Given a sufficiently nice collection of sheaves on an algebraic variety V, Bondal explained how to build a quiver Q along with an ideal of relations in the path algebra of Q such that the derived category of representations of Q subject to these relations is equivalent to the derived category of coherent sheaves on V. We consider the case in which these sheaves are all locally free and study the moduli spaces of semistable representations of our quiver with relations for various stability conditions. We show that V can often be recovered as a connected component of such a moduli space and we describe the line bundle induced by a GIT construction of the moduli space in terms of the input data. In certain special cases, we interpret our results in the language of topological string theory.
We study an admissible subcategory of the Bondal quiver which conjecturally does not admit any Bridgeland stability conditions. Specifically, we prove that its Serre functor coincides with the spherical twist associated with a $3$-spherical object. As a consequence, we obtain a classification of the spherical objects, deduce the non-existence of Serre-invariant stability conditions, and construct a natural spherical functor from its structure as a categorical resolution of the nodal cubic curve.
Suppose $F\colon \mathcal{D}(X)\to \mathcal{T}$ is an exact functor from the bounded derived category of coherent sheaves on a smooth projective variety $X$ to a triangulated category $\mathcal{T}$. If $F$ possesses left and right adjoints, then the Bondal-Orlov criterion gives a simple way of determining if $F$ is fully faithful. We prove a natural extension to the case when $X$ is a smooth and proper DM stack with projective coarse moduli space.
In this paper, we give a construction of the moduli space of filtered representations of a given quiver of fixed dimension vector with the appropriate notion of stability. The construction of the moduli of filtered representations uses the moduli of representations of ladder quiver. The ladder quiver is introduced using a given quiver and a linear type quiver. We also study determinantal theta functions on such moduli spaces.
In the 1980s Drézet and Le Potier realized moduli spaces of Gieseker-semistable sheaves on $\mathbb{P}^2$ as what are now called quiver moduli spaces. We discuss how this construction can be understood using t-structures and exceptional collections on derived categories, and how it can be extended to a similar result on $\mathbb{P}^1\times\mathbb{P}^1$.
We generalize the notion of multi-Gieseker semistability for coherent sheaves, introduced by Greb, Ross, and Toma, to quiver sheaves for a quiver $Q$. We construct coarse moduli spaces for semistable quiver sheaves using a functorial method that realizes these as subschemes of moduli spaces of representations of a twisted quiver, depending on $Q$, with relations. We also show the projectivity of the moduli space in the case when $Q$ has no oriented cycles. Finally, we investigate the parameter dependence of the moduli.
We construct small desingularizations of moduli spaces of semistable quiver representations for indivisible dimension vectors using deformations of stabilites and a dimension estimate for nullcones. We apply this construction to several classes of GIT quotients.
We study the relationship between two stratifications on parameter spaces for coherent sheaves and for quiver representations: a stratification by Harder-Narasimhan types and a stratification arising from the geometric invariant theory construction of the associated moduli spaces of semistable objects. For quiver representations, both stratifications coincide, but this is not quite true for sheaves. We explain why the stratifications on various Quot schemes do not coincide and see that the correct parameter space to compare such stratifications is the stack of coherent sheaves. Then we relate …
A supersymmetric quantum mechanical model is constructed for BPS states bound to surface operators in five dimensional SU(r) gauge theories using D-brane engineering. This model represents the effective action of a certain D2-brane configuration, and is naturally obtained by dimensional reduction of a quiver $(0,2)$ gauged linear sigma model. In a special stability chamber, the resulting moduli space of quiver representations is shown to be virtually smooth and isomorphic to a moduli space of framed quotients on the projective plane. A precise conjecture relating a K-theoretic partition functi…
This is a review article exploring similarities between moduli of quiver representations and moduli of vector bundles over a smooth projective curve. After describing the basic properties of these moduli problems and constructions of their moduli spaces via geometric invariant theory and symplectic reduction, we introduce their hyperkähler analogues: moduli spaces of representations of a doubled quiver satisfying certain relations imposed by a moment map and moduli spaces of Higgs bundles. Finally, we survey a surprising link between the counts of absolutely indecomposable objects over finite …
For a perfect field $k$, we study actions of the absolute Galois group of $k$ on the $\bar{k}$-valued points of moduli spaces of quiver representations over $k$; the fixed locus is the set of $k$-rational points and we obtain a decomposition of this fixed locus indexed by elements in the Brauer group of $k$. We provide a modular interpretation of this decomposition using quiver representations over division algebras, and we reinterpret this description using twisted quiver representations. We also see that moduli spaces of twisted quiver representations give different forms of the moduli space…
Motivated by the counting of BPS states in string theory with orientifolds, we study moduli spaces of self-dual representations of a quiver with contravariant involution. We develop Hall module techniques to compute the number of points over finite fields of moduli stacks of semistable self-dual representations. Wall-crossing formulas relating these counts for different choices of stability parameters recover the wall-crossing of orientifold BPS/Donaldson-Thomas invariants predicted in the physics literature. In finite type examples the wall-crossing formulas can be reformulated in terms of id…
For physicists: We show that the quiver gauge theory derived from a Calabi-Yau cone via an exceptional collection of line bundles on the base has the original cone as a component of its classical moduli space. For mathematicians: We use data from the derived category of sheaves on a Fano surface to construct a quiver, and show that its moduli space of representations has a component which is isomorphic to the anticanonical cone over the surface.
We discuss several aspects of D-brane moduli spaces and BPS spectra near orbifold points. We give a procedure to determine the decay products on a line of marginal stability, and we define the algebra of BPS states in terms of quivers. These issues are illustrated in detail in the case of type IIA theory on C^2/Z_N. We also show that many of these results can be extended to arbitrary points in the compactification moduli space using Pi-stability.
This article describes some complex-analytic aspects of the moduli space of the finite-dimensional complex representations of a finite quiver, which are stable with respect to a fixed rational weight. We construct a natural structure of a complex manifold on this moduli space, and a Kähler metric on the complex manifold. We then define a Hermitian holomorphic line bundle on the moduli space, and show that its curvature is a rational multiple of the Kähler form.
The fixed point set under a natural torus action on projectivized moduli spaces of simple representations of quivers is described. As an application, the Euler characteristic of these moduli is computed.
Any moduli space of representations of a quiver (possibly with oriented cycles) has an embedding as a dense open subvariety into a moduli space of representations of a bipartite quiver having the same type of singularities. A connected quiver is Dynkin or extended Dynkin if and only if all moduli spaces of its representations are smooth.
We explore several variations of the notion of purity for the action of Frobenius on schemes defined over finite fields. In particular, we study how these notions are preserved under certain natural operations like quotients for principal bundles and also geometric quotients for reductive group actions. We then apply these results to study the cohomology of quiver moduli. We prove that a natural stratification of the space of representations of a quiver with a fixed dimension vector is equivariantly perfect and from it deduce that each of the $l$-adic cohomology groups of the quiver moduli spa…
We show that the moduli spaces of Thaddeus pairs on smooth projective curves and those of dual pairs are related by d-critical flips, which are virtual birational transformations introduced by the second author. We then prove the existence of fully-faithful functors between derived categories of coherent sheaves on these moduli spaces. Our result gives an evidence of a d-critical analogue of Bondal-Orlov, Kawamata's D/K equivalence conjecture, and also a categorification of wall-crossing formula of Donaldson-Thomas type invariants on ADHM sheaves introduced by Diaconescu.
We show that the moduli stacks of semistable sheaves on smooth projective varieties are analytic locally on their coarse moduli spaces described in terms of representations of the associated Ext-quivers with convergent relations. When the underlying variety is a Calabi-Yau 3-fold, our result describes the above moduli stacks as critical locus analytic locally on the coarse moduli spaces. The results in this paper will be applied to the wall-crossing formula of Gopakumar-Vafa invariants defined by Maulik and the author.
We show the existence of semiorthogonal decompositions (SOD) of Pandharipande-Thomas (PT) stable pair moduli spaces on Calabi-Yau 3-folds with irreducible curve classes, assuming relevant moduli spaces are non-singular. The above result is motivated by categorifications of wall-crossing formula of PT invariants in the derived category, and also a d-critical analogue of Bondal-Orlov, Kawamata's D/K equivalence conjecture. We also give SOD of stable pair moduli spaces on K3 surfaces, which categorifies Kawai-Yoshioka's formula proving Katz-Klemm-Vafa formula for PT invariants on K3 surfaces with…
It is shown that rational points over finite fields of moduli spaces of stable quiver representations are counted by polynomials with integer coefficients. These polynomials are constructed recursively using an identity in the Hall algebra of a quiver.
We give a sufficient condition for the moduli space of quiver representations associated with a dimer model to be smooth for a general stability parameter. We also show that the moduli space in this case is a crepant resolution of the toric variety determined by the Newton polygon of the characteristic polynomial.
We construct the moduli space of finite dimensional representations of generalized quivers for arbitrary connected complex reductive groups using Geometric Invariant Theory as well as Symplectic reduction methods. We explicit characterize stability and instability for generalized quivers in terms of Jordan-Hölder and Harder Narasimhan objects, reproducing well-known results for classical case of quiver representations. We define and study the Hesselink and Morse stratifications on the parameter space for representations, and bootstrap them to an inductive formula for the equivariant Poincaré P…
Framed quiver moduli parametrize stable pairs consisting of a quiver representation and a map to a fixed graded vector space. Geometric properties and explicit realizations of framed quiver moduli for quivers without oriented cycles are derived, with emphasis on their cohomology. Their use for quantum group constructions is discussed.
These lecture notes consist of an introduction to moduli spaces in algebraic geometry, with a strong emphasis placed on examples related to the theory of quiver representations. The goal is to provide the background necessary to understand the construction of the moduli spaces of stable and semistable quiver representations due to King, Nakajima's quiver varieties, as well as some 'quiver versions' of existing moduli spaces of algebra-geometric objects.
Let αbe a Schur root; let h=hcf_v(α(v)) and let p = 1 - < α/h,α/h >. Then a moduli space of representations of dimension vector αis birational to p h by h matrices up to simultaneous conjugacy. Therefore, if h=1,2,3 or 4, then such a moduli space is a rational variety and if h divides 420 it is a stably rational variety.
We construct moduli spaces of representations of quivers over arbitrary schemes and show how moduli spaces of pointed curves of genus zero like the Grothendieck-Knudsen moduli spaces $\overline{M}_{0,n}$ and the Losev-Manin moduli spaces $\overline{L}_n$ can be interpreted as inverse limits of moduli spaces of representations of certain bipartite quivers. We also investigate the case of more general Hassett moduli spaces $\overline{M}_{0,a}$ of weighted pointed stable curves of genus zero.
A system of functional equations relating the Euler characteristics of moduli spaces of stable representations of quivers and the Euler characteristics of (Hilbert scheme-type) framed versions of quiver moduli is derived. This is applied to wall-crossing formulas for the Donaldson-Thomas type invariants of M. Kontsevich and Y. Soibelman, in particular confirming their integrality.
Suppose $P^n_m$ is the blow up of $\mathbb{P}^n$ at a linear subspace of dimension $m$, $\mathcal{L}=\{L_1,\ldots,L_r\}$ is a (not necessarily full) strong exceptional collection of line bundles on $P^n_m$. Let $Q$ be the quiver associated to this collection. One might wonder when is $P^n_m$ the moduli space of representations of $Q$ with dimension vector $(1,\ldots,1)$ for a suitably chosen stability condition $θ$: $S\cong M_θ$. In this paper, we achieve such isomorphism using $\mathcal{L}$ of length $3$. As a result, $P^n_m$ is the moduli space of representations of a very simple quiver. Mor…
We show that a semi-stable moduli space of representations of an acyclic quiver can be identified with two GIT quotients by reductive groups. One of a quiver Grassmannian of a projective representation, the other of a quiver Grassmannian of an injective representation. This recovers as special cases the classical Gelfand-MacPherson correspondence and its generalization by Hu and Kim to bipartite quivers, as well as the Zelevinsky map for a quiver of Dynkin type A with the linear orientation.
A factorization formula for certain automorphisms of a Poisson algebra associated to a quiver is proved, which involves framed versions of moduli spaces of quiver representations. This factorization formula is related to wall-crossing formulas for Donaldson-Thomas type invariants of M. Kontsevich and Y. Soibelman.
We describe weighted projective lines in the sense of Geigle and Lenzing by a moduli problem on the canonical algebra of Ringel. We then go on to study generators of the derived categories of coherent sheaves on the total spaces of their canonical bundles, and show that they are rarely tilting. We also give a moduli construction for these total spaces for weighted projective lines with three orbifold points.
A result of A. King and C. Walter asserts that the Chow ring of a fine quiver moduli space is generated by the Chern classes of universal bundles if the quiver is acyclic. We will show that defining relations between these Chern classes arise geometrically as degeneracy loci associated to the universal representation.
We compute rational equivariant Chow rings with respect to a torus of quiver moduli spaces. We derive a presentation in terms of generators and relations, use torus localization to identify it as a subring of the Chow ring of the fixed point locus, and we compare the two descriptions.
Torus fixed points of quiver moduli spaces are given by stable representations of the universal (abelian) covering quiver. As far as the Kronecker quiver is concerned they can be described by stable representations of certain bipartite quivers coming along with a stable colouring. By use of the glueing method it is possible to construct a huge class of such quivers implying a lower bound for the Euler characteristic. For certain roots it is even possible to construct all torus fixed points.
The aim of this paper is to study the singularities of certain moduli spaces of sheaves on K3 surfaces by means of Nakajima quiver varieties. The singularities in question arise from the choice of a non--generic polarization, with respect to which we consider stability, and admit natural symplectic resolutions corresponding to choices of general polarizations. For sheaves that are pure of dimension one, we show that these moduli spaces are, locally around a singular point, isomorphic to a quiver variety and that, via this isomorphism, the natural symplectic resolutions correspond to variations…
We study torus actions on moduli spaces of quivers. First we give a description of the weight spaces of the induced action of the tangent space to a torus-fixed point. Then we focus on actions of tori of rank one and derive an explicit form for the attractors in the Białynicki-Birula decomposition.
The BPS state spectrum in four-dimensional gauge theories or string vacua with N=2 supersymmetries is well known to depend on the values of the parameters or moduli at spatial infinity. The BPS index is locally constant, but discontinuous across real codimension-one walls where some of the BPS states decay. By postulating that BPS states are bound states of more elementary constituents carrying their own degrees of freedom and interacting via supersymmetric quantum mechanics, we provide a physically transparent derivation of the universal wall-crossing formula which governs the jump of the ind…
Suppose $S$ is a smooth projective surface over an algebraically closed field $k$, $\mathcal{L}=\{L_1,\ldots,L_n\}$ is a full strong exceptional collection of line bundles on $S$. Let $Q$ be the quiver associated to this collection. One might hope that $S$ is the moduli space of representations of $Q$ with dimension vector $(1,\ldots,1)$ for a suitably chosen stability condition $θ$: $S\cong M_θ$. In this paper, we show that this is the case for del Pezzo surfaces. Furthermore, we show the blow-up at a point can be recovered from an augmentation of exceptional collections (in the sense of L. H…
We give a moduli-theoretic treatment of the existence and properties of moduli spaces of semistable quiver representations, avoiding methods from geometric invariant theory. Using the existence criteria of Alper--Halpern-Leistner--Heinloth, we show that for many stability functions, the stack of semistable representations admits an adequate moduli space, and prove that this moduli space is proper over the moduli space of semisimple representations. We construct a natural determinantal line bundle that descends to a semiample line bundle on the moduli space and provide new effective bounds for …
In the first part of this paper we provide a survey of some fundamental results about moduli spaces of framed sheaves on smooth projective surfaces. In particular, we outline a result by Bruzzo and Markushevich, and discuss a few significant examples. The moduli spaces of framed sheaves on $\mathbb{P}^2$, on multiple blowup of $\mathbb{P}^2$ are described in terms of ADHM data and, when this characterization is available, as quiver varieties. The second part is devoted to a detailed study of framed sheaves on the Hirzebruch surface $Σ_n$ in the case when the invariant expressing the necessary …
Motivated by problems in the neural networks setting, we study moduli spaces of double framed quiver representations and give both a linear algebra description and a representation theoretic description of these moduli spaces. We define a network category whose isomorphism classes of objects correspond to the orbits of quiver representations, in which neural networks map input data. We then prove that the output of a neural network depends only on the corresponding point in the moduli space. Finally, we present a different perspective on mapping neural networks with a specific activation funct…
Motivated by string-theoretic arguments Manschot, Pioline and Sen discovered a new remarkable formula for the Poincare polynomial of a smooth compact moduli space of stable quiver representations which effectively reduces to the abelian case (i.e. thin dimension vectors). We first prove a motivic generalization of this formula, valid for arbitrary quivers, dimension vectors and stabilities. In the case of complete bipartite quivers we use the refined GW/Kronecker correspondence between Euler characteristics of quiver moduli and Gromov-Witten invariants to identify the MPS formula for Euler cha…
Methods of Harder and Narasimhan from the theory of moduli of vector bundles are applied to moduli of quiver representations. Using the Hall algebra approach to quantum groups, an analog of the Harder-Narasimhan recursion is constructed inside the quantized enveloping algebra of a Kac-Moody algebra. This leads to a canonical orthogonal system, the HN system, in this algebra. Using a resolution of the recursion, an explicit formula for the HN system is given. As an application, explicit formulas for Betti numbers of the cohomology of quiver moduli are derived, generalizing several results on th…
Effective field theories in type I and II superstring theories for D-branes located at points in the orbifold C^2/Z_n are supersymmetric gauge theories whose field content is conveniently summarized by a `quiver diagram,' and whose Lagrangian includes non-metric couplings to the orbifold moduli: in particular, twisted sector moduli couple as Fayet-Iliopoulos terms in the gauge theory. These theories describe D-branes on resolved ALE spaces. Their spaces of vacua are moduli spaces of smooth ALE metrics and Yang-Mills instantons, whose metrics are explicitly computable. For U(N) instantons, the …
For any moduli space of stable representations of quivers, certain smooth varieties, compactifying projective space fibrations over the moduli space, are constructed. The boundary of this compactification is analyzed. Explicit formulas for the Betti numbers of the smooth models are derived. In the case of moduli of simple representations, explicit cell decompositions of the smooth models are constructed.
