bitableaux. We adopt a point of view that these standard objects are really non-nesting, and we find their non-crossing counterparts.
We use Kashiwara-Nakashima's combinatorics of crystal graphs associated to the roots sytems $B_{n}$ and $D_{n}$ to extend the results of \QCITE{cite}{}{lec3} and \QCITE{cite}{}{Mor} by showing that Morris type recurrence formulas also exist for the orthogonal root systems. We derive from these formulas a statistic on Kashiwara-Nakashima's tableaux of types $B_{n},C_{n}$ and $D_{n}$ generalizing Lascoux-Sch\UNICODE{0xfc}tzenberger's charge and from which it is possible to compute the Kostka-Foulkes polynomials $K_{λ,μ}(q)$ with restrictive conditions on $(λ,μ)$ . This statistic is different fro…
In this paper, we study tree--like tableaux, combinatorial objects which exhibit a natural tree structure and are connected to the partially asymmetric simple exclusion process (PASEP). There was a conjecture made on the total number of corners in tree--like tableaux and the total number of corners in symmetric tree--like tableaux. In this paper, we prove the first conjecture leaving the proof of the second conjecture to the full version of this paper. Our proofs are based on the bijection with permutation tableaux or type--B permutation tableaux and consequently, we also prove results for the…
We consider two partial orders on standard Young tableaux. The first one is induced from the weak right Bruhat order on symmetric group by Robinson-Schensted algorithm. The second one is induced from the order on Young diagrams by considering a Young tableau as a chain of Young diagrams. We show that these two orders of completely different nature coincide on the subset of Young tableaux with 2 columns or with 2 rows. This fact has very interesting geometric implications for orbital varieties of nilpotent order 2 in sl(n).
The box-ball system is studied from the viewpoint of combinatorics of words and tableaux. Each state of the box-ball system can be transformed into a pair of tableaux $(P,Q)$ by the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence. In the language of tableaux, the $P$-symbol gives rise to a conserved quantity of the box-ball system, and the $Q$-symbol evolves independently of the $P$-symbol. The time evolution of the $Q$-symbol is described explicitly in terms of the box-labels.
The explicit double sum for the associated Laguerre polynomials is derived combinatorially. The moments are described using certain statistics on permutations and permutation tableaux. Another derivation of the double sum is provided using only the moment generating function.
The nonelliptic $\mathsf{A_2}$-webs with $k$ "$+$"s on the top boundary and $3n-2k$ "$-$"s on the bottom boundary combinatorially model the space $\mathsf{Hom}_{\mathfrak{sl}_3}(\mathsf{V}^{\otimes (3n-2k)}, \mathsf{V}^{\otimes k})$ of $\mathfrak{sl}_3$-module maps on tensor powers of the natural $3$-dimensional $\mathfrak{sl}_3$-module $\mathsf{V}$, and they have connections with the combinatorics of Springer varieties. Petersen, Pylyavskyy, and Rhodes showed that the set of such $\mathsf{A_2}$-webs and the set of semistandard tableaux of shape $(3^n)$ and type $\{1^2,\dots,k^2,k+1,\dots, 3n-…
In this paper, we study tree--like tableaux and some of their probabilistic properties. Tree--like tableaux are in bijection with other combinatorial structures, including permutation tableaux, and have a connection to the partially asymmetric simple exclusion process (PASEP), an important model of an interacting particles system. In particular, in the context of tree-like tableaux, a corner corresponds to a node occupied by a particle that could jump to the right while inner corners indicate a particle with an empty node to its left. Thus, the total number of corners represents the number of …
We define two refinements of the skew length statistic on simultaneous core partitions. The first one relies on hook lengths and is used to prove a refined version of the theorem stating that the skew length is invariant under conjugation of the core. The second one is equivalent to a generalisation of Shi tableaux to the rational level of Catalan combinatorics. These rational Shi tableaux encode dominant $p$-stable elements in the affine symmetric group. We prove that the rational Shi tableau is injective, that is, each dominant $p$-stable affine permutation is determined uniquely by its Shi …
We study the combinatorics of the change of basis of three representations of the stationary state algebra of the two parameter simple asymmetric exclusion process. Each of the representations considered correspond to a different set of weighted lattice paths which, when summed over, give the stationary state probability distribution. We show that all three sets of paths are combinatorially related via sequences of bijections and sign reversing involutions.
The inhomogeneous two-species TASEP on a ring is an exclusion process that describes particles of different species hopping clockwise on a ring with parameters giving the hopping rates for different species. We introduce a combinatorial object that we call \emph{toric rhombic alternative tableaux}, which are certain fillings of tableaux on a triangular lattice tiled with rhombi, and are in bijection with the well-studied \emph{multiline queues} of Ferrari and Martin. Using the tableaux, we obtain a formula for the stationary probabilities of this TASEP, which specializes to results of Ayyer an…
Staircase tableaux are combinatorial objects that were first introduced due to a connection with the asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) and Askey-Wilson polynomials. Since their introduction, staircase tableaux have been the object of study in many recent papers. Relevant to this paper, the distri- bution of parameters on the first diagonal was proven to be asymptotically normal. In that same paper, a conjecture was made that the other diagonals would be asymptotically Poisson. Since then, only the second and the third diagonal were proven to follow the conjecture. This paper builds up…
We introduce a new family of noncommutative analogues of the Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions. Our construction relies upon Tevlin's bases and simple q-deformations of the classical combinatorial Hopf algebras. We connect our new Hall-Littlewood functions to permutation tableaux, and also give an exact formula for the q-enumeration of permutation tableaux of a fixed shape. This gives an explicit formula for: the steady state probability of each state in the partially asymmetric exclusion process (PASEP); the polynomial enumerating permutations with a fixed set of weak excedances according t…
The character theory of symmetric groups, and the theory of symmetric functions, both make use of the combinatorics of Young tableaux, such as the Robinson-Schensted algorithm, Schuetzenberger's "jeu de taquin", and evacuation. In 1995 Poirier and the second author introduced some algebraic structures, different from the plactic monoid, which induce some products and coproducts of tableaux, with homomorphisms. Their starting point are the two dual Hopf algebras of permutations, introduced by the authors in 1995. In 2006 Aguiar and Sottile studied in more detail the Hopf algebra of permutations…
This paper is a revision of the combinatorics of fractional exclusion statistics (FES). More specifically, the following exact statement of the generalized Pauli principle is derived: for an $N$-particles system exhibiting FES of extended parameter $g=q/r$ ($q$ and $r$ are co-prime integers such that $0 < q \leq r$), we found that the allowed occupation number of a state is smaller than or equal to $r-q+1$ and \emph{not} to $1/g$ whenever $q\neq 1$ and, moreover, the global occupancy shape (merely represented by a partition of $N$) is admissible if the number of states occupied by at least two…
The cyclic shift graph of a monoid is the graph whose vertices are elements of the monoid and whose edges link elements that differ by a cyclic shift. This paper examines the cyclic shift graphs of `plactic-like' monoids, whose elements can be viewed as combinatorial objects of some type: aside from the plactic monoid itself (the monoid of Young tableaux), examples include the hypoplactic monoid (quasi-ribbon tableaux), the sylvester monoid (binary search trees), the stalactic monoid (stalactic tableaux), the taiga monoid (binary search trees with multiplicities), and the Baxter monoid (pairs …
The partially asymmetric exclusion process (PASEP) is an important model from statistical mechanics which describes a system of interacting particles hopping left and right on a one-dimensional lattice of N sites. It is partially asymmetric in the sense that the probability of hopping left is q times the probability of hopping right. Additionally, particles may enter from the left with probability alpha and exit from the right with probability beta. It has been observed that the (unique) stationary distribution of the PASEP has remarkable connections to combinatorics -- see for example the pap…
The study of permutation and partition statistics is a classical topic in enumerative combinatorics. The major index statistic on permutations was introduced a century ago by Percy MacMahon in his seminal works. In this extended abstract, we study the well-known generalization of the major index to standard Young tableaux. We present several new results. In one direction, we introduce and study two partial orders on the standard Young tableaux of a given partition shape, in analogy with the strong and weak Bruhat orders on permutations. The existence of such ranked poset structures allows us t…
We demonstrate the use of several tools from Algebraic Combinatorics such as Young tableaux, symmetry operators, the Littlewood-Richardson rule and discrete Fourier transforms of symmetric groups in investigations of algebraic curvature tensors.
We study a generalization of the partially asymmetric exclusion process (PASEP) in which there are $k$ species of particles of varying weights hopping right and left on a one-dimensional lattice of $n$ sites with open boundaries. In this process, only the heaviest particle type can enter on the left of the lattice and exit from the right of the lattice. In the bulk, two adjacent particles of different weights can swap places. We prove a Matrix Ansatz for this model, in which different rates for the swaps are allowed. Based on this Matrix Ansatz, we define a combinatorial object which we call a…
We consider a partially asymmetric exclusion process (PASEP) on a finite number of sites with open and directed boundary conditions. Its partition function was calculated by Blythe, Evans, Colaiori, and Essler. It is known to be a generating function of permutation tableaux by the combinatorial interpretation of Corteel and Williams. We prove bijectively two new combinatorial interpretations. The first one is in terms of weighted Motzkin paths called Laguerre histories and is obtained by refining a bijection of Foata and Zeilberger. Secondly we show that this partition function is the generati…
This thesis deals with three different aspects of the combinatorics of permutations. In the first two papers, two flavours of pattern avoiding permutations are examined; and in the third paper Young tableaux, which are closely related to permutations via representation theory, are studied. In the first paper we give solutations to several interesting problems regarding pattern avoiding doubly alternating permutations, such as finding a bijection between 1234-avoiding permutations and 1234-avoiding doubly alternating permutations of twice the size. In the second paper partial permutations which…
We define a new disordered asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) with two species of particles, first-class particles labelled $\bullet$ and second-class particles labelled ${\scriptstyle \Box}$, on a two-dimensional toroidal lattice. The dynamics is controlled by particles labelled $\bullet$, which only move horizontally, with forward and backward hopping rates $p_i$ and $q_i$ respectively if the $\bullet$ is on row $i$. The motion of particles labelled ${\scriptstyle \Box}$ depends on the relative position of these with respect to $\bullet$'s, and can be both horizontal and vertical. We…
We identify a subalgebra \pH_n of the extended affine Hecke algebra \eH_n of type A. The subalgebra \pH_n is a \u-analogue of the monoid algebra of §_n \ltimes \ZZ_{\geq 0}^n and inherits a canonical basis from that of \eH_n. We show that its left cells are naturally labeled by tableaux filled with positive integer entries having distinct residues mod n, which we term \emph{positive affine tableaux} (PAT). We then exhibit a cellular subquotient \R_{1^n} of \pH_n that is a \u-analogue of the ring of coinvariants \CC[y_1,...,y_n]/(e_1,...,e_n) with left cells labeled by PAT that are essentially …
The Totally Asymmetric Simple Exclusion Process (TASEP) is a non-equilibrium particle model on a finite one-dimensional lattice with open boundaries. In our earlier paper, we obtained a determinantal formula that computes the steady state probabilities of this process by the enumeration of "Catalan alternative tableaux", which are certain fillings of Young diagrams. Here, we present a new, more illuminating bijective proof of this determinantal formula using the Lindström-Gessel-Viennot Lemma.
Recently James Martin introduced multiline queues, and used them to give a combinatorial formula for the stationary distribution of the multispecies asymmetric simple exclusion exclusion process (ASEP) on a circle. The ASEP is a model of particles hopping on a one-dimensional lattice, which was introduced around 1970, and has been extensively studied in statistical mechanics, probability, and combinatorics. In this article we give an independent proof of Martin's result, and we show that by introducing additional statistics on multiline queues, we can use them to give a new combinatorial formu…
