An amorphic association scheme has the property that any of its fusion is also an association scheme. In this paper we generalize the property to be amorphic to an arbitrary C-algebra and prove that any amorphic C-algebra is determined up to isomorphism by the multiset of its degrees and an additional integer equal 1 or -1. Moreover, we show that any amorphic C-algebra with rational structure constants is the fusion of an amorphic homogeneous C-algebra. Finally, as a special case of our results we obtain the well-known Ivanov's characterization of intersection numbers of amorphic association schemes.
We construct twelve infinite families of pseudocyclic and non-amorphic association schemes, in which each nontrivial relation is a strongly regular graph. Three of the twelve families generalize the counterexamples to A. V. Ivanov's conjecture by Ikuta and Munemasa [15].
Applying results from partial difference sets, quadratic forms, and recent results of Brouwer and Van Dam, we construct the first known amorphic association scheme with negative Latin square type graphs and whose underlying set is a non-elementary abelian 2-group. We give a simple proof of a result of Hamilton that generalizes Brouwer's result. We use multiple distinct quadratic forms to construct amorphic association schemes with a large number of classes.
We define modular Terwilliger algebras of association schemes, Terwilliger algebras over a positive characteristic field, and consider basic properties. We give a condition for the modular Terwilliger algebra to be non-semisimple. We show that the dimension of a Terwilliger algebra of a Johnson scheme depends on the characteristic of the coefficient field. We also give some other examples.
We give a full description of the algebraic structures of the Bose-Mesner algebra and Terwilliger algebra of the wreath product of one-class association schemes.
We show that taking the set of primitive idempotents of commutative association schemes is a functor from the category of commutative association schemes with surjective morphisms to the category of finite sets with surjective partial functions. We then consider projective systems of commutative association schemes consisting of surjections (which we call profinite association schemes), for which Bose-Mesner algebra is defined, and describe a Delsarte theory on such schemes. This is another method for generalizing association schemes to those on infinite sets, related with the approach by Barg…
In this paper we classify complex Hadamard matrices contained in the Bose-Mesner algebra of nonsymmetric 3-class association schemes. As a consequence of our classification, we have two infinite families and some small examples of complex Hadamard matrices contained in the Bose-Mesner algebra of a self-dual fission of a complete multipartite graph.
We consider nonsymmetric hermitian complex Hadamard matrices belonging to the Bose-Mesner algebra of commutative nonsymmetric association schemes. First, we give a characterization of the eigenmatrix of a commutative nonsymmetric association scheme of class 3 whose Bose-Mesner algebra contains a nonsymmetric hermitian complex Hadamard matrix, and show that such a complex Hadamard matrix is necessarily a Butson-type complex Hadamard matrix whose entries are 4-th roots of unity. We also give nonsymmetric association schemes X of class 6 on Galois rings of characteristic 4, and classify hermitian…
Motivated by the similarities between the theory of spherical $t$-designs and that of $t$-designs in $Q$-polynomial association schemes, we study two versions of relative $t$-designs, the counterparts of Euclidean $t$-designs for $P$- and/or $Q$-polynomial association schemes. We develop the theory based on the Terwilliger algebra, which is a noncommutative associative semisimple $\mathbb{C}$-algebra associated with each vertex of an association scheme. We compute explicitly the Fisher type lower bounds on the sizes of relative $t$-designs, assuming that certain irreducible modules behave nice…
Association schemes were originally introduced by Bose and his co-workers in the design of statistical experiments. Since that point of inception, the concept has proved useful in the study of group actions, in algebraic graph theory, in algebraic coding theory, and in areas as far afield as knot theory and numerical integration. This branch of the theory, viewed in this collection of surveys as the "commutative case," has seen significant activity in the last few decades. The goal of the present survey is to discuss the most important new developments in several directions, including Gelfand …
Association schemes on triples (ASTs) are ternary analogues of classical association schemes, whose relations and adjacency algebras are ternary instead of binary. We provide a survey of the current progress in the study of ASTs, highlighting open questions, suggesting research directions, and producing some related results. We review properties of the ternary adjacency algebras of ASTs, ASTs whose relations are invariant under some group action, and ASTs obtained from 2-designs and two-graphs. We also provide a notion of fusion and fission ASTs, using the AST obtained from the affine special …
We construct a pair of non-commutative rank 8 association schemes from a rank 3 non-symmetric association scheme. For the pair, two association schemes have the same character table but different Frobenius-Schur indicators. This situation is similar to the pair of the dihedral group and the quaternion group of order 8. We also determine the structures of adjacency algebras of them over the rational number field.
In [3], Hanaki defined the Terwilliger algebras of association schemes over a commutative unital ring. In this paper, we call the Terwilliger algebras of association schemes over a field $\mathbb{F}$ the Terwilliger $\mathbb{F}$-algebras of association schemes and study the Terwilliger $\mathbb{F}$-algebras of quasi-thin association schemes. As main results, we determine the $\mathbb{F}$-dimensions, the semisimplicity, the Jacobson radicals, and the algebraic structures of the Terwilliger $\mathbb{F}$-algebras of quasi-thin association schemes. We also get some results with independent interes…
Let $p$ denote a prime number. In this note, we focus on the modular Terwilliger algebras of association schemes defined in [3]. We define the primary module of a modular Terwilliger algebra of an association scheme and determine all its composition factors up to isomorphism. We then characterize the $p'$-valenced association schemes by some properties of their modular Terwilliger algebras. The corollaries about the modular Terwilliger algebras of association schemes are given.
Association schemes are combinatorial objects that allow us solve problems in several branches of mathematics. They have been used in the study of permutation groups and graphs and also in the design of experiments, coding theory, partition designs etc. In this paper we show some techniques for computing properties of association schemes. The main framework arises from the fact that we can characterize completely the Bose-Mesner algebra in terms of a zero-dimensional ideal. A Gröbner basis of this ideal can be easily derived without the use of Buchberger algorithm in an efficient way. From thi…
In [H. Suzuki, Association schemes with multiple $Q$-polynomial structures, J. Algebraic Combin. 7 (1998) 181-196], Suzuki gave a classification of association schemes with multiple $Q$-polynomial structures, allowing for one exceptional case which has five classes. In this paper, we rule out the existence of this case. Hence Suzuki's theorem mirrors exactly the well-known counterpart for association schemes with multiple $P$-polynomial structures, a result due to Eiichi Bannai and Etsuko Bannai in 1980.
We give a complete description of the irreducible representations of algebraic fusions of association schemes, in terms of the irreducible representations of a Schur cover of the corresponding group of algebraic automorphisms.
We study the relation between algebraic structures and Graph Theory. We have defined five different weighted digraphs associated to a finite dimensional algebra over a field in order to tackle important properties of the associated algebras, mainly the nilpotency and solvability in the case of Leibniz algebras.
One may think of a $d$-class association scheme as a $(d+1)$-dimensional matrix algebra over $\mathbb{R}$ closed under Schur products. In this context, an imprimitive scheme is one which admits a subalgebra of block matrices, also closed under the Schur product. Such systems of imprimitivity provide us with quotient schemes, smaller association schemes which are often easier to understand, providing useful information about the structure of the larger scheme. For any association scheme we find a basis of $d+1$ idempotent matrices for the algebra. A cometric scheme is one whose idempotent basis…
We revisit the Bose-Mesner algebra of the perfect matching association scheme. Our main results are: 1. An inductive algorithm, based on solving linear equations, to compute the eigenvalues of the orbital basis elements given the central characters of the symmetric groups. 2. Universal formulas, as content evaluations of symmetric functions, for the eigenvalues of fixed orbitals. 3. An inductive construction of an eigenvector (the so called first Gelfand-Tsetlin vector) in each eigenspace leading to a different inductive algorithm (not using central characters) for the eigenvalues of the orbit…
Scaffolds are certain tensors arising in the study of association schemes, and have been (implicitly) understood diagrammatically as digraphs with distinguished "root" nodes and with matrix edge weights, often taken from Bose-Mesner algebras. In this paper, we first present a slight modification of Martin's conjecture (2021) concerning a duality of scaffolds whose digraphs are embedded in a closed disk in the plane with root nodes all lying on the boundary circle, and then show that this modified conjecture holds true if we restrict ourselves to the class of translation association schemes, i.…
Let $p$ be an odd prime. In this paper we provide a construction which gives four non-Schurian association schemes for every $p\geq 5$ and two for $p=3$. This construction is explained using incidences between points and lines of a biaffine plane and we also provide a pure algebraic model for it with the aid of finite Heisenberg groups. The obtained results are discussed in a more wide framework.
In this paper we will first present a generalization of the wedge product of association schemes to table algebras and give a necessary and sufficient condition for a table algebra to be the wedge product of two table algebras. Then we show that if the duals of two commutative table algebras are table algebras, then the dual of their wedge product is a table algebra, and is also isomorphic to the wedge product of the duals of those table algebras in the reverse order. Some applications to association schemes are also given.
In this paper, we study the subconstituent algebras, also called as Terwilliger algebras, of association schemes that are obtained as the wreath product of one-class association schemes $K_n=H(1, n)$ for $n\ge 2$. We find that the $d$-class association scheme $K_{n_{1}}\wr K_{n_{2}} \wr ... \wr K_{n_{d}}$ formed by taking the wreath product of $K_{n_{i}}$ has the triple-regularity property. We determine the dimension of the Terwilliger algebra for the association scheme $K_{n_{1}}\wr K_{n_{2}}\wr ... \wr K_ {n_{d}}$. We give a description of the structure of the Terwilliger algebra for the wre…
An association scheme is called skew-symmetric if it has no symmetric adjacency relations other than the diagonal one. In this paper, we study 4-class skew-symmetric association schemes. In J. Ma [On the nonexistence of skew-symmetric amorphous association schemes, submitted for publication], we discovered that their character tables fall into three types. We now determine their intersection matrices. We then determine the character tables and intersection numbers for 4-class skew-symmetric pseudocyclic association schemes, the only known examples of which are cyclotomic schemes. As a result, …
An association scheme is amorphous if it has as many fusion schemes as possible. Symmetric amorphous schemes were classified by A. V. Ivanov [A. V. Ivanov, Amorphous cellular rings II, in Investigations in algebraic theory of combinatorial objects, pages 39--49. VNIISI, Moscow, Institute for System Studies, 1985] and commutative amorphous schemes were classified by T. Ito, A. Munemasa and M. Yamada [T. Ito, A. Munemasa and M. Yamada, Amorphous association schemes over the Galois rings of characteristic 4, European J. Combin., 12(1991), 513--526]. A scheme is called skew-symmetric if the diagon…
Let A be an association scheme on q\geq 3 vertices. We show that the Bose-Mesner algebra of the generalized Hamming scheme H(n,A), for n\geq 2, is not the Nomura algebra of a type II matrix. This result gives examples of formally self-dual Bose-Mesner algebras that are not the Nomura algebras of type II matrices.
We can define the adjacency algebra of an association scheme over arbitrary field. It is not always semisimple over a field of positive characteristic. The structures of adjacency algebras over a field of positive characteristic have not been sufficiently studied. In this paper, we consider the structures of adjacency algebras of dual polar schemes over a field of positive characteristic and determine them when their algebras are local algebras.
We prove an Assmus-Mattson-type theorem for block codes where the alphabet is the vertex set of a commutative association scheme (say, with $s$ classes). This in particular generalizes the Assmus-Mattson-type theorems for $\mathbb{Z}_4$-linear codes due to Tanabe (2003) and Shin, Kumar, and Helleseth (2004), as well as the original theorem by Assmus and Mattson (1969). The weights of a code are $s$-tuples of non-negative integers in this case, and the conditions in our theorem for obtaining $t$-designs from the code involve concepts from polynomial interpolation in $s$ variables. The Terwillig…
In this paper, for any prime $p$, we propose the notion of a $p$-transitive association scheme. This notion aims to generalize the fact that the regular module of a group algebra of a finite group has a unique trivial submodule to the case of the regular modules of modular adjacency algebras. We completely determine the $p$-transitive quasi-thin association schemes and the $p$-transitive association schemes with thin thin residue by their structure theory properties.
We construct a wide subcategory of the category of finite association schemes with a collection of desirable properties. Our subcategory has a first isomorphism theorem analogous to that of groups. Also, standard constructions taking schemes to groups (thin radicals and thin quotients) or algebras (adjacency algebras) become functorial when restricted to our category. We use our category to give a more conceptual account for a result of Hanaki concerning products of characters of association schemes; i.e. we show that the virtual representations of an association scheme form a module over the …
Via duality of Hopf algebras, there is a direct association between peak quasisymmetric functions and enumeration of chains in Eulerian posets. We study this association explicitly, showing that the notion of $\cd$-index, long studied in the context of convex polytopes and Eulerian posets, arises as the dual basis to a natural basis of peak quasisymmetric functions introduced by Stembridge. Thus Eulerian posets having a nonnegative $\cd$-index (for example, face lattices of convex polytopes) correspond to peak quasisymmetric functions having a nonnegative representation in terms of this basis.…
Let $Γ$ denote an undirected, connected, regular graph with vertex set $X$, adjacency matrix $A$, and ${d+1}$ distinct eigenvalues. Let ${\mathcal A}={\mathcal A}(Γ)$ denote the subalgebra of Mat$_X({\mathbb C})$ generated by $A$. We refer to ${\mathcal A}$ as the {\it adjacency algebra} of $Γ$. In this paper we investigate algebraic and combinatorial structure of $Γ$ for which the adjacency algebra ${\mathcal A}$ is closed under Hadamard multiplication. In particular, under this simple assumption, we show the following: (i) ${\mathcal A}$ has a standard basis $\{I,F_1,\ldots,F_d\}$; (ii) for …
Let $Y$ denote a $D$-class symmetric association scheme with $D \geq 3$, and suppose $Y$ is almost-bipartite P- and Q-polynomial. Let $x$ denote a vertex of $Y$ and let $T=T(x)$ denote the corresponding Terwilliger algebra. We prove that any irreducible $T$-module $W$ is both thin and dual thin in the sense of Terwilliger. We produce two bases for $W$ and describe the action of $T$ on these bases. We prove that the isomorphism class of $W$ as a $T$-module is determined by two parameters, the dual endpoint and diameter of $W$. We find a recurrence which gives the multiplicities with which the i…
The well-known absolute bound condition for a primitive symmetric association scheme (X,S) gives an upper bound for |X| in terms of |S| and the minimal non-principal multiplicity of the scheme. In this paper we prove another upper bounds for |X| for an arbitrary primitive scheme (X,S). They do not depend on |S| but depend on some invariants of its adjacency algebra KS where K is an algebraic number field or a finite field.
We propose the notion of association schemoids generalizing that of association schemes from small categorical points of view. In particular, a generalization of the Bose-Mesner algebra of an association scheme appears as a subalgebra in the category algebra of the underlying category of a schemoid. In this paper, the equivalence between the categories of grouopids and that of thin association schemoids is established. Moreover linear extensions of schemoids are considered. A general theory of the Baues-Wirsching cohomology deduces a classification theorem for such extensions of a schemoid. We…
