We show that Haar measures of connected semisimple groups, embedded via a representation into a matrix space, have a homogeneous asymptotic limit when viewed from far away and appropriately rescaled. This is still true if the Haar measure of the semisimple group is replaced by the Haar measure of a irreducible lattice of the group, and the asymptotic measure is the same. In the case of an almost simple group of rank greater than 2, a remainder term in obtained. This extends and precises anterior results of Duke, Rudnick and Sarnak, and Eskin-McMullen in the case of a group variety.
The extended weight semigroup of a homogeneous space G/H of a connected semisimple algebraic group G characterizes the spectra of the representations of G on the spaces of regular sections of homogeneous linear bundles over G/H, including the space of regular functions on G/H. We compute the extended weight semigroups for all strictly irreducible affine spherical homogeneous spaces G/H, where G is a simply connected non-simple semisimple complex algebraic group and H a connected closed subgroup of it. In all the cases we also find the highest weight functions corresponding to the indecomposabl…
In this paper we develop algorithms of finding homogeneous spaces of semisimple non-compact Lie groups which do not admit compact Clifford-Klein forms. We propose a computer program which checks if the given homogeneous space has a non-vanishing cohomological obstruction (found by Tholozan) to compact Clifford-Klein forms. By a numerical experiment we show that there is a large class of homogeneous spaces satisfying Tholozan's condition.
In this note we propose a method to classify homogeneous nilpotent elements in a real $Z_m$-graded semisimple Lie algebra $g$. Using this we describe the set of orbits of homogeneous elements in a real $Z_2$-graded semisimple Lie algebra. A classification of 4-vectors (resp. 4-forms) on $R^8$ can be given using this method.
Let G = SL(n,R) (or, more generally, let G be a connected, noncompact, simple Lie group). For any compact Lie group K, it is easy to find a compact manifold M, such that there is a volume-preserving, connection-preserving, ergodic action of G on some smooth, principal K-bundle P over M. Can M can be chosen independent of K? We show that if M = H/L is a homogeneous space, and the action of G on M is by translations, then P must also be a homogeneous space H'/L'. Consequently, there is a strong restriction on the groups K that can arise over this particular M.
Let G be a simple non-compact linear connected Lie group and H be a closed non-compact semisimple subgroup. We are interested in finding classes of homogeneous spaces G/H admitting proper actions of discrete non virtually abelian subgroups of G. We develop an algorithm for finding such homogeneous spaces. As a testing example we obtain a list of all non-compact homogeneous spaces G/H admitting proper action of a discrete and non virtually abelian subgroup of G in the case when G has rank at most 8, and H is a maximal proper semisimple subgroup.
For g a split semisimple Lie algebra over a field of characteristic 0, we link locally trivial principal homogeneous spaces over Spec(R) to the question of conjugacy of maximal abelian diagonalizable subalgebras of g(R).
Let $G$ be a semisimple real Lie group with finite center and $H$ a connected closed subgroup. We establish a geometric criterion which detects whether the representation of $G$ in $L^2(G/H)$ is tempered.
Let G be a complex semisimple Lie group and H a complex closed connected subgroup. Let g and h be their Lie algebras. We prove that the regular representation of G in $L^2(G/H)$ is tempered if and only if the orthogonal of h in g contains regular elements.
For all spherical homogeneous spaces G/H, where G is a simply connected semisimple algebraic group and H a connected solvable subgroup of G, we compute the spectra of the representations of G on spaces of regular sections of homogeneous line bundles over G/H.
Let $G$ be a semisimple algebraic group and $B$ a Borel subgroup. We consider generalisations of Lusztig's q-analogues of weight multiplicity, where the set of positive roots is replaced with the multiset of weights of a $B$-submodule of an arbitrary finite-dimensional $G$-module.
A compact Lie group G and a faithful complex representation V determine a Sato-Tate measure, defined as the direct image of Haar measure on G with respect to the character of V. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for a Sato-Tate measure to be an isolated point in the set of such measures, regarded as a subset of the space of distributions. In particular we prove that the Sato-Tate measure of a connected and semisimple group with respect to an irreducible representation is an isolated point.
Let G be a real semisimple algebraic Lie group and H a real reductive algebraic subgroup. We describe the pairs (G,H) for which the representation of G in $L^2(G/H)$ is tempered. When G and H are complex Lie groups, the temperedness condition is characterized by the fact that the stabilizer in H of a generic point on G/H is virtually abelian.
Let G be a semisimple algebraic Lie group and H a reductive subgroup. We find geometrically the best even integer p for which the representation of G in L^2(G/H) is almost L^{p}. As an application, we give a criterion which detects whether this representation is tempered.
For an affine spherical homogeneous space G/H of a connected semisimple algebraic group G, we consider the factorization morphism by the action on G/H of a maximal unipotent subgroup of G. We prove that this morphism is equidimensional if and only if the weight semigroup of G/H satisfies some simple condition.
Let $\mathfrak g$ be a semisimple Lie algebra, $\mathfrak h\subset\mathfrak g$ a reductive subalgebra such that $\mathfrak h^\perp$ is a complementary $\mathfrak h$-submodule of $\mathfrak g$. In 1983, Bogoyavlenski claimed that one obtains a Poisson commutative subalgebra of the symmetric algebra ${\mathcal S}(\mathfrak g)$ by taking the subalgebra ${\mathcal Z}$ generated by the bi-homogeneous components of all $H\in{\mathcal S}(\mathfrak g)^{\mathfrak g}$. But this is false, and we present a counterexample. We also provide a criterion for the Poisson commutativity of such subalgebras ${\mat…
A description of transitive actions of a semisimple algebraic group G on toric varieties is obtained. Every toric variety admitting such an action lies between a product of punctured affine spaces and a product of projective spaces. The result is based on the Cox realization of a toric variety as a quotient space of an open subset of a vector space V by a quasitorus action and on investigation of the G-module structure of V.
In the study of discontinuous groups for non-Riemannian homogeneous spaces, the idea of "continuous analogue" gives a powerful method (T. Kobayashi [Math. Ann. 1989]). For example, a semisimple symmetric space G/H admits a discontinuous group which is not virtually abelian if and only if G/H admits a proper SL(2,R)-action (T. Okuda [J. Differential Geom. 2013]). However, the action of discrete subgroups is not always approximated by that of connected groups. In this paper, we show that the theorem cannot be extended to general homogeneous spaces G/H of reductive type. We give a counterexample …
Let $M$ be a $G$-covering of a nilpotent orbit in $\g$ where $G$ is a complex semisimple Lie group and $\g=\text{Lie}(G)$. We prove that under Poisson bracket the space $R[2]$ of homogeneous functions on $M$ of degree 2 is the unique maximal semisimple Lie subalgebra of $R=R(M)$ containing $\g$. The action of $\g'\simeq R[2]$ exponentiates to an action of the corresponding Lie group $G'$ on a $G'$-cover $M'$ of a nilpotent orbit in $\g'$ such that $M$ is open dense in $M'$. We determine all such pairs $(\g\subset\g')$.
We introduce a new construction of exceptional objects in the derived category of coherent sheaves on a compact homogeneous space of a semisimple algebraic group and show that it produces exceptional collections of the length equal to the rank of the Grothendieck group on homogeneous spaces of all classical groups.
Let $G$ be a connected and simply connected complex semisimple Lie group. For a collection of homogeneous $G$-spaces $G/Q$, we construct a finite atlas ${\mathcal{A}}_{\rm BS}(G/Q)$ on $G/Q$, called the Bott-Samelson atlas, and we prove that all of its coordinate functions are positive with respect to the Lusztig positive structure on $G/Q$. We also show that the standard Poisson structure $π_{G/Q}$ on $G/Q$ is presented, in each of the coordinate charts of ${\mathcal{A}}_{\rm BS}(G/Q)$, as a symmetric Poisson CGL extension (or a certain localization thereof) in the sense of Goodearl-Yakimov, …
Given a connected reductive complex algebraic group $G$ and a spherical subgroup $H \subset G$, the extended weight monoid $\widehat Λ^+_G(G/H)$ encodes the $G$-module structures on spaces of global sections of all $G$-linearized line bundles on $G/H$. Assuming that $G$ is semisimple and simply connected and $H$ is specified by a regular embedding in a parabolic subgroup $P \subset G$, in this paper we obtain a description of $\widehat Λ^+_G(G/H)$ via the set of simple spherical roots of $G/H$ together with certain combinatorial data explicitly computed from the pair $(P,H)$. As an application…
The main result in this paper is a fixed point formula for equivariant indices of elliptic differential operators, for proper actions by connected semisimple Lie groups on possibly noncompact manifolds, with compact quotients. For compact groups and manifolds, this reduces to the Atiyah-Segal-Singer fixed point formula. Other special cases include an index theorem by Connes and Moscovici for homogeneous spaces, and an earlier index theorem by the second author, both in cases where the group acting is connected and semisimple. As an application of this fixed point formula, we give a new proof o…
Let P be a parabolic subgroup of a semisimple complex Lie group G defined by a subset Σof simple roots of G, and let E_ϕbe a homogeneous vector bundle over the flag manifold G/P corresponding to a linear representation ϕof P. Using Bott's theorem, we obtain sufficient conditions on ϕin terms of the combinatorial structure of Σfor some cohomology groups of the sheaf of holomorphic sections of E_ϕto be zero. In particular, we define two numbers d(P), l(P) such that for any ϕobtained by natural operations from a representation of dimension less than d(P) the q-th cohomology group of E_ϕis zero fo…
Let G --> G' be an embedding of semisimple complex Lie groups, let B and B' be a pair of nested Borel subgroups, and let f:G/B --> G'/B' be the associated equivariant embedding of flag manifolds. We study the pullbacks of cohomologies of invertible sheaves on G'/B' along the embedding f. Let O' be a G'-equivariant invertible sheaf on G'/B', and let O be its restriction to G/B. Consider the G-equivariant pullback on cohomology p : H(G'/B',O') --> H(G/B,O). The Borel-Weil-Bott theorem implies that the two cohomology spaces above are irreducible modules of G' and G respectively. By Schur's lemma,…
