Navier-Stokes equations are investigated in a functional setting in 3D open sets, bounded or not, without assuming any regularity of the boundary. The main idea is to find a correct definition of the Stokes operator in a suitable Hilbert space of divergence-free vectors and apply the Fujita-Kato method, a fixed point procedure, to get a local strong solution.
In this paper, we shall prove the global existence of weak solutions to 3D inhomogeneous incompressible Navier-Stokes system $({\rm INS})$ with initial density in the bounded function space and having a positive lower bound and with initial velocity being sufficiently small in the critical Besov space, $\dot B^{\f12}_{2,1}.$ This result corresponds to the Fujita-Kato solutions of the classical Navier-Stokes system. The same idea can be used to prove the global existence of weak solutions in the \emph{critical functional framework} to $({\rm INS})$ with one component of the initial velocity bei…
In this paper, we derive suitable optimal $L^p-L^q$ decay estimates, $1\leq p\leq 2\leq q\leq \infty$, for the solutions to the $σ$-evolution equation, $σ>1$, with scale-invariant time-dependent damping and power nonlinearity~$|u|^p$, \[ u_{tt}+(-Δ)^σu + \fracμ{1+t} u_t= |u|^{p}, \] where $μ>0$, $p>1$. The critical exponent $p=p_c$ for the global (in time) existence of small data solutions to the Cauchy problem is related to the long time behavior of solutions, which changes accordingly $μ\in (0, 1)$ or $μ>1$. Under the assumption of small initial data in $L^1\cap L^2$, we find the critical ex…
We are concerned with the so-called Boussinesq equations with partial viscosity. These equations consist of the ordinary incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with a forcing term which is transported {\it with no dissipation} by the velocity field. Such equations are simplified models for geophysics (in which case the forcing term is proportional either to the temperature, or to the salinity or to the density). In the present paper, we show that the standard theorems for incompressible Navier-Stokes equations may be extended to Boussinesq system despite the fact that there is no dissipation o…
In this paper, we investigate the Cauchy problem associated to a system of PDE's of Oldroyd type. The considered model describes the evolution of certain viscoelastic fluids within a corotational framework. The non-corotational setting is also addressed in dimension two. We show that some widespread results concerning the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations can be extended to the considered systems. In particular we show the existence and uniqueness of global-in-time classical solutions for large data in dimension two. This result is supported by suitable condition on the initial data to pr…

We investigate Kato's method for parabolic equations with a quadratic non-linearity in an abstract form. We extract several properties known from linear systems theory which turn out to be the essential ingredients for the method. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for these conditions and provide new and more general proofs, based on real interpolation. In application to the Navier-Stokes equations, our approach unifies several results known in the literature, partly with different proofs. Moreover, we establish new existence and uniqueness results for rough initial data on arbitrary…
We are concerned with the 3D incompressible Hall-magnetohydro-dynamic system (Hall-MHD). Our first aim is to provide the reader with an elementary proof of a global well-posedness result for small data with critical Sobolev regularity, in the spirit of Fujita-Kato's theorem [10] for the Navier-Stokes equations. Next, we investigate the long-time asymptotics of global solutions of the Hall-MHD system that are in the Fujita-Kato regularity class. A weak-strong uniqueness statement is also proven. Finally, we consider the so-called 2 1/2 D flows for the Hall-MHD system, and prove the global exist…
There are a few examples of solutions to the incompressible Euler equations which are piecewise smooth with a discontinuity of the tangential velocity across a hypersurface evolving in time: the so-called vortex sheets. An important open problem is to determine whether or not these solutions can be obtained as zero viscosity limits of the incompressible Navier-Stokes solutions in the energy space. In this paper we establish a couple of sufficient conditions similar to the one obtained by Kato in [T.~Kato. Remarks on zero viscosity limit for nonstationary Navier-Stokes flows with boundary. Semi…
We prove a blow-up criterion in terms of the upper bound of the density for the strong solution to the 3-D compressible Navier-Stokes equations. The initial vacuum is allowed. The main ingredient of the proof is \textit{a priori} estimate for an important quantity under the assumption that the density is upper bounded, whose divergence can be viewed as the effective viscous flux.
We study the asymtotic behavior of solutions to the two-dimensional stochasitc Navier-Stokes (SNS) equation in the small viscosity limit. The SNS equation is supplemented with no-slip boundary condition, in which a strong boundary layer shall appear in the limit due to the mismatch of the boundary conditions of the SNS equation and the corresponding limit problem. Several equivalent dissipation conditions are derived to ensure the convergence hold in the energy space. One novelty of this work is that we do not assume any smallness for the noise.
We shall prove dispersive and smoothing estimates for Bochner type laplacians on some non-compact Riemannian manifolds with negative Ricci curvature, in particular on hyperbolic spaces. These estimates will be used to prove Fujita-Kato type theorems for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. We shall also discuss the uniqueness of Leray weak solutions in the two dimensional case.
The issue of the inviscid limit for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations when a no-slip condition is prescribed on the boundary is a famous open problem. A result by Tosio Kato says that convergence to the Euler equations holds true in the energy space if and only if the energy dissipation rate of the viscous flow in a boundary layer of width proportional to the viscosity vanishes. Of course, if one considers the motion of a solid body in an incompressible fluid, with a no-slip condition at the interface, the issue of the inviscid limit is as least as difficult. However it is not clear i…
In this paper, we obtain a blow-up result for solutions to a semi-linear wave equation with scale-invariant dissipation and mass and power non-linearity, in the case in which the model has a "wave like" behavior. In order to achieve this goal, we perform a change of variables that transforms our starting equation in a strictly hyperbolic semi-linear wave equation with time-dependent speed of propagation. Then, we apply Kato's lemma to find a blow-up result for solutions to the transformed equation under some support and sign assumptions on the initial data. A special emphasis is placed on the …
We study the large time behavior of Fujita-Kato type solutions to the Vlasov-Navier-Stokes system set on $\mathbb{T}^3 \times \mathbb{R}^3$. Under the assumption that the initial so-called modulated energy is small enough, we prove that the distribution function converges to a Dirac mass in velocity, with exponential rate. The proof is based on the fine structure of the system and on a bootstrap analysis allowing to get global bounds on moments.
We continue an analysis, started in [10], of some issues related to the incompressible Euler or Navier-Stokes (NS) equations on a d-dimensional torus T^d. More specifically, we consider the quadratic term in these equations; this arises from the bilinear map (v, w) -> v . D w, where v, w : T^d -> R^d are two velocity fields. We derive upper and lower bounds for the constants in some inequalities related to the above bilinear map; these bounds hold, in particular, for the sharp constants G_{n d} = G_n in the Kato inequality | < v . D w | w >_n | <= G_n || v ||_n || w ||^2_n, where n in (d/2 + 1…
Given an initial data $v_0$ with vorticity $\Om_0=\na\times v_0$ in $L^{\frac 3 2},$ (which implies that $v_0$ belongs to the Sobolev space $H^{\frac12}$), we prove that the solution $v$ given by the classical Fujita-Kato theorem blows up in a finite time $T^\star$ only if, for any $p$ in $ ]4,6[$ and any unit vector $e$ in $\R^3,$ there holds $ \int_0^{T^\star}\|v(t)\cdot e\|_{\dH^{\f12+\f2p}}^p\,dt=\infty.$ We remark that all these quantities are scaling invariant under the scaling transformation of Navier-Stokes system.
Existence of local-in-time unique solution and loss of smoothness of full Magnet-Hydro-Dynamics system (MHD) is considered for periodic initial data. The result is proven using Fujita-Kato's method in $\ell^1$ based (for the Fourier coefficients) functional spaces enabling us to easily estimate nonlinear terms in the system as well as solutions to Maxwells's equations. A loss of smoothness result is shown for the velocity and magnetic field. It comes from the damped-wave operator which does not have any smoothing effect.
We study mild solutions to the Navier-Stokes equation on the $n$-dimensional hyperbolic space $\mathbb{H}^n$, $n \geq 2$. We use dispersive and smoothing estimates proved by Pierfelice on a class of complete Riemannian manifolds to extend the Fujita-Kato theory of mild solutions from $\mathbb{R}^n$ to $\mathbb{H}^n$. This includes well-posedness results for $L^n$ initial data and $L^n \cap L^p$ initial data for $1 < p < n$, global in time results for small initial data, and time decay results for the $L^n$ and $L^p$ norms of both $u$ and $\nabla u$. Due to the additional exponential time decay…
We consider the convergence in the $L^2$ norm, uniformly in time, of the Navier-Stokes equations with Dirichlet boundary conditions to the Euler equations with slip boundary conditions. We prove that if the Oleinik conditions of no back-flow in the trace of the Euler flow, and of a lower bound for the Navier-Stokes vorticity is assumed in a Kato-like boundary layer, then the inviscid limit holds.
Given initial data $u_0=(u_0^\h,u_0^3)\in H^{-\d,0}\cap H^{\f12}(\R^3)$ with both~$\uh_0$ and~$\nabla_{\rm h}\uh_0$ belonging to ~$L^2(\R^3)\cap L^\infty(\R_\v;L^2(\R^2_\h))$ and $u_0^\h\in L^\infty(\R_\v, H^{-\d}(\R^2_\h))$ for some $δ\in ]0,1[,$ if in addition $\pa_3u_0$ belongs to $H^{-\frac12,0}\cap H^{\frac12,0}(\R^3),$ we prove that the classical $3$-D Navier-Stokes system has a unique global Fujita-Kato solution provided that $\|\pa_3u_0\|_{H^{-\f12,0}}$ is sufficiently small compared to a constant which depends only on the norms of the initial data. In particular, this result provides …
We study the global regularity, for all time and all initial data in $H^{1/2}$, of a recently introduced decimated version of the incompressible 3D Navier-Stokes (dNS) equations. The model is based on a projection of the dynamical evolution of Navier-Stokes (NS) equations into the subspace where helicity (the $L^2-$scalar product of velocity and vorticity) is sign-definite. The presence of a second (beside energy) sign-definite inviscid conserved quadratic quantity, which is equivalent to the $H^{1/2}-$Sobolev norm, allows us to demonstrate global existence and uniqueness, of space-periodic so…
A blowup criteria along maximum point of the 3D-Navier-Stokes flow in terms of function spaces with variable growth condition is constructed. This criterion is different from the Beale-Kato-Majda type and Constantin-Fefferman type criterion. If geometric behavior of the velocity vector field near the maximum point has a kind of symmetry up to a possible blowup time, then the solution can be extended to be the strong solution beyond the possible blowup time.
We here aim at proving the global existence and uniqueness of solutions to the inhomogeneous incompressible Navier-Stokes system in the case where the initial density is discontinuous and the initial velocity has critical regularity. Assuming that the initial density is close to a positive constant, we obtain global existence and uniqueness in the two-dimensional case whenever the initial velocity belongs to some critical homogeneous Besov space (and in small in the three-dimensional case). Next, still in a critical functional framework, we establish a uniqueness statement that is valid in the…
We consider in a smooth and bounded two dimensional domain the convergence in the $L^2$ norm, uniformly in time, of the solution of the stochastic Navier-Stokes equations with additive noise and no-slip boundary conditions to the solution of the corresponding Euler equations. We prove, under general regularity on the initial conditions of the Euler equations, that assuming the dissipation of the energy of the solution of the Navier-Stokes equations in a Kato type boundary layer, then the inviscid limit holds.
We produce a new proof of Tao's result on the slightly supercritical Navier Stokes equations. Our proof has the advantage that it works in the plane while Tao's proof works only in dimensions three and higher. We accomplish this by studying the problem as a system of differential inequalities on the $L^2$ norms of the Littlewood Paley decomposition, along the lines of Pavlovic's proof of the Beale-Kato-Majda theorem.
We obtain logarithmic improvements for conditions for regularity of the Navier-Stokes equation, similar to those of Prodi-Serrin or Beale-Kato-Majda. Some of the proofs make use of a stochastic approach involving Feynman-Kac like inequalities. As part of the our methods, we give a different approach to a priori estimates of Foias, Guillope and Temam.
The primitive equations in a 3D infinite layer domain are considered with linearly growing initial data in the horizontal direction, which illustrates the global atmospheric rotating or straining flows. On the boundaries, Dirichlet, Neumann or mixed boundary conditions are imposed. The Ornstein-Uhlenbeck type operator appears in the linear parts, so the semigroup theory is established by Trotter's arguments due to decomposition of infinitesimal generators. To obtain smoothing properties of the semigroup, derivatives of the associated kernel are calculated. For proving time-local existence and …
It is shown--within a mathematical framework based on the suitably defined scale of sparseness of the super-level sets of the positive and negative parts of the vorticity components, and in the context of a blow-up-type argument--that the ever-resisting `scaling gap', i.e., the scaling distance between a regularity criterion and a corresponding a priori bound (shortly, a measure of the super-criticality of the 3D Navier-Stokes regularity problem), can be reduced by an algebraic factor; since (independent) fundamental works of Ladyzhenskaya, Prodi and Serrin as well as Kato and Fujita in 1960s,…
The aim of this work is to prove an existence and uniqueness result of Kato-Fujita type for the Navier-Stokes equations, in vorticity form, in $2-D$ and $3-D$, perturbed by a gradient type multiplicative Gaussian noise (for sufficiently small initial vorticity). These equations are considered in order to model hydrodynamic turbulence. The approach was motivated by a recent result by V. Barbu and the second named author in \cite{b1}, that treats the stochastic $3D$-Navier-Stokes equations, in vorticity form, perturbed by linear multiplicative Gaussian noise. More precisely, the equation is tran…
In this paper, we obtain a blow up criterion for strong solutions to the 3-D compressible Naveri-Stokes equations just in terms of the gradient of the velocity, similar to the Beal-Kato-Majda criterion for the ideal incompressible flow. The key ingredients in our analysis are the a priori super-norm estimate of the momentum by a Moser-iteration and an estimate of the space-time square mean of the gradient of the density. In addition, initial vacuum is allowed in our case.
We first prove decay estimates and spacetime integral bounds for Stokes flows in amalgam spaces $E^r_q$ which connect the classical Lebesgue spaces to the spaces of uniformly locally $r$-integrable functions. Using these estimates, we construct mild solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations in the amalgam spaces satisfying the corresponding spacetime integral bounds. Time-global solutions are constructed for small data in $E^3_q$, $1\le q \le 3$. Our results provide new bounds for the strong solutions classically constructed by Kato and the more recent solutions in uniformly local spaces constr…
In this work, we introduce and study the well-posedness of the multidimensional fractional stochastic Navier-Stokes equations on bounded domains and on the torus (Briefly dD-FSNSE). We prove the existence of a martingale solution for the general regime. We establish the uniqueness in the case a martingale solution enjoys a condition of Serrin's type on the fractional Sobolev spaces. If an $L^2-$ local weak (strong in probability) solution exists and enjoys conditions of Beale-Kato-Majda type, this solution is global and unique. These conditions are automatically satisfied for the 2D-FSNSE on t…
We show that any solution of the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equation whose vorticity distribution is uniformly bounded in $L^1(R^2)$ for positive times is entirely determined by the trace of the vorticity at $t = 0$, which is a finite measure. When combined with previous existence results by Cottet, by Giga, Miyakawa, and Osada, and by Kato, this uniqueness property implies that the Cauchy problem for the vorticity equation in $R^2$ is globally well-posed in the space of finite measures. In particular, this provides an example of a situation where the Navier-Stokes equation is well-posed fo…
Consider the Navier-Stokes flow past a rotating obstacle with a general time-dependent angular velocity and a time-dependent outflow condition at infinity. After rewriting the problem on a fixed domain, one obtains a non-autonomous system of equations with unbounded drift terms. It is shown that the solution to a model problem in the whole space case $\R^d$ is governed by a strongly continuous evolution system on $L^p_σ(\R^d)$ for $1<p<\infty$. The strategy is to derive a representation formula, similar to the one known in the case of non-autonomous Ornstein-Uhlenbeck equations. This explicit …
Whether, in the presence of a boundary, solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations converge to a solution to the Euler equations in the vanishing viscosity limit is unknown. In a seminal 1983 paper, Tosio Kato showed that the vanishing viscosity limit is equivalent to having sufficient control of the gradient of the Navier-Stokes velocity in a boundary layer of width proportional to the viscosity. In a 2008 paper, the present author showed that the vanishing viscosity limit is equivalent to the formation of a vortex sheet on the boundary. We present here several observations that follow on from …
We consider the Euler system of gas dynamics endowed with the incomplete equation of state relating the internal energy to the mass density and the pressure. We show that any sufficiently smooth solution can be recovered as a vanishing viscosity - heat conductivity limit of the Navier--Stokes--Fourier system with a properly defined temperature. The result is unconditional in the case of the Navier type (slip) boundary conditions and extends to the no-slip condition for the velocity under some extra hypotheses of Kato's type concerning the behavior of the fluid in the boundary layer.
Due to the seminal works of Hochbruck and Ostermann exponential splittings are well established numerical methods utilizing operator semigroup theory for the treatment of semilinear evolution equations whose principal linear part involves a sectorial operator with angle greater than $π/2$ (meaning essentially the holomorphy of the underlying semigroup). The present paper contributes to this subject by relaxing on the sectoriality condition, but in turn requiring that the semigroup operators act consistently on an interpolation couple (or on a scale of Banach spaces). Our conditions (on the sem…
We treat the heat equation with singular drift terms and its generalization: the linearized Navier-Stokes system. In the first case, we obtain boundedness of weak solutions for highly singular, "supercritical" data. In the second case, we obtain regularity result for weak solutions with mildly singular data ( those in the Kato class). This not only extends some of the classical regularity theory in [AS], [CrZ] and others from the case of elliptic and heat equations to that of linearized Navier-Stokes equations but also proves an unexpected gradient estimate, which extends the recent interestin…
Motivated by Kolmogorov's theory of turbulence we present a unified approach to the regularity problems for the 3D Navier-Stokes and Euler equations. We introduce a dissipation wavenumber $Λ(t)$ that separates low modes where the Euler dynamics is predominant from the high modes where the viscous forces take over. Then using an indifferent to the viscosity technique we obtain a new regularity criterion which is weaker than every Ladyzhenskaya-Prodi-Serrin condition in the viscous case, and reduces to the Beale-Kato-Majda criterion in the inviscid case. In the viscous case we also we prove that…
