Let $Λ^{\mathbb{R}}$ denote the linear space over $\mathbb{R}$ spanned by $z^{k}$, $k \! \in \! \mathbb{Z}$. Define the real inner product (with varying exponential weights) $\langle \boldsymbol{\cdot},\boldsymbol{\cdot} \rangle_{\mathscr{L}} \colon Λ^{\mathbb{R}} \times Λ^{\mathbb{R}} \! \to \! \mathbb{R}$, $(f,g) \! \mapsto \! \int_{\mathbb{R}}f(s)g(s) \exp (-\mathscr{N} \, V(s)) \, ds$, $\mathscr{N} \! \in \! \mathbb{N}$, where the external field $V$ satisfies: (i) $V$ is real analytic on $\mathbb{R} \setminus \{0\}$; (ii) $\lim_{\vert x \vert \to \infty}(V(x)/\ln (x^{2} \! + \! 1)) \! = \! +\infty$; and (iii) $\lim_{\vert x \vert \to 0}(V(x)/\ln (x^{-2} \! + \! 1)) \! = \! +\infty$. Asymptotics in the double-scaling limit as $\mathscr{N},n \! \to \! \infty$ such that $\mathscr{N}/n \! = \! 1 \! + \! o(1)$ of $ξ^{(2n)}_{n}$ and $ϕ_{2n} (z)$ (in the entire complex plane) are obtained by formulating the even degree orthonormal Laurent polynomial problem as a matrix Riemann-Hilbert problem on $\mathbb{R}$, and then extracting the large-$n$ behaviour by applying the Deift-Zhou non-linear steepest-descent method in conjunction with the extension of Deift-Venakides-Zhou.
The Askey-Wilson polynomials are orthogonal polynomials in $x = \cos θ$, which are given as a terminating $_4ϕ_3$ basic hypergeometric series. The non-symmetric Askey-Wilson polynomials are Laurent polynomials in $z=e^{iθ}$, which are given as a sum of two terminating $_4ϕ_3$'s. They satisfy a biorthogonality relation. In this paper new orthogonality relations for single $_4ϕ_3$'s which are Laurent polynomials in $z$ are given, which imply the non-symmetric Askey-Wilson biorthogonality. These results include discrete orthogonality relations. They can be considered as a classical analytic study…
Orthogonal Laurent polynomials in the unit circle and the theory of Toda-like integrable systems are connected using the Gauss--Borel factorization of a Cantero-Moral-Velazquez moment matrix, which is constructed in terms of a complex quasi-definite measure supported in the unit circle. The factorization of the moment matrix leads to orthogonal Laurent polynomials in the unit circle and the corresponding second kind functions. Jacobi operators, 5-term recursion relations and Christoffel-Darboux kernels, projecting to particular spaces of truncated Laurent polynomials, and corresponding Christo…
An ordering for Laurent polynomials in the algebraic torus $(\mathbb C^*)^D$, inspired by the Cantero-Moral-Velázquez approach to orthogonal Laurent polynomials in the unit circle, leads to the construction of a moment matrix for a given Borel measure in the unit torus $\mathbb T^D$. The Gauss-Borel factorization of this moment matrix allows for the construction of multivariate biorthogonal Laurent polynomials in the unit torus which can be expressed as last quasi-determinants of bordered truncations of the moment matrix. Christoffel type perturbations of the measure given by the multiplicatio…
We introduce a spectral transform for the finite relativistic Toda lattice (RTL) in generalized form. In the nonrelativistic case, Moser constructed a spectral transform from the spectral theory of symmetric Jacobi matrices. Here we use a non-symmetric generalized eigenvalue problem for a pair of bidiagonal matrices (L,M) to define the spectral transform for the RTL. The inverse spectral transform is described in terms of a terminating T-fraction. The generalized eigenvalues are constants of motion and the auxiliary spectral data have explicit time evolution. Using the connection with the theo…
Matrix orthogonal Laurent polynomials in the unit circle and the theory of Toda-like integrable systems are connected using the Gauss--Borel factorization of two, left and a right, Cantero-Morales-Velazquez block moment matrices, which are constructed using a quasi-definite matrix measure. A block Gauss-Borel factorization problem of these moment matrices leads to two sets of biorthogonal matrix orthogonal Laurent polynomials and matrix Szegő polynomials, which can be expressed in terms of Schur complements of bordered truncations of the block moment matrix. The corresponding block extension o…
A formulation is given for the spectral transformation of the generalized eigenvalue problem through the decomposition of the second-order differential operators. This allows us to construct some Laurent biorthogonal polynomial systems with gaps in the degree of the polynomial sequence. These correspond to an exceptional-type extension of the orthogonal polynomials, as an extension of the Laurent biorthogonal polynomials. Specifically, we construct the exceptional extension of the Hendriksen-van Rossum polynomials, which are biorthogonal analogs of the classical orthogonal polynomials. Similar…
Laurent polynomials related to the Hahn-Exton $q$-Bessel function, which are $q$-analogues of the Lommel polynomials, have been introduced by Koelink and Swarttouw. The explicit strong moment functional with respect to which the Laurent $q$-Lommel polynomials are orthogonal is given. The strong moment functional gives rise to two positive definite moment functionals. For the corresponding sets of orthogonal polynomials the orthogonality measure is determined using the three-term recurrence relation as a starting point. The relation between Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind and the Laure…
Let $Λ^{\mathbb{R}}$ denote the linear space over $\mathbb{R}$ spanned by $z^{k}$, $k \in \mathbb{Z}$. Orthogonalisation of the (ordered) base $\lbrace 1,z^{-1},z,z^{-2},z^{2}, >...c,z^{-k},z^{k},...c \rbrace$ with respect to the real inner product $(f,g) \mapsto \int_{\mathbb{R}}f(s)g(s) \exp (-\mathscr{N} V(s)) \md s$, $\mathscr{N} \in \mathbb{N}$, where $V$ is real analytic on $\mathbb{R} \setminus \{0\}$, $\lim_{| x | \to \infty}(V(x)/ \ln (x^{2} + 1)) = +\infty$, and $\lim_{| x | \to 0} (V(x)/\ln (x^{-2} + 1)) = +\infty$, yields the even degree and odd degree orthonormal Laurent polynomials (OLPs), $ϕ_{2n}(z) = \sum_{k=-n}^{n} ξ^{(2n)}_{k}z^{k}$, with $ξ^{(2n)}_{n} > 0$, and $ϕ_{2n+1}(z) =…
We show that Laurent biorthogonal polynomials whose defining three-term recurrence have constant coefficients have coefficient arrays that are Riordan arrays. For each such family of Laurent biorthogonal polynomials we associate in a natural way a family of orthogonal polynomials. We also extend these results to a notion of generalized orthogonal polynomials whose recurrence depends on three parameters.
Let $f(z) = \sum_{k=0}^\infty d_k z^k$, $d_k\in\mathbb{C}\backslash\{ 0 \}$, $d_0=1$, be a power series with a non-zero radius of convergence $ρ$: $0 <ρ\leq +\infty$. Denote by $f_n(z)$ the n-th partial sum of $f$, and $R_{2n}(z) = \frac{ f_{2n}(z) }{ z^n }$, $R_{2n+1}(z) = \frac{ f_{2n+1}(z) }{ z^{n+1} }$, $n=0,1,2,...$. By the result of Hendriksen and Van Rossum there exists a linear functional $\mathbf{L}$ on Laurent polynomials, such that $\mathbf{L}(R_n R_m) = 0$, when $n\not= m$, while $\mathbf{L}(R_n^2)\not= 0$. We present an explicit integral representation for $\mathbf{L}$ in the abov…
Let there be given a probability measure $μ$ on the unit circle $\TT$ of the complex plane and consider the inner product induced by $μ$. In this paper we consider the problem of orthogonalizing a sequence of monomials $\{z^{r_k}\}_k$, for a certain order of the $r_k\in\mathbb{Z}$, by means of the Gram-Schmidt orthogonalization process. This leads to a basis of orthonormal Laurent polynomials $\{ψ_k\}_k$. We show that the matrix representation with respect to the basis $\{ψ_k\}_k$ of the operator of multiplication by $z$ is an infinite unitary or isometric matrix allowing a 'snake-shaped' matr…
It is shown that monic orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle are the characteristic polynomials of certain five-diagonal matrices depending on the Schur parameters. This result is achieved through the study of orthogonal Laurent polynomials on the unit circle. More precisely, it is a consequence of the five term recurrence relation obtained for these orthogonal Laurent polynomials, and the one to one correspondence established between them and the orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle. As an application, some results relating the behavior of the zeros of orthogonal polynomials and the …
A classical result due to Bochner classifies the orthogonal polynomials on the real line which are common eigenfunctions of a second order linear differential operator. We settle a natural version of the Bochner problem on the unit circle which answers a similar question concerning orthogonal Laurent polynomials and can be formulated as a bispectral problem involving CMV matrices. We solve this CMV bispectral problem in great generality proving that, except the Lebesgue measure, no other one on the unit circle yields a sequence of orthogonal Laurent polynomials which are eigenfunctions of a li…
Quasidefinite sesquilinear forms for Laurent polynomials in the complex plane and corresponding CMV biorthogonal Laurent polynomial families are studied. Bivariate linear functionals encompass large families of orthogonalities like Sobolev and discrete Sobolev types. Two possible Christoffel transformations of these linear functionals are discussed. Either the linear functionals are multiplied by a Laurent polynomial, or are multiplied by the complex conjugate of a Laurent polynomial. For the Geronimus transformation, the linear functional is perturbed in two possible manners as well, by a div…
This paper is a continuation of the recent paper "CMV biorthogonal Laurent polynomials: Christoffel formulas for Christoffel and Geronimus transformations" by the same authors. The behavior of quasidefinite sesquilinear forms for Laurent polynomials in the complex plane, characterized by bivariate linear functionals, and corresponding CMV biorthogonal Laurent polynomial families --including Sobolev and discrete Sobolev orthogonalities--- under two type of Geronimus--Uvarov transformations is studied. Either the linear functionals are multiplied by a Laurent polynomial and divided by the comple…
Using the technique of the elliptic Frobenius determinant, we construct new elliptic solutions of the $QD$-algorithm. These solutions can be interpreted as elliptic solutions of the discrete-time Toda chain as well. As a by-product, we obtain new explicit orthogonal and biorthogonal polynomials in terms of the elliptic hypergeometric function ${_3}E_2(z)$. Their recurrence coefficients are expressed in terms of the elliptic functions. In the degenerate case we obtain the Krall-Jacobi polynomials and their biorthogonal analogs.
Recursive algebraic construction of two infinite families of polynomials in $n$ variables is proposed as a uniform method applicable to every semisimple Lie group of rank $n$. Its result recognizes Chebyshev polynomials of the first and second kind as the special case of the simple group of type $A_1$. The obtained not Laurent-type polynomials are proved to be equivalent to the partial cases of the Macdonald symmetric polynomials. Basic relation between the polynomials and their properties follow from the corresponding properties of the orbit functions, namely the orthogonality and discretizat…
Szego's procedure to connect orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle and orthogonal polynomials on [-1,1] is generalized to nonsymmetric measures. It generates the so-called semi-orthogonal functions on the linear space of Laurent polynomials L, and leads to a new orthogonality structure in the module LxL. This structure can be interpreted in terms of a 2x2 matrix measure on [-1,1], and semi-orthogonal functions provide the corresponding sequence of orthogonal matrix polynomials. This gives a connection between orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle and certain classes of matrix orthogona…
We study a family of the Laurent biorthogonal polynomials arising from the Hermite continued fraction for a ratio of two complete elliptic integrals. Recurrence coefficients, explicit expression and the weight function for these polynomials are obtained. We construct also a new explicit example of the Szegö polynomials orthogonal on the unit circle. Relations with associated Legendre polynomials are considered.
Given $K$ arbitrary poles, which are neither necessarily distinct nor bounded, on the extended real line, a corresponding ordered base of rational functions orthogonal with respect to varying exponential weights is constructed: this gives rise to a $K$-fold family of orthogonal rational functions (ORFs). The ORF problem is characterised as a family of $K$ matrix Riemann-Hilbert problems (RHPs) on the extended real line, and a corresponding family of $K$ energy minimisation (variational) problems containing external fields with singular points is formulated, and the existence, uniqueness, and r…
The aim of this paper is to construct sup-exponentially localized kernels and frames in the context of classical orthogonal expansions, namely, expansions in Jacobi polynomials, spherical harmonics, orthogonal polynomials on the ball and simplex, and Hermite and Laguerre functions.
We give several descriptions of positive quadrature formulas which are exact for trigonometric -, respectively, Laurent polynomials of degree less or equal $n-1-m$, $0\leq m\leq n-1$. A complete and simple description is obtained with the help of orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle. In particular it is shown that the nodes polynomial can be generated by a simple recurrence relation. As a byproduct interlacing properties of zeros of para-orthogonal polynomials are obtained. Finally, asymptotics for the quadrature weights are presented.
New sequences of orthogonal polynomials with ultra-exponential weight functions are discovered. In particular, it gives an explicit solution to the Ditkin-Prudnikov problem (1966). The 3-term recurrence relations, explicit representations, generating functions and Rodrigues type formulae are derived. The method is based on differential properties of the involved special functions and their representations in terms of the Mellin-Barnes and Laplace integrals. A notion of the composition polynomial orthogonality is introduced. The corresponding advantages of this orthogonality to discover new seq…
Nonsymmetric Askey-Wilson polynomials are usually written as Laurent polynomials. We write them equivalently as 2-vector-valued symmetric Laurent polynomials. Then the Dunkl-Cherednik operator of which they are eigenfunctions, is represented as a 2x2 matrix-valued operator. As a new result made possible by this approach we obtain positive definiteness of the inner product in the orthogonality relations, under certain constraints on the parameters. A limit transition to nonsymmetric little q-Jacobi polynomials also becomes possible in this way. Nonsymmetric Jacobi polynomials are considered as …
Starting from the moment sequences of classical orthogonal polynomials we derive the orthogonality purely algebraically. We consider also the moments of ($q=1$) classical orthogonal polynomials, and study those cases in which the exponential generating function has a nice form. In the opposite direction, we show that the generalized Dumont-Foata polynomials with six parameters are the moments of rescaled continuous dual Hahn polynomials. Finally we show that one of our methods can be applied to deal with the moments of Askey-Wilson polynomials.
In the paper, the authors verify the complete monotonicity of the difference $e^{1/t}-ψ'(t)$ on $(0,\infty)$, compute the completely monotonic degree and establish integral representations of the remainder of the Laurent series expansion of $e^{1/z}$, and derive an inequality which gives a lower bound for the first order modified Bessel function of the first kind.
We consider multiple orthogonal polynomials associated with the exponential cubic weight e^{-x^3} over two contours in the complex plane. We study the basic properties of these polynomials, including the Rodrigues formula and nearest-neighbor recurrence relations. It turns out that the recurrence coefficients are related to a discrete Painlevé equation. The asymptotics of the recurrence coefficients, the ratio of the diagonal multiple orthogonal polynomials and the (scaled) zeros of these polynomials are also investigated.
We review recent results on necessary and sufficient conditions for measures on $\mathbb{R}$ and $\partial\mathbb{D}$ to yield exponential decay of the recursion coefficients of the corresponding orthogonal polynomials. We include results on the relation of detailed asymptotics of the recursion coefficients to detailed analyticity of the measures. We present an analog of Carmona's formula for OPRL. A major role is played by the Szego and Jost functions.
We study the asymptotics of recurrence coefficients for monic orthogonal polynomials $π_n(z)$ with the quartic exponential weight $\exp[-N(\frac 12 z^2+\frac 14 tz^4)]$, where $t\in {\mathbb C}$ and $N\in{\mathbb N}$, $N\to\infty$. Our goal is to describe these asymptotic behaviors globally for $t\in {\mathbb C}$ in different regions. We also describe the "breaking" curves separating these regions, and discuss their special (critical) points. All these pieces of information combined provide the global asymptotic "phase portrait" of the recurrence coefficients of $π_n(z)$, which was studied num…
We study the limiting zero distribution of orthogonal polynomials with respect to some particular exponential weights exp(-nV(z)) along contours in the complex plane. We are especially interested in the question under which circumstances the zeros of the orthogonal polynomials accumulate on a single analytic arc (one cut case), and in which cases they do not. In a family of cubic polynomial potentials V(z) = - iz^3/3 + iKz, we determine the precise values of K for which we have the one cut case. We also prove the one cut case for a monomial quintic V(z) = - iz^5/5 on a contour that is symmetri…
The exponential orthogonal polynomials encode via the theory of hyponormal operators a shade function $g$ supported by a bounded planar shape. We prove under natural regularity assumptions that these complex polynomials satisfy a three term relation if and only if the underlying shape is an ellipse carrying uniform black on white. More generally, we show that a finite term relation among these orthogonal polynomials holds if and only if the first row in the associated Hessenberg matrix has finite support. This rigidity phenomenon is in sharp contrast with the theory of classical complex orthog…
Suppose $Λ\subseteq \RR^2$ has the property that any two exponentials with frequency from $Λ$ are orthogonal in the space $L^2(D)$, where $D \subseteq \RR^2$ is the unit disk. Such sets $Λ$ are known to be finite but it is not known if their size is uniformly bounded. We show that if there are two elements of $Λ$ which are distance $t$ apart then the size of $Λ$ is $O(t)$. As a consequence we improve a result of Iosevich and Jaming and show that $Λ$ has at most $O(R^{2/3})$ elements in any disk of radius $R$.
We give families of examples where sharp rates of convergence to stationarity of the widely used Gibbs sampler are available. The examples involve standard exponential families and their conjugate priors. In each case, the transition operator is explicitly diagonalizable with classical orthogonal polynomials as eigenfunctions.
This paper is devoted to the study of general (Laurent) polynomial modifications of moment functionals on the unit circle, i.e., associated with hermitian Toeplitz matrices. We present a new approach which allows us to study polynomial modifications of arbitrary degree. The main objective is the characterization of the quasi-definiteness of the functionals involved in the problem in terms of a difference equation relating the corresponding Schur parameters. The results are presented in the general framework of (non necessarily quasi-definite) hermitian functionals, so that the maximum number o…
A long-standing open problem in harmonic analysis is: given a non-negative measure $μ$ on $\mathbb R$, find the infimal width of frequencies needed to approximate any function in $L^2(μ)$. We consider this problem in the "perturbative regime", and characterize asymptotic smallness of perturbations of measures which do not change that infimal width. Then we apply this result to show that there are no local restrictions on the structure of orthogonal spectral measures of one-dimensional Schrodinger operators on a finite interval. This answers a question raised by V.A.Marchenko.
We develop a theory of Darboux transformations for CMV matrices, canonical representations of the unitary operators. In perfect analogy with their self-adjoint version -- the Darboux transformations of Jacobi matrices -- they are equivalent to Laurent polynomial modifications of the underlying measures. We address other questions which emphasize the similarities between Darboux transformations for Jacobi and CMV matrices, like their (almost) isospectrality or the relation that they establish between the corresponding orthogonal polynomials, showing also that both transformations are connected …
Let $(p_n)_n$ be a sequence of orthogonal polynomials with respect to the measure $μ$. Let $T$ be a linear operator acting in the linear space of polynomials $\PP$ and satisfying that $\dgr(T(p))=\dgr(p)-1$, for all polynomial $p$. We then construct a sequence of polynomials $(s_n)_n$, depending on $T$ but not on $μ$, such that the Wronskian type $n\times n$ determinant $\det \left(T^{i-1}(p_{m+j-1}(x))\right)_{i,j=1}^n$ is equal to the $m\times m$ determinant $\det \left(q^{j-1}_{n+i-1}(x)\right)_{i,j=1}^m$, up to multiplicative constants, where the polynomials $q_n^i$, $n,i\ge 0$, are define…
We develop a new asymptotic method for the analysis of matrix Riemann-Hilbert problems. Our method is a generalization of the steepest descent method first proposed by Deift and Zhou; however our method systematically handles jump matrices that need not be analytic. The essential technique is to introduce nonanalytic extensions of certain functions appearing in the jump matrix, and to therefore convert the Riemann-Hilbert problem into a dbar problem. We use our method to study several asymptotic problems of polynomials orthogonal with respect to a measure given on the unit circle, obtaining ne…
We consider orthogonal polynomials $\{p_{n,N}(x)\}_{n=0}^{\infty}$ on the real line with respect to a weight $w(x)=e^{-NV(x)}$ and in particular the asymptotic behaviour of the coefficients $a_{n,N}$ and $b_{n,N}$ in the three term recurrence $x π_{n,N}(x) = π_{n+1,N}(x) + b_{n,N} π_{n,N}(x) + a_{n,N} π_{n-1,N}(x)$. For one-cut regular $V$ we show, using the Deift-Zhou method of steepest descent for Riemann-Hilbert problems, that the diagonal recurrence coefficients $a_{n,n}$ and $b_{n,n}$ have asymptotic expansions as $n \to \infty$ in powers of $1/n^2$ and powers of $1/n$, respectively.
Sigmoid functions play an important role in many areas of applied mathematics, including machine learning, population dynamics and probability. We place the study of sigmoid functions in the context of the derivative sub-group of the group of exponential Riordan arrays. Links to families of polynomials are drawn, and it is shown that in some cases these polynomials are orthogonal. In the non-orthogonal case, transformations are given that produce orthgonal systems. Alternative means of characterisation are given, based on the production (Stieltjes) matrix associated to the relevant Riordan arr…
Let $A$ be a countable and discrete subset of ${\Bbb R}^d$, $d \ge 2$, of positive upper Beurling density. Let $K$ denote a bounded symmetric convex set with a smooth boundary and everywhere non-vanishing Gaussian curvature. It is known that ${\mathcal E}(A)=\{e^{2 πi x \cdot a}\}_{a \in A}$ cannot serve as an orthogonal basis for $L^2(K)$ \cite{IKT01}. In this paper, we prove that even approximate average orthogonality is an obstacle to the existence of an exponential frame in the following sense. Let $A$ be as above and $ϕ\ge 0$ be a continuous monotonically nonincreasing function on $[0, \i…
Following Verde-Star, Linear Algebra Appl. 627 (2021), we label families of orthogonal polynomials in the $q$-Askey scheme together with their $q$-hypergeometric representations by three sequences $x_k, h_k, g_k$ of Laurent polynomials in $q^k$, two of degree 1 and one of degree 2, satisfying certain constraints. This gives rise to a precise classification and parametrization of these families together with their limit transitions. This is displayed in a graphical scheme. We also describe the four-manifold structure underlying the scheme.
In this paper, we obtain the ladder operators and associated compatibility conditions for the type I and the type II multiple orthogonal polynomials. These ladder equations extend known results for orthogonal polynomials and can be used to derive the differential equations satisfied by multiple orthogonal polynomials. Our approach is based on Riemann-Hilbert problems and the Christoffel-Darboux formula for multiple orthogonal polynomials, and the nearest-neighbor recurrence relations. As an illustration, we give several explicit examples involving multiple Hermite and Laguerre polynomials, and…
Orthogonal polynomials on quadratic curves in the plane are studied. These include orthogonal polynomials on ellipses, parabolas, hyperbolas, and two lines. For an integral with respect to an appropriate weight function defined on any quadratic curve, an explicit basis of orthogonal polynomials is constructed in terms of two families of orthogonal polynomials in one variable. Convergence of the Fourier orthogonal expansions is also studied in each case. As an application, we see that the resulting bases can be used to interpolate functions on the real line with singularities of the form $|x|$,…
