We prove existence of global attractors for damped hyperbolic equations of the form $$\aligned \eps u_{tt}+α(x) u_t+β(x)u- \sum_{ij}(a_{ij}(x) u_{x_j})_{x_i}&=f(x,u),\quad x\in Ω, t\in[0,\infty[, u(x,t)&=0,\quad x\in \partial Ω, t\in[,\infty[.\endaligned$$ on an unbounded domain $Ω$, without smoothness assumptions on $β(\cdot)$, $a_{ij}(\cdot)$, $f(\cdot,u)$ and $\partialΩ$, and $f(x,\cdot)$ having critical or subcritical growth.
In this paper the long time behaviour of the solutions of 3-D strongly damped wave equation is studied. It is shown that the semigroup generated by this equation possesses a global attractor in H_{0}^{1}(Ω)\times L_{2}(Ω) and then it is proved that this global attractor is a bounded subset of H^{2}(Ω)\times H^{2}(Ω) and also a global attractor in H^{2}(Ω)\cap H_{0}^{1}(Ω)\times H_{0}^{1}(Ω).
In this paper we consider the long time behavior of the weakly damped, forced Korteweg-de Vries equation in the Sololev spaces of the negative indices in the periodic case. We prove that the solutions are uniformly bounded in $\dot{H}^s(\T)$ for $s>-\dfrac{1}{2}$. Moreover, we show that the solution-map possesses a global attractor in $\dot{H}^s(\T)$ for $s>-\dfrac{1}{2}$, which is a compact set in $H^{s+3}(\T)$.
This paper is devoted to the study of the asymptotic dynamics of the stochastic damped sine-Gordon equation with homogeneous Neumann boundary condition. It is shown that for any positive damping and diffusion coefficients, the equation possesses a random attractor, and when the damping and diffusion coefficients are sufficiently large, the random attractor is a one-dimensional random horizontal curve regardless of the strength of noise. Hence its dynamics is not chaotic. It is also shown that the equation has a rotation number provided that the damping and diffusion coefficients are sufficient…
The existence of a random attractor for the stochastic FitzHugh-Nagumo system defined on an unbounded domain is established. The pullback asymptotic compactness of the stochastic system is proved by uniform estimates on solutions for large space and time variables. These estimates are obtained by a cut-off technique.
We prove existence of global attractors for parabolic equations of the form $$u_t+β(x)u-\sum_{ij}\partial_i(a_{ij}(x)\partial_j u)=f(x,u)$$ with Dirichlet boundary condition on an arbitrary unbounded domain $Ω$ in $\R^3$, without smoothness assumptions on $a_{ij}(\cdot)$ and $\partialΩ$.
Under fairly general assumptions, we prove that every compact invariant set $\mathcal I$ of the semiflow generated by the semilinear damped wave equation u_{tt}+αu_t+β(x)u-\Deltau = f(x,u), (t,x)\in[0,+\infty[\timesΩ, u = 0, (t,x)\in[0,+\infty[\times\partialΩin $H^1_0(Ω)\times L^2(Ω) has finite Hausdorff and fractal dimension. Here $Ω$ is a regular, possibly unbounded, domain in $\R^3$ and $f(x,u)$ is a nonlinearity of critical growth. The nonlinearity $f(x,u)$ needs not to satisfy any dissipativeness assumption and the invariant subset $\mathcal I$ needs not to be an attractor. If $f(x,u)$ is…
The existence of a pullback attractor is established for the singularly perturbed FitzHugh-Nagumo system defined on the entire space $R^n$ when external terms are unbounded in a phase space. The pullback asymptotic compactness of the system is proved by using uniform a priori estimates for far-field values of solutions. Although the limiting system has no global attractor, we show that the pullback attractors for the perturbed system with bounded external terms are uniformly bounded, and hence do not blow up as a small parameter approaches zero.
We prove existence of the global attractor of the damped and driven 2D Euler--Bardina equations on the torus and give an explicit two-sided estimate of its dimension that is sharp as $α\to0^+$.
This paper is concerned with the asymptotic behavior of solutions of the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations with both non-autonomous deterministic and stochastic terms defined on unbounded domains. We first introduce a continuous cocycle for the equations and then prove the existence and uniqueness of tempered random attractors. We also characterize the structures of the random attractors by complete solutions. When deterministic forcing terms are periodic, we show that the tempered random attractors are also periodic. Since the Sobolev embeddings on unbounded domains are not compact, we …
We consider the damped and driven Navier--Stokes system with stress free boundary conditions and the damped Euler system in a bounded domain $Ω\subset\mathbf{R}^2$. We show that the damped Euler system has a (strong) global attractor in~$H^1(Ω)$. We also show that in the vanishing viscosity limit the global attractors of the Navier--Stokes system converge in the non-symmetric Hausdorff distance in $H^1(Ω)$ to the the strong global attractor of the limiting damped Euler system (whose solutions are not necessarily unique).
The existence of a global attractor for wave equations in unbounded domains is a challenging problem due to the non-compactness of the Sobolev embeddings. To overcome this difficulty, some authors have worked with weighted Sobolev spaces which restrict the choice of the initial data. Using the "tail estimation method" introduced by B. Wang for reaction diffusion equations, we establish in this paper the existence of a global attractor for two wave equations in the traditional Hilbert spaces $\displaystyle H^1(Ω)\times L^2(Ω)$ where $Ω$ is an unbounded domain of $\R^N$. The first equation, with…
We prove that the weakly damped nonlinear Schrödinger flow in $L^2(\mathbb{R})$ provides a dynamical system which possesses a global attractor. The proof relies on the continuity of the Schrödinger flow for the weak topology in $L^2(\R)$.
We consider finite energy solutions for the damped and driven two-dimensional Navier--Stokes equations in the plane and show that the corresponding dynamical system possesses a global attractor. We obtain upper bounds for its fractal dimension when the forcing term belongs to the whole scale of homogeneous Sobolev spaces from -1 to 1
The dissipative wave equation with a critical quintic nonlinearity in smooth bounded three dimensional domain is considered. Based on the recent extension of the Strichartz estimates to the case of bounded domains, the existence of a compact global attractor for the solution semigroup of this equation is established. Moreover, the smoothness of the obtained attractor is also shown.
We consider a nonlinear reaction-diffusion equation settled on the whole euclidean space. We prove the well-posedness of the corresponding Cauchy problem in a general functional setting, namely, when the initial datum is uniformly locally bounded in L^2. Then we adapt the short trajectory method to establish the existence of the global attractor and, if the space dimension is at most 3, we also find an upper bound of its Kolmogorov's entropy.
This paper is concerned with the initial boundary value problem for one dimensional strongly damped wave equation involving $p$-Laplacian. For $p>2$, we establish the existence of weak local attractors for this problem in $W_{0}^{1,p}(0,1)\times L^{2}(0,1)$. Under restriction $2<p<4$, we prove that the semigroup, generated by the considered problem, possesses a strong global attractor in $W_{0}^{1,p}(0,1)\times L^{2}(0,1)$ and this attractor is a bounded subset of $W^{1,\infty }(0,1)\times W^{1,\infty }(0,1)$.
We study the non-autonomous weakly damped wave equation with subquintic growth condition on the nonlinearity. Our main focus is the class of Shatah--Struwe solutions, which satisfy the Strichartz estimates and are coincide with the class of solutions obtained by the Galerkin method. For this class we show the existence and smoothness of pullback, uniform, and cocycle attractors and the relations between them. We also prove that these non-autonomous attractors converge upper-semicontinuously to the global attractor for the limit autonomous problem if the time-dependent nonlinearity tends to tim…
In this paper, we study the longtime dynamics for the weakly damped wave equation with quintic non-linearity in a bounded smooth domain of $\mathbb{R}^3.$ Based on the Strichartz estimates for the case of bounded domains, we establish the existence of a strong global attractor in the phase space $H^2(Ω)\cap H^1_0(Ω)\times H^1_0(Ω)$. Moreover, the finite fractal dimension of the attractor is also shown with the help of the quasi-stable estimation.
We study the global attractors for the damped 3D Euler--Bardina equations with the regularization parameter $α>0$ and Ekman damping coefficient $γ>0$ endowed with periodic boundary conditions as well as their damped Euler limit $α\to0$. We prove that despite the possible non-uniqueness of solutions of the limit Euler system and even the non-existence of such solutions in the distributional sense, the limit dynamics of the corresponding dissipative solutions introduced by P.\,Lions can be described in terms of attractors of the properly constructed trajectory dynamical system. Moreover, the con…
We prove existence of the global attractor of the damped and driven Euler--Bardina equations on the 2D sphere and on arbitrary domains on the sphere and give explicit estimates of its fractal dimension in terms of the physical parameters.
In this paper, we prove the existences of pullback attractors in $L^{p}(\mathbb{R}^N)\times L^{2}(\mathbb{R}^N)$ for stochastic Fitzhugh-Nagumo system driven by both additive noises and deterministic non-autonomous forcings. The nonlinearity is polynomial like growth with exponent $p-1$. The asymptotic compactness for the cocycle in $L^{p}(\mathbb{R}^N)\times L^{2}(\mathbb{R}^N)$ is proved by using asymptotic a priori method, where the plus and minus signs of the nonlinearity at large value are not required.
We prove the existence of the global attractor in $ \dot H^s$, $s > 11/12$ for the weakly damped and forced mKdV on the one dimensional torus. The existence of global attractor below the energy space has not been known, though the global well-posedness below the energy space is established. We directly apply the I-method to the damped and forced mKdV, because the Miura transformation does not work for the mKdV with damping and forcing terms. We need to make a close investigation into the trilinear estimates involving resonant frequencies, which are different from the bilinear estimates corresp…
Well-posedness and global attractor are established for 2D damped driven nonlinear Schrödinger equation with almost periodic pumping in a bounded region. The key role is played by a novel application of the energy equation.
We establish the well-posedness of a strongly damped semilinear wave equation equipped with nonlinear hyperbolic dynamic boundary conditions. Results are carried out with the presence of a parameter distinguishing whether the underlying operator is analytic, $α>0$, or only of Gevrey class, $α=0$. We establish the existence of a global attractor for each $α\in[0,1],$ and we show that the family of global attractors is upper-semicontinuous as $α\rightarrow0.$ Furthermore, for each $α\in[0,1]$, we show the existence of a weak exponential attractor. A weak exponential attractor is a finite dimensi…
We consider the damped and driven two-dimensional Euler equations in the plane with weak solutions having finite energy and enstrophy. We show that these (possibly non-unique) solutions satisfy the energy and enstrophy equality. It is shown that this system has a strong global and a strong trajectory attractor in the Sobolev space $H^1$. A similar result on the strong attraction holds in the spaces $H^1\cap\{u:\ \|\mathrm{curl} u\|_{L^p}<\infty\}$ for $p\ge2$.
We prove that the weakly damped cubic Schrödinger flow in $L^2(\T)$ provides a dynamical system that possesses a global attractor. The proof relies on a sharp study of the behavior of the associated flow-map with respect to the weak $ L^2(\T) $-convergence inspired by a previous work of the author. Combining the compactness in $ L^2(\T) $ of the attractor with the approach developed by Goubet, we show that the attractor is actually a compact set of $ H^2(\T) $. This asymptotic smoothing effect is optimal in view of the regularity of the steady states.
The dependence of the fractal dimension of global attractors for the damped 3D Euler--Bardina equations on the regularization parameter $α>0$ and Ekman damping coefficient $γ>0$ is studied. We present explicit upper bounds for this dimension for the case of the whole space, periodic boundary conditions, and the case of bounded domain with Dirichlet boundary conditions. The sharpness of these estimates when $α\to0$ and $γ\to0$ (which corresponds in the limit to the classical Euler equations) is demonstrated on the 3D Kolmogorov flows on a torus.
We consider the initial value problem for the semilinear plate equation with nonlocal nonlinearity. We prove the existence of global attractor and then establish the regularity and finite dimensionality of this attractor.
We consider the asymptotic behavior of quasilinear parabolic equations posed in a family of unbounded domains that degenerates onto a lower dimensional set. Considering an auxiliary family of weighted Sobolev spaces we show the existence of global attractors and we analyze convergence properties of the solutions as well of the attractors.
We study the decay of the semigroup generated by the damped wave equation in an unbounded domain. We first prove under the natural geometric control condition the exponential decay of the semigroup. Then we prove under a weaker condition the logarithmic decay of the solutions (assuming that the initial data are smoother). As corollaries, we obtain several extensions of previous results of stabilisation and control.
We show that the global attractor of a weakly damped and driven Korteweg-de Vries equation (KdV) is embedded in the long-time dynamics of an ordinary differential equation called a determining form. In particular, there is a one-to-one identification of the trajectories in the global attractor of the damped and driven KdV and the steady state solutions of the determining form. Moreover, we analyze a data assimilation algorithm (down-scaling) for the weakly damped and driven KdV. We show that given a certain number of low Fourier modes of a reference solution of the KdV equation, the algorithm …
We study two damped and forced discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equations on the one-dimensional infinite lattice. Without damping and forcing they are represented by the integrable Ablowitz-Ladik equation (AL) featuring non-local cubic nonlinear terms, and its standard (nonintegrable) counterpart with local cubic nonlinear terms (DNLS). The global existence of a unique solution to the initial value problem for both, the damped and forced AL and DNLS, is proven. It is further shown that for sufficiently close initial data, their corresponding solutions stay close for all times. Concerning the as…
We prove the existence of a compact random attractor for the stochastic Benjamin-Bona-Mahony Equation defined on an unbounded domain. This random attractor is invariant and attracts every pulled-back tempered random set under the forward flow. The asymptotic compactness of the random dynamical system is established by a tail-estimates method, which shows that the solutions are uniformly asymptotically small when space and time variables approach infinity.
This paper is devoted to Bresse systems, a robust model for circular beams, given by a set of three coupled wave equations. The main objective is to establish the existence of global attractors for dynamics of semilinear problems with localized damping. In order to deal with localized damping a unique continuation property (UCP) is needed. Therefore we also provide a suitable UCP for Bresse systems. Our strategy is to set the problem in a Riemannian geometry framework and see the system as a single equation with different Riemann metrics. Then we perform Carleman-type estimates to get our resu…
In this paper we show that the global attractor of the 1D damped, driven, nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) is embedded in the long-time dynamics of a determining form. The determining form is an ordinary differential equation in a space of trajectories $X=C_b^1(\mathbb{R}, P_mH^2)$ where $P_m$ is the $L^2$-projector onto the span of the first $m$ Fourier modes. There is a one-to-one identification with the trajectories in the global attractor of the NLS and the steady states of the determining form. We also give an improved estimate for the number of the determining modes.
Under consideration is the damped semilinear wave equation \[ u_{tt}+u_t-Δu+u+f(u)=0 \] in a bounded domain $Ω$ in $\mathbb{R}^3$ subject to an acoustic boundary condition with a singular perturbation, which we term "massless acoustic perturbation," \[ \epδ_{tt}+δ_t+δ= -u_t\quad\text{for}\quad \ep\in[0,1]. \] By adapting earlier work by S. Frigeri, we prove the existence of a family of global attractors for each $\ep\in[0,1]$. We also establish the optimal regularity for the global attractors, as well as the existence of an exponential attractor, for each $\ep\in[0,1].$ The later result insure…
We develop the attractors theory for the semigroups with multidimensional time belonging to some closed cone in an Euclidean space and apply the obtained general results to partial differential equations (PDEs) in unbounded domains. The main attention is payed to elliptic boundary problems in general unbounded domains. In contrast to the previous works in this direction our theory does not require the underlying domain to be cylindrical or cone-like or to be shift semi-invariant with respect to some direction. In particular, the theory is applicable to the exterior domains.
This paper is concerned with pullback attractors of the stochastic p-Laplace equation defined on the entire space R^n. We first establish the asymptotic compactness of the equation in L^2(R^n) and then prove the existence and uniqueness of non-autonomous random attractors. This attractor is pathwise periodic if the non-autonomous deterministic forcing is time periodic. The difficulty of non-compactness of Sobolev embeddings on R^n is overcome by the uniform smallness of solutions outside a bounded domain.
For an arbitrary unbounded domain $Ω\subset\R^3$ and for $\eps>0$, we consider the damped hyperbolic equations \leqno{(H_\eps)} \eps u_{tt}+ u_t+β(x)u- \sum_{ij}(a_{ij}(x) u_{x_j})_{x_i}&=f(x,u),\quad x\in Ω, t\in\ro0,\infty.., u(x,t)&=0,\quad x\in \partial Ω, t\in\ro0,\infty... and their singular limit as $\eps\to0$, i.e. the parabolic equation \leqno{(P)} u_t+β(x)u- \sum_{ij}(a_{ij}(x)u_{x_j})_{x_i}&=f(x,u),\quad x\in Ω, t\in\ro0,\infty.., u(x,t)&=0,\quad x\in \partial Ω, t\in\ro0,\infty... Under suitable assumptions, $(H_\eps)$ possesses a compact global attractor $\Cal A_\eps$ in the phase…
We extend some previous results for the damped wave equation in bounded domains in Euclidean spaces to the unbounded case. In particular, we show that if the damping term is of the form $αa$ with bounded $a$ taking on negative values on a set of positive measure, then there will always exist unbounded solutions for sufficiently large positive $α$. In order to prove these results, we generalize some existing results on the asymptotic behaviour of eigencurves of one-parameter families of Schrodinger operators to the unbounded case, which we believe to be of interest in their own right.
We present a new method of investigating the so-called quasi-linear strongly damped wave equations $$ \partial_t^2u-γ\partial_tΔ_x u-Δ_x u+f(u)= \nabla_x\cdot ϕ'(\nabla_x u)+g $$ in bounded 3D domains. This method allows us to establish the existence and uniqueness of energy solutions in the case where the growth exponent of the non-linearity $ϕ$ is less than 6 and $f$ may have arbitrary polynomial growth rate. Moreover, the existence of a finite-dimensional global and exponential attractors for the solution semigroup associated with that equation and their additional regularity are also estab…
The paper investigates the existence of global attractors and their upper semicontinuity for a structural damped wave equation on $\mathbb{R}^{N}: u_{tt}-Δu+(-Δ)^αu_{t}+u_{t}+u+g(u)=f(x)$, where $α\in (1/2, 1)$ is called a dissipative index. We propose a new method based on the harmonic analysis technique and the commutator estimate to exploit the dissipative effect of the structural damping $(-Δ)^αu_{t}$ and to overcome the essential difficulty: "both the unbounded domain $\mathbb{R}^N$ and the supercritical nonlinearity cause that the Sobolev embedding loses its compactness"; Meanwhile we sh…
A theory on bi-spatial random attractors developed recently by Li \emph{et al.} is extended to study stochastic Fitzhugh-Nagumo system driven by a non-autonomous term as well as a general multiplicative noise. By using the so-called notions of uniform absorption and uniformly pullback asymptotic compactness, it is showed that every generated random cocycle has a pullback attractor in $L^l(\mathbb{R}^N)\times L^2(\mathbb{R}^N)$ with $l\in(2,p]$, and the family of obtained attractors is upper semi-continuous at any intensity of noise. Moreover, if some additional conditions are added, then the s…
Homogenisation of global $\mathcal{A}^ε$ and exponential $\mathcal{M}^ε$ attractors for the damped semi-linear anisotropic wave equation $\partial_t^2 u^ε+γ\partial_t u^ε-{\rm div} \left(a\left( \tfrac{x}ε \right)\nabla u^ε\right)+f(u^ε)=g$, on a bounded domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^3$, is performed. Order-sharp estimates between trajectories $u^ε(t)$ and their homogenised trajectories $u^0(t)$ are established. These estimates are given in terms of the operator-norm difference between resolvents of the elliptic operator ${\rm div}\left(a\left( \tfrac{x}ε \right)\nabla \right)$ and its homogenis…
The asymptotic behavior of solutions of two dimensional stochastic convective Brinkman-Forchheimer (2D SCBF) equations in unbounded domains is discussed in this work (for example, Poincaré domains). We first prove the existence of $\mathbb{H}^1$-random attractors for the stochastic flow generated by 2D SCBF equations (for the absorption exponent $r\in[1,3]$) perturbed by an additive noise on Poincaré domains. Furthermore, we deduce the existence of a unique invariant measure in $\mathbb{H}^1$ for the 2D SCBF equations defined on Poincaré domains. In addition, a remark on the extension of these…
Asymptotic random dynamics of weak solutions for a damped stochastic wave equation with the nonlinearity of arbitrarily large exponent and the additive noise on $\mathbb{R}^n$ is investigated. The existence of a pullback random attractor is proved in a parameter region with a breakthrough in proving the pullback asymptotic compactness of the cocycle with the quasi-trajectories defined on the integrable function space of arbitrary exponent and on the unbounded domain of arbitrary dimension.
In this work, we carry out the asymptotic analysis of the two dimensional convective Brinkman-Forchheimer (CBF) equations, which characterize the motion of incompressible fluid flows in a saturated porous medium. We establish the existence of a global attractor in both bounded (using compact embedding) and Poincaré domains (using asymptotic compactness property). In Poincaré domains, for $r=1,2$ and $3$, the estimates for Hausdorff as well as fractal dimensions of the global attractors are also obtained. We then show an upper semicontinuity of global attractors for the 2D CBF equations. We con…
In this work, we study continuity and topological structural stability of attractors for nonautonomous random differential equations obtained by small bounded random perturbations of autonomous semilinear problems. First, we study existence and permanence of unstable sets of hyperbolic solutions. Then, we use this to establish lower semicontinuity of nonautonomous random attractors and to show that the gradient structure persists under nonautonomous random perturbations. Finally, we apply the abstract results in a stochastic differential equation and in a damped wave equation with a perturbati…
We prove the existence and uniqueness of tempered random attractors for stochastic Reaction-Diffusion equations on unbounded domains with multiplicative noise and deterministic non-autonomous forcing. We establish the periodicity of the tempered attractors when the stochastic equations are forced by periodic functions. We further prove the upper semicontinuity of these attractors when the intensity of stochastic perturbations approaches zero.
