Let $Y$ denote a $D$-class symmetric association scheme with $D \geq 3$, and suppose $Y$ is almost-bipartite P- and Q-polynomial. Let $x$ denote a vertex of $Y$ and let $T=T(x)$ denote the corresponding Terwilliger algebra. We prove that any irreducible $T$-module $W$ is both thin and dual thin in the sense of Terwilliger. We produce two bases for $W$ and describe the action of $T$ on these bases. We prove that the isomorphism class of $W$ as a $T$-module is determined by two parameters, the dual endpoint and diameter of $W$. We find a recurrence which gives the multiplicities with which the irreducible $T$-modules occur in the standard module. We compute this multiplicity for those irreducible $T$-modules which have diameter at least $D-3$.
In [3], Hanaki defined the Terwilliger algebras of association schemes over a commutative unital ring. In this paper, we call the Terwilliger algebras of association schemes over a field $\mathbb{F}$ the Terwilliger $\mathbb{F}$-algebras of association schemes and study the Terwilliger $\mathbb{F}$-algebras of quasi-thin association schemes. As main results, we determine the $\mathbb{F}$-dimensions, the semisimplicity, the Jacobson radicals, and the algebraic structures of the Terwilliger $\mathbb{F}$-algebras of quasi-thin association schemes. We also get some results with independent interes…
Let $p$ denote a prime number. In this note, we focus on the modular Terwilliger algebras of association schemes defined in [3]. We define the primary module of a modular Terwilliger algebra of an association scheme and determine all its composition factors up to isomorphism. We then characterize the $p'$-valenced association schemes by some properties of their modular Terwilliger algebras. The corollaries about the modular Terwilliger algebras of association schemes are given.
We define modular Terwilliger algebras of association schemes, Terwilliger algebras over a positive characteristic field, and consider basic properties. We give a condition for the modular Terwilliger algebra to be non-semisimple. We show that the dimension of a Terwilliger algebra of a Johnson scheme depends on the characteristic of the coefficient field. We also give some other examples.
In this paper, we study the subconstituent algebras, also called as Terwilliger algebras, of association schemes that are obtained as the wreath product of one-class association schemes $K_n=H(1, n)$ for $n\ge 2$. We find that the $d$-class association scheme $K_{n_{1}}\wr K_{n_{2}} \wr ... \wr K_{n_{d}}$ formed by taking the wreath product of $K_{n_{i}}$ has the triple-regularity property. We determine the dimension of the Terwilliger algebra for the association scheme $K_{n_{1}}\wr K_{n_{2}}\wr ... \wr K_ {n_{d}}$. We give a description of the structure of the Terwilliger algebra for the wre…
We give a full description of the algebraic structures of the Bose-Mesner algebra and Terwilliger algebra of the wreath product of one-class association schemes.
Let $2.O_{m+1}$ denote the doubled Odd graph with vertex set $X$ on a set of cardinality $2m+1$, where $m\geq 1$. Fix a vertex $x_0\in X$. Let $\mathcal{A}:=\mathcal{A}(x_0)$ denote the centralizer algebra of the stabilizer of $x_0$ in the automorphism group of $2.O_{m+1}$, and $T:=T(x_0)$ the Terwilliger algebra of $2.O_{m+1}$. In this paper, we first give a basis of $\mathcal{A}$ by considering the action of the stabilizer of $x_0$ on $X\times X$ and determine the dimension of $\mathcal{A}$. Furthermore, we give three subalgebras of $\mathcal{A}$ such that their direct sum is $\mathcal{A}$ a…
Association schemes were originally introduced by Bose and his co-workers in the design of statistical experiments. Since that point of inception, the concept has proved useful in the study of group actions, in algebraic graph theory, in algebraic coding theory, and in areas as far afield as knot theory and numerical integration. This branch of the theory, viewed in this collection of surveys as the "commutative case," has seen significant activity in the last few decades. The goal of the present survey is to discuss the most important new developments in several directions, including Gelfand …
Let Y denote a symmetric association scheme which is Q-polynomial with respect to an ordering E_0,...,E_D of the primitive idempotents. Bannai and Ito conjectured that the associated sequence of multiplicities m_0,...,m_D is unimodal. We prove that if Y is dual-thin in the sense of Terwilliger, then the sequence of multiplicities satisfies m_i <= m_{i+1} and m_i <= m_{D-i} for i < D/2.
We prove an Assmus-Mattson-type theorem for block codes where the alphabet is the vertex set of a commutative association scheme (say, with $s$ classes). This in particular generalizes the Assmus-Mattson-type theorems for $\mathbb{Z}_4$-linear codes due to Tanabe (2003) and Shin, Kumar, and Helleseth (2004), as well as the original theorem by Assmus and Mattson (1969). The weights of a code are $s$-tuples of non-negative integers in this case, and the conditions in our theorem for obtaining $t$-designs from the code involve concepts from polynomial interpolation in $s$ variables. The Terwillig…
Motivated by the similarities between the theory of spherical $t$-designs and that of $t$-designs in $Q$-polynomial association schemes, we study two versions of relative $t$-designs, the counterparts of Euclidean $t$-designs for $P$- and/or $Q$-polynomial association schemes. We develop the theory based on the Terwilliger algebra, which is a noncommutative associative semisimple $\mathbb{C}$-algebra associated with each vertex of an association scheme. We compute explicitly the Fisher type lower bounds on the sizes of relative $t$-designs, assuming that certain irreducible modules behave nice…
Let $Γ$ denote a bipartite distance-regular graph with diameter $D \ge 4$ and valency $k \ge 3$. Let $X$ denote the vertex set of $Γ$, and let $A$ denote the adjacency matrix of $Γ$. For $x \in X$ let $T=T(x)$ denote the subalgebra of Mat$_X(\mathbb{C}$ generated by $A, E*_0, E*s_1, \ldots, E*_D$, where for $0 \le i \le D$, $E*_i$ represents the projection onto the $i$th subconstituent of $Γ$ with respect to $x$. We refer to $T$ as the {\em Terwilliger algebra} of $Γ$ with respect to $x$. An irreducible $T$-module $W$ is said to be {\em thin} whenever dim $E*_i W \le 1$ for $0 \le i \le D$. By…
We present the tables of feasible parameters of primitive $3$-class $Q$-polynomial association schemes and $4$- and $5$-class $Q$-bipartite association schemes (on up to $2800$, $10000$, and $50000$ vertices, respectively), accompanied by a number of nonexistence results for such schemes obtained by analysing triple intersection numbers of putative open cases.
It was shown by LeCompte, Martin, and Oweans in 2010 that the existence of mutually unbiased Hadamard matrices and the identity matrix, which coincide with mutually unbiased bases, is equivalent to that of a $Q$-polynomial association scheme of class four which is both $Q$-antipodal and $Q$-bipartite. We prove that the existence of a set of mutually unbiased Bush-type Hadamard matrices is equivalent to that of an association scheme of class five. As an application of this equivalence, we obtain the upper bound of the number of mutually unbiased Bush-type Hadamard matrices of order $4n^2$ to be…
We consider continuous-time quantum walks on distance-regular graphs of small diameter. Using results about the existence of complex Hadamard matrices in association schemes, we determine which of these graphs have quantum walks that admit uniform mixing. First we apply a result due to Chan to show that the only strongly regular graphs that admit instantaneous uniform mixing are the Paley graph of order nine and certain graphs corresponding to regular symmetric Hadamard matrices with constant diagonal. Next we prove that if uniform mixing occurs on a bipartite graph X with n vertices, then n i…
Suzuki (1998) showed that an imprimitive Q-polynomial association scheme with first multiplicity at least three is either Q-bipartite, Q-antipodal, or with four or six classes. The exceptional case with four classes has recently been ruled out by Cerzo and Suzuki (2009). In this paper, we show the nonexistence of the last case with six classes. Hence Suzuki's theorem now exactly mirrors its well-known counterpart for imprimitive distance-regular graphs.
We first summarize the basic structure of the outer distribution module of a completely regular code. Then, employing a simple lemma concerning eigenvectors in association schemes, we propose to study the tightest case, where the indices of the eigenspace that appear in the outer distribution module are equally spaced. In addition to the arithmetic codes of the companion paper, this highly structured class includes other beautiful examples and we propose the classification of $Q$-polynomial completely regular codes in the Hamming graphs. A key result is Theorem 3.10 which finds that the $Q$-po…
An association scheme is called partially metric if it has a connected relation whose distance-two relation is also a relation of the scheme. In this paper we determine the symmetric partially metric association schemes with a multiplicity three. Besides the association schemes related to regular complete $4$-partite graphs, we obtain the association schemes related to the Platonic solids, the bipartite double scheme of the dodecahedron, and three association schemes that are related to well-known $2$-arc-transitive covers of the cube: the Möbius-Kantor graph, the Nauru graph, and the Foster g…
This paper is about three classes of objects: Leonard triples, distance-regular graphs and the modules for the anticommutator spin algebra. Let $\K$ denote an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. Let $V$ denote a vector space over $\K$ with finite positive dimension. A Leonard triple on $V$ is an ordered triple of linear transformations in $\mathrm{End}(V)$ such that for each of these transformations there exists a basis for $V$ with respect to which the matrix representing that transformation is diagonal and the matrices representing the other two transformations are irreducible…
It is proved that association schemes with bipartite basis graphs are exactly 2-schemes. This result follows from a characterization of p-schemes for an arbitrary prime p in terms of basis digraphs.
