We prove limit theorems for rescaled occupation time fluctuations of a (d,alpha,beta)-branching particle system (particles moving in R^d according to a spherically symmetric alpha-stable Levy process, (1+beta)-branching, 0<beta<1, uniform Poisson initial state), in the cases of critical dimension, d=alpha(1+beta)/beta, and large dimensions, d>alpha(1+beta)/beta. The fluctuation processes are continuous but their limits are stable processes with independent increments, which have jumps. The convergence is in the sense of finite-dimensional distributions, and also of space-time random fields (tightness does not hold in the usual Skorohod topology). The results are in sharp contrast with those for intermediate dimensions, alpha/beta < d < d(1+beta)/beta, where the limit process is continuous and has long range dependence (this case is studied by Bojdecki et al, 2005). The limit process is measure-valued for the critical dimension, and S'(R^d)-valued for large dimensions. We also raise some questions of interpretation of the different types of dimension-dependent results obtained in the present and previous papers in terms of properties of the particle system.
Functional limit theorems are presented for the rescaled occupation time fluctuations process of a critical finite variance branching particle system in $R^d$ with symmetric a-stable motion starting off from either a standard Poisson random field or from the equilibrium distribution for intermediate dimensions a<d<2a. The limit processes are determined sub-fractional and fractional Brownian motion respectively.
The occupation time of an age-dependent branching particle system in $\Rd$ is considered, where the initial population is a Poisson random field and the particles are subject to symmetric $α$-stable migration, critical binary branching and random lifetimes. Two regimes of lifetime distributions are considered: lifetimes with finite mean and lifetimes belonging to the normal domain of attraction of a $γ$-stable law, $γ\in(0,1)$. It is shown that in dimensions $d>αγ$ for the heavy-tailed lifetimes case, and $d>α$ for finite mean lifetimes, the occupation time proccess satisfies a strong law of l…
Limit theorems are presented for the rescaled occupation time fluctuation process of a critical finite variance branching particle system in $\mathbb{R}^{d}$ with symmetric $α$-stable motion starting off from either a standard Poisson random field or the equilibrium distribution for critical $d=2α$ and large $d>2α$ dimensions. The limit processes are generalised Wiener processes. The obtained convergence is in space-time, finite-dimensional distributions sense. With the addtional assumption on the branching law we obtain functional convergence.
We study the limiting occupation density process for a large number of critical and driftless branching random walks. We show that the rescaled occupation densities of $\lfloor sN\rfloor$ branching random walks, viewed as a function-valued, increasing process $\{g_{s}^{N}\}_{s\ge 0}$, converges weakly to a pure jump process in the Skorohod space $\mathbb D([0, +\infty), \mathcal C_{0}(\mathbb R))$, as $N\to\infty$. Moreover, the jumps of the limiting process consist of i.i.d. copies of an Integrated super-Brownian Excursion (ISE) density, rescaled and weighted by the jump sizes in a real-value…
We establish limit theorems for re-scaled occupation time fluctuations of a sequence of branching particle systems in $\R^d$ with anisotropic space motion and weakly degenerate splitting ability. In the case of large dimensions, our limit processes lead to a new class of operator-scaling Gaussian random fields with non-stationary increments. In the intermediate and critical dimensions, the limit processes have spatial structures analogous to (but more complicated than) those arising from the critical branching particle system without degeneration considered by Bojdecki et al.{\it Stochastic Pr…
In the paper the rescaled occupation time fluctuation process of a certain empirical system is investigated. The system consists of particles evolving independently according to α-stable motion in R^d, α<d<2α. The particles split according to the binary critical branching law with intensity V>0. We study how the limit behaviour of the fluctuations of the occupation time depends on the \emph{initial particle configuration}. We obtain a functional central limit theorem for a vast class of infinitely divisible distributions. Our findings extend and put in a unified setting results which previousl…
We consider a branching system consisting of particles moving according to a Markov family in $\Rd$ and undergoing subcritical branching with a constant rate $V>0$. New particles immigrate to the system according to homogeneous space-time Poisson random field. The process of the fluctuations of the rescaled occupation time is studied with very mild assumptions on the Markov family. In this general setting a functional central limit theorem is proved. The subcriticality of the branching law is crucial for the limit behaviour and in a sense overwhelms the properties of the particles' motion. It …
In this paper we consider two related stochastic models. The first one is a branching system consisting of particles moving according to a Markov family in R^d and undergoing subcritical branching with a constant rate of V>0. New particles immigrate to the system according to a homogeneous space time Poisson random field. The second model is the superprocess corresponding to the branching particle system. We study rescaled occupation time process and the process of its fluctuations with very mild assumptions on the Markov family. In the general setting a functional central limit theorem as wel…
We establish limit theorems for the fluctuations of the rescaled occupation time of a $(d,α,β)$-branching particle system. It consists of particles moving according to a symmetric $α$-stable motion in $\mathbb{R}^d$. The branching law is in the domain of attraction of a (1+$β$)-stable law and the initial condition is an equilibrium random measure for the system (defined below). In the paper we treat separately the cases of intermediate $α/β<d<(1+β)α/β$, critical $d=(1+β)α/β$ and large $d>(1+β)α/β$ dimensions. In the most interesting case of intermediate dimensions we obtain a version of a frac…
We show that the centred occupation time process of the origin of a system of critical binary branching random walks in dimension $d\ge 3$, started off either from a Poisson field or in equilibrium, when suitably normalized, converges to a Brownian motion in $d\ge4$. In $d=3$, the limit process is a fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter 3/4 when starting in equilibrium, and a related Gaussian process when starting from a Poisson field. For (dependent) branching random walks with state dependent branching rate we obtain convergence in f.d.d. to the same limit process, and for $d=3$ al…
We compute that the growth of the origin occupation-time variance up to time t in dimension d=2 with respect to asymmetric simple exclusion in equilibrium with density 1/2 is in a certain sense at least t(log(log t)) for general rates, and at least t(log t)^{1/2} for rates which are asymmetric only in the direction of one of the axes. These estimates are consistent with conjectures with respect to the transition function and variance of 'second-class' particles.
We consider particle systems in locally compact Abelian groups with particles moving according to a process with symmetric stationary independent increments and undergoing one and two levels of critical branching. We obtain long time fluctuation limits for the occupation time process of the one-and two-level systems. We give complete results for the case of finite variance branching, where the fluctuation limits are Gaussian random fields, and partial results for an example of infinite variance branching, where the fluctuation limits are stable random fields. The asymptotics of the occupation …
The $(d,α,β,γ)$-branching particle system consists of particles moving in $R^d$ according to a symmetric $α$-stable Lévy process $(0<α\leq 2)$, splitting with a critical $(1+β)$-branching law $(0<β\leq 1)$, and starting from an inhomogeneous Poisson random measure with intensity measure $μ_γ(dx)=dx/(1+|x|^γ), γ\geq 0$. By means of time rescaling $T$ and Poisson intensity measure $H_Tμ_γ$, occupation time fluctuation limits for the system as $T\to\infty$ have been obtained in two special cases: Lebesgue measure ($γ=0$, the homogeneous case), and finite measures $(γ>d)$. In some cases $H_T\equiv…

We study occupancy counts for the critical nearest-neighbor branching random walk on the $d$-dimensional lattice, conditioned on non-extinction. For $d\geq 3$, Lalley and Zheng (2011) showed that the properly scaled joint distribution of the number of sites occupied by $j$ generation-$n$ particles, $j=1,2,\ldots$, converges in distribution as $n$ goes to infinity, to a deterministic multiple of a single exponential random variable. The limiting exponential variable can be understood as the classical Yaglom limit of the total population size of generation $n$. Here we study the second order flu…
Consider a critical nearest neighbor branching random walk on the $d$-dimensional integer lattice initiated by a single particle at the origin. Let $G_{n}$ be the event that the branching random walk survives to generation $n$. We obtain limit theorems conditional on the event $G_{n}$ for a variety of occupation statistics: (1) Let $V_{n}$ be the maximal number of particles at a single site at time $n$. If the offspring distribution has finite $α$th moment for some integer $α\geq 2$, then in dimensions 3 and higher, $V_n=O_p(n^{1/α})$; and if the offspring distribution has an exponentially dec…
Occupation time fluctuation limits of particle systems in R^d with independent motions (symmetric stable Levy process, with or without critical branching) have been studied assuming initial distributions given by Poisson random measures (homogeneous and some inhomogeneous cases). In this paper, with d=1 for simplicity, we extend previous results to a wide class of initial measures obeying a quasi-homogeneity property, which includes as special cases homogeneous Poisson measures and many deterministic measures (simple example: one atom at each point of Z), by means of a new unified approach. In…
We observe the Galton-Watson Branching Processes. Limit properties of transition functions and their convergence to invariant measures are investigated.
It is proved in this paper that Riemann-Liouville processes can arise from the temporal structures of the scaled occupation time fluctuation limits of the site-dependent (d,α,σ(x))branching particle systems in the case of 1=d<α<2 and \int_{\R}σ(x)\d x<\infty.
With respect to a class of long-range exclusion processes on $\mathbb{Z}^d$, with single particle transition rates of order $|\cdot|^{-(d+α)}$, starting under Bernoulli invariant measure $ν_ρ$ with density $ρ$, we consider the fluctuation behavior of occupation times at a vertex and more general additive functionals. Part of our motivation is to investigate the dependence on $α$, $d$ and $ρ$ with respect to the variance of these functionals and associated scaling limits. In the case the rates are symmetric, among other results, we find the scaling limits exhaust a range of fractional Brownian …
We investigate an application of slowly varying functions (in sense of Karamata) in the theory of Markov branching process. We treat the critical case so that the infinitesimal generating function of the process has the infinite second moment, but it regularly varies with the remainder. We improve the Basic Lemma of the theory of critical Markov branching process and refine known limit results.
In branching diffusions with immigration (BDI), particles travel on independent diffusion paths in $\mathbb{R}^d$, branch at position-dependent rates and leave offspring -- randomly scattered around the parent's death position -- according to position-dependent laws. We specify a set of conditions which grants ergodicity such that the invariant occupation measure is of finite total mass and admits a continuous Lebesgue density. Under discrete-time observation, BDI configurations being recorded at discrete times $iΔ$ only, $i\in\mathbb{N}_0$, we lose information about particle identities betwee…
We consider a particle system with weights and the scaling limits derived from its occupation time. We let the particles perform independent recurrent Lévy motions and we assume that their initial positions and weights are given by a Poisson point process. In the limit we obtain a number of recently discovered stationary stable self-similar processes recently studied in [SAM1] and [SAM2]. We also observe very different limit processes depending on whether the function, whose occupation time is considered, integrates to zero or not.
Subcritical catalytic branching random walk on d-dimensional lattice is studied. New theorems concerning the asymptotic behavior of distributions of local particles numbers are established. To prove the results different approaches are used including the connection between fractional moments of random variables and fractional derivatives of their Laplace transforms. In the previous papers on this subject only supercritical and critical regimes were investigated assuming finiteness of the first moment of offspring number and finiteness of the variance of offspring number, respectively. In the p…
Functional limit theorems for scaled fluctuations of occupation time processes of a sequence of critical branching particle systems in $\R^d$ with anisotropic space motions and strongly degenerated splitting abilities are proved in the cases of critical and intermediate dimensions. The results show that the limit processes are constant measure-valued Wienner processes with degenerated temporal and simple spatial structures.
This article extends the results of Fang & Zeitouni (2012a) on branching random walks (BRWs) with Gaussian increments in time inhomogeneous environments. We treat the case where the variance of the increments changes a finite number of times at different scales in [0,1] under a slight restriction. We find the asymptotics of the maximum up to an OP(1) error and show how the profile of the variance influences the leading order and the logarithmic correction term. A more general result was independently obtained by Mallein (2015b) when the law of the increments is not necessarily Gaussian. Howeve…
We continue our study of the distribution of the maximal number $X^{\ast}_k$ of offsprings amongst all individuals in a critical Galton-Watson process started with $k$ ancestors, treating the case when the reproduction law has a regularly varying tail $\bar F$ with index $-α$ for $α>2$ (and hence finite variance). We show that $X^{\ast}_k$ suitably normalized converges in distribution to a Frechet law with shape parameter $α/2$; this contrasts sharply with the case $1<α<2$ when the variance is infinite. More generally, we obtain a weak limit theorem for the offspring sequence ranked in the dec…
We study the maximal displacement of branching random walks in a class of time inhomogeneous environments. Specifically, binary branching random walks with Gaussian increments will be considered, where the variances of the increments change over time macroscopically. We find the asymptotics of the maximum up to an $O_P(1)$ (stochastically bounded) error, and focus on the following phenomena: the profile of the variance matters, both to the leading (velocity) term and to the logarithmic correction term, and the latter exhibits a phase transition.
We consider a model of Branching Brownian Motion with time-inhomogeneous variance of the form σ(t/T), where σis a strictly decreasing function. Fang and Zeitouni (2012) showed that the maximal particle's position M_T is such that M_T-v_σT is negative of order T^{-1/3}, where v_σis the integral of the function σover the interval [0,1]. In this paper, we refine we refine this result and show the existence of a function m_T, such that M_T-m_T converges in law, as T\to\infty. Furthermore, m_T=v_σT - w_σT^{1/3} - σ(1)\log T + O(1) with w_σ= 2^{-1/3}α_1 \int_0^1 σ(s)^{1/3} |σ'(s)|^{2/3}\,\dd s. Here…
We consider a Galton-Watson process $\mathbf{Z}% (n)=(Z_{1}(n),Z_{2}(n))$ with two types of particles. Particles of type 2 may produce offspring of both types while particles of type 1 may produce particles of their own type only. Let $Z_{i}(m,n)$ be the number of particles of type $i$ at time $m<n$ having offspring at time $n$. Assuming that the process is critical and that the variance of the offspring distribution may be infinite we describe the asymptotic behavior, as $m,n\rightarrow \infty $ of the law of $\mathbf{Z}(m,n)=(Z_1(m,n),Z_2(m,n))$ given $\mathbf{Z}(n)\neq \mathbf{0}$. We find …
The asymptotic normality of conditional least squares estimators for the offspring variance in critical branching processes with non-homogeneous immigration is established, under moment assumptions on both reproduction and immigration. The proofs use martingale techniques and weak convergence results in Skorokhod spaces.
We prove a functional limit theorem for the rescaled occupation time fluctuations of a $(d,α,β)$-branching particle system [particles moving in $\mathbb {R}^d$ according to a symmetric $α$-stable Lévy process, branching law in the domain of attraction of a $(1+β)$-stable law, $0<β<1$, uniform Poisson initial state] in the case of intermediate dimensions, $α/β<d<α(1+β)/β$. The limit is a process of the form $Kλξ$, where $K$ is a constant, $λ$ is the Lebesgue measure on $\mathbb {R}^d$, and $ξ=(ξ_t)_{t\geq0}$ is a $(1+β)$-stable process which has long range dependence. For $α<2$, there are two l…
We study the impact on shape parameters of an underlying Bienaymé-Galton-Watson branching process (height, width and first hitting time), of having a non-spatial branching mechanism with infinite variance. Aiming at providing a comparative study of the spread of an epidemics whose dynamics is given by the modulus of a branching Brownian motion (BBM) we then consider spatial branching processes in dimension d, not necessarily integer. The underlying branching mechanism is then either a binary branching model or one presenting infinite variance. In particular we evaluate the chance p(x) of being…
A class of branching processes in varying environments is exhibited which become extinct almost surely even though the means M_n grow fast enough so that sum M_n^{-1} is finite. In fact, such a process is constructed for every offspring distribution of infinite variance, and this establishes the converse of a previously known fact: that if a distribution has finite variance then sum M_n^{-1}=infty is equivalent to almost sure extinction. This has as an immediate consequence the converse to a theorem on equipolarity of Galton-Watson trees.
We consider the maximal displacement of one dimensional branching Brownian motion with (macroscopically) time varying profiles. For monotone decreasing variances, we show that the correction from linear displacement is not logarithmic but rather proportional to $T^{1/3}$. We conjecture that this is the worse case correction possible.
We extend results on time-rescaled occupation time fluctuation limits of the $(d,α, β)$-branching particle system $(0<α\leq 2, 0<β\leq 1)$ with Poisson initial condition. The earlier results in the homogeneous case (i.e., with Lebesgue initial intensity measure) were obtained for dimensions $d>α/ β$ only, since the particle system becomes locally extinct if $d\le α/ β$. In this paper we show that by introducing high density of the initial Poisson configuration, limits are obtained for all dimensions, and they coincide with the previous ones if $d>α/β$. We also give high-density limits for the …
We compute the posterior distributions of the initial population and parameter of binary branching processes, in the limit of a large number of generations. We compare this Bayesian procedure with a more naïve one, based on hitting times of some random walks. In both cases, central limit theorems are available, with explicit variances.
We consider a branching random walk initiated by a single particle at location 0 in which particles alternately reproduce according to the law of a Galton-Watson process and disperse according to the law of a driftless random walk on the integers. When the offspring distribution has mean 1 the branching process is critical, and therefore dies out with probability 1. We prove that if the particle jump distribution has mean zero, positive finite variance $η^{2}$, and finite $4+\varepsilon$ moment, and if the offspring distribution has positive variance $σ^{2}$ and finite third moment then the di…
We prove a general fluctuation limit theorem for Galton-Watson branching processes with immigration. The limit is a time-inhomogeneous OU type process driven by a spectrally positive Levy process. As applications of this result, we obtain some asymptotic estimates for the conditional least-squares estimator of the offspring means and variances of the offspring and immigration distributions.
We consider a critical branching particle system in $\R^d$, composed of individuals of a finite number of types $i\in\{1,...,K\}$. Each individual of type $i$ moves independently according to a symmetric $α_i$-stable motion. We assume that the particle lifetimes and offspring distributions are type-dependent. Under the usual independence assumptions in branching systems, we prove extinction theorems in the following cases: (1) all the particle lifetimes have finite mean, or (2) there is a type whose lifetime distribution has heavy tail, and the other lifetimes have finite mean. We get a more c…
We consider a supercritical symmetric continuous-time branching random walk on a multidimensional lattice with a finite number of particle generation sources of varying positive intensities without any restrictions on the variance of jumps of the underlying random walk. It is assumed that the spectrum of the evolution operator contains at least one positive eigenvalue. We prove that under these conditions the largest eigenvalue of the evolution operator is simple and determines the rate of exponential growth of particle quantities at every point on the lattice as well as on the lattice as a wh…
We analyse the splitting algorithm performance in the estimation of rare event probabilities and this in a discrete multidimensional framework. For this we assume that each threshold is partitioned into disjoint subsets and the probability for a particle to reach the next threshold will depend on the starting subset. A straightforward estimator of the rare event probability is given by the proportion of simulated particles for which the rare event occurs. The variance of this estimator we get is the sum of two parts: one part resuming the variability due to each threshold and a second part res…
Let $S_n$ be a lattice random walk with mean zero and finite variance, and let $Λ^a_n$ be its occupation measure at level $a$. In this note, we prove local limit theorems for $\Pr[S_n=x,Λ^a_n=\ell]$ and $\Pr[S_n=x|Λ^a_n=\ell]$ in the cases where $a$, $|x-a|$ and $\ell$ are either zero or at least of order $\sqrt n$. The asymptotic description of these quantities matches the corresponding probabilities for Brownian motion and its local time process. This note can be seen as a generalization of previous results by Kaigh (1975) and Uchiyama (2011). In similar fashion to these results, our method …
In this paper we study the genealogical structure of a Galton-Watson process with neutral mutations, where the initial population is large and mutation rate is small \cite{B2}. Namely, we extend in two directions the results obtained in Bertoin's work. In the critical case, we construct the version of Bertoin's model conditioned not to be extinct, and in the case with finite variance we show convergence after normalization, of allelic sub-populations towards a tree indexed CSBP with immigration. Besides, we establish the version of the limit theorems in \cite{B2}, been for the unconditioned pr…
We consider an indecomposable Galton-Watson branching process with countably infinitely many types. Assuming that the process is critical and allowing for infinite variance of the offspring sizes of some (or all) types of particles we describe the asymptotic behavior of the survival probability of the process and establish a Yaglom-type conditional limit theorem for the infinite-dimensional vector of the number of particles of all types.
Scaling limits for continuous-time branching processes with discrete state space are provided as the initial state tends to infinity. Depending on the finiteness or non-finiteness of the mean and/or the variance of the offspring distribution, the limits are in general time-inhomogeneous Gaussian processes, time-inhomogeneous generalized Ornstein-Uhlenbeck type processes or continuous-state branching processes. We also provide transfer results showing how specific asymptotic relations for the probability generating function of the offspring distribution carry over to those of the one-dimensiona…
In this paper we consider a triangular array of branching processes with non-stationary immigration. We prove a weak convergence of properly normalized branching processes with immigration to deterministic function under assumption that immigration is rowwise $ψ-$mixing and the offspring mean tends to its critical value 1, immigration mean and variance controlled by regularly varying functions. Moreover, we obtain a fluctuation limit theorem for branching process with immigration when immigration is $m-$dependent where $m$ may tend to infinity with the row index at a certain rate. In this case…
The approximation of integral type functionals is studied for discrete observations of a continuous Itô semimartingale. Based on novel approximations in the Fourier domain, central limit theorems are proved for $L^2$-Sobolev functions with fractional smoothness. An explicit $L^2$-lower bound shows that already lower order quadrature rules, such as the trapezoidal rule and the classical Riemann estimator, are rate optimal, but only the trapezoidal rule is efficient, achieving the minimal asymptotic variance.
We study branching diffusions in a bounded domain $D$ of $\mathbb{R}^d$ in which particles are killed upon hitting the boundary $\partial D$. It is known that any such process undergoes a phase transition when the branching rate $β$ exceeds a critical value: a multiple of the first eigenvalue of the generator of the diffusion. We investigate the system at criticality and show that the associated genealogical tree, when the process is conditioned to survive for a long time, converges to Aldous' Continuum Random Tree under appropriate rescaling. The result holds under only a mild assumption on t…
