We completely solve the problem of enumerating combinatorially inequivalent $d$-dimensional polytopes with $d+3$ vertices. A first solution of this problem, by Lloyd, was published in 1970. But the obtained counting formula was not correct, as pointed out in the new edition of Grünbaum's book. We both correct the mistake of Lloyd and propose a more detailed and self-contained solution, relying on similar preliminaries but using then a different enumeration method involving automata. In addition, we introduce and solve the problem of counting oriented and achiral (i.e. stable under reflection) $d$-polytopes with $d+3$ vertices. The complexity of computing tables of coefficients of a given size is then analyzed. Finally, we derive precise asymptotic formulas for the numbers of $d$-polytopes, oriented $d$-polytopes and achiral $d$-polytopes with $d+3$ vertices. This refines a first asymptotic estimate given by Perles.
We classify terminal simplicial reflexive d-polytopes with 3d-1 vertices. They turn out to be smooth Fano d-polytopes. When d is even there is 1 such polytope up to isomorphism, while there are 2 when d is uneven.
We discuss the problem of counting vertices in Gelfand-Zetlin polytopes. Namely, we deduce a partial differential equation with constant coefficients on the exponential generating function for these numbers. For some particular classes of Gelfand-Zetlin polytopes, the number of vertices can be given by explicit formulas.
Some widely known compact extended formulations have the property that each vertex of the corresponding extension polytope is projected onto a vertex of the target polytope. In this paper, we prove that for heptagons with vertices in general position none of the minimum size extensions has this property. Additionally, for any d >= 2 we construct a family of d-polytopes such that at least 1/9 of all vertices of any of their minimum size extensions is not projected onto vertices.
The problem of calculating exact lower bounds for the number of $k$-faces of $d$-polytopes with $n$ vertices, for each value of $k$, and characterising the minimisers, has recently been solved for $n\le2d$. We establish the corresponding result for $n=2d+1$; the nature of the lower bounds and the minimising polytopes are quite different in this case. As a byproduct, we also characterise all $d$-polytopes with $d+3$ vertices, and only one or two edges more than the minimum.
We define an analogue of the cube and an analogue of the 5-wedge in higher dimensions, each with $2d+2$ vertices and $d^2+2d-3$ edges. We show that these two are the only minimisers of the number of edges, amongst d-polytopes with $2d+2$ vertices, for all $d$ except 4, 5 and 7. We also show that there are four sporadic minimisers in these low dimensions. We announce a partial solution to the corresponding problem for polytopes with $2d + 3$ vertices.
The Baldoni--Vergne volume and Ehrhart polynomial formulas for flow polytopes are significant in at least two ways. On one hand, these formulas are in terms of Kostant partition functions, connecting flow polytopes to this classical vector partition function fundamental in representation theory. On the other hand the Ehrhart polynomials can be read off from the volume functions of flow polytopes. The latter is remarkable since the leading term of the Ehrhart polynomial of an integer polytope is its volume! Baldoni and Vergne proved these formulas via residues. To reveal the geometry of these f…
It is known that polytopes with at most two nonsimple vertices are reconstructible from their graphs, and that $d$-polytopes with at most $d-2$ nonsimple vertices are reconstructible from their 2-skeletons. Here we close the gap between 2 and $d-2$, showing that certain polytopes with more than two nonsimple vertices are reconstructible from their graphs. In particular, we prove that reconstructibility from graphs also holds for $d$-polytopes with $d+k$ vertices and at most $d-k+3$ nonsimple vertices, provided $k\ge 5$. For $k\le4$, the same conclusion holds under a slightly stronger assumptio…
We present a number of complexity results concerning the problem of counting vertices of an integral polytope defined by a system of linear inequalities. The focus is on polytopes with small integer vertices, particularly 0/1 polytopes and half-integral polytopes.
Given a lattice polytope $P$ (with underlying lattice $\lo$), the universal counting function $\uu_P(\lo')=|P\cap \lo'|$ is defined on all lattices $\lo'$ containing $\lo$. Motivated by questions concerning lattice polytopes and the Ehrhart polynomial, we study the equation $\uu_P=\uu_Q$.
We show how to compute the Ehrhart polynomial of the free sum of two lattice polytopes containing the origin $P$ and $Q$ in terms of the enumerative combinatorics of $P$ and $Q$. This generalizes work of Beck, Jayawant, McAllister, and Braun, and follows from the observation that the weighted $h^*$-polynomial is multiplicative with respect to the free sum. We deduce that given a lattice polytope $P$ containing the origin, the problem of computing the number of lattice points in all rational dilates of $P$ is equivalent to the problem of computing the number of lattice points in all integer dil…
We have found the minimal difference $Δ(k) = \min\limits_P (f_{d-1}(P) - f_{0}(P))$ between the number of facets and the number of vertices of a $k$-neighborly $d$-polytope $P$ for the case $f_{0}(P) = d+3$: $Δ(2) = 4$, $Δ(3) = 15$, and $Δ(k) = 2 (k^2 - 1)$ for $k \ge 4$.
A basic combinatorial invariant of a convex polytope $P$ is its $f$-vector $f(P)=(f_0,f_1,\dots,f_{\dim P-1})$, where $f_i$ is the number of $i$-dimensional faces of $P$. Steinitz characterized all possible $f$-vectors of $3$-polytopes and Grünbaum characterized the pairs given by the first two entries of the $f$-vectors of $4$-polytopes. In this paper, we characterize the pairs given by the first two entries of the $f$-vectors of $5$-polytopes. The same result was also proved by Pineda-Villavicencio, Ugon and Yost independently.
The cut polytope of a graph is an important object in several fields, such as functional analysis, combinatorial optimization, and probability. For example, Sturmfels and Sullivant showed that the toric ideals of cut polytopes are useful in algebraic statistics. In the theory of lattice polytopes, the $h^{*}$-polynomial is one of the most important invariants. The necessary and sufficient condition in terms of graphs that the $h^{*}$-polynomial of a cut polytope is palindromic is known. However, except for trees, there are no classes of graphs for which the $h^{*}$-polynomial of their cut poly…
A cubical polytope is a polytope with all its facets being combinatorially equivalent to cubes. The paper is concerned with the linkedness of the graphs of cubical polytopes. A graph with at least $2k$ vertices is $k$-linked if, for every set of $2k$ distinct vertices organised in arbitrary $k$ pairs of vertices, there are $k$ vertex-disjoint paths joining the vertices in the pairs. Larman and Mani in 1970 proved that simplicial $d$-polytopes, polytopes with all their facets being combinatorially equivalent to simplices, are $\floor{(d+1)/2}$-linked; this is the maximum possible linkedness giv…
This paper is devoted to the study of lower and upper bounds for the number of vertices of the polytope of $n\times n\times n$ stochastic tensors (i.e., triply stochastic arrays of dimension $n$). By using known results on polytopes (i.e., the Upper and Lower Bound Theorems), we present some new lower and upper bounds. We show that the new upper bound is tighter than the one recently obtained by Chang, Paksoy and Zhang [Ann. Funct. Anal. 7 (2016), no.~3, 386--393] and also sharper than the one in Linial and Luria's [Discrete Comput. Geom. 51 (2014), no.~1, 161--170]. We demonstrate that the an…
We expand on a result of Barvinok and Hartigan to derive asymptotic formulas for the number of integer and binary integer points in a wide class of multi-index $k_1\times k_2\times \ldots \times k_ν$ transportation polytopes. A simple closed form approximation is given as the $k_j$s go to infinity.
Consider the Birkhoff polytope of n by n doubly-stochastic matrices. As the Birkhoff-von Neumann theorem famously states, its vertex set coincides with the set of all n by n permutation matrices. Here we seek a higher-dimensional analog of this basic fact. Namely, consider the polytope which consists of all tristochastic arrays of order n. These are n by n by n arrays with nonnegative entries in which every line sums to 1. What can be said about its vertex set? It is well-known that an order-n Latin square may be viewed as a tristochastic array where every line contains n-1 zeros and a single …
We present a common generalization of counting lattice points in rational polytopes and the enumeration of proper graph colorings, nowhere-zero flows on graphs, magic squares and graphs, antimagic squares and graphs, compositions of an integer whose parts are partially distinct, and generalized latin squares. Our method is to generalize Ehrhart's theory of lattice-point counting to a convex polytope dissected by a hyperplane arrangement. We particularly develop the applications to graph and signed-graph coloring, compositions of an integer, and antimagic labellings.
In this note we prove that the number of combinatorial types of $d$-polytopes with $d+1+α$ vertices and $d+1+β$ facets is bounded by a constant independent of $d$.
Blind and Mani, and later Kalai, showed that the face lattice of a simple polytope is determined by its graph, namely its $1$-skeleton. Call a vertex of a $d$-polytope \emph{nonsimple} if the number of edges incident to it is more than $d$. We show that (1) the face lattice of any $d$-polytope with at most two nonsimple vertices is determined by its $1$-skeleton; (2) the face lattice of any $d$-polytope with at most $d-2$ nonsimple vertices is determined by its $2$-skeleton; and (3) for any $d>3$ there are two $d$-polytopes with $d-1$ nonsimple vertices, isomorphic $(d-3)$-skeleta and nonisomo…
Let $X$ be a configuration of $n$ points in $\mathbb{R}^d$. What is the maximum number of vertices that $conv(T(X))$ can have among all the possible permissible projective transformations $T$? In this paper, we investigate this and connected questions. After presenting several upper bounds, we study a closely related problem (via Gale transforms) concerning the number of minimal Radon partitions of a set of points. We then present some bounds for this number that enable us to partially answer a question due to Pach and Szegedy. We also discuss another related problem concerning the size of top…
The convex hull of the set of the incidence vectors of the matchings of a graph G is the matching polytope of the graph, M(G). The graph whose vertices and edges are the vertices and edges of M(G) is the skeleton of the matching polytope of G, denoted G(M(G)). Since the number of vertices of G(M(G)) is huge, the structural properties of these graphs have been studied in particular classes. In this paper, for an arbitrary graph G, we obtain a formulae to compute the degree of a vertex of G(M(G)) and prove that the minimum degree of G(M(G)) is equal to the number of edges of G. Also, we identify…
We prove that the number of vertices of a polytope of a particular kind is exponentially large in the dimension of the polytope. As a corollary, we prove that an n-dimensional centrally symmetric polytope with O(n) facets has 2^{Omega(n)} vertices and that the number of r-factors in a k-regular graph is exponentially large in the number of vertices of the graph provided k >2r and every cut in the graph with at least two vertices on each side has more than k/r edges.
FFLV polytopes describe monomial bases in irreducible representations of $\mathfrak{sl}_n$ and $\mathfrak{sp}_{2n}$. We study various sets of vertices of FFLV polytopes. First, we consider the special linear case. We prove the locality of the set of vertices with respect to the type $A$ Dynkin diagram. Then we describe all the permutation vertices and after that we describe all the simple vertices and prove that their number is equal to the large Schröder number. Finally, we derive analogous results for symplectic algebras.
We classify the d-dimensional simplicial, terminal, and reflexive polytopes with at least 3d-2 vertices. In particular, it turns out that these are all smooth Fano polytopes. This improves on previous results of Casagrande in 2006 and Oebro in 2008. Smooth Fano polytopes play a role in algebraic geometry and mathematical physics.
The polytope of integer partitions of $n$ is the convex hull of the corresponding $n$-dimensional integer points. Its vertices are of importance because every partition is their convex combination. Computation shows intriguing features of $v(n),$ the number of the polytope vertices: its graph has a saw-toothed shape with the highest peaks at prime $n$'s. We explain the shape of $v(n)$ by the large number of partitions of even $n$'s that were counted by N. Metropolis and P. R. Stein. These partitions are convex combinations of two others. We reveal that divisibility of $n$ by 3 also reduces the…
Let $F$ be a planar, $3$-connected graph of radius one on $p$ vertices, with $a$ vertices of degree three. We characterise all unigraphic degree sequences for such graphs, when $a\geq 3$ and $p$ is large enough with respect to $a$. This complements the work of \cite{mafpo4} for $a\leq 3$.
We describe a construction for d-polytopes generalising the well known stacking operation. The construction is applied to produce 2-simplicial and 2-simple 4-polytopes with g_2=0 on any number of n >= 13 vertices. In particular, this implies that the ray l_1, described by Bayer (1987), is fully contained in the convex hull of all flag vectors of 4-polytopes. Especially interesting examples on 9, 10 and 11 vertices are presented.
In this paper we investigate the problem of finding the maximum volume polytopes, inscribed in the unit sphere of the $d$-dimensional Euclidean space, with a given number of vertices. We solve this problem for polytopes with $d+2$ vertices in every dimension, and for polytopes with $d+3$ vertices in odd dimensions. For polytopes with $d+3$ vertices in even dimensions we give a partial solution.
For any marked poset we define a continuous family of polytopes, parametrized by a hypercube, generalizing the notions of marked order and marked chain polytopes. By providing transfer maps, we show that the vertices of the hypercube parametrize an Ehrhart equivalent family of lattice polytopes. The combinatorial type of the polytopes is constant when the parameters vary in the relative interior of each face of the hypercube. Moreover, with the help of a subdivision arising from a tropical hyperplane arrangement associated to the marked poset, we give an explicit description of the vertices of…
We describe an algorithm to enumerate polytopes. This algorithm is then implemented to give a complete classification of combinatorial spheres of dimension 3 with 9 vertices and decide polytopality of those spheres. In particular, we completely enumerate all combinatorial types of 4-dimensional polytopes with 9 vertices. It is shown that all of those combinatorial types are rational: They can be realized with rational coordinates. We find 316014 combinatorial spheres on 9 vertices. Of those, 274148 can be realized as the boundary complex of a four-dimensional polytope and the remaining 41866 a…
We consider 1-skeletons of the symmetric and asymmetric traveling salesperson polytopes whose vertices are all possible Hamiltonian tours in the complete directed or undirected graph, and the edges are geometric edges or one-dimensional faces of the polytope. It is known that the question whether two vertices of the symmetric or asymmetric traveling salesperson polytopes are nonadjacent is NP-complete. A sufficient condition for nonadjacency can be formulated as a combinatorial problem: if from the edges of two Hamiltonian tours we can construct two complementary Hamiltonian tours, then the co…
Let X be a complex, Gorenstein, Q-factorial, toric Fano variety. We prove two conjectures on the maximal Picard number of X in terms of its dimension and its pseudo-index, and characterize the boundary cases. Equivalently, we determine the maximal number of vertices of a simplicial reflexive polytope.
We give a complete enumeration of all 2-neighborly $d$-polytopes with $d+9$ and less facets. All of them are realized as 0/1-polytopes, except a 6-polytope $P_{6,10,15}$ with 10 vertices and 15 facets, and pyramids over $P_{6,10,15}$. In particular, we update the lower bounds for the number of facets of a 2-neighborly $d$-polytope $P$ and showed that the number of facets of $P$ is not less than the number of its vertices $f_0(P)$ for $f_0(P) \le d + 10$.
Schubitopes were introduced by Monical, Tokcan and Yong as a specific family of generalized permutohedra. It was proven by Fink, Mészáros and St.$\,$Dizier that Schubitopes are the Newton polytopes of the dual characters of flagged Weyl modules. Important cases of Schubitopes include the Newton polytopes of Schubert polynomials and key polynomials. In this paper, we develop a combinatorial rule to generate the vertices of Schubitopes. As an application, we show that the vertices of the Newton polytope of a key polynomial can be generated by permutations in a lower interval in the Bruhat order,…
Let $Q_n$ denote the $n$-dimensional hypercube with the vertex set $V_n=\{0,1}^n$. A 0/1-polytope of $Q_n$ is a convex hull of a subset of $V_n$. This paper is concerned with the enumeration of equivalence classes of full-dimensional 0/1-polytopes under the symmetries of the hypercube. With the aid of a computer program, Aichholzer completed the enumeration of equivalence classes of full-dimensional 0/1-polytopes for $Q_4$, $Q_5$, and those of $Q_6$ up to 12 vertices. In this paper, we present a method to compute the number of equivalence classes of full-dimensional 0/1-polytopes of $Q_n$ with…
We study the extension complexity of polytopes with few vertices or facets. On the one hand, we provide a complete classification of $d$-polytopes with at most $d+4$ vertices according to their extension complexity: Out of the super-exponentially many $d$-polytopes with $d+4$ vertices, all have extension complexity $d+4$ except for some families of size $θ(d^2)$. On the other hand, we show that generic realizations of simplicial/simple $d$-polytopes with $d+1+α$ vertices/facets have extension complexity at least $2 \sqrt{d(d+α)} -d + 1$, which shows that for all $d>(\frac{α-1}{2})^2$ there are…
We consider the {\em Shaped Partition Problem} of partitioning $n$ given vectors in real $k$-space into $p$ parts so as to maximize an arbitrary objective function which is convex on the sum of vectors in each part, subject to arbitrary constraints on the number of elements in each part. In addressing this problem, we study the {\em Shaped Partition Polytope} defined as the convex hull of solutions. The Shaped Partition Problem captures ${\cal N}{\cal P}$-hard problems such as the Max-Cut problem and the Traveling Salesperson problem, and the Shaped Partition Polytope may have exponentially ma…
The classification of toric Fano manifolds with large Picard number corresponds to the classification of smooth Fano polytopes with large number of vertices. A smooth Fano polytope is a polytope that contains the origin in its interior such that the vertex set of each facet forms a lattice basis. Casagrande showed that any smooth $d$-dimensional Fano polytope has at most $3d$ vertices. Smooth Fano polytopes in dimension $d$ with at least $3d-2$ vertices are completely known. The main result of this paper deals with the case of $3d-k$ vertices for $k$ fixed and $d$ large. It implies that there …
Several recent papers have addressed the problem of characterizing the $f$-vectors of cubical polytopes. This is largely motivated by the complete characterization of the $f$-vectors of simplicial polytopes given by Stanley, Billera, and Lee in 1980. Along these lines Blind and Blind have shown that unlike in the simplicial case, there are parity restrictions on the $f$-vectors of cubical polytopes. In particular, except for polygons, all even dimensional cubical polytopes must have an even number of vertices. Here this result is extended to a class of zonotopal complexes which includes simply…
Our main theoretical result is that, if a simple polytope has a pair of complementary vertices (i.e., two vertices with no facets in common), then it has at least two such pairs, which can be chosen to be disjoint. Using this result, we improve adjacency testing for vertices in both simple and non-simple polytopes: given a polytope in the standard form {x \in R^n | Ax = b and x \geq 0} and a list of its V vertices, we describe an O(n) test to identify whether any two given vertices are adjacent. For simple polytopes this test is perfect; for non-simple polytopes it may be indeterminate, and in…
Following the seminal work of Padberg on the Boolean quadric polytope $BQP$ and its LP relaxation $BQP_{LP}$, we consider a natural extension: $SATP$ and $SATP_{LP}$ polytopes, with $BQP_{LP}$ being projection of the $SATP_{LP}$ face (and $BQP$ -- projection of the $SATP$ face). We consider a problem of integer recognition: determine whether a maximum of a linear objective function is achieved at an integral vertex of a polytope. Various special instances of 3-SAT problem like NAE-3-SAT, 1-in-3-SAT, weighted MAX-3-SAT, and others can be solved by integer recognition over $SATP_{LP}$. We descri…
The aim of this paper is the determination of the largest $n$-dimensional polytope with $n+3$ vertices of unit diameter. This is a special case of a more general problem proposed by Graham.
We investigate a family of polytopes introduced by E.M.\ Feichtner, A.\ Postnikov and B.\ Sturmfels, which were named nestohedra. The vertices of these polytopes may intuitively be understood as constructions of hypergraphs. Limit cases in this family of polytopes are, on the one end, simplices, and, on the other end, permutohedra. In between, as notable members one finds associahedra and cyclohedra. The polytopes in this family are investigated here both as abstract polytopes and as realized in Euclidean spaces of all finite dimensions. The later realizations are inspired by J.D.\ Stasheff's …
We investigate the complexity of counting the number of integer points in tropical polytopes, and the complexity of calculating their volume. We study the tropical analogue of the outer parallel body and establish bounds for its volume. We deduce that there is no approximation algorithm of factor $α=2^{\text{poly}(m,n)}$ for the volume of a tropical polytope given by $n$ vertices in a space of dimension $m$, unless P$=$NP. Neither is there such an approximation algorithm for counting the number of integer points in tropical polytopes described by vertices. If follows that approximating these v…
