We study the functional codes $C_2(X)$ defined on projective varieties $X$, in the case where $X\subset \mathbb{P}^3$ is a 1-degenerate quadric or a non-degenerate quadric (hyperbolic or elliptic). We find the minimum distance of these codes, the second weight, and the third weight. We also show the geometrical structure of the first weight and second weight codewords. One result states that the codes $C_2(X)$ defined on the elliptic quadrics are good codes according to the table of A. E. Brouwer.
We prove a result comparing the rationality of some elementary algebraic cycles introduced by Alexander Vishik, defined on orthogonal grassmannians, with the rationality of some algebraic cycles defined on fiber products of the corresponding quadric.
Let $X$ be a codimension two nonsingular subvariety of a nonsingular quadric $\Q{n}$ of dimension $n\geq 5$. We classify such subvarieties when they are scrolls. We also classify them when the degree $d\leq 10$. Both results were known when $n=4$. Keywords: Classification; liaison; low codimension; low degree; quadric; scroll; vector bundle
Consider a finite scheme of length l contained in a smooth quadric surface over the complex numbers. We determine the number of linearly independent curves passing through the scheme, of degree at least l - 1.
Special birational transformations $Φ:\p^r\da Z$ defined by quadric hypersurfaces are studied by means of the variety of lines $\mathcal L_z\subset\p^{r-1}$ passing through a general point $z\in Z$. Classification results are obtained when $Z$ is either a Grassmannian of lines, or the 10-dimensional spinor variety, or the $E_6$-variety. In the particular case of quadro-quadric transformations, we extend the well-known classification of Ein and Shepherd-Barron coming from Zak's classification of Severi varieties to a wider class of prime Fano manifolds $Z$. Combining both results, we get a clas…
We study the maximum likelihood (ML) degree of linear concentration models in algebraic statistics. We relate it to an intersection problem on the variety of complete quadrics. This allows us to provide an explicit, basic, albeit of high computational complexity, formula for the ML-degree. The variety of complete quadrics is an exact analog for symmetric matrices of the permutohedron variety for the diagonal matrices.
In this paper we classify all potentially G-birationally rigid del Pezzo threefolds of degree 4 and their automorphism groups and prove the G-birational rigidity of one of them
Let $C \subset \mathbb {P}^r$ a general embedding of prescribed degree of a general smooth curve with prescribed genus. Here we prove that either $h^0(\mathbb {P}^r,\mathcal {I}_C(2)) =0$ or $h^1(\mathbb {P}^r,\mathcal {I}_C(2)) =0$ (a problem called the Maximal Rank Conjecture in the range of quadrics).
A classical problem in the theory of projective curves is the classification of all their possible genera in terms of the degree and the dimension of the space where they are embedded. Fixed integers $r,d,s$, Castelnuovo-Halphen's theory states a sharp upper bound for the genus of a non-degenerate, reduced and irreducible curve of degree $d$ in $\mathbb P^r$, under the condition of being not contained in a surface of degree $<s$. This theory can be generalized in several ways. For instance, fixed integers $r,d,k$, one may ask for the maximal genus of a curve of degree $d$ in $\mathbb P^r$, not…
It is proved that the degree of a morphism from a smooth projective n-fold with Picard number one to a smooth n-quadric is bounded (provided, of course, that n is at least three). Actually it has been proved some years ago, but I have never written down the proof, until J.-M. Hwang suggested, recently, that I do.
We introduce a compact moduli of noncommutative quadrics, and show that it is the weighted projective space of weight (2,4,4,6). We also introduce a compact moduli of potentials for the conifold quiver, and show that it is the weighted projective space of weight (1,2,3,4). There is a natural morphism from the latter to the former, which is finite of degree 4.
We study the variety of common tangents for up to four quadric surfaces in projective three-space, with particular regard to configurations of four quadrics admitting a continuum of common tangents. We formulate geometrical conditions in the projective space defined by all complex quadric surfaces which express the fact that several quadrics are tangent along a curve to one and the same quadric of rank at least three, and called, for intuitive reasons: a basket. Lines in any ruling of the latter will be common tangents. These considerations are then restricted to spheres in Euclidean three-spa…
We study the functional codes of second order defined by G. Lachaud on $\mathcal{X} \subset {\mathbb{P}}^4(\mathbb{F}_q)$ a quadric of rank($\mathcal{X}$)=3,4,5 or a non-degenerate hermitian variety. We give some bounds for %$# \mathcal{X}_{Z(\mathcal{Q})}(\mathbb{F}_{q})$, the number of points of quadratic sections of $\mathcal{X}$, which are the best possible and show that codes defined on non-degenerate quadrics are better than those defined on degenerate quadrics. We also show the geometric structure of the minimum weight codewords and estimate the second weight of these codes. For $\mathc…
We establish connections between: the maximum likelihood degree (ML-degree) for linear concentration models, the algebraic degree of semidefinite programming (SDP), and Schubert calculus for complete quadrics. We prove a conjecture by Sturmfels and Uhler on the polynomiality of the ML-degree. We also prove a conjecture by Nie, Ranestad and Sturmfels providing an explicit formula for the degree of SDP. The interactions between the three fields shed new light on the asymptotic behaviour of enumerative invariants for the variety of complete quadrics. We also extend these results to spaces of gene…
We consider quadric surface fibrations over curves, defined over algebraically closed and finite fields. Our goal is to understand, in geometric terms, spaces of sections for such fibrations. We analyze varieties of maximal isotropic subspaces in the fibers as P^1-bundles over the discriminant double cover. When the P^1-bundle is suitably stable, we deduce effective estimates for the heights of sections over finite fields satisfying various approximation conditions. We also discuss the behavior of the spaces of sections as the base of the fibration acquires singularities.
Given a degree one del Pezzo surface with canonical singularities, the linear series generated by twice the anti-canonical divisor exhibits the surface as the double cover of the quadric cone branched along a sextic curve. It is natural to ask if this description extends to the boundary of a compactification of the moduli space of degree one del Pezzo surfaces. The goal of this paper is to show that this is indeed the case. In particular, we give an explicit classification of the boundary of the moduli space of anti-canonically polarized broken del Pezzo surfaces of degree one as double covers…
By means of an {\it ad hoc} modification of the so-called ``Castelnuovo-Harris analysis" we derive an upper bound for the genus of integral curves on the three dimensional nonsingular quadric which lie on an integral surface of degree $2k$, as a function of $k$ and the degree $d$ of the curve. In order to obtain this we revisit the Uniform Position Principle to make its use computation-free. The curves which achieve this bound can be conveniently characterized. Keywords: Castelnuovo-Harris Bound, Uniform Position Principle, Low Codimension, Linkage
In [Rie08], the second author defined a Landau-Ginzburg model for homogeneous spaces G/P. In this paper, we reformulate this LG model in the case of the odd-dimensional quadric X=Q_{2m-1}. Namely we introduce a regular function Wcan on a variety Xcan x C*, where Xcan is the complement of a particular anticanonical divisor in the the projective space CP^{2m-1}=P(H*(X,C)*). Firstly we prove that the Jacobi ring associated to Wcan is isomorphic to the quantum cohomology ring of the quadric, and that this isomorphism is compatible with the identification of homogeneous coordinates on Xcan with ele…
We introduce a family of standard bigraded binomial Artinian Gorenstein algebras, whose combinatoric structure characterizes the ones presented by quadrics. These algebras provide, for all socle degree grater than two and in sufficiently large codimension with respect to the socle degree, counter-examples to Migliore-Nagel conjectures, see \cite{MN1} and \cite{MN2}. One of them predicted that Artinian Gorenstein algebras presented by quadratics should satisfy the weak Lefschetz property. We also prove a generalization of a Hessian criterion for the Lefschetz properties given by Watanabe, see \…
For any pencil of conics or higher-dimensional quadrics over the rationals, with all degenerate fibres defined over the rationals, we show that the Brauer-Manin obstruction controls weak approximation. The proof is based on the Hasse principle and weak approximation for some special intersections of quadrics, which is a consequence of recent advances in additive combinatorics.
We give uniform upper bounds for the number of rational points of height at most $B$ on non-singular complete intersections of two quadrics in $\mathbb{P}^3$ defined over $\mathbb{Q}$. To do this, we combine determinant methods with descent arguments.
We study the stable rationality problem for quadric and cubic surface bundles over surfaces from the point of view of the degeneration method for the Chow group of 0-cycles. Our main result is that a very general hypersurface X of bidegree (2,3) in P^2 x P^3 is not stably rational. Via projections onto the two factors, X is a cubic surface bundle over P^2 and a conic bundle over P^3, and we analyze the stable rationality problem from both these points of view. This provides another example of a smooth family of rationally connected fourfolds with rational and nonrational fibers. Finally, we in…
A subspace arrangement in a vector space is a finite collection of vector subspaces. Similarly, a configuration of linear spaces in a projective space is a finite collection of linear subspaces. In this paper we study the degree 2 part of the ideal of such objects. More precisely, for a generic configuration of linear spaces L we determine HF(L,2), i.e. the Hilbert function of L in degree 2.
Given two vector bundles E and F on a variety X and a morphism from Sym^2(E) to F, we compute the cohomology class of the locus in X where the kernel of this morphism contains a quadric of prescribed rank. Our formulas have many applications to moduli theory: (i) we find a simple proof of Borcherds' result that the Hodge class on the moduli space of polarized K3 surfaces of fixed genus is of Noether-Lefschetz type, (ii) we construct an explicit canonical divisor on the Hurwitz space parametrizing degree k covers of the projective line from curves of genus 2k-1, (iii) we provide a closed formul…
We prove that the degree of a nonconstant morphism from a smooth projective 3-fold $X$ with Néron-Severi group ${\bf Z}$ to a smooth 3-dimensional quadric is bounded in terms of numerical invariants of $X$. In the special case where $X$ is a 3-dimensional cubic we show that there are no such morphisms. The main tool in the proof is Miyaoka's bound on the number of double points of a surface.
This paper, motivated by problems in Diophantine analysis which can be formulated as problems of finding rational points on the intersection of two quadrics, presents an explicit construction of a rationally defined isomorphism (biregular mapping) between a rationally defined smooth intersection of two quadrics in projective three-space and an elliptic curve in Weierstrass form which maps a distinguished rational point to the point at infinity. The usual approach of transforming a smooth plane cubic to a curve in Weierstrass form by mapping an inflection point to the point at infinity in a par…
Three-dimensional del Pezzo varieties of degree 2 are double covers of projective space $\mathbb{P}^{3}$ branced in a quadric. In this paper we prove that if a del Pezzo variety of degree 2 has exactly 15 nodes then the corresponding quadric is a hyperplane section of the Igusa quartic or, equivalently, all such del Pezzo varieties are members of one particular linear system on the Coble fourfold. Their automorphism groups are induced from the automorphism group of Coble fourfold. Also we classify all $G$-birationally rigid varieties of such type.
Let $π\colon\mathcal{X}\to B$ be a family over a smooth connected analytic variety $B$, not necessarily compact, whose general fiber $X$ is smooth of dimension $n$, with irregularity $\geq n+1$ and such that the image of the canonical map of $X$ is not contained in any quadric of rank $\leq 2n+3$. We prove that if the Albanese map of $X$ is of degree $1$ onto its image then the fibers of $π\colon\mathcal{X}\to B$ are birational under the assumption that all the $1$-forms and all the $n$-forms of a fiber are holomorphically liftable to $\mathcal{X}$. Moreover we show that generic Torelli holds …
Let an indirectly measurable variable be represented as a function of a finite number of directly measurable variables . In our previous researches we: 1) represented the maximum inaccuracies of in first degree of approximation as linear functions of the inaccuracies of ; 2) defined the spaces of the maximum inaccuracies and we defined a dimensionless scale for quality (accuracy) evaluation of an experiment in them; 3) introduced the maximum inaccuracies in second degree of approximation. In the current paper we prove that the maximum inaccuracies of in second degree of approximation are quadr…
A tensor product surface $\mathscr{S}$ is an algebraic surface that is defined as the closure of the image of a rational map $ϕ$ from $\mathbb{P}^1\times \mathbb{P}^1$ to $\mathbb{P}^3$. We provide new determinantal representations of $\mathscr{S}$ under the assumptions that $ϕ$ is generically injective and its base points are finitely many and locally complete intersections. These determinantal representations are matrices that are built from the coefficients of linear relations (syzygies) and quadratic relations of the bihomogeneous polynomials defining $ϕ$. Our approach relies on a formaliz…
We prove a criterion of nonsingularity of a complete intersection of two fiberwise quadrics in a scroll over $P^1$. As a corollary we derive the following addition to the Alexeev theorem on rationality of standard Del Pezzo fibrations of degree 4 over $P^1$: we prove that any fibration of this kind with the topological Euler characteristic -4 is rational.
We make explicit the equations of any projective $PGL_2(\C)$-variety defined by quadrics. We study their zero-locus and their relationship with the geometry of the Veronese curve.
We study solutions of a homogeneous quadratic equation $q(x_0,\dots, x_n)=0$, defined over a field $K$, where the $x_i$ are themselves homogeneous polynomials of some degree $d$ in $r+1$ variables. Equivalently, we are looking at rational maps from projective $r$-space $P^r$ to a quadric hypersurface $Q$, defined over a field $K$. The space of maps of $P^1$ to a quadric $Q$ is stably birational to $Q$ if $d$ is even and to the orthogonal Grassmannian of lines in $Q$ if $d$ is odd. Most of the paper is devoted to obtaining similar descriptions for the spaces parametrizing maps of $P^2$ to quadr…
We give necessary and sufficient criteria for a smooth Enriques surface S in P^r to be scheme-theoretically an intersection of quadrics. Moreover we prove in many cases that, when S contains plane cubic curves, the intersection of the quadrics containing S is the union of S and the 2-planes spanned by the plane cubic curves. We also give a new (very quick) proof of the projective normality of S if the degree of S is at least 12.
Let $ \mathcal{D} = \{D_{1}, \ldots, D_{\ell}\} $ be an arrangement of smooth hypersurfaces with normal crossings on the complex projective space $ \mathbb{P}^{n} $ and let $ Ω^{1}_{\mathbb{P}^{n}}(log \mathcal{D}) $ be the logarithmic bundle attached to it. Our aim is to study the injectivity of the correspondence $ \mathcal{D} \longrightarrow Ω^{1}_{\mathbb{P}^{n}}(log \mathcal{D}) $. In order to do that, we first show that $ Ω^{1}_{\mathbb{P}^{n}}(log \mathcal{D}) $ admits a resolution of length $ 1 $ depending on the degrees and on the equations of $ D_{1}, \ldots, D_{\ell} $. Then, we pro…
We consider the involution changing the sign of two coordinates in 4-dimensional projective space. The intersection S of invariant cubic and quadric hypersurfaces in P^4 is a K3-surface with the induced symplectomorphic action on its second cohomology group. The Bloch-Beilinson conjecture predicts that the induced action on the second Chow group CH^2(S) must be the identity. Generalizing the method developed by C. Voisin we non-conjecturally prove the identity action on CH^2 for K3-surfaces as above. Then we look at a smooth invariant cubic hypersurface C in P^4 and project it from the 1-dimen…
Let k be a perfect field. Recently J.-L. Colliot-Thélène showed that two pointless quadric surfaces over k are birationally equivalent if and only if they are isomorphic. We show that this result holds for arbitrary del Pezzo surfaces of degree $8$ with the Picard number $1$, and describe minimal surfaces birationally equivalent to a given pointless del Pezzo surface of degree $8$.
Ovoids of the non-degenerate quadric Q(4,q) of PG(4,q) have been studied since the end of the '80s. They are rare objects and, beside the classical example given by an elliptic quadric, only three classes are known for q odd, one class for $q$ even, and a sporadic example for $ìq=3^5. It is well known that to any ovoid of Q(4,q) a bivariate polynomial f(x,y) can be associated. In this paper we classify ovoids of Q(4,q) whose corresponding polynomial f(x,y) has 'low degree' compared with q, in particular deg(f)<(q/6.3)^(3/13)-1. Finally, as an application, {two classes} of permutation polynomia…
We study birational transformations P^n--->S \subseteq P^N defined by linear systems of quadrics whose base locus is smooth and irreducible of dimension \leq3 and whose image S is sufficiently regular.
We compute Seshadri constants $\eps(X):= \eps(Ø_X(1))$ on $K3$ surfaces $X$ of degrees 6 and 8. Moreover, more generally, we prove that if $X$ is any embedded $K3$ surface of degree $2r-2 \geq 8$ in $\PP^r$ not containing lines, then $1 < \eps(X) <2$ if and only if the homogeneous ideal of $X$ is not generated by only quadrics (in which case $\eps(X)=3/2$).
We show that the birationality class of a quadric surface bundle over $\mathbb{P}^2$ is determined by its associated cokernel sheaves. As an application, we discuss stable-rationality of very general quadric bundles over $\mathbb{P}^2$ with discriminant curves of fixed degree. In particular, we construct explicit models of these bundles for some discriminant data. Among others, we obtain various birational models of a nodal Gushel-Mukai fourfold, as well as of a cubic fourfold containing a plane. Finally, we prove stable irrationality of several types of quadric surface bundles.
Let T -> S be a finite flat morphism of degree two between regular integral schemes of dimension at most two (and with 2 invertible), having regular branch divisor D. We establish a bijection between Azumaya quaternion algebras on T and quadric surface bundles over S with simple degeneration along D. This is a manifestation of the exceptional isomorphism A_1^2 = D_2 degenerating to the exceptional isomorphism A_1 = B_1. In one direction, the even Clifford algebra yields the map. In the other direction, we show that the classical algebra norm functor can be uniquely extended over the discrimina…
We isolate a class of smooth rational cubic fourfolds X containing a plane whose associated quadric surface bundle does not have a rational section. This is equivalent to the nontriviality of the Brauer class of the even Clifford algebra over the K3 surface S of degree 2 arising from X. Specifically, we show that in the moduli space of cubic fourfolds, the intersection of divisors C_8 and C_14 has five irreducible components. In the component corresponding to the existence of a tangent conic to the sextic degeneration curve of the quadric bundle, we prove that the general member is both pfaffi…
Let $q$ be an anisotropic quadratic form defined over a general field $F$. In this article, we formulate a new upper bound for the isotropy index of $q$ after scalar extension to the function field of an arbitrary quadric. On the one hand, this bound offers a refinement of a celebrated bound established in earlier work of Karpenko-Merkurjev and Totaro; on the other, it is a direct generalization of Karpenko's theorem on the possible values of the first higher isotropy index. We prove its validity in two important cases: (i) the case where $\mathrm{char}(F) \neq 2$, and (ii) the case where $\ma…
We consider artinian algebras $A=\mathbb{C}[x_0,\ldots,x_m]/I$, with $I$ generated by a regular sequence of homogeneous forms of the same degree $d\geq 2$. We show that the multiplication by a general linear form from $A_{d-1}$ to $A_d$ is injective. We prove that the Weak Lefschetz Property holds for artinian complete intersection algebras as above, with $d=2$ and $m\leq 4$. Apparently, this was previously known only for $m\leq 3$. Although we are proposing only very limited progress towards the WLP conjecture for complete intersections, we hope that the methods of the present article can ill…
We study special linear systems of surfaces of $\mathbb{P}^3$ interpolating nine points in general position having a quadric as fixed component. By performing degenerations in the blown-up space, we interpret the quadric obstruction in terms of linear obstructions for a quasi-homogeneous class. By degeneration we also prove a Nagata type result for $\mathbb{P}^2$ that implies a base locus lemma for the quadric. As an application we establish Laface-Ugaglia Conjecture for linear systems with multiplicities bounded by 8 and for homogeneous linear systems with multiplicity m and degree up to 2m+1…
