Let $M$ be a closed oriented $d$-dimensionnal manifold and let $LM$ be the space of free loops on $M$. In this paper, we give a geometrical interpretation of the loop coproduct and we study it's compatibility with the Serre spectral sequence associated to the fibration $ΩM \to LM \to M$. Then, we show that the spectral sequence associated to the free loop fibration $LN \to LX \to LM$ of some Serre fibration $N \to X \to M$ is a spectral sequence of Frobenius algebra.
This note explores the interaction between cohomology operations in a generalized cohomology theory and a string topology loop coproduct dual to the Chas--Sullivan loop product. More precisely, we ask for a description for the failure of a given operation to commute with the loop coproduct, and will obtain a satisfactory answer in the case where the operation preserves both sums and products. Examples of such operations include the total Steenrod square in ordinary mod 2 cohomology and the Adams operations in K-theory.
The free loop space of a Lie group is homeomorphic to the product of the Lie group itself and its based loop space. We show that the coproduct on the homology of the free loop space that was introduced by Goresky and Hingston splits into the diagonal map on the group and a based coproduct on the homology of the based loop space. This result implies that the coproduct is trivial for even-dimensional Lie groups. Using results by Bott and Samelson, we show that the coproduct is trivial as well for a large family of simply connected Lie groups.
Cohen and Godin constructed positive boundary topological quantum field theory (TQFT) structure on the homology of free loop spaces of oriented closed smooth manifolds by associating a certain operations called string operations to orientable surfaces with parametrized boundaries. We show that all TQFT string operations associated to surfaces of genus at least one vanish identically. This is a simple consequence of properties of the loop coproduct which will be discussed in detail. One interesting property is that the loop coproduct is nontrivial only on the degree $d$ homology group of the co…
Félix and Thomas extended the loop products and coproducts to simply-connected Gorenstein spaces. We explicitly describe these operations with rational coefficients in terms of Sullivan models. Moreover, by this description, we prove some results on triviality of these operations. They include a variant of the result of Tamanoi, and generalizations of that of Félix and Thomas and that of Naito.
We extend the loop product and the loop coproduct to the mapping space from the $k$-dimensional sphere, or more generally from any $k$-manifold, to a $k$-connected space with finite dimensional rational homotopy group, $k\geq 1$. The key to extending the loop coproduct is the fact that the embedding $M\rightarrow M^{S^{k-1}}$ is of "finite codimension" in a sense of Gorenstein spaces. Moreover, we prove the associativity, commutativity, and Frobenius compatibility of them.
Using the loop coproduct, Menichi proved that the cup product with the orientation class vanishes for a closed connected oriented manifold with non-trivial Euler characteristic. We generalize this to the sphere spaces, i.e. the mapping spaces from spheres, using two generalizations of the loop coproduct to sphere spaces. One is constructed in this paper and the other in a previous paper of the author.
Let M be a closed Riemannian manifold. We extend the product of Goresky-Hingston, on the cohomology of the free loop space of M relative to the constant loops, to a nonrelative product. It is graded associative and commutative, and compatible with the length filtration on the loop space, like the original product. We prove the following new geometric property of the dual homology coproduct: the nonvanishing of the k-th iterate of the coproduct on a homology class ensures the existence of a loop with a (k+1)-fold self-intersection in every representative of the class. For spheres and projective…
We explain our previous results about Hochschild actions [Kau07a, Kau08a] pertaining in particular to the coproduct which appeared in a different form in [GH09] and provide a fresh look at the results. We recall the general action, specialize to the aforementioned coproduct and prove that the assumption of commutativity, made for convenience in [Kau08a], is not needed. We give detailed background material on loop spaces, Hochschild complexes and dualizations, and discuss details and extensions of these techniques which work for all operations of [Kau07a, Kau08a]. With respect to loop spaces, w…
Given a closed manifold $M$. We give an algebraic model for the Chas-Sullivan product and the Goresky-Hingston coproduct. In the simply-connected case, this admits a particularly nice description in terms of a Poincaré duality model of the manifold, and involves the configuration space of two points on $M$. We moreover, construct an $IBL_\infty$-structure on (a model of) cyclic chains on the cochain algebra of $M$, such that the natural comparison map to the $S^1$-equivariant loop space homology intertwines the Lie bialgebra structure on homology. The construction of the coproduct/cobracket de…
Let $M$ be any simply-connected Gorenstein space over any field. Félix and Thomas have extended to simply-connected Gorenstein spaces, the loop (co)products of Chas and Sullivan on the homology of the free loop space $H_*(LM)$. We describe these loop (co)products in terms of the torsion and extension functors by developing string topology in appropriate derived categories. As a consequence, we show that the Eilenberg-Moore spectral sequence converging to the loop homology of a Gorenstein space admits a multiplication and a comultiplication with shifted degree which are compatible with the loop…
In this paper, we investigate the behaviour of the Serre spectral sequence with respect to the algebraic structures of string topology in generalized homology theories, specificially with the Chas-Sullivan product and the corresponding coproduct and module structures. We prove compatibility for two kinds of fibre bundles: the fibre bundle $Ω^n M \to L^n M \to M$ for an $h_*$-oriented manifold $M$ and the looped fibre bundle $L^n F \to L^n E \to L^n B$ of a fibre bunde $F \to E \to B$ of $h_*$-oriented manifolds. Our method lies in the construction of Gysin morphisms of spectral sequences. We a…
When $X$ is an associative H-space, the bar spectral sequence computes the homology of the delooping, $H_{*}(BX)$. If $X$ is an $n$-fold loop space for $n\geq2$ this is a spectral sequence of Hopf algebras. Using machinery by Sugawara and Clark, we show that the spectral sequence filtration respects the Browder bracket structure on $H_{*}(BX)$, and so it is moreover a spectral sequence of Poisson algebras. Through the bracket on the spectral sequence, we establish a connection between the degree $n-1$ bracket on $H_{*}(X)$ and the degree $n-2$ bracket on $H_{*}(BX)$. This generalizes a result …
Consider the mod 2 homology spectral sequence associated to a cosimplicial space X. We construct external operations whose target is the spectral sequence associated to EΣ_2 \times_{Σ_2} (X\times X). If X is a cosimplicial E_\infty-space, we couple these external operations with the structure map EΣ_2 \times_{Σ_2} (X\times X) \to X to produce internal operations in the spectral sequence. In the sequel we show that they agree with the usual Araki-Kudo operations on the abutment H_*(Tot X).
We study the mod-2 cohomology spectral sequence arising from delooping the Bousfield-Kan cosimplicial space giving the 2-nilpotent completion of a connective spectrum $X$. Under good conditions its $E_{2}$-term is computable as certain non-abelian derived functors evaluated at $H^*(X)$ as a module over the Steenrod algebra, and it converges to the cohomology of $Ω^\infty X$. We provide general methods for computing the $E_{2}$-term, including the construction of a multiplicative spectral sequence of Serre type for cofibration sequences of simplicial commutative algebras. Some simple examples a…
We prove a strengthened version of a theorem of Lionel Schwartz that says that certain modules over the Steenrod algebra cannot be the mod 2 cohomology of a space. What is most interesting is our method, which replaces his iterated use of the Eilenberg--Moore spectral sequence by a single use of the spectral sequence converging to the mod 2 cohomology of Omega^nX obtained from the Goodwillie tower for the suspension spectrum of Omega^nX. Much of the paper develops basic properties of this spectral sequence.
Chas and Sullivan recently defined an intersection product on the homology $H_*(LM)$ of the space of smooth loops in a closed, oriented manifold $M$. In this paper we will use the homotopy theoretic realization of this product described by the first two authors to construct a second quadrant spectral sequence of algebras converging to the loop homology multiplicatively, when $M$ is simply connected. The $E_2$ term of this spectral sequence is $H^*(M;H_*(ΩM))$ where the product is given by the cup product on the cohomology of the manifold $H^* (M)$ with coefficients in the Pontryagin ring struc…
Let X be a finite, n-dimensional, r-connected CW complex. We prove the following theorem: If p \geq n/r is an odd prime, then the loop space homology Bockstein spectral sequence modulo p is a spectral sequence of universal enveloping algebras over differential graded Lie algebras.
Mickelsson defined a group 2-cocycle on the group of smooth maps from the closed unit 2-disk to a Lie group G and constructed a smooth central extension on a loop group of G, called the affine Kac-Moody central extension. We reformulate this central extension theory in the terms of the seven-term exact sequence for cohomology groups for discrete groups.
In this paper the Serre spectral sequence of Moerdijk and Svensson is extended from Bredon cohomology to RO(G)-graded cohomology for finite groups G. Special attention is paid to the case G=Z/2 where the spectral sequence is used to compute the cohomology of certain projective bundles and loop spaces.
Colocalization is a right adjoint to the inclusion of a subcategory. Given a ring-spectrum R, one would like a spectral sequence which connects a given colocalization in the derived category of R-modules and an appropriate colocalization in the derived category of graded modules over the graded ring of homotopy groups of R. We show that, under suitable conditions, such a spectral sequence exists. This generalizes Greenlees' local-cohomology spectral sequence. The colocalization spectral sequence introduced here is associated with a localization spectral sequence, which is shown to be universal…
We relate the brace products of a fibration with section to the differentials in its serre spectral sequence. In the particular case of free loop fibrations, we establish a link between these differentials and browder operations in the fiber. Applications and several calculations (for the particular case of spheres and wedges of spheres) are given.
We employ the Goodwillie spectral sequence for the iterated loop space functor in order to provide realizability conditions on certain unstable modules over the Steenrod algebra at an odd prime.
In the world of chain complexes E_n-algebras are the analogues of based n-fold loop spaces in the category of topological spaces. Fresse showed that operadic E_n-homology of an E_n-algebra computes the homology of an n-fold algebraic delooping. The aim of this paper is to construct two spectral sequences for calculating these homology groups and to treat some concrete classes of examples such as Hochschild cochains, graded polynomial algebras and chains on iterated loop spaces. In characteristic zero we gain an identification of the summands in Pirashvili's Hodge decomposition of higher order …
We study the spectral sequence that one obtains by applying mod 2 homology to the Goodwillie tower which sends a spectrum X to the suspension spectrum of its 0th space X_0. This converges strongly to H_*(X_0) when X is 0-connected. The E^1 term is the homology of the extended powers of X, and thus is a well known functor of H_*(X), including structure as a bigraded Hopf algebra, a right module over the mod 2 Steenrod algebra A, and a left module over the Dyer-Lashof operations. Hopf algebra considerations show that all pages of the spectral sequence are primitively generated, with primitives e…
A spectral sequence for the computation of the Hochschild cohomology of a coconnective dga over a field is presented. This spectral sequence has a similar flavour to the spectral sequence constructed by Cohen, Jones and Yan for the computation of the loop homology of a closed orientable manifold. Using this spectral sequence we identify a class of spaces for which the Hochschild cohomology of their mod-p cochain algebra is Noetherian. This implies, among other things, that for such a space the derived category of mod-p chains on its loop-space carries a theory of support varieties.
We study how the combinatorial structure of the Salvetti complexes of the braid arrangements are related to homotopy theoretic properties of iterated loop spaces. We prove the skeletal filtrations on the Salvetti complexes of the braid arrangements give rise to the cobar-type Eilenberg-Moore spectral sequence converging to the homology of $Ω^2Σ^2 X$. We also construct a new spectral sequence that computes the homology of $Ω^{\ell}Σ^{\ell} X$ for $\ell>2$ by using a higher order analogue of the Salvetti complex. The $E^1$-term of the spectral sequence is described in terms of the homology of $X…
