This paper is concerned with the relationships between two concepts, vanishing of cohomology groups and the structure of free resolutions. In particular, we study the connection between vanishing theorems for the local cohomology of multigraded modules and the structure of their free multigraded resolutions.
We relate the set of complete reduction vectors of a $\mathbb{Z}^s$-graded admissible filtration of ideals $\mathcal{F}$ with the set of multigraded regularities of $G(\mathcal{F}).$ We prove reg$(G(\mathcal{F}))$=reg$(\mathcal{R}(\mathcal{F})).$ We establish a relation between the sets of complete reduction vectors of $\mathcal{F}$ and postulation vectors of $\mathcal{F}$ under some cohomological conditions.
In recent years, two different multigraded variants of Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity have been developed, namely multigraded regularity, defined by the vanishing of multigraded pieces of local cohomology modules, and the resolution regularity vector, defined by the multidegrees in a minimal free resolution. In this paper, we study the relationship between multigraded regularity and the resolution regularity vector. Our method is to investigate multigraded variants of the usual a*-invariant. This, in particular, provides an effective approach to examining the vanishing of multigraded pieces of…
This paper gives a sharp upper bound for the Betti numbers of a finitely generated multigraded $R$-module, where $R=\Bbbk [x_{1},...,x_{m}]$ is the polynomial ring over a field $\Bbbk$ in $m$ variables. The bound is given in terms of the rank and the first two Betti numbers of the module. An example is given which achieves these bounds simultaneously in each homological degree. Using Alexander duality, a bound is established for the total multigraded Bass numbers of a finite multigraded module in terms of the first two total multigraded Bass numbers.
Let $A$ be a Noetherian standard $\mathbb{N}$-graded algebra over an Artinian local ring $A_0$. Let $I_1,\ldots,I_t$ be homogeneous ideals of $A$ and $M$ a finitely generated $\mathbb{N}$-graded $A$-module. We prove that there exist two integers $k$ and $k'$ such that \[ \mathrm{reg}(I_1^{n_1} \cdots I_t^{n_t} M) \leq (n_1 + \cdots + n_t) k + k' \quad\mbox{for all }~n_1,\ldots,n_t \in \mathbb{N}. \]
In this paper we study some cohomological properties of non-standard multigraded modules and Veronese transforms of them. Among others numerical characters, we study the generalized depth of a module and we see that it is invariant by taking a Veronese transform. We prove some vanishing theorems for the local cohomology modules of a multigraded module; as a corollary of these results we get that the depth of a Veronese module is asymptotically constant.
In this paper, we introduce the multigraded modules of Borel type and extend several results from the theory of ideals of Borel type. We prove that modules of Borel type are sequentially Cohen Macaulay and pretty clean. Also, we give a formula for the regularity of modules of Borel type.
Let S be a standard N^k-graded polynomial ring over a field. Let I be a multigraded homogeneous ideal in S and let M be a finitely generated Z^k-graded S-module. We prove that the resolution regularity, a multigraded variant of Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity, of I^nM is asymptotically a linear function. This shows that the well known Z-graded phenomenon carries to multigraded situation.
Let $R=\Bbbk[x_1,\..., x_n]$ and $M=R^s/I$ a multigraded squarefree module. We discuss the construction of cochain complexes associated to $M$ and we show how to interpret homological invariants of $M$ in terms of topological computations. This is a generalization of the well studied case of squarefree monomial ideals.
The Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of a graded ring is an important invariant in computational commutative algebra, and there is increasing interest in multigraded generalizations. We study connections between two recent definitions of multigraded regularity with a view towards a better understanding of the multigraded Hilbert function of fat point schemes in P^{n_1} x ... x P^{n_k}.
We introduce an exact functor defined on multigraded modules which we call the expansion functor and study its homological properties. The expansion functor applied to a monomial ideal amounts to substitute the variables by monomial prime ideals and to apply this substitution to the generators of the ideal. This operation naturally occurs in various combinatorial contexts.
We give a criterion for the section ring of an ample line bundle to be Koszul in terms of multigraded regularity. We discuss an application to polytopal semigroup rings.
We study the linear space generated by the multigraded Betti diagrams of Z^n-graded artinian modules of codimension n whose resolutions become pure of a given type when taking total degrees. We show that the multigraded Betti diagram of the equivariant resolution constructed by D.Eisenbud, J.Weyman, and the author, and all its twists, form a basis for this linear space.
$V$ is a complete intersection scheme in a multiprojective space if it can be defined by an ideal $I$ with as many generators as $\textrm{codim}(V)$. We investigate the multigraded regularity of complete intersections scheme in $\mathbb{P}^n\times \mathbb{P}^m$. We explicitly compute many values of the Hilbert functions of $0$-dimensional complete intersections. We show that these values only depend upon $n,m$, and the bidegrees of the generators of $I$. As a result, we provide a sharp upper bound for the multigraded regularity of $0$-dimensional complete intersections.
We develop a multigraded variant of Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity. Motivated by toric geometry, we work with modules over a polynomial ring graded by a finitely generated abelian group. As in the standard graded case, our definition of multigraded regularity involves the vanishing of graded components of local cohomology. We establish the key properties of regularity: its connection with the minimal generators of a module and its behavior in exact sequences. For an ideal sheaf on a simplicial toric variety X, we prove that its multigraded regularity bounds the equations that cut out the assoc…
In this article, we give a condition on the vanishing of finitely many homogeneous components which must imply the asymptotic vanishing for multigraded modules. We apply our result to multi-Rees algebras of ideals. As a consequence, we obtain a result on normality of monomial ideals, which extends and improves the results of Reid-Roberts-Vitulli, Singla, and Sarkar-Verma.
Let $R=\Bbbk[x_1,...,x_m]$ be the polynomial ring over a field $\Bbbk$ with the standard $\mathbb Z^m$-grading (multigrading), let $L$ be a Noetherian multigraded $R$-module, let $β_{i,α}(L)$ the $i$th (multigraded) Betti number of $L$ of multidegree $\a$. We introduce the notion of a generic (relative to $L$) multidegree, and the notion of multigraded module of generic type. When the multidegree $\a$ is generic (relative to $L$) we provide a Hochster-type formula for $β_{i,α}(L)$ as the dimension of the reduced homology of a certain simplicial complex associated with $L$. This allows us to sh…
We give an effective uniform bound on the multigraded regularity of a subscheme of a smooth projective toric variety X with a given multigraded Hilbert polynomial. To establish this bound, we introduce a new combinatorial tool, called a Stanley filtration, for studying monomial ideals in the homogeneous coordinate ring of X. As a special case, we obtain a new proof of Gotzmann's regularity theorem. We also discuss applications of this bound to the construction of multigraded Hilbert schemes.
In this paper, we consider $\mathbb{Z}^{r}-$graded modules on the $\mathrm{Cl}(X)$ $-$graded Cox ring $\mathbb{C}[x_{1},\dotsc,x_{r}]$ of a smooth complete toric variety $X$. Using the theory of Klyachko filtrations in the reflexive case, we construct a collection of lattice polytopes codifying the multigraded Hilbert function of the module. We apply this approach to reflexive $\mathbb{Z}^{s+r+2}$-graded modules over non-standard bigraded polynomial rings $\mathbb{C}[x_{0},\dotsc,x_{s},y_{0},\dotsc,y_{r}]$. In this case, we give sharp bounds for the multigraded regularity index of their multig…
We define a functor $\rr^\ast$ from the category of positively determined modules to the category of squarefree modules which plays the role of passing from a monomial ideal to its radical. By using this functor, we generalize several results on properties that are shared by a monomial ideal and its radical. Moreover, we study the connection of $\rr^\ast$ to the Alexander duality and Auslander-Reiten translate functor.
We define "sliding functors", which are exact endofunctors of the category of multi-graded modules over a polynomial ring. They preserve several invariants of modules, especially the (usual) depth and Stanley depth. In a similar way, we can also define the "polarization functor". While this idea has appeared in papers of Bruns-Herzog and Sbarra, we give slightly different approach. Keeping these functors in mind, we treat simplicial spheres of Bier-Murai type.
Let $R=\Bbbk [x_1,..., x_m]$ be a polynomial ring in $m$ variables over $\Bbbk$ with the standard $\mathbb{Z}^m$ grading and $L$ a multigraded Noetherian $R$-module. When $\Bbbk$ is a field, Tchernev has an explicit construction of a multigraded free resolution called the T-resolution of $L$ over $R$. Despite the explicit canonical description, this method uses linear algebraic methods, which makes the structure hard to understand. This paper gives a combinatorial description for the free modules, making the T-resolution clearer. In doing so, we must introduce an ordering on the elements. This…
We apply Miller's theory on multigraded modules over a polynomial ring to the study of the Stanley depth of these modules. Several tools for Stanley's conjecture are developed, and a few partial answers are given. For example, we show that taking the Alexander duality twice (but with different "centers") is useful for this subject. Generalizing a result of Apel, we prove that Stanley's conjecture holds for the quotient by a cogeneric monomial ideal.
Using multigraded Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity, we study the equations defining a projective embedding of a variety X. Given globally generated line bundles B_1, ..., B_k on X and integers m_1, ..., m_k, consider the line bundle L := B_1^m_1 \otimes ... \otimes B_k^m_k. We give conditions on the m_i which guarantee that the ideal of X in P(H^0(X,L)) is generated by quadrics and the first p syzygies are linear. This yields new results on the syzygies of toric varieties and the normality of polytopes.
Let S = k[x_1,...,x_n] be a Z^r-graded ring with deg (x_i) = a_i \in Z^r for each i and suppose that M is a finitely generated Z^r-graded S-module. In this paper we describe how to find finite subsets of Z^r containing the multidegrees of the minimal multigraded syzygies of M. To find such a set, we first coarsen the grading of M so that we can view M as a Z-graded S-module. We use a generalized notion of Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity, which was introduced by D. Maclagan and G. Smith, to associate to M a number which we call the regularity number of M. The minimal degrees of the multigraded m…
A $\mathbb{Z}^d$-graded differential $R$-module is a $\mathbb{Z}^d$-graded $R$-module $D$ equipped with an endomorphism, $δ$, that squares to zero. For $R=k[x_1,\ldots,x_d]$, this paper establishes a lower bound on the rank of such a differential module when the underlying R-module is free. We define the Betti number of a differential module and use it to show that when the homology $H(D)=\mathrm{ker}(δ)/\mathrm{im}(δ)$ of $D$ is non-zero and finite dimensional over $k$ then there is an inequality $\mathrm{rank}_R D \geqslant 2^d$.
The Stanley's Conjecture on Cohen-Macaulay multigraded modules is studied especially in dimension 2. In codimension 2 similar results were obtained by Herzog, Soleyman-Jahan and Yassemi. As a consequence of our results Stanley's Conjecture holds in 5 variables.
Let $ R=k[x_1...x_r]$ and $M$ a multigraded $R-$module. In this work we interpret $M$ as a multipersistent homology module and give a multigraded resolution of it. The construction involves cellular resolutions of monomial ideals and reflects the combinatorial structure of multipersistence homology modules. In the one critical case, a multifiltration is represented by a labelled cellular complex. A multipersistence homology module measures the defect of acyclicity of the associated multigraded cellular chain complex.
We show that the Stanley's conjecture holds for any multigraded $S$-module $M$ with $\sdepth(M)=0$, where $S=K[x_1,...,x_n]$. Also, we give some bounds for the Stanley depth of the powers of the maximal irrelevant ideal in $S$.
A method for computing the multigraded Hilbert depth of a module was presented in [16]. In this paper we improve the method and we introduce an effective algorithm for performing the computations. In a particular case, the algorithm may also be easily adapted for computing the Stanley depth of the module. We further present interesting examples which were found with the help of an experimental implementation of the algorithm. Thus, we completely solve several open problems proposed by Herzog in [12].
The aim of this paper is to introduce a method for computing Hilbert decompositions (and consequently the Hilbert depth) of a finitely generated multigraded module $M$ over the polynomial ring $K[X_1,..., X_n]$ by reducing the problem to the computation of the finite set of the new defined Hilbert partitions. Moreover, in the last section, we show that Hilbert partitions may also be used for computing the Stanley depth of the module $M$.
Let S be a standard N^r-graded algebra over a local ring A, and let M be a finitely generated Z^r-graded S-module. We characterize the Cohen-Macaulayness of M in terms of the vanishing of certain sheaf cohomology modules. As a consequence, we apply our result to study the Cohen-Macaulayness of multi-Rees modules (also called Rees modification). Our work extends previous studies on the Cohen-Macaulayness of multi-Rees algebras.
In this article we extend a previous definition of Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity for modules over an algebra graded by a finitely generated abelian group. Our notion of regularity is based on Maclagan and Smith's definition, and is extended first by working over any commutative base ring, and second by considering local cohomology with support in an arbitrary finitely generated graded ideal $B$, obtaining, for each $B$, a $B$-regularity region. The first extension provides a natural approach for working with families of sheaves or of graded modules, while the second opens new applications. We…
Let K be a field, let R=K[x_1,..., x_m] be a polynomial ring with the standard Z^m-grading (multigrading), let L be a Noetherian multigraded R-module, and let F: E --> G be a finite free multigraded presentation of L over R. Given a choice S of a multihomogeneous basis of E, we construct an explicit canonical finite free multigraded resolution T(F, S) of the R-module L. In the case of monomial ideals our construction recovers the Taylor resolution. A main ingredient of our work is a new linear algebra construction of independent interest, which produces from a representation f over K of a matr…
Let $R=\bigoplus_{\underline{n} \in \mathbb{N}^t}R_{\underline{n}}$ be a commutative Noetherian $\mathbb{N}^t$-graded ring, and $L = \bigoplus_{\underline{n}\in\mathbb{N}^t}L_{\underline{n}}$ be a finitely generated $\mathbb{N}^t$-graded $R$-module. We prove that there exists a positive integer $k$ such that for any $\underline{n} \in \mathbb{N}^t$ with $L_{\underline{n}} \neq 0$, there exists a primary decomposition of the zero submodule $O_{\underline{n}}$ of $L_{\underline{n}}$ such that for any $P \in {\rm Ass}_{R_0}(L_{\underline{n}})$, the $P$-primary component $Q$ in that primary decomp…
Notions of Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity and of $a^*$ invariant were extended from standard graded algebras to the toric setting. We here focus our attention on the standard multigraded case, which corresponds to a product of $k$ projective spaces. A natural notion for a $\mathbb Z^k$-graded module is its support: degrees in which it is not zero. A stabilized version of it is adding $-\mathbb N^k$, in order for the complement (vanishing region) to be stable by addition of $\mathbb N^k$. Cohomology of twists of a sheaf on a product of projective spaces, provided by a graded module, are given b…
This dissertation focuses on the following topics: (1) asymptotic prime divisors over complete intersection rings, (2) asymptotic stability of complexities over complete intersection rings, (3) asymptotic linear bounds of Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity in multigraded modules, and (4) characterizations of regular local rings via syzygy modules of the residue field.
Let $S$ be a finitely generated standard multigraded algebra over an Artinian local ring $A$; $M$ a finitely generated multigraded $S$-module. This paper answers to the question when mixed multiplicities of $M$ are positive and characterizes them in terms of lengths of $A$-modules. As an application, we get results on mixed multiplicities of ideals (Proposition 4.4 and Theorem 4.5), and recover the results of Risler and Teissier [Te](see Remark 4.8), Trung and Verma [TV](see Remark 4.6).
We study the linear map sending the numerator of the rational function representing the Hilbert series of a module to that of its r-th Veronese submodule. We show that the asymptotic behaviour as r tends to infinity depends on the multidegree of the module and the underlying positively multigraded polynomial ring. More importantly, we give a polyhedral description for the asymptotic polynomial and prove that the coefficients are log-concave. In particular, we extend some results by Beck-Stapledon and Diaconis-Fulman beyond the standard graded situation.
A fundamental tool in topological data analysis is persistent homology, which allows extraction of information from complex datasets in a robust way. Persistent homology assigns a module over a principal ideal domain to a one-parameter family of spaces obtained from the data. In applications data often depend on several parameters, and in this case one is interested in studying the persistent homology of a multiparameter family of spaces associated to the data. While the theory of persistent homology for one-parameter families is well-understood, the situation for multiparameter families is mo…
Maclagan and Smith \cite{MaclaganSmith} developed a multigraded version of Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity. Based on their definition we will prove in this paper that for a smooth curve $C\subseteq ¶^a\times¶^b$ $(a, b\geq 2)$ of bidegree $(d_1,d_2)$ with nondegenerate birational projections the ideal sheaf $\mathcal{I}_{C|¶^a\times¶^b}$ is $(d_2-b+1,d_1-a+1)$-regular. We also give an example showing that in some cases this bound is the best possible.
In commutative algebra, E. Miller and B. Sturmfels defined the notion of multidegree for multigraded modules over a multigraded polynomial ring. We apply this theory to bifiltered modules over the Weyl algebra D. The bifiltration is a combination of the standard filtration by the order of differential operators and of the so-called V-filtration along a coordinate subvariety of the ambient space defined by M. Kashiwara. The multidegree we define provides a new invariant for D-modules. We investigate its relation with the L-characteristic cycles considered by Y. Laurent. We give examples from th…
Bounds on the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of the associated graded modules of k-Buchsbaum modules M are given in terms of k and some other invariants of M.
We give bounds on the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of the associated graded module of an arbitrary good filtration and of its fiber cone. These bounds extend previous results of Rossi-Trung-Valla and Linh.
We find a combinatorial formula which computes the first cotangent cohomology module of Stanley-Reisner rings associated to matroids. For arbitrary simplicial complexes we provide upper bounds for the dimensions of the multigraded components of T^1. For specific degrees we prove that these bounds are reached if and only if the simplicial complex is a matroid, obtaining thus a new characterization for matroids. Furthermore, the graded first cotangent cohomology turns out to be a complete invariant for nondiscrete matroids.
An upper bound for the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of the associated graded module of an one-dimension module is given in term of its Hilbert coeffcients. It is also investigated when the bound is attained.
We show that the Castelnuovo--Mumford regularity of the canonical or a deficiency module of the quotient of a polynomial ring by a monomial ideal is bounded by its dimension.
We introduce the class of lattice-linear monomial ideals and use the LCM-lattice to give an explicit construction for their minimal free resolution. The class of lattice-linear ideals includes (among others) the class of monomial ideals with linear free resolution and the class of Scarf monomial ideals. Our main tool is a new construction by Tchernev that produces from a map of posets $η:P\lra\mbb{N}^n$ a sequence of multigraded modules and maps.
We estimate the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of ideals in a polynomial ring over a field by studying the regularity of certain modules generated in degree zero and with linear relations. In dimension one, this process gives a new type of upper bounds. By means of recursive techniques this also produces new upper bounds for ideals in any dimension.
We give two kinds of bounds for the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of the canonical module and the deficiency modules of a ring, respectively in terms of the homological degree and the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of the original ring.
In this work, we prove that if a graded, commutative algebra $R$ over a field $k$ is not Koszul then, denoting by $\mathfrak{m}$ the maximal homogeneous ideal of $R$ and by $M$ a finitely generated graded $R$-module, the nonzero modules of the form $\mathfrak{m} M$ have infinite Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity. We also prove that over complete intersections which are not Koszul, a nonzero direct summand of a syzygy of $k$ has infinite regularity. Finally, we relate the vanishing of the graded deviations of $R$ to having a nonzero direct summand of a syzygy of $k$ of finite regularity.
