For a given orthonormal basis $(f_n)$ on a probability measure space, we want to describe all Markov operators which have the $f_n$ as eigenvectors. We introduce for that what we call the hypergroup property. We study this property in three different cases. On finite sets, this property appears as the dual of the GKS property linked with correlation inequalities in statistical mechanics. The representation theory of groups provides generic examples where these two properties are satisfied, although this group structure is not necessary in general. The hypergroup property also holds for Sturm--Liouville bases associated with log-concave symmetric measures on a compact interval, as stated in Achour--Trimèche's theorem. We give some criteria to relax this symmetry condition in view of extensions to a more general context. In the case of Jacobi polynomials with non-symmetric parameters, the hypergroup property is nothing else than Gasper's theorem. The proof we present is based on a natural interpretation of these polynomials as harmonic functions and is related to analysis on spheres. The proof relies on the representation of the polynomials as the moments of a complex variable.
The Markov commutator associated to a finite Markov kernel P is the convex semigroup consisting of all Markov kernels commuting with P. Its interest comes from its relation with the hypergroup property and with the notion of Markovian duality by intertwining. In particular, it is shown that the discrete analogue of the Achour-Trim{è}che's theorem, asserting the preservation of non-negativity by the wave equations associated to certain Metropolis birth and death transition kernels, cannot be extended to all convex potentials. But it remains true for symmetric and monotone convex potentials. Key…
A Markov operator $P$ on a $σ$-finite measure space $(X, Σ, m)$ with invariant measure $m$ is said to have Krengel-Lin decomposition if $L^2 (X) = E_0 \oplus L^2 (X,Σ_d)$ where $E_0 = \{f \in L^2 (X) \mid ||P^n (f) || \ra 0 \}$ and $Σ_d$ is the deterministic $σ$-field of $P$. We consider convolution operators and we show that a measure $\lam$ on a hypergroup has Krengel-Lin decomposition if and only if the sequence $(\check \lam ^n *\lam ^n)$ converges to an idempotent or $\lam$ is scattered. We verify this condition for probabilities on Tortrat groups, on commutative hypergroups and on centra…
We prove sharp estimates on heat kernels and Green functions for subordinate Markov processes with both discrete an continuous time, under relatively weak assumptions about original processes as well as Laplace exponents of subordinators. We also show stability of heat kernel estimates in the discrete settings.
In this paper we show that we can use Markov kernels as a model for optimal transport. This new framework can be easily translated into the standard coupling formulation of optimal transport, and we show that we can use a coupling as a Markov kernel for many optimal transport problems. Using kernels allows us to extend optimal transport to signed measures and treats the support of the measure as the salient feature. This approach reveals additional structure for one-dimensional signed optimal transport.
A known property of conditional expectation is extended to the framework of Markov kernels. Its meaning in terms of densities is provided. Some examples located in the field of clinical diagnosis are presented to delimit the main result of the paper.
All one-condition generalized inverses of the Markovian kernel I - P, where P is the transition matrix of a finite irreducible Markov chain, can be uniquely specified in terms of the stationary probabilities and the mean first passage times of the underlying Markov chain. Special sub-families include the group inverse of I - P, Kemeny and Snell's fundamental matrix of the Markov chain and the Moore-Penrose g-inverse. The elements of some sub-families of the generalized inverses can also be re-expressed involving the second moments of the recurrence time variables. Some applications to Kemeny's…
In this paper we investigate the kernel estimator of the density for a stationary reversible Markov chain. The proofs are based on a new central limit theorem for a triangular array of reversible Markov chains obtained under conditions imposed to covariances, which has interest in itself.
By making full use of heat kernel estimates, we establish the integral tests on the zero-one laws of upper and lower bounds for the sample path ranges of symmetric Markov processes. In particular, these results concerning on upper rate bounds are applicable for local and non-local Dirichlet forms, while lower rate bounds are investigated in both subcritical setting and critical setting.
Let $\{X_n\}_{n\in\N}$ be a Markov chain on a measurable space $\X$ with transition kernel $P$ and let $V:\X\r[1,+\infty)$. The Markov kernel $P$ is here considered as a linear bounded operator on the weighted-supremum space $\cB_V$ associated with $V$. Then the combination of quasi-compactness arguments with precise analysis of eigen-elements of $P$ allows us to estimate the geometric rate of convergence $ρ_V(P)$ of $\{X_n\}_{n\in\N}$ to its invariant probability measure in operator norm on $\cB_V$. A general procedure to compute $ρ_V(P)$ for discrete Markov random walks with identically dist…
The solution to a multivariate linear Stochastic Differential Equation (SDE) with constant initial state is well known to be a Gaussian Markov process, but its covariance kernel involves the solution to an integral equation in the general case. We show that the covariance kernel has a simpler semi-parametric form for families of such solutions representing increments of a common process. We also show that a covariance kernel of a particular parametric form is necessary and sufficient for a solution to possess stationary increments and for a Gaussian process, in considerable generality, to have…
We work out some relations between duality and intertwining in the context of discrete Markov chains, fixing up the background of previous relations first established for birth and death chains and their Siegmund duals. In view of the results, the monotone properties resulting from the Siegmund dual of birth and death chains are revisited in some detail, with emphasis on the non neutral Moran model. We also introduce an ultrametric type dual extending the Siegmund kernel. Finally we discuss the sharp dual, following closely the Diaconis-Fill study.
Let $P$ be a Markov kernel on a measurable space $\X$ and let $V:\X\r[1,+\infty)$. We provide various assumptions, based on drift conditions, under which $P$ is quasi-compact on the weighted-supremum Banach space $(\cB_V,\|\cdot\|_V)$ of all the measurable functions $f : \X\r\C$ such that $\|f\|_V := \sup_{x\in \X} |f(x)|/V(x) < \infty$. Furthermore we give bounds for the essential spectral radius of $P$. Under additional assumptions, these results allow us to derive the convergence rate of $P$ on $\cB_V$, that is the geometric rate of convergence of the iterates $P^n$ to the stationary distri…
An asymptotic model for extreme behavior of certain Markov chains is the "tail chain". Generally taking the form of a multiplicative random walk, it is useful in deriving extremal characteristics such as point process limits. We place this model in a more general context, formulated in terms of extreme value theory for transition kernels, and extend it by formalizing the distinction between extreme and non-extreme states. We make the link between the update function and transition kernel forms considered in previous work, and we show that the tail chain model leads to a multivariate regular va…
We consider a large class of symmetric pure jump Markov processes dominated by isotropic unimodal Lévy processes with weak scaling conditions. First, we establish sharp two-sided heat kernel estimates for these processes in $C^{1,1}$ open sets. As corollaries of our main results, we obtain sharp two-sided Green function estimates and a scale invariant boundary Harnack inequality with explicit decay rates in $C^{1,1}$ open sets.
We prove existence of boundary limits of ratios of positive harmonic functions for a wide class of Markov processes with jumps and irregular domains, in the context of general metric measure spaces. As a corollary, we prove uniqueness of the Martin kernel at each boundary point, that is, we identify the Martin boundary with the topological boundary. We also prove a Martin representation theorem for harmonic functions. Examples covered by our results include: strictly stable Lévy processes in R^d with positive continuous density of the Lévy measure; stable-like processes in R^d and in domains; …
We consider the first-passage percolation problem on the random graph with vertex set N\times{0,1}, edges joining vertices at Euclidean distance equal to unity and independent exponential edge weights. We provide a central limit theorem for the first-passage times l_n between the vertices (0,0) and (n,0), thus extending earlier results about the almost sure convergence of l_n/n as n goes to infinity. We use generating function techniques to compute the n-step transition kernels of a closely related Markov chain which can be used to calculate explicitly the asymptotic variance in the central li…
We study two types of Metropolis-Hastings (MH) reversiblizations for non-reversible Markov chains with Markov kernel $P$. While the first type is the classical Metropolised version of $P$, we introduce a new self-adjoint kernel which captures the opposite transition effect of the first type, that we call the second MH kernel. We investigate the spectral relationship between $P$ and the two MH kernels. Along the way, we state a version of Weyl's inequality for the spectral gap of $P$ (and hence its additive reversiblization), as well as an expansion of $P$. Both results are expressed in terms o…
We give a number of results on approximations of Markov kernels in total variation and Wasserstein norms weighted by a Lyapunov function. The results are applied to examples from Bayesian statistics where approximations to transition kernels are made to reduce computational costs.
In this paper, we establish sharp two-sided heat kernel estimates for a large class of symmetric Markov processes in exterior $C^{1,η}$ open sets for all $t> 0$. The processes are symmetric pure jump Markov processes with jumping kernel intensity $$κ(x, y)ψ(|x-y|)^{-1}|x-y|^{-d-α}$$ where $α\in(0,2)$, $ψ$ is an increasing function on $[ 0, \infty)$ with $ψ(r)=1$ on $0<r\le 1$ and $c_1e^{c_2r^β}\le ψ(r)\le c_3e^{c_4r^β}$ on $r>1$ for $β\in[0, \infty]$. A symmetric function $κ(x, y)$ is bounded by two positive constants and $|κ(x, y)-κ(x,x)|\le c_5 |x-y|^ρ$ for $|x-y|<1$ and $ρ>α/2$. As a coroll…
Let $Z=(Z^{1}, \ldots, Z^{d})$ be the $d$-dimensional Lévy processes where $Z^{i}$'s are independent $1$-dimensional Lévy processes with jump kernel $J^{ϕ, 1}(u,w) =|u-w|^{-1}ϕ(|u-w|)^{-1}$ for $u, w\in \mathbb R$. Here $ϕ$ is an increasing function with weak scaling condition of order $\underline α, \overline α\in (0, 2)$. Let $J(x,y) \asymp J^ϕ(x,y)$ be the symmetric measurable function where \begin{align*} J^ϕ(x,y):=\begin{cases} J^{ϕ, 1}(x^i, y^i)\qquad&\text{ if $x^i \ne y^i$ for some $i$ and $x^j = y^j$ for all $j \ne i$}\\ 0\qquad&\text{ if $x^i \ne y^i$ for more than one index $i$.} \e…
The probability that a transient Markov chain, or a Brownian path, will ever visit a given set Lambda, is classically estimated using the capacity of Lambda with respect to the Green kernel G(x,y). We show that replacing the Green kernel by the Martin kernel G(x,y)/G(0,y) yields improved estimates, which are exact up to a factor of 2. These estimates are applied to random walks on lattices, and also to explain a connection found by R. Lyons between capacity and percolation on trees.
In this paper, we establish the coincidence of two classes of $L^p$-Kato class measures in the framework of symmetric Markov processes admitting upper and lower estimates of heat kernel under mild conditions. One class of $L^p$-Kato class measures is defined by the $p$-th power of positive order resolvent kernel, another is defined in terms of the $p$-th power of Green kernel depending on some exponents related to the heat kernel estimates. We also prove that $q$-th integrable functions on balls with radius $1$ having uniformity of its norm with respect to centers are of $L^p$-Kato class if $q…
Let $u=\{u(t,x);t \in [0,T], x \in {\mathbb{R}}^{d}\}$ be the process solution of the stochastic heat equation $u_{t}=Δu+ \dot F, u(0,\cdot)=0$ driven by a Gaussian noise $\dot F$, which is white in time and has spatial covariance induced by the kernel $f$. In this paper we prove that the process $u$ is locally germ Markov, if $f$ is the Bessel kernel of order $α=2k,k \in \bN_{+}$, or $f$ is the Riesz kernel of order $α=4k,k \in \bN_{+}$.
In this paper, we consider general Markov chains (MC), specified by the transition probability (kernel) $ P (x, E) $, finitely additive in the second argument. Such MC are studied within the framework of the functional operator treatment. The state space (phase space) of the MC $ X $ has any cardinality, and the sigma-algebra $ Σ$ is discrete, i.e. is the set of all subsets in $ X $. This construction of the phase space $ (X, Σ) $ allows us to decompose the Markov kernel $ P (x, E) $ into the sum of two components - countably additive and purely finitely additive in the second argument and mea…
A new and rather broad class of stationary (i.e. stochastically translation invariant) random tessellations of the $d$-dimensional Euclidean space is introduced, which are called shape-driven nested Markov tessellations. Locally, these tessellations are constructed by means of a spatio-temporal random recursive split dynamics governed by a family of Markovian split kernel, generalizing thereby the -- by now classical -- construction of iteration stable random tessellations. By providing an explicit global construction of the tessellations, it is shown that under suitable assumptions on the spl…
Permanental sequences with non-symmetric kernels that are generalization of the potentials of a Markov chain with state space $\{0,1/2, \ldots, 1/n,\ldots\}$ that was introduced by Kolmogorov, are studied. Depending on a parameter in the kernels we obtain an exact rate of divergence of the sequence at $0$, an exact local modulus of continuity of the sequence at $0$, or a precise bounded discontinuity for the sequence at $0$.
Let $P$ be a Markov kernel on a measurable space $\X$ and let $V:\X\r[1,+\infty)$. This paper provides explicit connections between the $V$-geometric ergodicity of $P$ and that of finite-rank nonnegative sub-Markov kernels $\Pc_k$ approximating $P$. A special attention is paid to obtain an efficient way to specify the convergence rate for $P$ from that of $\Pc_k$ and conversely. Furthermore, explicit bounds are obtained for the total variation distance between the $P$-invariant probability measure and the $\Pc_k$-invariant positive measure. The proofs are based on the Keller-Liverani perturbat…
We derive sharp, local and dimension dependent hypercontractive bounds on the Markov kernel of a large class of diffusion semigroups. Unlike the dimension free ones, they capture refined properties of Markov kernels, such as trace estimates. They imply classical bounds on the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck semigroup and a dimensional and refined (transportation) Talagrand inequality when applied to the Hamilton-Jacobi equation. Hypercontractive bounds on the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck semigroup driven by a non-diffusive Lévy semigroup are also investigated. Curvature-dimension criteria are the main tool in the an…
Starting from a given Markov kernel on a finite set $V$ and a bijection $g$ of $V$, we construct and study a time inhomogeneous Markov chain whose kernel at time $n$ is obtained from $K$ by transport of $g^{n-1}$. We show that this construction leads to interesting examples, and we obtain quantitative results for some of these examples.
We show how the essential spectral radius of a bounded positive kernel, acting on bounded functions, is linked to its lower approximation by certain absolutely continuous kernels. The standart Doeblin's condition can be interpreted in this context, and, when suitably reformulated, it leads to a formula for the essential spectral radius. This results may be used to characterize the Markov kernels having a quasi-compact action on a space of measurable functions bounded with respect to some test function, when no irreducibilty and aperiodicity are assumed.
The purpose of this article is to describe all possible beliefs of market participants on objective measures under Markovian environments when a risk-neutral measure is given. To achieve this, we employ the Martin integral representation of Markovian pricing kernels. Then, we offer economic and financial implications of this representation. This representation is useful to analyze the long-term behavior of the state variable in the market. The Ross recovery theorem and the long-term behavior of cash flows are discussed as applications.
We suggest a method for constructing positive harmonic functions for a wide class of transition kernels on $Z^+$. We also find natural conditions under which these functions have positive finite limits at infinity. Further, we apply our results on harmonic functions to asymptotically homogeneous Markov chains on $Z^+$ with asymptotically negative drift. More precisely, assuming that Markov chain satisfy Cramér's condition, we study the tail asymptotics of the stationary distribution. In particular, we clarify the influence of the rate of convergence of jumps of the chain towards the limiting d…
In this paper, we study the transition densities of pure-jump symmetric Markov processes in $ {\mathbb R}^d$, whose jumping kernels are comparable to radially symmetric functions with mixed polynomial growths. Under some mild assumptions on their scale functions, we establish sharp two-sided estimates of transition densities (heat kernel estimates) for such processes. This is the first study on global heat kernel estimates of jump processes (including non-Lévy processes) whose weak scaling index is not necessarily strictly less than 2. As an application, we proved that the finite second moment…
In this paper, we establish sharp two-sided estimates for transition densities of a large class of subordinate Markov processes. As applications, we show that the parabolic Harnack inequality and Hölder regularity hold for parabolic functions of such processes, and derive sharp two-sided Green function estimates.
It is well known that Nash-type inequalities for symmetric Dirichlet forms are equivalent to on-diagonal heat kernel upper bounds for the associated symmetric Markov semigroups. In this paper, we show that both imply (and hence are equivalent to) off-diagonal heat kernel upper bounds under some mild assumptions. Our approach is based on a new generalized Davies' method. Our results extend that of \cite{CKS} for Nash-type inequalities with power order considerably and also extend that of \cite{Gri} for second order differential operators on a complete non-compact manifold.
We show how the evolving set methodology of Morris and Peres can be used to show Cheeger inequalities for bounding the spectral gap of a finite Markov kernel. This leads to sharp versions of several previous Cheeger inequalities, including ones involving edge-expansion, vertex-expansion, and mixtures of both. A bound on the smallest eigenvalue also follows.
In this paper we study interior potential-theoretic properties of purely discontinuous Markov processes in proper open subsets $D\subset \mathbb{R}^d$. The jump kernels of the processes may be degenerate at the boundary in the sense that they may vanish or blow up at the boundary. Under certain natural conditions on the jump kernel, we show that the scale invariant Harnack inequality holds for any proper open subset $D\subset \mathbb{R}^d$ and prove some interior regularity of harmonic functions. We also prove a Dynkin-type formula and several other interior results.
We study the kernel estimator of the transition density of bifurcating Markov chains. Under some ergodic and regularity properties, we prove that this estimator is consistent and asymptotically normal. Next, in the numerical studies, we propose two data-driven methods to choose the bandwidth parameters. These methods are based on the so-called two bandwidths approach.
We propose an adaptive estimator for the stationary distribution of a bifurcating Markov Chain on $\mathbb R^d$. Bifurcating Markov chains (BMC for short) are a class of stochastic processes indexed by regular binary trees. A kernel estimator is proposed whose bandwidth is selected by a method inspired by the works of Goldenshluger and Lepski [18]. Drawing inspiration from dimension jump methods for model selection, we also provide an algorithm to select the best constant in the penalty.
Noncolliding Brownian motion (Dyson's Brownian motion model with parameter $β=2$) and noncolliding Bessel processes are determinantal processes; that is, their space-time correlation functions are represented by determinants. Under a proper scaling limit, such as the bulk, soft-edge and hard-edge scaling limits, these processes converge to determinantal processes describing systems with an infinite number of particles. The main purpose of this paper is to show the strong Markov property of these limit processes, which are determinantal processes with the extended sine kernel, extended Airy ker…
We study the asymptotic behavior of kernel estimators of asymptotic variances (or long-run variances) for a class of adaptive Markov chains. The convergence is studied both in $L^p$ and almost surely. The results also apply to Markov chains and improve on the existing literature by imposing weaker conditions. We illustrate the results with applications to the $\operatorname {GARCH}(1,1)$ Markov model and to an adaptive MCMC algorithm for Bayesian logistic regression.
For a Markov transition kernel $P$ and a probability distribution $ μ$ on nonnegative integers, a time-sampled Markov chain evolves according to the transition kernel $P_μ = \sum_k μ(k)P^k.$ In this note we obtain CLT conditions for time-sampled Markov chains and derive a spectral formula for the asymptotic variance. Using these results we compare efficiency of Barker's and Metropolis algorithms in terms of asymptotic variance.
Fuzzy logic is a way to argue with boolean predicates for which we only have a confidence value between 0 and 1 rather than a well defined truth value. It is tempting to interpret such a confidence as a probability. We use Markov kernels, parametrised probability distributions, to do just that. As a consequence we get general fuzzy logic connectives from probabilistic computations on products of the booleans, stressing the importance of joint confidence functions. We discuss binary logic connectives in detail and recover the "classic" fuzzy connectives as bounds for the confidence for general …
