We derive necessary and sufficient conditions for an ambiskew polynomial ring to have a Hopf algebra structure of a certain type. This construction generalizes many known Hopf algebras, for example U(sl2), U_q(sl2) and the enveloping algebra of the 3-dimensional Heisenberg Lie algebra. In a torsion-free case we describe the finite-dimensional simple modules, in particular their dimensions and prove a Clebsch-Gordan decomposition theorem for the tensor product of two simple modules. We construct a Casimir type operator and prove that any finite-dimensional weight module is semisimple.
We provide necessary and sufficient conditions to extend the Hopf-Galois algebra structure on an algebra R to a generalized ambiskew ring based on R, in a way such that the added variables for the extension are skew-primitive in an appropriate sense. We show that the associated Hopf algebra is again a a generalized ambiskew ring, based on a suitable Hopf algebra H(R). Several examples are examined, including the Hopf-Galois objects over Uq(sl2).
Necessary and sufficient conditions are obtained for an ambiskew polynomial algebra A over a Hopf k-algebra R to possess the structure of a Hopf algebra extending that of R, in which the added variables X+ and X- are skew primitive. The coradical filtration is calculated, many examples are described, and properties determined.
We determine simplicity criteria in characteristics 0 and $p$ for a ubiquitous class of iterated skew polynomial rings in two indeterminates over a base ring. One obstruction to simplicity is the possible existence of a canonical normal element $z$. In the case where this element exists we give simplicity criteria for the rings obtained by inverting $z$ and the rings obtained by factoring out the ideal generated by $z$. The results are illustrated by numerous examples including higher quantized Weyl algebras and generalizations of some low-dimensional symplectic reflection algebras.
We determine criteria for the prime spectrum of an ambiskew polynomial algebra $R$ over an algebraically closed field $K$ to be akin to those of two of the principal examples of such an algebra, namely the universal enveloping algebra $U(sl_2)$ (in characteristic $0$) and its quantization $U_q(sl_2)$ (when $q$ is not a root of unity). More precisely, we aim to determine when the prime spectrum of $R$ consists of $0$, the ideals $(z-λ)R$ for some central element $z$ of $R$ and all $λ\in K$, and, for some positive integer $d$ and each positive integer $m$, $d$ height two prime ideals with Goldie…
The aim of the paper is to extend the class of generalized Weyl algebras to a larger class of rings (they are also called {\em generalized Weyl algebras}) that are determined by two ring endomorphisms rather than one as in the case of `old' GWAs. A new class of rings, the {\em diskew polynomial rings}, is introduced that is closely related to GWAs (they are GWAs under a mild condition). The, so-called, ambiskew polynomial rings are a small subclass of the class of diskew polynomial rings. Semisimplicity criteria are given for generalized Weyl algebras and diskew polynomial rings.
We study the flatness and the projectivity of Hopf algebras, defined over a Dedekind ring, over their Hopf subalgebras. We give a criterion for the faithful flatness and use it to show the faithful flatness of an arbitrary flat Hopf algebra upon its finite normal Hopf subalgebra. For the projectivity of a projective Hopf algebras we need some finiteness condition in terms of the module of integral. In particular we show the the module of integral has rank one.
Let $A$ be an algebra over a commutative ring $R$. If $R$ is noetherian and $A^\circ$ is pure in $R^A$, then the categories of rational left $A$-modules and right $A^\circ$-comodules are isomorphic. In the Hopf algebra case, we can also strengthen the Blattner-Montgomery duality theorem. Finally, we give sufficient conditions to get the purity of $A^\circ$ in $R^A$.
Two-dimensional integrable differential calculi for classes of Ore extensions of the polynomial ring and the Laurent polynomial ring in one variable are constructed. Thus it is concluded that all affine pointed Hopf domains of Gelfand-Kirillov dimension two which are not polynomial identity rings are differentially smooth.
We introduce the notion of the Frobenius-Perron dimension of an integral $\Bbb Z_+$-ring and give some applications of this notion to classification of finite dimensional quasi-Hopf algebras with a unique nontrivial simple module, and of quasi-Hopf and Hopf algebras of prime dimension $p$.
A ring $A$ is called Hopfian if $A$ cannot be isomorphic to a proper homomorphic image $A/J$. $A$ is called Bassian if there cannot be an injection of $A$ into a proper homomorphic image $A/J$. We consider classes of Hopfian and Bassian rings, and tie representability of algebras and chain conditions on ideals to these properties. In particular, any semiprime algebra satisfying the ACC on semiprime ideals is Hopfian, and any semiprime affine PI-algebra over a field is Bassian.
In this paper, we continue our study of the tensor product structure of category $\mathcal W$ of weight modules over the Hopf-Ore extensions $kG(χ^{-1}, a, 0)$ of group algebras $kG$, where $k$ is an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. We first describe the tensor product decomposition rules for all indecomposable weight modules under the assumption that the orders of $χ$ and $χ(a)$ are different. Then we describe the Green ring $r(\mathcal W)$ of the tensor category $\mathcal W$. It is shown that $r(\mathcal W)$ is isomorphic to the polynomial algebra over the group ring $\math…
This expository article presents a unified ring theoretic approach, based on the theory of Frobenius algebras, to a variety of results on Hopf algebras. These include a theorem of S. Zhu on the degrees of irreducible representations, the so-called class equation, the determination of the semisimplicity locus of the Grothendieck ring, the spectrum of the adjoint class and a non-vanishing result for the adjoint character.
This paper extends classical results in the invariant theory of finite groups and finite group schemes to the actions of finite Hopf algebras on commutative rings.
In this paper we prove that if $R$ is a commutative, reduced, local ring, then $R$ is Hopfian if and only if the ring $R[x]$ is Hopfian. This answers a question of Varadarajan, in the case when $R$ is a reduced local ring. We provide examples of non-Noetherian Hopfian commutative domains by proving that the finite dimensional domains are Hopfian. Also, we derive some general results related to Hopfian rings.
We develop Hopf-Galois theory for weak Hopf algebras, and recover analogs of classical results for Hopf algebras. Our methods are based on the recently introduced Galois theory for corings. We focus on the situatation where the weak Hopf algebra is a groupoid algebra or its dual. We obtain weak versions of strongly graded rings, and classical Galois extensions.
Certain sufficient homological and ring-theoretical conditions are given for a Hopf algebra to have bijective antipode with applications to noetherian Hopf algebras regarding their homological behaviors.
In this paper, we study the representations of the Hopf-Ore extensions $kG(χ^{-1}, a, 0)$ of group algebra $kG$, where $k$ is an algebraically closed field. We classify all finite dimensional simple $kG(χ^{-1}, a, 0)$-modules under the assumption $|χ|=\infty$ and $|χ|=|χ(a)|<\infty$ respectively, and all finite dimensional indecomposable $kG(χ^{-1}, a, 0)$-modules under the assumption that $kG$ is finite dimensional and semisimple, and $|χ|=|χ(a)|$. Moreover, we investigate the decomposition rules for the tensor product modules over $kG(χ^{-1}, a, 0)$ when char$(k)$=0. Finally, we consider the…
We present a unified ring theoretic approach, based on properties of the Casimir element of a symmetric algebra, to a variety of known divisibility results for the degrees of irreducible representations of semisimple Hopf algebras in characteristic 0. All these results are motivated by a classical theorem of Frobenius on the degrees of irreducible complex representations of finite groups.
It is proved in the paper that a Noetherian residually finite dimensional Hopf algebra is a flat module over any right Noetherian right coideal subalgebra. In the case of Hopf subalgebras we get faithful flatness. These results are obtained by verifying the existence of the classical quotient rings of those algebras. It is also proved that the antipode of either right or left Noetherian residually finite dimensional Hopf algebra is bijective. As a consequence, such a Hopf algebra is right and left Noetherian simultaneously.
We investigate when a skew polynomial extension T = R[x; σ, δ] of a Hopf algebra R admits a Hopf algebra structure, substantially generalising a theorem of Panov. When this construction is applied iteratively in characteristic 0 one obtains a large family of connected noetherian Hopf algebras of finite Gelfand-Kirillov dimension, including for example all enveloping algebras of finite dimensional solvable Lie algebras and all coordinate rings of unipotent groups. The properties of these Hopf algebras are investigated.
Integrals in Hopf algebras are an essential tool in studying finite dimensional Hopf algebras and their action on algebras. Over fields it has been shown by Sweedler that the existence of integrals in a Hopf algebra is equivalent to the Hopf algebra being finite dimensional. In this paper we examine how much of this is true for Hopf algebras over rings. We show that over any commutative ring R that is not a field there exists a Hopf algebra H over R containing a non-zero integral but not being finitely generated as R-module. On the contrary we show that Sweedler's equivalence is still valid fo…
We generalize the Wiener-Hopf factorization of Laurent series to more general commutative coefficient rings, and we give explicit formulas for the decomposition. We emphasize the algebraic nature of this factorization.
We study semisimple Hopf algebra actions on Artin-Schelter regular algebras and prove several upper bounds on the degrees of the minimal generators of the invariant subring, and on the degrees of syzygies of modules over the invariant subring. These results are analogues of results for group actions on commutative polynomial rings proved by Noether, Fogarty, Fleischmann, Derksen, Sidman, Chardin, and Symonds.
We study a Hopf algebra $H$, which is finitely generated and projective over a commutative ring $k$, as a $P$-Frobenius algebra. We define modular functions in this setting, and provide a complete proof of Radford's formula for the fourth power of the antipode, using Frobenius algebraic techniques. As further applications, we extend Etingof and Gelaki's result that a separable and coseparable Hopf algebra has antipode of order two, the result of Schneider that Hopf subalgebras are twisted Frobenius extensions, and show that the quantum double is always a Frobenius algebra.
In this paper, our objects of interest are Hopf Galois extensions (e.g., Hopf algebras, Galois field extensions, strongly graded algebras, crossed products, principal bundles, etc.) and families of noncommutative rings (e.g., skew polynomial rings, PBW extensions and skew PBW extensions, etc.). We collect and systematize questions, problems, properties and recent advances in both theories by explicitly developing examples and doing calculations that are usually omitted in the literature. In particular, for Hopf Galois extensions we consider approaches from the point of view of quantum torsors …
Let $K$ be a finite field extension of $\Q$ and let $N$ be a finite group with automorphism group $F=\Aut(N)$. R. Haggenmüller and B. Pareigis have shown that there is a bijection \[Θ: {\mathcal Gal}(K,F)\rightarrow {\mathcal Hopf}(K[N])\] from the collection of $F$-Galois extensions of $K$ to the collection of Hopf forms of the group ring $K[N]$. For $N=C_n$, $n\ge 1$, $C_p^m$, $p$ prime, $m\ge 1$, and $N=D_3,D_4,Q_8$, we show that $\Q[N]$ admits an absolutely semisimple Hopf form $H$ and find $L$ for which $Θ(L)=H$. Moreover, if $H$ is the Hopf algebra given by a Hopf-Galois structure on a G…
The so called induction functors appear in several areas of Algebra in different forms. Interesting examples are the induction functors in the Theory of Affine Algebraic groups. In this note we investigate the so called Hopf pairings (bialgebra pairings) and use them to study induction functors for affine group schemes over arbitrary commutative ground rings. We present also a special type of Hopf pairings (bialgebra pairings), satisfying the so called $α$-condition. For those pairings the induction functor is studied and a nice description of it is obtained. Along the paper several interestin…
Under the assumption that a residually finite dimensional Hopf algebra H has an Artinian ring of fractions it is proved that H is a flat module over any right coideal subalgebra satisfying a polynomial identity and is faithfully flat over any polynomial identity Hopf subalgebra. As a consequence we find a large class of Hopf algebras which are flat over all coideal subalgebras and are faithfully flat over all Hopf subalgebras.
In this work, we use probability groups, introduced by Harrison in 1979, as a tool to study a semisimple Hopf algebra $H$ with a commutative character ring and prove that the algebra generalized by the dual probability group is the center $Z(H)$ of $H$ and the product of two class sums is an integral combination up to a factor of $\dim (H)^{-1}$ of the class sums of $H$. We classify all the 2-integral probability groups with 2 or 3 elements.
We give some general results on the ring structure of Hochschild cohomology of smash products of algebras with Hopf algebras. We compute this ring structure explicitly for a large class of finite dimensional Hopf algebras of rank one.
We compute the mod-2 cohomology of the collection of all symmetric groups as a Hopf ring, where the second product is the transfer product of Strickland and Turner. We first give examples of related Hopf rings from invariant theory and representation theory. In addition to a Hopf ring presentation, we give geometric cocycle representatives and explicitly determine the structure as an algebra over the Steenrod algebra. All calculations are explicit, with an additive basis which has a clean graphical representation. We also briefly develop related Hopf ring structures on rings of symmetric invar…
We define a bi-skew brace to be a set $G$ with two group operations $\star$ and $\circ$ so that $(G, \circ, \star)$ is a skew brace with additive group $(G, \star)$ and also with additive group $(G, \circ)$. If $G$ is a skew brace, then $G$ corresponds to a Hopf Galois structure of type $(G, \star)$ on any Galois extension of fields with Galois group isomorphic to $(G, \circ)$. If $G$ is a bi-skew brace, then $G$ also corresponds to a Hopf Galois structure of type $(G, \circ)$ on a Galois extension of fields with Galois group isomorphic to $(G, \star)$. Many non-trivial examples exist. One sou…
Let $H$ be a finite dimensional Hopf algebra, and let $A$ be a left $H$-module algebra. Motivated by the study of the isolated singularities of $A^H$ and the endomorphism ring $\mathrm{End}_{A^H}(A)$, we introduce the concept of Hopf dense Galois extensions in this paper. Hopf dense Galois extensions yield certain equivalences between the quotient categories over $A$ and $A^H$. A special class of Hopf dense Galois extensions consits of the so-called densely group graded algebras, which are weaker versions of strongly graded algebras. A weaker version of Dade's Theorem holds for densely group g…
Let $H$ be a finite dimensional pointed rank one Hopf algebra of nilpotent type. We first determine all finite dimensional indecomposable $H$-modules up to isomorphism, and then establish the Clebsch-Gordan formulas for the decompositions of the tensor products of indecomposable $H$-modules by virtue of almost split sequences. The Green ring $r(H)$ of $H$ will be presented in terms of generators and relations. It turns out that the Green ring $r(H)$ is commutative and is generated by one variable over the Grothendieck ring $G_0(H)$ of $H$ modulo one relation. Moreover, $r(H)$ is Frobenius and …
In general, representation rings are well-known as Green rings from module categories of Hopf algebras. In this paper, we study Green rings in the context of monoidal categories such that representations of Hopf algebras can be investigated through Green rings of various levels from module categories to derived categories in the unified view-point. Firstly, as analogue of representation rings of Hopf algebras, we set up the so-called Green rings of monoidal categories, and then list some such categories including module categories, complex categories, homotopy categories, derived categories an…
We determine the Grothendieck ring of finite-dimensional comodules for the free Hopf algebra on a matrix coalgebra, and similarly for the free Hopf algebra with bijective antipode and other related universal quantum groups. The results turn out to be parallel to those for Wang and Van Daele's deformed universal compact quantum groups and Bichon's generalization of those results to universal cosovereign Hopf algebras: in all cases the rings are isomorphic to those of non-commutative polynomials over certain sets, these sets varying from case to case. In most cases we are able to give more preci…
Hopf-Galois extensions of rings generalize Galois extensions, with the coaction of a Hopf algebra replacing the action of a group. Galois extensions with respect to a group $G$ are the Hopf-Galois extensions with respect to the dual of the group algebra of $G$. Rognes recently defined an analogous notion of Hopf-Galois extensions in the category of structured ring spectra, motivated by the fundamental example of the unit map from the sphere spectrum to $MU$. This article introduces a theory of homotopic Hopf-Galois extensions in a monoidal category with compatible model category structure that…
Over a field of prime characteristic $p>2$, we prove that the cohomology rings of some pointed Hopf algebras of dimension $p^3$ are finitely generated. These are Hopf algebras arising in the ongoing classification of finite dimensional Hopf algebras in positive characteristic, and include bosonizations of Nichols algebras of Jordan type in a general setting as well as their liftings when $p=3$. Our techniques are applications of twisted tensor product resolutions and Anick resolutions in combination with May spectral sequences.
We provide a new algebraic description of the structure on the set of all unstable cohomology operations for a suitable generalised cohomology theory, E^*. Our description is as a graded and completed version of a Tall-Wraith monoid. The E^*-cohomology of a space X is a module for this Tall-Wraith monoid. We also show that the corresponding Hopf ring of unstable co-operations is a module for the Tall-Wraith monoid of unstable operations. Further examples are provided by considering operations from one theory to another.
Schur functions provide an integral basis of the ring of symmetric functions. It is shown that this ring has a natural Hopf algebra structure by identifying the appropriate product, coproduct, unit, counit and antipode, and their properties. Characters of covariant tensor irreducible representations of the classical groups GL(n), O(n) and Sp(n) are then expressed in terms of Schur functions, and the Hopf algebra is exploited in the determination of group-subgroup branching rules and the decomposition of tensor products. The analysis is carried out in terms of n-independent universal characters…
In establishing a more general version of the McKay correspondence, we prove Auslander's theorem for actions of semisimple Hopf algebras H on noncommutative Artin-Schelter regular algebras A of global dimension two, where A is a graded H-module algebra, and the Hopf action on A is inner faithful with trivial homological determinant. We also show that each fixed ring A^H under such an action arises an analogue of a coordinate ring of a Kleinian singularity.
The character ring \CGL of covariant irreducible tensor representations of the general linear group admits a Hopf algebra structure isomorphic to the Hopf algebra \Sym$ of symmetric functions. Here we study the character rings \CO and \CSp of the orthogonal and symplectic subgroups of the general linear group within the same framework of symmetric functions. We show that \CO and \CSp also admit natural Hopf algebra structures that are isomorphic to that of \CGL, and hence to \Sym. The isomorphisms are determined explicitly, along with the specification of standard bases for \CO and \CSp analog…
We introduce new polynomial invariants of a finite-dimensional semisimple and cosemisimple Hopf algebra A over a field by using the braiding structures of A. We investigate basic properties of the polynomial invariants including stability under extension of the base field. Furthermore, we show that our polynomial invariants are indeed tensor invariants of the representation category of A, and recognize the difference of the representation category and the representation ring of A. Actually, by computing and comparing polynomial invariants, we find new examples of pairs of Hopf algebras whose r…
We prove finite generation of the cohomology ring of any finite dimensional pointed Hopf algebra, having abelian group of grouplike elements, under some mild restrictions on the group order. The proof uses the recent classification by Andruskiewitsch and Schneider of such Hopf algebras. Examples include all of Lusztig's small quantum groups, whose cohomology was first computed explicitly by Ginzburg and Kumar, as well as many new pointed Hopf algebras. We also show that in general the cohomology ring of a Hopf algebra in a braided category is braided commutative. As a consequence we obtain som…
We introduce partial (co)actions of a Hopf algebra $H$ on an algebra. To this end, we introduce first the notion of lax coring, generalizing Wisbauer's notion of weak coring. We also have the dual notion of lax ring. Several duality results are given, and we develop Galois theory for partial $H$-comodule algebras.
In this paper we completely classify nontrivial semisimple Hopf algebras of dimension 16. We also compute all the possible structures of the Grothendieck ring of semisimple non-commutative Hopf algebras of dimension 16. Moreover, we prove that non-commutative semisimple Hopf algebras of dimension p^n, p is prime, cannot have a cyclic group of grouplikes.
Let A be any finite dimensional Hopf algebra over a field k. We specify the Tate and Tate-Hochschild cohomology for A and introduce cup products that make them become graded rings. We establish the relationship between these rings. In particular, the Tate-Hochschild cohomology of A is isomorphic (as algebras) to its Tate cohomology with coefficients in an adjoint module. Consequently, the Tate cohomology ring of A is a direct summand of its Tate-Hochschild cohomology ring. As an example, we explicitly compute both the Tate and Tate-Hochschild cohomology for the Sweedler algebra H_4.
Let $k$ be a commutative ring, $H$ a faithfully flat Hopf algebra with bijective antipode, $A$ a $k$-flat right $H$-comodule algebra. We investigate when a relative Hopf module is projective over the subring of coinvariants $B=A^{{\rm co}H}$, and we study the semisimplicity of the category of relative Hopf modules.
We study the diagram alphabet of knot moves associated with the character rings of certain matrix groups. The primary object is the Hopf algebra Char-GL of characters of the finite dimensional polynomial representations of the complex group GL(n) in the inductive limit, realised as the ring of symmetric functions Λ(X) on countably many variables X = {x_1,x_2, ...}. Isomorphic as spaces are the character rings Char-O and Char-Sp of the classical matrix subgroups of GL(n), the orthogonal and symplectic groups. We also analyse the formal character rings Char-H_π of algebraic subgroups of GL(n), c…
We show that there is a family of complex semisimple Hopf algebras that do not admit a Hopf order over any number ring. They are Drinfel'd twists of certain group algebras. The twist contains a scalar fraction which makes impossible the definability of such Hopf algebras over number rings. We also prove that a complex semisimple Hopf algebra satisfies Kaplansky's sixth conjecture if and only if it admits a weak order, in the sense of Rumynin and Lorenz, over the integers.
