In this paper, we prove a version of Freyd's generating hypothesis for triangulated categories: if D is a cocomplete triangulated category and S is an object in D whose endomorphism ring is graded commutative and concentrated in degree zero, then S generates (in the sense of Freyd) the thick subcategory determined by S if and only if the endomorphism ring of S is von Neumann regular. As a corollary, we obtain that the generating hypothesis is true in the derived category of a commutative ring R if and only if R is von Neumann regular. We also investigate alternative formulations of the generating hypothesis in the derived category. Finally, we give a characterization of the Noetherian stable homotopy categories in which the generating hypothesis is true.
We state the generating hypothesis in the homotopy category of G-spectra for a compact Lie group G, and prove that if G is finite, then the generating hypothesis implies the strong generating hypothesis, just as in the non-equivariant case. We also give an explicit counterexample to the generating hypothesis in the category of rational S^1-equivariant spectra.
Freyd's generating hypothesis, interpreted in the stable module category of a finite p-group G, is the statement that a map between finite-dimensional kG-modules factors through a projective if the induced map on Tate cohomology is trivial. We show that Freyd's generating hypothesis holds for a non-trivial finite p-group G if and only if G is either C_2 or C_3. We also give various conditions which are equivalent to the generating hypothesis.
We construct a "diagonal" cofibrantly generated model structre on the category of simplicial objects in the category of topological categories sCat_{Top}, which is the category of diagrams [Δ^{op}, Cat_{Top}]. Moreover, we prove that the diagonal model structures is left proper and cellular. We also prove that the category of \infty-groupoids (the full subcategory of topological categories) has a cofibrantly generated model structure and is Quillen equivalent to the model category of simplicial sets, which proves the Grothendieck's homotopy hypothesis.
We show that a strong form (the fully faithful version) of the generating hypothesis, introduced by Freyd in algebraic topology, holds in the derived category of a ring R if and only if R is von Neumann regular. This extends results of the second author. We also characterize rings for which the original form (the faithful version) of the generating hypothesis holds in the derived category of R. These must be close to von Neumann regular in a precise sense, and, given any of a number of finiteness hypotheses, must be von Neumann regular. However, we construct an example of such a ring that is n…
We construct a number of different examples of non-Noetherian graded rings that are injective as modules over themselves (or have some related but weaker properties). We discuss how these are related to the theory of triangulated categories, and to Freyd's Generating Hypothesis in stable homotopy theory.
Freyd's generating hypothesis for the stable module category of a non-trivial finite group G is the statement that a map between finitely generated kG-modules that belongs to the thick subcategory generated by k factors through a projective if the induced map on Tate cohomology is trivial. In this paper we show that Freyd's generating hypothesis fails for kG when the Sylow p-subgroup of G has order at least 4 using almost split sequences. By combining this with our earlier work, we obtain a complete answer to Freyd's generating hypothesis for the stable module category of a finite group. We al…
The invertibility hypothesis for a monoidal model category S asks that localizing an S-enriched category with respect to an equivalence results in an weakly equivalent enriched category. This is the most technical among the axioms for S to be an excellent model category in the sense of Lurie, who showed that the category of S-enriched categories then has a model structure with characterizable fibrant objects. We use a universal property of cubical sets, as a monoidal model category, to show that the invertibility hypothesis is consequence of the other axioms.
We show that if $2k\geq n$, then a k-connected weak n-category $A$ can be ``delooped'' to a k+1-connected weak n+1-category $Y$ with $Hom_Y(y,y)\cong A$. This is the essential part of the ``stabilization hypothesis'' of Baez and Dolan q-alg/9503002, math/9802029.
In this paper, we construct a version of Auslander-Reiten sequences for the $K(n)$-local stable homotopy category. In particular, the role of the Auslander-Reiten translation is played by the local Brown-Comenetz duality functor. As an application, we produce counterexamples to the $K(n)$-local generating hypothesis for all heights $n>0$ and all primes. Furthermore, our methods apply to other triangulated categories, as for example the derived category of quasi-coherent sheaves on a smooth projective scheme.
We introduce and study a notion of cylinder coherator similar to the notion of Grothendieck coherator which define more flexible notion of weak infinity groupoids. We show that each such cylinder coherator produces a combinatorial semi-model category of weak infinity groupoids, whose objects are all fibrant and which is in a precise sense "freely generated by an object". We show that all those semi model categories are Quillen equivalent together and Quillen to the model category of spaces. A general procedure is given to produce such coherator, and several explicit examples are presented: one…
Freyd's Generating Hypothesis is an important problem in topology with deep structural consequences for finite stable homotopy. Due to its complexity some recent work has examined analogous questions in various other triangulated categories. In this short note we analyze the question in noncommutative stable homotopy, which is a canonical generalization of finite stable homotopy. Along the way we also discuss Spanier--Whitehead duality in this extended setup.
In this paper, we show that the Thomason model structure restricts to a Quillen equivalent cofibrantly generated model structure on the category of acyclic categories, whose generating cofibrations are the same as those generating the Thomason model structure. To understand the Thomason model structure, we need to have a closer look at the (barycentric) subdivision endofunctor on the category of simplicial sets. This functor has a well known right adjoint, called Kan's Ex functor. Taking the subdivision twice and then the fundamental category yields a left adjoint of an adjunction between the …
Given a monoidal $\infty$-category $C$ equipped with a monoidal recollement, we give a simple criterion for an object in $C$ to be dualizable in terms of the dualizability of each of its factors and a projection formula relating them. Predicated on this, we then characterize dualizability in any monoidally stratified $\infty$-category in terms of stratumwise dualizability and a projection formula for the links. Using our criterion, we prove a 1-dimensional bordism hypothesis for symmetric monoidal recollements. Namely, we provide an algebraic enhancement of the 1-dimensional framed bordism $\i…
Let $G$ be a finite group and let $k$ be a field whose characteristic $p$ divides the order of $G$. Freyd's generating hypothesis for the stable module category of $G$ is the statement that a map between finite-dimensional $kG$-modules in the thick subcategory generated by $k$ factors through a projective if the induced map on Tate cohomology is trivial. We show that if $G$ has periodic cohomology then the generating hypothesis holds if and only if the Sylow $p$-subgroup of $G$ is $C_2$ or $C_3$. We also give some other conditions that are equivalent to the GH for groups with periodic cohomolo…
We prove a stabilization theorem for algebras of n-operads in a monoidal model category. It implies a version of Baez-Dolan stabilization hypothesis for Rezk's weak n-categories and some other stabilization results.
We propose a new notion of `n-category with duals', which we call a Whitney n-category. There are two motivations. The first is that Baez and Dolan's Tangle Hypothesis is (almost) tautological when interpreted as a statement about Whitney categories. The second is that we can functorially construct `fundamental Whitney n-categories' from each smooth stratified space X. These are obtained by considering the homotopy theory of smooth maps into X which are transversal to all strata. This makes concrete another idea of Baez and Dolan's which is that a suitable version of homotopy theory for strati…
We show that conically smooth stratified spaces embed fully faithfully into $\infty$-categories. This articulates a stratified generalization of the homotopy hypothesis proposed by Grothendieck. As such, each $\infty$-category defines a stack on conically smooth stratified spaces, and we identify the descent conditions it satisfies. These include $\mathbb{R}^1$-invariance and descent for open covers and blow-ups, analogous to sheaves for the h-topology in $\mathbb{A}^1$-homotopy theory. In this way, we identify $\infty$-categories as striation sheaves, which are those sheaves on conically smoo…
These lecture notes form an expanded account of a course given at the Summer School on Topology and Field Theories held at the Center for Mathematics at the University of Notre Dame, Indiana during the Summer of 2012. A similar lecture series was given in Hamburg in January 2013. The lecture notes are divided into two parts. The first part, consisting of the bulk of these notes, provides an expository account of the author's joint work with Christopher Douglas and Noah Snyder on dualizability in low-dimensional higher categories and the connection to low-dimensional topology. The cobordism hyp…
Let $A$ be a cocommutative finite dimensional Hopf algebra over the field with two elements, satisfying some mild hypothesis. We set up a descent spectral sequence which computes the Picard group of the stable category of modules over $A$. The starting point is the observation that the stable category of $A$-modules can be reconstructed, as an $\infty$-category, as the totalization of a cosimplicial $\infty$-category whose layers are related to the stable categories of modules over the quasi-elementary sub-Hopf-algebras of $A$. This leads to a spectral sequence computing the Picard group which…
We consider Hilbert series associated to modules over various categories of trees. Using the technology of Sam and Snowden, we show that these Hilbert series must be algebraic. We then apply these technical theorems to prove facts about certain natural generating functions associated to trees.
A classification is provided of functors, in particular polynomial ones, from a category with a zero object in which every object is a finite sum of copies of a generating object, into an abelian category. This classification is extended to include functors from a category with sums and a zero object, carrying a small, regular projective generator.
The paper studies the problem of the cofibrant generation of a model category. We prove that, assuming Vopěnka's principle, every cofibrantly generated model category is Quillen equivalent to a combinatorial model category. We discuss cases where this result implies that the class of weak equivalences in a cofibrantly generated model category is accessibly embedded. We also prove a necessary condition for a model category to be cofibrantly generated by a set of generating cofibrations between cofibrant objects.
We introduce the notion of algebraic fibrant objects in a general model category and establish a (combinatorial) model category structure on algebraic fibrant objects. Based on this construction we propose algebraic Kan complexes as an algebraic model for oo-groupoids and algebraic quasi-categories as an algebraic model for (oo,1)-categories. We furthermore give an explicit proof of the homotopy hypothesis.
In this paper we show that both the homotopy category of strict $n$-categories, $1\leqslant n \leqslant \infty$, and the homotopy category of Steiner's augmented directed complexes are equivalent to the category of homotopy types. In order to do so, we first prove an abstract result, based on a strategy of Fritsch and Latch, giving sufficient conditions for a nerve functor with values in simplicial sets to induce an equivalence at the level of homotopy categories. We then apply this result to strict $n$-categories and augmented directed complexes, for which the hypothesis of our theorem were e…
We define a comonad cohomology of track categories and we show it is linked by a long exact sequence to its Dwyer-Kan-Smith cohomology . Under mild hypothesis on the track category, we show that its comonad cohomology coincides, up to dimension shift, with its Dwyer-Kan-Smith cohomology, therefore obtaining an algebraic formulation of the latter. We also specialize our results to the case where the track category is a $2$-groupoid.
A concrete model of the free skew-monoidal category Fsk on a single generating object is obtained. The situation is clubbable in the sense of G.M. Kelly, so this allows a description of the free skew-monoidal category on any category. As the objects of Fsk are meaningfully bracketed words in the skew unit I and the generating object X, it is necessary to examine bracketings and to find the appropriate kinds of morphisms between them. This leads us to relationships between triangulations of polygons, the Tamari lattice, left and right bracketing functions, and the orientals. A consequence of ou…
Motivated by Freyd's famous unsolved problem in stable homotopy theory, the generating hypothesis for the stable module category of a finite group is the statement that if a map in the thick subcategory generated by the trivial representation induces the zero map in Tate cohomology, then it is stably trivial. It is known that the generating hypothesis fails for most groups. Generalizing work done for $p$-groups, we define the ghost number of a group algebra, which is a natural number that measures the degree to which the generating hypothesis fails. We describe a close relationship between gho…
Let $G$ be a compact Lie group and $\mathbf{k}$ be a field of characteristic $p \geq 0$ such that $H^* (G)$ does not have $p$-torsion. We show that a free Lagrangian orbit of a Hamiltonian $G$-action on a compact, monotone, symplectic manifold $X$ split-generates an idempotent summand of the monotone Fukaya category $\mathcal{F}(X; \mathbf{k})$ if and only if it represents a non-zero object of that summand (slightly more general results are also provided). Our result is based on: an explicit understanding of the wrapped Fukaya category $\mathcal{W}(T^*G; \mathbf{k})$ through Koszul twisted com…
An important example of a model category is the category of unbounded chain complexes of R-modules, which has as its homotopy category the derived category of the ring R. This example shows that traditional homological algebra is encompassed by Quillen's homotopical algebra. The goal of this paper is to show that more general forms of homological algebra also fit into Quillen's framework. Specifically, any set of objects in a complete and cocomplete abelian category A generates a projective class on A, which is exactly the information needed to do homological algebra in A. The main result is t…
The concept of a morphism determined by an object provides a method to construct or classify morphisms in a fixed category. We show that this works particularly well for triangulated categories having Serre duality. Another application of this concept arises from a reformulation of Freyd's generating hypothesis.
We define (iterated) coisotropic correspondences between derived Poisson stacks, and construct symmetric monoidal higher categories of derived Poisson stacks where the $i$-morphisms are given by $i$-fold coisotropic correspondences. Assuming an expected equivalence of different models of higher Morita categories, we prove that all derived Poisson stacks are fully dualizable, and so determine framed extended TQFTs by the Cobordism Hypothesis. Along the way we also prove that the higher Morita category of $E_{n}$-algebras with respect to coproducts is equivalent to the higher category of iterate…
We show that the category of projective modules over a graded commutative ring admits a triangulation with respect to module suspension if and only if the ring is a finite product of graded fields and exterior algebras on one generator over a graded field (with a unit in the appropriate degree). We also classify the ungraded commutative rings for which the category of projective modules admits a triangulation with respect to the identity suspension. Applications to two analogues of the generating hypothesis in algebraic topology are given, and we translate our results into the setting of modul…
