Determinantal point processes on a measure space X whose kernels represent trace class Hermitian operators on L^2(X) are associated to "quasifree" density operators on the Fock space over L^2(X).
Let $G$ be a finite tree. For any matching $M$ of $G$, let $U(M)$ be the set of vertices uncovered by $M$. Let $\mathcal{M}_G$ be a uniform random maximum size matching of $G$. In this paper, we analyze the structure of $U(\mathcal{M}_G)$. We first show that $U(\mathcal{M}_G)$ is a determinantal process. We also show that for most vertices of $G$, the process $U(\mathcal{M}_G)$ in a small neighborhood of that vertex can be well approximated based on a somewhat larger neighborhood of the same vertex. Then we show that the normalized Shannon entropy of $U(\mathcal{M}_G)$ can be also well approxi…
We attempt to construct the exact univariate probability distributions for 2 x 2 quantum systems that yield the (balanced) univariate Hilbert-Schmidt determinantal moments <(|rho| |rho^{PT}|)^n>, obtained by Slater and Dunkl (J. Phys. A, 45, 095305 [2012]). To begin, we follow--to the extent possible--the Mellin transform-based approach of Penson and Zyczkowski in their study of Fuss-Catalan and Raney distributions (Phys. Rev. E, 83, 061118 [2011]). Further, we approximate the y-intercepts (separability/entanglement boundaries)--at which |rho^{PT}|=0-- of the associated probability distributio…
We describe the fundamental constructions and properties of determinantal probability measures and point processes, giving streamlined proofs. We illustrate these with some important examples. We pose several general questions and conjectures.
Determinantal point processes have arisen in diverse settings in recent years and have been investigated intensively. We study basic combinatorial and probabilistic aspects in the discrete case. Our main results concern relationships with matroids, stochastic domination, negative association, completeness for infinite matroids, tail triviality, and a method for extension of results from orthogonal projections to positive contractions. We also present several new avenues for further investigation, involving Hilbert spaces, combinatorics, homology, and group representations, among other areas.
The paper contains an exposition of recent as well as old enough results on determinantal random point fields. We start with some general theorems including the proofs of the necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of the determinantal random point field with Hermitian kernel and a criterion for the weak convergence of its distribution. In the second section we proceed with the examples of the determinantal random point fields from Quantum Mechanics, Statistical Mechanics, Random Matrix Theory, Probability Theory, Representation Theory and Ergodic Theory. In connection with the Th…
The singular values of a product of $M$ independent Ginibre matrices of size $N\times N$ form a determinantal point process. Near the soft edge, as both $M$ and $N$ go to infinity in such a way that $M/N\to α$, $α>0$, a scaling limit emerges. We consider a gap probability for the corresponding limiting determinantal process, namely, the probability that there are no particles in the interval $(a,+\infty)$. We derive a Tracy-Widom-like formula in terms of the unique solution of a certain matrix Riemann-Hilbert problem of size $2 \times 2$. The right-tail asymptotics for this solution is obtaine…

We propose a new class of algorithms for randomly scheduling network transmissions. The idea is to use (discrete) determinantal point processes (subsets) to randomly assign medium access to various {\em repulsive} subsets of potential transmitters. This approach can be seen as a natural extension of (spatial) Aloha, which schedules transmissions independently. Under a general path loss model and Rayleigh fading, we show that, similarly to Aloha, they are also subject to elegant analysis of the coverage probabilities and transmission attempts (also known as local delay). This is mainly due to t…
The unitary group with the Haar probability measure is called Circular Unitary Ensemble. All the eigenvalues lie on the unit circle in the complex plane and they can be regarded as a determinantal point process on $\mathbb{S}^1$. It is also known that the scaled point processes converge weakly to the determinantal point process associated with the so-called sine kernel as the size of matrices tends to $\infty$. We extend this result to the case of high-dimensional spheres and show that the scaling limit processes are determinantal point processes associated with the kernels expressed by the Be…
In this note we consider sampling from (non-homogeneous) strongly Rayleigh probability measures. As an important corollary, we obtain a fast mixing Markov Chain sampler for Determinantal Point Processes.
In certain point processes, the configuration of points outside a bounded domain determines, with probability 1, certain statistical features of the points within the domain. This notion, called rigidity, was introduced in a work of Ghosh and Peres. In this paper, rigidity and the related notion of tolerance are examined systematically and point processes with rigidity of various degrees are introduced. Natural classes of point processes such as determinantal point processes, zero sets of Gaussian entire functions and perturbed lattices are examined from the point of view of rigidity, and gene…
We deduce a structurally inductive description of the determinantal probability measure associated with Kalai's celebrated enumeration result for higher--dimensional spanning trees of the $n-1$--simplex. As a consequence, we derive the marginal distributions of the simplex links in such random trees. Along the way, we also characterize the higher--dimensional spanning trees of every other simplicial cone in terms of the higher--dimensional rooted forests of the underlying simplicial complex. We also apply these new results to random topology, the spectral analysis of random graphs, and the the…
We introduce seven families of stochastic systems of interacting particles in one-dimension corresponding to the seven families of irreducible reduced affine root systems. We prove that they are determinantal in the sense that all spatio-temporal correlation functions are given by determinants controlled by a single function called the spatio-temporal correlation kernel. For the four families ${A}_{N-1}$, ${B}_N$, ${C}_N$ and ${D}_N$, we identify the systems of stochastic differential equations solved by these determinantal processes, which will be regarded as the elliptic extensions of the Dy…
Using the determinantal formula of Biane, Bougerol, and O'Connell, we give multitime joint probability densities to the noncolliding Brownian motion with drift, where the number of particles is finite. We study a special case such that the initial positions of particles are equidistant with a period $a$ and the values of drift coefficients are well-ordered with a scale $σ$. We show that, at each time $t >0$, the single-time probability density of particle system is exactly transformed to the biorthogonal Stieltjes-Wigert matrix model in the Chern-Simons theory introduced by Dolivet and Tierz. …
A connection between representation of compact groups and some invariant ensembles of Hermitian matrices is described. We focus on two types of invariant ensembles which extend the Gaussian and the Laguerre Unitary ensembles. We study them using projections and convolutions of invariant probability measures on adjoint orbits of a compact Lie group. These measures are described by semiclassical approximation involving tensor and restriction mulltiplicities. We show that a large class of them are determinantal.

Strongly Rayleigh distributions are natural generalizations of product and determinantal probability distributions and satisfy strongest form of negative dependence properties. We show that the "natural" Monte Carlo Markov Chain (MCMC) is rapidly mixing in the support of a {\em homogeneous} strongly Rayleigh distribution. As a byproduct, our proof implies Markov chains can be used to efficiently generate approximate samples of a $k$-determinantal point process. This answers an open question raised by Deshpande and Rademacher.
To any positive contraction $Q$ on $\ell^2(W)$, there is associated a determinantal probability measure ${\mathbf P}^Q$ on $2^W$, where $W$ is a denumerable set. Let $Γ$ be a countable sofic finitely generated group and $G = (Γ, \mathsf{E})$ be a Cayley graph of $Γ$. We show that if $Q_1$ and $Q_2$ are two $Γ$-equivariant positive contractions on $\ell^2(Γ)$ or on $\ell^2(\mathsf{E})$ with $Q_1 \le Q_2$, then there exists a $Γ$-invariant monotone coupling of the corresponding determinantal probability measures witnessing the stochastic domination ${\bf P}^{Q_1} \preccurlyeq {\bf P}^{Q_2}$. In …
These are lecture notes for a mini-course given at the St. Petersburg School in Probability and Statistical Physics in June 2012. Topics include integrable models of random growth, determinantal point processes, Schur processes and Markov dynamics on them, Macdonald processes and their application to asymptotics of directed polymers in random media.
We prove a local central limit theorem (LCLT) for the number of points $N(J)$ in a region $J$ in $\mathbb R^d$ specified by a determinantal point process with an Hermitian kernel. The only assumption is that the variance of $N(J)$ tends to infinity as $|J| \to \infty$. This extends a previous result giving a weaker central limit theorem (CLT) for these systems. Our result relies on the fact that the Lee-Yang zeros of the generating function for $\{E(k;J)\}$ --- the probabilities of there being exactly $k$ points in $J$ --- all lie on the negative real $z$-axis. In particular, the result applie…
The second part of the paper mainly deals with convergence of infinite determinantal measures, understood as the convergence of the approximating finite determinantal measures. In addition to the usual weak topology on the space of probability measures on the space of configurations, we also consider the weak topology on the space of finite measures on the space of finite measures on the half-line, used via the natural immersion, well-defined almost surely with respect to the infinite Bessel point process, of the space of configurations into the space of finite measures on the half-line. The m…
The (BC type) z-measures are a family of four parameter $z, z', a, b$ probability measures on the path space of the nonnegative Gelfand-Tsetlin graph with Jacobi-edge multiplicities. We can interpret the $z$-measures as random point processes $\mathcal{P}_{z, z', a, b}$ on the punctured positive real line $\mathfrak{X} = \mathbb{R}_+\setminus\{1\}$. Our main result is that these random processes are determinantal and moreover we compute their correlation kernels explicitly in terms of hypergeometric functions. For very special values of the parameters $z, z'$, the processes $\mathcal{P}_{z, z'…
A system of one-dimensional Brownian motions (BMs) conditioned never to collide with each other is realized as (i) Dyson's BM model, which is a process of eigenvalues of hermitian matrix-valued diffusion process in the Gaussian unitary ensemble (GUE), and as (ii) the $h$-transform of absorbing BM in a Weyl chamber, where the harmonic function $h$ is the product of differences of variables (the Vandermonde determinant). The Karlin-McGregor formula gives determinantal expression to the transition probability density of absorbing BM. We show from the Karlin-McGregor formula, if the initial state …
When the number of particles is finite, the noncolliding Brownian motion (the Dyson model) and the noncolliding squared Bessel process are determinantal diffusion processes for any deterministic initial configuration $ξ=\sum_{j \in Λ} δ_{x_j}$, in the sense that any multitime correlation function is given by a determinant associated with the correlation kernel, which is specified by an entire function $Φ$ having zeros in $\supp ξ$. Using such entire functions $Φ$, we define new topologies called the $Φ$-moderate topologies. Then we construct three infinite-dimensional determinantal processes, …
Compelling evidence-though yet no formal proof--has been adduced that the probability that a generic two-qubit state ($ρ$) is separable is $\frac{8}{33}$ (arXiv:1301.6617, arXiv:1109.2560, arXiv:0704.3723). Proceeding in related analytical frameworks, using a further determinantal moment formula of C. Dunkl (Appendix), we reach the conclusion that one-half of this probability arises when the determinantal inequality $|ρ^{PT}|>|ρ|$, where $PT$ denotes the partial transpose, is satisfied, and, the other half, when $|ρ|>|ρ^{PT}|$. These probabilities are taken with respect to the flat, Hilbert-Sc…
The Gamma kernel is a projection kernel of the form (A(x)B(y)-B(x)A(y))/(x-y), where A and B are certain functions on the one-dimensional lattice expressed through Euler's Gamma function. The Gamma kernel depends on two continuous parameters; its principal minors serve as the correlation functions of a determinantal probability measure P defined on the space of infinite point configurations on the lattice. As was shown earlier (Borodin and Olshanski, Advances in Math. 194 (2005), 141-202; arXiv:math-ph/0305043), P describes the asymptotics of certain ensembles of random partitions in a limit r…
The Probability Hypothesis Density (PHD) filter, which is used for multi-target tracking based on sensor measurements, relies on the propagation of the first-order moment, or intensity function, of a point process. This algorithm assumes that targets behave independently, an hypothesis which may not hold in practice due to potential target interactions. In this paper, we construct a second-order PHD filter based on Determinantal Point Processes (DPPs) which are able to model repulsion between targets. Such processes are characterized by their first and second-order moments, which allows the al…
Let X be a locally compact Polish space and let m be a reference Radon measure on X. Let $Γ_X$ denote the configuration space over X, that is, the space of all locally finite subsets of X. A point process on X is a probability measure on $Γ_X$. A point process $μ$ is called determinantal if its correlation functions have the form $k^{(n)}(x_1,\ldots,x_n)=\det[K(x_i,x_j)]_{i,j=1,\ldots,n}$. The function K(x,y) is called the correlation kernel of the determinantal point process $μ$. Assume that the space X is split into two parts: $X=X_1\sqcup X_2$. A kernel K(x,y) is called J-Hermitian if it is…
We study the hole probabilities for ${\mathcal X}_{\infty}^{(α)}$ ($α>0$), a determinantal point process in the complex plane with the kernel $\mathbb K_{\infty}^{(α)}(z,w)=\fracα{2π}E_{\frac{2}α,\frac{2}α}(z\bar w)e^{-\frac{|z|^α}{2}-\frac{|w|^α}{2}}$ with respect to Lebesgue measure on the complex plane, where $E_{a,b}(z)$ denotes the Mittag-Leffler function. Let $U$ be an open subset of $D(0,(\frac{2}α)^{\frac{1}α})$ and ${\mathcal X}_{\infty}^{(α)}(rU)$ denote the number of points of ${\mathcal X}_{\infty}^{(α)}$ that fall in $rU$. Then, under some conditions on $U$, we show that $$ \lim_{…
Goldman [7] proved that the distribution of a stationary determinantal point process (DPP) $Φ$ can be coupled with its reduced Palm version $Φ^{0,!}$ such that there exists a point process $η$ where $Φ= Φ^{0,!} \cup η$ in distribution and $Φ^{0,!} \cap η= \emptyset$. The points of $η$ characterize the repulsive nature of a typical point of $Φ$. In this paper, the first moment measure of $η$ is used to study the repulsive behavior of DPPs in high dimensions. It is shown that many families of DPPs have the property that the total number of points in $η$ converges in probability to zero as the sp…
We investigate the solution to the logistic equation involving non-local operators in time. In the linear case such operators lead to the well-known theory of time changes. We provide the probabilistic representation for the non-linear logistic equation with non-local operators in time. The so-called fractional logistic equation has been investigated by many researchers, the problem to find the explicit representation of the solution on the whole real line is still open. In our recent work the solution on compact sets has been written in terms of Euler's numbers.
We introduce the class of {\em strongly Rayleigh} probability measures by means of geometric properties of their generating polynomials that amount to the stability of the latter. This class covers important models such as determinantal measures (e.g. product measures, uniform random spanning tree measures) and distributions for symmetric exclusion processes. We show that strongly Rayleigh measures enjoy all virtues of negative dependence and we also prove a series of conjectures due to Liggett, Pemantle, and Wagner, respectively. Moreover, we extend Lyons' recent results on determinantal meas…
In this paper, we consider the deformed Fredholm determinant of the confluent hypergeometric kernel. This determinant represents the gap probability of the corresponding determinantal point process where each particle is removed independently with probability $1- γ$, $0 \leq γ<1$. We derive asymptotics of the deformed Fredholm determinant when the gap interval tends to infinity, up to and including the constant term. As an application of our results, we establish a central limit theorem for the eigenvalue counting function and a global rigidity upper bound for its maximum deviation.
We introduce new families of determinantal point processes (DPPs) on a complex plane ${\mathbb{C}}$, which are classified into seven types following the irreducible reduced affine root systems, $R_N=A_{N-1}$, $B_N$, $B^{\vee}_N$, $C_N$, $C^{\vee}_N$, $BC_N$, $D_N$, $N \in {\mathbb{N}}$. Their multivariate probability densities are doubly periodic with periods $(L, iW)$, $0 < L, W < \infty$, $i=\sqrt{-1}$. The construction is based on the orthogonality relations with respect to the double integrals over the fundamental domain, $[0, L) \times i [0, W)$, which are proved in this paper for the $R_…
Stochastic monotonicity is a well known partial order relation between probability measures defined on the same partially ordered set. Strassen Theorem establishes equivalence between stochastic monotonicity and the existence of a coupling compatible with respect to the partial order. We consider the case of a countable set and introduce the class of \emph{finitely decomposable flows} on a directed acyclic graph associated to the partial order. We show that a probability measure stochastically dominates another probability measure if and only if there exists a finitely decomposable flow having…
The Bures metric is a natural choice in measuring the distance of density operators representing states in quantum mechanics. In the past few years a random matrix ensemble and the corresponding joint probability density function of its eigenvalues was identified. Moreover a relation with the Cauchy two-matrix model was discovered but never thoroughly investigated, leaving open in particular the following question: How are the kernels of the Pfaffian point process of the Bures random matrix ensemble related to the ones of the determinantal point process of the Cauchy two-matrix model and moreo…
In the series of lectures, we will discuss probability laws of random points, curves, and surfaces. Starting from a brief review of the notion of martingales, one-dimensional Brownian motion (BM), and the $D$-dimensional Bessel processes, BES$_{D}$, $D \geq 1$, first we study Dyson's Brownian motion model with parameter $β>0$, DYS$_β$, which is regarded as multivariate extensions of BES$_D$ with the relation $β=D-1$. Next, using the reproducing kernels of Hilbert function spaces, the Gaussian analytic functions (GAFs) are defined on a unit disk and an annulus. As zeros of the GAFs, determinant…
We introduce and study a 2-parameter family of unitarily invariant probability measures on the space of infinite Hermitian matrices. We show that the decomposition of a measure from this family on ergodic components is described by a determinantal point process on the real line. The correlation kernel for this process is explicitly computed. At certain values of parameters the kernel turns into the well-known sine kernel which describes the local correlation in Circular and Gaussian Unitary Ensembles. Thus, the random point configuration of the sine process is interpreted as the random set of …
The analogy between determinantal point processes (DPPs) and free fermionic calculi is well-known. We point out that, from the perspective of free fermionic algebras, Pfaffian point processes (PfPPs) naturally emerge, and show that a positive contraction acting on a "doubled" one-particle space with an additional structure defines a unique PfPP. Recently, Olshanski inverted the direction from free fermions to DPPs, proposed a scheme to construct a fermionic state from a quasi-invariant probability measure, and introduced the notion of perfectness of a probability measure. We propose a method t…
In this paper, the moment problem for symmetric probability measures is characterized in terms of associated sequences called Jacobi sequences $\{ω_n\}$. A notion named property (SC), which is proved to be a necessary and sufficient condition for the indeterminacy of the moment problem, naturally arises from the viewpoint of finite dimensional approximation for infinite matrices. We prove that the moment problem for q-Gaussian not only for $q>1$ but also for $q<-1$ is indeterminate. We also prove that hyperbolic secant distribution is "the last probability measure" which is uniquely determined…
In this note we initiate the probabilistic study of the critical points of polynomials of large degree with a given distribution of roots. Namely, let f be a polynomial of degree n whose zeros are chosen IID from a probability measure mu on the complex numbers. We conjecture that the zero set of f' always converges in distribution to mu as n goes to infinity. We prove this for measures with finite one-dimensional energy. When mu is uniform on the unit circle this condition fails. In this special case the zero set of f' converges in distribution to that the IID Gaussian random power series, a w…
We present a categorical viewpoint of probability measures by showing that a probability measure can be viewed as a weakly averaging affine measurable functional taking values in the unit interval which preserves limits. The probability measures on a space are the elements of a submonad of a double dualization monad on the category of measurable spaces into the unit interval, and this monad is naturally isomorphic to the Giry monad. We show this submonad is the codensity monad of a functor from the category of convex spaces to the category of measurable spaces. A theorem proving the integral o…
The spatial structure of transmitters in wireless networks plays a key role in evaluating the mutual interference and hence the performance. Although the Poisson point process (PPP) has been widely used to model the spatial configuration of wireless networks, it is not suitable for networks with repulsion. The Ginibre point process (GPP) is one of the main examples of determinantal point processes that can be used to model random phenomena where repulsion is observed. Considering the accuracy, tractability and practicability tradeoffs, we introduce and promote the $β$-GPP, an intermediate clas…
