The problem of finding a necessary and sufficient condition for the continuity of the local times for a general Markov process is still open. Barlow and Hawkes have completely treated the case of the Lévy processes, and Marcus and Rosen have solved the case of the strongly symmetric Markov processes. We treat here the continuity of the local times of Borel right processes. Our approach unifies that of Barlow and Hawkes and of Marcus and Rosen, by using an associated Gaussian process, that appears as a limit in a CLT involving the local time process.
Let (X k) be a strictly stationary sequence of random variables with values in some Polish space E and common marginal $μ$, and (A k) k>0 be a sequence of Borel sets in E. In this paper, we give some conditions on (X k) and (A k) under which the events {X k $\in$ A k } satisfy the Borel-Cantelli (or strong Borel-Cantelli) property. In particular we prove that, if $μ$(lim sup n A n) > 0, the Borel-Cantelli property holds for any absolutely regular sequence. In case where the A k 's are nested, we show, on some examples, that a rate of convergence of the mixing coefficients is needed. Finally we…
In the present paper, we propose a new generalization of the Borel-Cantelli lemma. This generalization can be further used to derive strong limit results for Markov chains. Illustrative applications are provided.
Starting from a Markov chain with a finite alphabet, we consider the chain obtained when all but one symbol are undistinguishable for the practitioner. We study necessary and sufficient conditions for this chain to have continuous transition probabilities with respect to the past.
We consider piecewise deterministic Markov processes with degenerate transition kernels of the "house-of-cards"-type. We use a splitting scheme based on jump times to prove the absolute continuity, as well as some regularity, of the invariant measure of the process. Finally, we obtain finer results on the regularity of the one-dimensional marginals of the invariant measure, using integration by parts with respect to the jump times.
We investigate the relation between the e-property and the eventual continuity, or called the asymptotic equicontinuity, which is a generalization of the e-property. We prove that, for any discrete-time or strongly continuous continuous-time eventually continuous Markov-Feller semigroup with an ergodic measure, if the interior of the support of the ergodic measure is nonempty, then the e-property is satisfied on the interior of the support. In particular, it implies that, restricted on the support of each ergodic measure, the e-property and the eventual continuity are equivalent for the discre…
We provide a sufficient condition for the continuity of real valued permanental processes. When applied to the subclass of permanental processes which consists of squares of Gaussian processes, we obtain the sufficient condition for continuity which is also known to be necessary. Using an isomorphism theorem of Eisenbaum and Kaspi which relates Markov local times and permanental processes, we obtain a general sufficient condition for the joint continuity of local times.
We prove that if we are given a generator of a cadlag Markov process and an open domain $G$ in the state space, on which the generator has the local property expressed in a suitable way on a class $\mathcal{C}$ of test functions that is sufficiently rich, then the Markov process has continuous paths when it passes through $G$. The result holds for any Markov process which is associated with the generator merely on $\mathcal{C}$. This points out that the path continuity of the process is an a priori property encrypted by the generator acting on enough test functions, and this property can be ea…
We study Girsanov's theorem in the context of symmetric Markov processes, extending earlier work of Fukushima-Takeda and Fitzsimmons on Girsanov transformations of ``gradient type.'' We investigate the most general Girsanov transformation leading to another symmetric Markov process. This investigation requires an extension of the forward-backward martingale method of Lyons-Zheng, to cover the case of processes with jumps.
A Markovian bridge is a probability measure taken from a disintegration of the law of an initial part of the path of a Markov process given its terminal value. As such, Markovian bridges admit a natural parameterization in terms of the state space of the process. In the context of Feller processes with continuous transition densities, we construct by weak convergence considerations the only versions of Markovian bridges which are weakly continuous with respect to their parameter. We use this weakly continuous construction to provide an extension of the strong Markov property in which the flow …
We study two equivalent characterizations of the strong Feller property for a Markov process and of the associated sub-Markovian semigroup. One is described in terms of locally uniform absolute continuity, whereas the other uses local Orlicz-ultracontractivity. These criteria generalize many existing results on strong Feller continuity and seem to be more natural for Feller processes. By establishing the estimates of the first exit time from balls, we also investigate the continuity of harmonic functions for Feller processes which enjoy the strong Feller property.
In this article, we define the new concept of local coupling property for Markov processes and study its relationship with distributional properties of the transition probability. In the special case of Lévy processes we show that this property is equivalent to the absolute continuity of the transition probability and also provide a sufficient condition for it in terms of the Lévy measure. Our result is stronger than existing results for absolute continuity of Lévy distributions.
We study the continuity and the measurability of the solution to Schrödinger's functional equation, with respect to space, kernel and marginals, provided the space of all Borel probability measures is endowed with the weak topology. This is a continuation of our previous result where the space of all Borel probability measures was endowed with the strong topology. As an application, we construct a convex function of which the moment measure is a given probability measure, by the zero noise limit of a class of stochastic optimal transportation problems.
We prove results for random walks in dynamic random environments which do not require the strong uniform mixing assumptions present in the literature. We focus on the "environment seen from the walker"-process and in particular its invariant law. Under general conditions it exists and is mutually absolutely continuous to the environment law. With stronger assumptions we obtain for example uniform control on the density or a quenched CLT. The general conditions are made more explicit by looking at hidden Markov models or Markov chains as environment and by providing simple examples.
We develop a Thermodynamic Formalism for bounded continuous potentials defined on the sequence space $X\equiv E^{\mathbb{N}}$, where $E$ is a general Borel standard space. In particular, we introduce meaningful concepts of entropy and pressure for shifts acting on $X$ and obtain the existence of equilibrium states as additive probability measures for any bounded continuous potential. Furthermore, we establish convexity and other structural properties of the set of equilibrium states, prove a version of the Perron-Frobenius-Ruelle theorem under additional assumptions on the regularity of the po…
In this paper, we obtain new drift-type conditions for nonexplosion and explosion for nonhomogeneous Markov pure jump processes in Borel state spaces. The conditions are sharp; e.g., the one for nonexplosion is necessary if the state space is in addition locally compact and the $Q$-function satisfies weak Feller-type and local boundedness conditions. We comment on the relations of our conditions with the existing ones in the literature, and demonstrate some possible applications.
We generalize results of Fan and Zhang [6] on absolute continuity and singularity of the golden Markov geometric series to nonuniform stochastic series given by arbitrary Markov process. In addition we describe an application of these results in fractal geometry.
We derive the modulus of continuity of a class of processes called Canonical Embedded Branching Processes (CEBP), recently introduced by Decrouez and Jones, and we establish their monofractal character. CEBP provide a rich class of processes, including the Brownian motion as a particular case. The techniques developed in this study follow the steps of Barlow and Perkins on Brownian motion on a Sierpinski gasket, though complications arise here since CEBP are not Markovian in general.
Let $μ$ denote a Borel probability measure and let $\{ μ_{t} \}_{t\geq 1}$ denote the free additive convolution semigroup of Nica and Speicher. We show that the support of these measures varies continuously in the Hausdorff metric for $t >1$. We utilize complex analytic methods and, in particular, a characterization of the absolutely continuous portion of these supports due to Huang.
We consider a discrete-time Markov decision process with Borel state and action spaces. The performance criterion is to maximize a total expected {utility determined by unbounded return function. It is shown the existence of optimal strategies under general conditions allowing the reward function to be unbounded both from above and below and the action sets available at each step to the decision maker to be not necessarily compact. To deal with unbounded reward functions, a new characterization for the weak convergence of probability measures is derived. Our results are illustrated by examples…
In this paper we prove that every random variable of the form $F(M_T)$ with $F:\real^d \to\real$ a Borelian map and $M$ a $d$-dimensional continuous Markov martingale with respect to a Markov filtration $\mathcal{F}$ admits an exact integral representation with respect to $M$, that is, without any orthogonal component. This representation holds true regardless any regularity assumption on $F$. We extend this result to Markovian quadratic growth BSDEs driven by $M$ and show they can be solved without an orthogonal component. To this end, we extend first existence results for such BSDEs under a …
The aim of this note is to show, by providing an elementary way to construct counter-examples, that the strong Feller and the joint (space-time) continuity for a semigroup of Markov kernels on a Polish space are not enough to ensure the existence of an associated càdlàg Markov process on the same space. One such simple counter-example is the Brownian semigroup on $\mathbb{R}$ restricted to $\mathbb{R}\setminus \{0\}$, for which it is shown that there is no associated càdlàg Markov process. Using the same idea and results from potential theory we then prove that the analogous result with càdlàg…
Suppose that $(X_t)_{t \ge 0}$ is a one-dimensional Brownian motion with negative drift $-μ$. It is possible to make sense of conditioning this process to be in the state $0$ at an independent exponential random time and if we kill the conditioned process at the exponential time the resulting process is Markov. If we let the rate parameter of the random time go to $0$, then the limit of the killed Markov process evolves like $X$ conditioned to hit $0$, after which time it behaves as $X$ killed at the last time $X$ visits $0$. Equivalently, the limit process has the dynamics of the killed "bang…
The main goal of this paper is to apply the so-called policy iteration algorithm (PIA) for the long run average continuous control problem of piecewise deterministic Markov processes (PDMP's) taking values in a general Borel space and with compact action space depending on the state variable. In order to do that we first derive some important properties for a pseudo-Poisson equation associated to the problem. In the sequence it is shown that the convergence of the PIA to a solution satisfying the optimality equation holds under some classical hypotheses and that this optimal solution yields to…
The main goal of this paper is to derive sufficient conditions for the existence of an optimal control strategy for the long run average continuous control problem of piecewise deterministic Markov processes (PDMP's) taking values in a general Borel space and with compact action space depending on the state variable. In order to do that we apply the so-called vanishing discount approach to obtain a solution to an average cost optimality inequality associated to the long run average cost problem. Our main assumptions are written in terms of some integro-differential inequalities related to the …
We prove the existence of a local time, the continuity of the local time about $t$, and the regular property for $a.e.$ $x\in R$ of a Ornstein-Uhlenbeck type $\{X_t,\ t\in R^+\}$ driven by a general Lévy process, under mild regularity conditions. We discuss the asymptotic behaviour of the local time when $X$ is ergodic. We also investigate the first passage problem. These results give precise information about the local properties of the sample functions.
We prove the existence of the persistence exponent $$\logλ:=\lim_{n\to\infty}\frac{1}{n}\log \mathbb{P}_μ(X_0\in S,\ldots,X_n\in S)$$ for a class of time homogeneous Markov chains $\{X_i\}_{i\geq 0}$ taking values in a Polish space, where $S$ is a Borel measurable set and $μ$ is an initial distribution. Focusing on the case of AR($p$) and MA($q$) processes with $p,q\in \mathbb{N}$ and continuous innovation distribution, we study the existence of $λ$ and its continuity in the parameters of the AR and MA processes, respectively, for $S=\mathbb{R}_{\geq 0}$. For AR processes with log-concave inno…
We analyze multidimensional Markovian integral equations that are formulated with a time-inhomogeneous progressive Markov process that has Borel measurable transition probabilities. In the case of a path-dependent diffusion process, the solutions to these integral equations lead to the concept of mild solutions to semilinear parabolic path-dependent partial differential equations (PPDEs). Our goal is to establish uniqueness, stability, existence, and non-extendibility of solutions among a certain class of maps. By requiring the Feller property of the Markov process, we give weak conditions und…
We investigate the Markov property and the continuity with respect to the initial conditions (strong Feller property) for the solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations forced by an additive noise. First, we prove, by means of an abstract selection principle, that there are Markov solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations. Due to the lack of continuity of solutions in the space of finite energy, the Markov property holds almost everywhere in time. Then, depending on the regularity of the noise, we prove that any Markov solution has the strong Feller property for regular initial conditions. We giv…
The purpose of this paper is to study the time average behavior of Markov chains with transition probabilities being kernels of completely continuous operators, and therefore to provide a sufficient condition for a class of Markov chains that are frequently used in dynamic economic models to be ergodic. The paper reviews the time average convergence of the quasi-weakly complete continuity Markov operators to a unique projection operator. Also, it shows that a further assumption of quasi-strongly complete continuity reduces the dependence of the unique invariant measure on its corresponding ini…
In this paper we study time-inhomogeneous affine processes beyond the common assumption of stochastic continuity. In this setting times of jumps can be both inaccessible and predictable. To this end we develop a general theory of finite dimensional affine semimartingales under very weak assumptions. We show that the corresponding semimartingale characteristics have affine form and that the conditional characteristic function can be represented with solutions to measure differential equations of Riccati type. We prove existence of affine Markov processes and affine semimartingales under mild co…
We study a class of nonlinear BSDEs with a superlinear driver process f adapted to a filtration F and over a random time interval [[0, S]] where S is a stopping time of F. The terminal condition $ξ$ is allowed to take the value +$\infty$, i.e., singular. Our goal is to show existence of solutions to the BSDE in this setting. We will do so by proving that the minimal supersolution to the BSDE is a solution, i.e., attains the terminal values with probability 1. We consider three types of terminal values: 1) Markovian: i.e., $ξ$ is of the form $ξ$ = g($Ξ$ S) where $Ξ$ is a continuous Markovian di…
Under continuity and recurrence assumptions, we prove that the iteration of successive partial symmetrizations that form a time-homogeneous Markov process, converges to a symmetrization. We cover several settings, including the approximation of the spherical nonincreasing rearrangement by Steiner symmetrizations, polarizations and cap symmetrizations. A key tool in our analysis is a quantitative measure of the asymmetry.
In this work we study the Hausdorff dimension of measures whose weight distribution satisfies a markov non-homogeneous property. We prove, in particular, that the Hausdorff dimensions of this kind of measures coincide with their lower Rényi dimensions (entropy). Moreover, we show that the Tricot dimensions (packing dimension) equal the upper Rényi dimensions. As an application we get a continuity property of the Hausdorff dimension of the measures, when it is seen as a function of the distributed weights under the $\ell^{\infty}$ norm.
