Considering a simple symmetric random walk in dimension $d\geq 3$, we study the almost sure joint asymptotic behavior of two objects: first the local times of a pair of neighboring points, then the local time of a point and the occupation time of the surface of the unit ball around it.
For a skip-free Markov process on non-negative integers with generator matrix Q, we evaluate the joint Laplace transform of the occupation times before hitting the state n (starting at 0). This Laplace transform has a very straightforward and familiar expression. We investigate the properties of this Laplace transform, especially the conditions under which the occupation times form a Markov chain.
We derive the probability density function of the positive occupation time of one-dimensional Brownian motion with two-valued drift. Long time asymptotics of the density are also computed. We use the result to describe the transitional probability density function of a general N-dimensional system of stochastic differential equations representing stochastically perturbed sliding motion of a discontinuous, piecewise-smooth vector field on short time frames. A description of the density at larger times is obtained via an asymptotic expansion of the Fokker-Planck equation.
The need to model a Markov renewal on-off process with multiple off-states arise in many applications such as economics, physics, and engineering. Characterization of the occupation time of one specific off-state marginally or two off-states jointly is crucial to understanding such processes. We derive the exact marginal and joint distributions of the off-state occupation times. The theoretical results are confirmed numerically in a simulation study. A special case when all holding times have Levy distribution is considered for the possibility of simplification of the formulas.
For a spectrally negative Lévy process $X$, we study the following distribution: $$ \mathbb{E}_x \left[ \mathrm{e}^{- q \int_0^t \mathbf{1}_{(a,b)} (X_s) \mathrm{d}s } ; X_t \in \mathrm{d}y \right], $$ where $-\infty \leq a < b < \infty$, and where $q,t>0$ and $x \in \mathbb{R}$. More precisely, we identify the Laplace transform with respect to $t$ of this measure in terms of the scale functions of the underlying process. Our results are then used to price step options and the particular case of an exponential spectrally negative Lévy jump-diffusion model is discussed.
Let $S_n$ be a lattice random walk with mean zero and finite variance, and let $Λ^a_n$ be its occupation measure at level $a$. In this note, we prove local limit theorems for $\Pr[S_n=x,Λ^a_n=\ell]$ and $\Pr[S_n=x|Λ^a_n=\ell]$ in the cases where $a$, $|x-a|$ and $\ell$ are either zero or at least of order $\sqrt n$. The asymptotic description of these quantities matches the corresponding probabilities for Brownian motion and its local time process. This note can be seen as a generalization of previous results by Kaigh (1975) and Uchiyama (2011). In similar fashion to these results, our method …
For an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process driven by a double exponential jump diffusion process, we obtain formulas for the joint Laplace transform of it and its occupation times. The approach used is remarkable and can be extended to investigate the occupation times of an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process driven by a more general Levy process.
In this paper, we derive the joint Laplace transforms of occupation times until its last passage times as well as its positions. Motivated by Baurdoux [2], the last times before an independent exponential variable are studied. By applying dual arguments, explicit formulas are derived in terms of new analytical identities from Loeffen et al. [12].
We derive the asymptotic behavior of the occupation measure of the unit ball, for super-Brownian motion started from the Dirac measure at a distant point x and conditioned to hit the unit ball. In the critical dimension d=4, we obtain a limiting exponential distribution for the ratio of the occupation measure over log(|x|).
We establish a functional limit theorem for the joint-law of occupations near and away from indifferent fixed points of interval maps, and of waits for the occupations away from these points, in the sense of strong distributional convergence. It is a functional and joint-distributional extension of Darling--Kac type limit theorem, of Lamperti type generalized arcsine laws for occupation times, and of Dynkin and Lamperti type generalized arcsine laws for waiting times, at the same time.
For an arbitrary Lévy process $X$ which is not a compound Poisson process, we are interested in its occupation times. We use a quite novel and useful approach to derive formulas for the Laplace transform of the joint distribution of $X$ and its occupation times. Our formulas are compact, and more importantly, the forms of the formulas clearly demonstrate the essential quantities for the calculation of occupation times of $X$. It is believed that our results are important not only for the study of stochastic processes, but also for financial applications.
We prove joint Holder continuity and an occupation-time formula for the self-intersection local time of fractional Brownian motion. Motivated by an occupation-time formula, we also introduce a new version of the derivative of self-intersection local time for fractional Brownian motion and prove Holder conditions for this process. This process is related to a different version of the derivative of self-intersection local time studied by the authors in a previous work.
We consider a discrete-time two-dimensional process $\{(X_{1,n},X_{2,n})\}$ on $\mathbb{Z}^2$ with a background process $\{J_n\}$ on a finite set $S_0$, where individual processes $\{X_{1,n}\}$ and $\{X_{2,n}\}$ are both skip free. We assume that the joint process $\{\boldsymbol{Y}_n\}=\{(X_{1,n},X_{2,n},J_n)\}$ is Markovian and that the transition probabilities of the two-dimensional process $\{(X_{1,n},X_{2,n})\}$ vary according to the state of the background process $\{J_n\}$. This modulation is assumed to be space homogeneous. We refer to this process as a two-dimensional skip-free Markov …
Smoothness and asymptotic behaviors are studied for the densities of the law of the occupation time on the positive line for Bessel bridges and the normalized excursion of strictly stable processes. The key role is played by these properties for functions defined by Riemann--Liouville fractional integrals.
We consider a discrete-time $d$-dimensional process $\{\boldsymbol{X}_n\}=\{(X_{1,n},X_{2,n},...,X_{d,n})\}$ on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ with a background process $\{J_n\}$ on a countable set $S_0$, where individual processes $\{X_{i,n}\},i\in\{1,2,...,d\},$ are skip free. We assume that the joint process $\{\boldsymbol{Y}_n\}=\{(\boldsymbol{X}_n,J_n)\}$ is Markovian and that the transition probabilities of the $d$-dimensional process $\{\boldsymbol{X}_n\}$ vary according to the state of the background process $\{J_n\}$. This modulation is assumed to be space homogeneous. We refer to this process as a $…
The L2-approximation of occupation and local times of a symmetric $α$-stable L{é}vy process from high frequency discrete time observations is studied. The standard Riemann sum estimators are shown to be asymptotically efficient when 0 < $α$ $\le$ 1, but only rate optimal for 1 < $α$ $\le$ 2. For this, the exact convergence of the L2-approximation error is proven with explicit constants.
In this short paper, in order to price occupation-time options, such as (double-barrier) step options and quantile options, we derive various joint distributions of a mixed-exponential jump-diffusion process and its occupation times of intervals.
We consider particle systems in locally compact Abelian groups with particles moving according to a process with symmetric stationary independent increments and undergoing one and two levels of critical branching. We obtain long time fluctuation limits for the occupation time process of the one-and two-level systems. We give complete results for the case of finite variance branching, where the fluctuation limits are Gaussian random fields, and partial results for an example of infinite variance branching, where the fluctuation limits are stable random fields. The asymptotics of the occupation …
This paper presents a set of results relating to the occupation time $α(t)$ of a process $X(\cdot)$. The first set of results concerns exact characterizations of $α(t)$ for $t\geq0$, e.g., in terms of its transform up to an exponentially distributed epoch. In addition we establish a central limit theorem (entailing that a centered and normalized version of $α(t)/t$ converges to a zero-mean Normal random variable as $t\rightarrow\infty$) and the tail asymptotics of $P(α(t)/t\geq q)$. We apply our findings to spectrally positive Lévy processes reflected at the infimum and establish various new o…
We study occupancy counts for the critical nearest-neighbor branching random walk on the $d$-dimensional lattice, conditioned on non-extinction. For $d\geq 3$, Lalley and Zheng (2011) showed that the properly scaled joint distribution of the number of sites occupied by $j$ generation-$n$ particles, $j=1,2,\ldots$, converges in distribution as $n$ goes to infinity, to a deterministic multiple of a single exponential random variable. The limiting exponential variable can be understood as the classical Yaglom limit of the total population size of generation $n$. Here we study the second order flu…
A class of Fleming-Viot processes with decaying sampling rates and $α$-stable motions that correspond to distributions with growing populations are introduced and analyzed. Almost sure long-time scaling limits for these processes are developed, addressing the question of long-time population distribution for growing populations. Asymptotics in higher orders are investigated. Convergence of particle location occupation and inhabitation time processes are also addressed and related by way of the historical process. The basic results and techniques allow general Feller motion/mutation and may app…
In this paper excursions of a stationary diffusion in stationary state are studied. In particular, we compute the joint distribution of the occupation times $I^{(+)}_t$ and $I^{(-)}_t$ above and below, respectively, the observed level at time $t$ during an excursion. We consider also the starting time $g_t$ and the ending time $d_t$ of the excursion (straddling $t$) and discuss their relations to the Levy measure of the inverse local time. It is seen that the pairs $(I^{(+)}_t, I^{(-)}_t)$ and $(t-g_t, d_t-t)$ are identically distributed. Moreover, conditionally on $I^{(+)}_t + I^{(-)}_t =v$, …
We consider finite-state time-nonhomogeneous Markov chains where the probability of moving from state $i$ to state $j\neq i$ at time $n$ is $G(i,j)/n^ζ$ for a ``generator'' matrix $G$ and strength parameter $ζ>0$. In these chains, as time grows, the positions are less and less likely to change, and so form simple models of age-dependent time-reinforcing behaviors. These chains, however, exhibit some different, perhaps unexpected, asymptotic occupation laws depending on parameters. Although on the one hand it is shown that the asymptotic position converges to a point-mixture for all $ζ>0$, on t…
We consider a nearest neighbor random walk on the one-dimensional integer lattice with drift towards the origin determined by an asymptotically vanishing function of the number of visits to zero. We show the existence of distinct regimes according to the rate of decay of the drift. In particular, when the rate is sufficiently slow, the position of the random walk, properly normalized, converges to a symmetric exponential law. In this regime, in contrast to the classical case, the range of the walk scales differently from its position.
We prove that the joint distribution of the occupation time ratios for ergodic transformations preserving an infinite measure converges to a multidimensional version of Lamperti's generalized arcsine distribution, in the sense of strong distributional convergence. Our results can be applied to interval maps and Markov chains. We adopt the double Laplace transform method, which has been utilized in the study of occupation times of diffusions on multiray. We also discuss the inverse problem.

The present work deals with the global solvability as well as asymptotic analysis of stochastic generalized Burgers-Huxley (SGBH) equation perturbed by space-time white noise in a bounded interval of $\mathbb{R}$. We first prove the existence of unique mild as well as strong solution to SGBH equation and then obtain the existence of an invariant measure. Later, we establish two major properties of the Markovian semigroup associated with the solutions of SGBH equation, that is, irreducibility and strong Feller property. These two properties guarantees the uniqueness of invariant measures and er…
We consider the connections among `clumped' residual allocation models (RAMs), a general class of stick-breaking processes including Dirichlet processes, and the occupation laws of certain discrete space time-inhomogeneous Markov chains related to simulated annealing and other applications. An intermediate structure is introduced in a given RAM, where proportions between successive indices in a list are added or clumped together to form another RAM. In particular, when the initial RAM is a Griffiths-Engen-McCloskey (GEM) sequence and the indices are given by the random times that an auxiliary …
With respect to a class of long-range exclusion processes on $\mathbb{Z}^d$, with single particle transition rates of order $|\cdot|^{-(d+α)}$, starting under Bernoulli invariant measure $ν_ρ$ with density $ρ$, we consider the fluctuation behavior of occupation times at a vertex and more general additive functionals. Part of our motivation is to investigate the dependence on $α$, $d$ and $ρ$ with respect to the variance of these functionals and associated scaling limits. In the case the rates are symmetric, among other results, we find the scaling limits exhaust a range of fractional Brownian …
We study the asymptotic behaviour of occupation times of a transient random walk in quenched random environment on a strip in a sub-diffusive regime. The asymptotic behaviour of hitting times, which is a more traditional object of study, is the exactly same. As a particular case, we solve a long standing problem of describing the asymptotic behaviour of a random walk with bounded jumps on a one-dimensional lattice
In this paper we study the asymptotic behavior of the normalized weighted empirical occupation measures of a diffusion process on a compact manifold which is killed at a smooth rate and then regenerated at a random location, distributed according to the weighted empirical occupation measure. We show that the weighted occupation measures almost surely comprise an asymptotic pseudo-trajectory for a certain deterministic measure-valued semiflow, after suitably rescaling the time, and that with probability one they converge to the quasi-stationary distribution of the killed diffusion. These result…
The approximation of integral type functionals is studied for discrete observations of a continuous Itô semimartingale. Based on novel approximations in the Fourier domain, central limit theorems are proved for $L^2$-Sobolev functions with fractional smoothness. An explicit $L^2$-lower bound shows that already lower order quadrature rules, such as the trapezoidal rule and the classical Riemann estimator, are rate optimal, but only the trapezoidal rule is efficient, achieving the minimal asymptotic variance.
Using a new approach, for spectrally negative Lévy processes we find joint Laplace transforms involving the last exit time (from a semi-infinite interval), the value of the process at the last exit time and the associated occupation time, which generalizes some previous results.
We derive a large deviation principle for the density profile of occupation times of random interlacements at a fixed level in a large box of Z^d, with d bigger or equal to 3. As an application, we analyze the asymptotic behavior of the probability that atypically high values of the density profile insulate a macroscopic body in a large box. As a step in this program, we obtain a similar large deviation principle for the occupation-time measure of Brownian interlacements at a fixed level in a large box of R^d, and we derive a new identity for the Laplace transform of the occupation-time measur…
Consider a critical nearest neighbor branching random walk on the $d$-dimensional integer lattice initiated by a single particle at the origin. Let $G_{n}$ be the event that the branching random walk survives to generation $n$. We obtain limit theorems conditional on the event $G_{n}$ for a variety of occupation statistics: (1) Let $V_{n}$ be the maximal number of particles at a single site at time $n$. If the offspring distribution has finite $α$th moment for some integer $α\geq 2$, then in dimensions 3 and higher, $V_n=O_p(n^{1/α})$; and if the offspring distribution has an exponentially dec…
This note is devoted to the study of the maximum of the excursion of a random walk with negative drift and light-tailed increments. More precisely, we determine the local asymptotics of the joint distribution of the length, maximum and the time at which this maximum is achieved. This result allows one to obtain a local central limit theorems for the length of the excursion conditioned on large values of the maximum.
We consider random sequential adsorption processes where the initially empty sites of a graph are irreversibly occupied, in random order, either by monomers which block neighboring sites, or by dimers. We also consider a process where initially occupied sites annihilate their neighbors at random times. We verify that these processes are well defined on infinite graphs, and derive forward equations governing joint vacancy/occupation probabilities. Using these, we derive exact formulae for occupation probabilities and pair correlations in Bethe lattices. For the blocking and annihilation process…
We study the problem of non-asymptotic deviations between a reference measure and its empirical version, in the 1-Wasserstein metric, under the standing assumption that the measure satisfies a transport-entropy inequality. We extend some results of F. Bolley, A. Guillin and C. Villani with simple proofs. Our methods are based on concentration inequalities and extend to the general setting of measures on a Polish space. Deviation bounds for the occupation measure of a Markov chain are also given, under the assumption that the chain is contractive on the space of Lipschitz functions. Throughout …
Assume that claims in a portfolio of insurance contracts are described by independent and identically distributed random variables with regularly varying tails and occur according to a near mixed Poisson process. We provide a collection of results pertaining to the joint asymptotic Laplace transforms of the normalized sums of the smallest and largest claims, when the length of the considered time interval tends to infinity. The results crucially depend on the value of the tail index of the claim distribution, as well as on the number of largest claims under consideration.
We are developing a new method for the analysis of queuing systems with heterogeneous in time and space compound (marked) Poisson input flow. The state space of the input flow is embedded in a higher-dimensional space with a homogeneous marked Poisson field on it. We prove limit theorems for partial sums of marks under the ordering of field points by coordinates.
Tied-down renewal processes are generalisations of the Brownian bridge, where an event (or a zero crossing) occurs both at the origin of time and at the final observation time $t$. We give an analytical derivation of the two-time correlation function for such processes in the Laplace space of all temporal variables. This yields the exact asymptotic expression of the correlation in the Porod regime of short separations between the two times and in the persistence regime of large separations. We also investigate other quantities, such as the backward and forward recurrence times, as well as the …
This paper studies the heavy-traffic asymptotics for the multiclass FIFO M${}^X$/G/1 queue. We first derive the probability generating function of the joint queue length distribution. Using the probability generating function, we then present heavy-traffic asymptotic formulas for the joint queue length distribution and its joint moments (i.e., the joint queue length moments). These formulas are proved under weaker conditions on the service time distributions, compared to the ones reported in the literature. This fact leads us to conjectures that some of the conditions made in the literature ar…
Tree shape statistics provide valuable quantitative insights into evolutionary mechanisms underpinning phylogenetic trees, a commonly used graph representation of evolution systems ranging from viruses to species. By developing limit theorems for a version of extended Pólya urn models in which negative entries are permitted for their replacement matrices, we present strong laws of large numbers and central limit theorems for asymptotic joint distributions of two subtree counting statistics, the number of cherries and that of pitchforks, for random phylogenetic trees generated by two widely use…
Let $τ(x)$ be the first time the reflected process $Y$ of a Levy processes $X$ crosses x>0. The main aim of the paper is to investigate the asymptotic dependence of the path functionals: $Y(t) = X(t) - \inf_{0\leq s\leq t}X(s)$, $M(t,x)=\sup_{0\leq s\leq t}Y(s)-x$ and $Z(x)=Y(τ(x))-x$. We prove that under Cramer's condition on X(1), the functionals $Y(t)$, $M(t,y)$ and $Z(x+y)$ are asymptotically independent as $\min\{t,y,x\}\to\infty$. We also characterise the law of the limiting overshoot $Z(\infty)$ of the reflected process. If, as $\min\{t,x\}\to\infty$, the quantity $t\te{-γx}$ has a posi…
In this paper, joint asymptotics of powered maxima for a triangular array of bivariate powered Gaussian random vectors are considered. Under the Hüsler-Reiss condition, limiting distributions of powered maxima are derived. Furthermore, the second-order expansions of the joint distributions of powered maxima are established under the refined Hüsler-Reiss condition.
In branching diffusions with immigration (BDI), particles travel on independent diffusion paths in $\mathbb{R}^d$, branch at position-dependent rates and leave offspring -- randomly scattered around the parent's death position -- according to position-dependent laws. We specify a set of conditions which grants ergodicity such that the invariant occupation measure is of finite total mass and admits a continuous Lebesgue density. Under discrete-time observation, BDI configurations being recorded at discrete times $iΔ$ only, $i\in\mathbb{N}_0$, we lose information about particle identities betwee…
We investigate percolation of the vacant set of random interlacements on $\mathbb{Z}^d$, $d\geq 3$, in the strongly percolative regime. We consider the event that the interlacement set at level $u$ disconnects the discrete blow-up of a compact set $A\subseteq \mathbb{R}^d$ from the boundary of an enclosing box. We derive asymptotic large deviation upper bounds on the probability that the local averages of the occupation times deviate from a specific function depending on the harmonic potential of $A$, when disconnection occurs. If certain critical levels coincide, which is plausible but open a…
