Suppose that $ω\subsetΩ\subset R^2$. In the annular domain $A=Ω\setminus\barω$ we consider the class $J$ of complex valued maps having degree 1 on $\partial Ω$ and on $\partialω$.
It was conjectured by Berlyand and Mironescu ('04), that he existence of minimizers of the Ginzburg-Landau energy $E_κ$ in $J$ is completely determined by the value of the $H^1$-capacity $cap(A)$ of the domain and the value of the Ginzburg-Landau parameter $κ$.
The existence of minimizers of $E_κ$ for all $κ$ when $cap(A)\geqπ$ (domain $A$ is ``thin'') and for small $κ$ when $cap(A)<π$ (domain $A$ is ``thick'') was established by Berlyand and Mironescu ('04).
Here we provide the answer for the remaining case of large $κ$ when $cap(A)<π$. We prove that, when $cap(A)<π$, there exists a finite threshold value $κ_1$ of the Ginzburg-Landau parameter $κ$ such that the minimum of the Ginzburg-Landau energy $E_κ$ is not attained in $J$ when $κ>κ_1$ while it is attained when $κ<κ_1$.
We prove nonexistence of nonconstant global minimizers with limit at infinity of the semilinear elliptic equation $-Δu=f(u)$ in the whole $R^N$, where $f\in C^1(R)$ is a general nonlinearity and $N\geq 1$ is any dimension. As a corollary of this result, we establish nonexistence of nonconstant bounded radial global minimizers of the previous equation.
In this article we consider a variational problem related to a quasilinear singular problem and obtain a nonexistence result in a metric measure space with a doubling measure and a Poincaré inequality. Our method is purely variational and to the best of our knowledge, this is the first work concerning singular problems in a general metric setting.
We consider the nonexistence of minimizers for the energy containing a nonlocal perimeter with a general kernel $K$, a Riesz potential, and a background potential in $\mathbb{R}^N$ with $N\geq2$ under the volume constraint. We show that the energy has no minimizer for a sufficiently large mass under suitable assumptions on $K$. The proof is based on the partition of a minimizer and the comparison of the sum of the energy for each part with the energy for the original configuration. This strategy is shown in [R.A. Frank, R. Killip, P.T. Nam, 2016] and [D.A. La Manna, 2018]
We study minimizers of a Gross--Pitaevskii energy describing a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate confined in a radially symmetric harmonic trap and set into rotation. We consider the case of coexistence of the components in the Thomas-Fermi regime, where a small parameter $\ep$ conveys a singular perturbation. The minimizer of the energy without rotation is determined as the positive solution of a system of coupled PDE's for which we show uniqueness. The limiting problem for $\ep =0$ has degenerate and irregular behavior at specific radii, where the gradient blows up. By means of a pertur…
We study the ionization problem in the Thomas-Fermi-Dirac-von Weizsäcker theory for atoms and molecules. We prove the nonexistence of minimizers for the energy functional when the number of electrons is large and the total nuclear charge is small. This nonexistence result also applies to external potentials decaying faster than the Coulomb potential. In the case of arbitrary nuclear charges, we obtain the nonexistence of stable minimizers and radial minimizers.
We revisit the liquid drop model with a general Riesz potential. Our new result is the existence of minimizers for the conjectured optimal range of parameters. We also prove a conditional uniqueness of minimizers and a nonexistence result for heavy nuclei.
We consider the minimizers of $L^{2}$-critical inhomogeneous variational problems with a spatially decaying nonlinear term in an open bounded domain $Ω$ of $\mathbb{R}^{N}$ which contains $0$. We prove that there is a threshold $a^{*}>0$ such that minimizers exist for $0<a<a^{*}$ and the minimizer does not exist for any $a>a^{*}$. In contrast to the homogeneous case, we show that both the existence and nonexistence of minimizers may occur at the threshold $a^*$ depending on the value of $V(0)$, where $V(x)$ denotes the trapping potential. Moreover, under some suitable assumptions on $V(x)$, ba…
We study in detail the existence, nonexistence and behavior of global minimizers, ground states and corresponding energy levels of the $(p,q)$-Laplace equation $-Δ_p u -Δ_q u = α|u|^{p-2}u + β|u|^{q-2}u$ in a bounded domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^N$ under zero Dirichlet boundary condition, where $p > q > 1$ and $α, β\in \mathbb{R}$. A curve on the $(α,β)$-plane which allocates a set of the existence of ground states and the multiplicity of positive solutions is constructed. Additionally, we show that eigenfunctions of the $p$- and $q$-Laplacians under zero Dirichlet boundary condition are linear…
This article is devoted to studying the model of two-dimensional attractive Bose-Einstein condensates in a trap $V(x)$ rotating at the velocity $Ω$. This model can be described by the complex-valued Gross-Pitaevskii energy functional. It is shown that there exists a critical rotational velocity $0<Ω^*:=Ω^*(V)\leq \infty$, depending on the general trap $V(x)$, such that for any rotational velocity $0\leq Ω<Ω^*$, minimizers (i.e., ground states) exist if and only if $a<a^*=\|w\|^2_2$, where $a>0$ denotes the absolute product for the number of particles times the scattering length, and $w>0$ is t…
We consider, in a smooth bounded multiply connected domain $\dom\subset\R^2$, the Ginzburg-Landau energy $\d E_\v(u)=1/2\int_\dom{|\n u|^2}+\frac{1}{4\v^2}\int_\dom{(1-|u|^2)^2}$ subject to prescribed degree conditions on each component of $\p\dom$. In general, minimal energy maps do not exist \cite{BeMi1}. When $\dom$ has a single hole, Berlyand and Rybalko \cite{BeRy1} proved that for small $\v$ local minimizers do exist. We extend the result in \cite{BeRy1}: $\d E_\v(u)$ has, in domains $\dom$ with $2,3,...$ holes and for small $\v$, local minimizers. Our approach is very similar to the one…
We study solutions of the 2D Ginzburg-Landau equation -Δu+\frac{1}{\ve^2}u(|u|^2-1)=0 subject to "semi-stiff" boundary conditions: the Dirichlet condition for the modulus, |u|=1, and the homogeneous Neumann condition for the phase. The principal result of this work shows there are stable solutions of this problem with zeros (vortices), which are located near the boundary and have bounded energy in the limit of small epsilon. For the Dirichlet bondary condition ("stiff" problem), the existence of stable solutions with vortices, whose energy blows up as epsilon goes to 0, is well known. By contr…
