Proposition 2.8 is omitted however the proof is correct. Some errors and misprints are corrected. Corollary 2.11 (now Corollary 2.10) is now in a corrected form
Let $G$ be a non-Engel group and let $L(G)$ be the set of all left Engel elements of $G$.
Associate with $G$ a graph $\mathcal{E}_G$ as follows: Take $G\backslash L(G)$ as vertices of $\mathcal{E}_G$ and join two distinct vertices $x$ and $y$ whenever $[x,_k y]\not=1$ and $[y,_k x]\not=1$ for all positive integers $k$. We call $\mathcal{E}_G$, the Engel graph of $G$. In this paper we study the graph theoretical properties of $\mathcal{E}_G$.
Given a finite group $G$, the Engel graph of $G$ is a directed graph encoding pairs of elements satisfying some Engel word. From the work of Detomi, Lucchini and Nemmi, the strongly connectivity of the Engel graph of an arbitrary group $G$ is reduced to the understanding of the strongly connectivity of the Engel graph of non-abelian simple groups. In this paper, we investigate the strongly connectivity of the Engel graph of finite non-abelian simple groups.
For a finite group $G,$ we investigate the direct graph $Γ(G),$ whose vertices are the non-hypercentral elements of $G$ and where there is an edge $x\mapsto y$ if and only if $[x,_ny]=1$ for some $n \in \mathbb N.$ We prove that $Γ(G)$ is always weakly connected and is strongly connected if $G/Z_{\infty}(G)$ is neither Frobenius nor almost simple.
Let R be an associative ring with unity and let [R] and U(R) denote the associated Lie ring (with [a,b]=ab-ba) and the group of units of R, respectively. In 1983 Gupta and Levin proved that if [R] is a nilpotent Lie ring of class c then U(R) is a nilpotent group of class at most c. The aim of the present note is to show that, in general, a similar statement does not hold if [R] is n-Engel. We construct an algebra R over a field of characteristic different from 2 and 3 such that the Lie algebra [R] is 5-Engel but U(R) is not a 5-Engel group.
We consider decidability problems associated with Engel's identity ($[\cdots[[x,y],y],\dots,y]=1$ for a long enough commutator sequence) in groups generated by an automaton. We give a partial algorithm that decides, given $x,y$, whether an Engel identity is satisfied. It succeeds, importantly, in proving that Grigorchuk's $2$-group is not Engel. We consider next the problem of recognizing Engel elements, namely elements $y$ such that the map $x\mapsto[x,y]$ attracts to $\{1\}$. Although this problem seems intractable in general, we prove that it is decidable for Grigorchuk's group: Engel eleme…
In the Engel group with its Carnot group structure we study subsets of locally finite subRiemannian perimeter and possessing constant subRiemannian normal. We prove the rectifiability of such sets: more precisely we show that, in some specific coordinates, they are upper-graphs of entire Lipschitz functions (with respect to the Euclidean distance). However we find that, when they are written as intrinsic upper-graphs with respect to the direction of the normal, then the function defining the set might even fail to be continuous. Nevertheless, we can prove that one can always find other horizon…
In \cite{1}, a class of gyrogroups $(G,\odot)$ has been associated to certain groups $(G,\cdot)$. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for $(G,\odot)$ to be gyrocommutative. We also prove that under a suitable assumption two finite groups central by a $2$-Engel group are isomorphic if and only if their associated gyrogroups are isomorphic.
Let $G$ be a finite group. A number of graphs with the vertex set $G$ have been studied, including the power graph, enhanced power graph, and commuting graph. These graphs form a hierarchy under the inclusion of edge sets, and it is useful to study them together. In addition, several authors have considered modifying the definition of these graphs by choosing a natural equivalence relation on the group such as equality, conjugacy, or equal orders, and joining two elements if there are elements in their equivalence class that are adjacent in the original graph. In this way, we enlarge the hiera…
We study non-degenerate involutive set-theoretic solutions (X,r) of the Yang-Baxter equation, we call them simply solutions. We show that the structure group G(X,r) of a finite non-trivial solution (X,r) cannot be an Engel group. It is known that the structure group G(X,r) of a finite multipermutation solution (X,r) is a poly-Z group, thus our result gives a rich source of examples of braided groups and left braces G(X,r) which are poly-Z groups but not Engel groups. We also show that a finite solution of the Yang-Baxter equation can be embedded in a convenient way into a finite brace and into…
We study some properties of the coset poset associated with the family of subgroups of class $\leq 2$ of a nilpotent group of class $\leq 3$. We prove that under certain assumptions on the group the coset poset is simply-connected if and only if the group is $2$-Engel, and $2$-connected if and only if the group is nilpotent of class $2$ or less. We determine the homotopy type of the coset poset for the group of $4\times 4$ upper unitriangular matrices over $\mathbb{F}_p$, and for the Burnside groups of exponent $3$.
We associate a graph ${\mathcal N}_{S}$ with a semigroup $S$ (called the upper non-nilpotent graph of $S$). The vertices of this graph are the elements of $S$ and two vertices are adjacent if they generate a semigroup that is not nilpotent (in the sense of Malcev). In case $S$ is a group this graph has been introduced by A. Abdollahi and M. Zarrin and some remarkable properties have been proved. The aim of this paper is to study this graph (and some related graphs, such as the non-commuting graph) and to discover the algebraic structure of $S$ determined by the associated graph. It is shown th…
The power graph of a group is the simple graph whose vertices are the group elements and two vertices are adjacent whenever one of them is a positive power of the other. We characterize the finite nilpotent groups whose power graphs have equal vertex connectivity and minimum degree.
For every infinite sequence $ω=x_1,x_2,...$, with $x_i\in\{0,1\}$, we construct an infinite 4-regular graph $X_ω$. These graphs are precisely the Schreier graphs of the action of a certain self-similar group on the space $\{0,1\}^{\infty}$. We solve the isomorphism and local isomorphism problems for these graphs, and determine their automorphism groups. Finally, we prove that all graphs $X_ω$ have intermediate growth.
In this paper, we investigate a relation between finite graphs, simplicial flag complexes and right-angled Coxeter groups, and we provide a class of reconstructible finite graphs. We show that if $Γ$ is a finite graph which is the 1-skeleton of some simplicial flag complex $L$ which is a homology manifold of dimension $n \ge 1$, then the graph $Γ$ is reconstructible.
In this paper we have investigated some properties of the power graph and commuting graph associated with a finite group, using their tree-numbers. Among other things, it has been shown that the simple group $L_2(7)$ can be characterized through the tree-number of its power graph. Moreover, the classification of groups with power-free decomposition is presented. Finally, we have obtained an explicit formula concerning the tree-number of commuting graphs associated with the Suzuki simple groups.
Motivated by the Problem $164$ proposed by Y. Berkovich and E. Zhmud' in their book "Characters of finite groups, Part $1$", we give a characterization of finite groups whose irreducible character codegrees are prime powers. This is based on a new kind of character graphs of finite groups associated with codegrees. Such graphs have close and obvious connections with character coedgree graphs. For example, they have the same number of connected components. By analogy with the work of finite groups whose character graphs (associated with degrees) have no triangles, we conduct a result of classif…
Let $G$ be a finite group. The solubility graph associated with the finite group $G$, denoted by $Γ_{\cal S}(G)$, is a simple graph whose vertices are the non-trivial elements of $G$, and there is an edge between two distinct elements $x$ and $y$ if and only if $\langle x, y\rangle$ is a soluble subgroup of $G$. In this paper, we examine some properties of solubility graphs.
In this paper we study the Reidemeister spectrum of 2-step nilpotent groups associated to graphs. We develop three methods, based on the structure of the graph, that can be used to determine the Reidemeister spectrum of the associated group in terms of the Reidemeister spectra of groups associated to smaller graphs. We illustrate our methods for several families of graphs, including all the groups associated to a graph with at most four vertices. We also apply our results in the context of topological fixed point theory for nilmanifolds.
The non-centralizer graph of a finite group $G$ is the simple graph $Υ_G$ whose vertices are the elements of $G$ with two vertices $x$ and $y$ are adjacent if their centralizers are distinct. The induced subgroup of $Υ_G$ associated with the vertex set $G\setminus Z(G)$ is called the induced non-centralizer graph of $G$. The notions of non-centralizer and induced non-centralizer graphs were introduced by Tolue in \cite{to15}. A finite group is called regular (resp. induced regular) if its non-centralizer graph (resp. induced non-centralizer graph) is regular. In this paper we study the structu…
It is conjectured that the central quotient of every irreducible Artin group is either virtually cyclic or acylindrically hyperbolic. We prove this conjecture for Artin groups associated to triangle-free graphs and Artin groups of large type associated to cones over square-free bipartite graphs. In fact, we treat Artin groups that are known to be CAT(0) groups by a result of Brady and McCammond.
Let $P_0(A_n), \widetilde{P}_0(A_n), P_0(\mathcal{T}(A_n))$ and $\mathcal{O}_0(A_n)$ be respectively the proper power graph, the proper quotient power graph, the proper power type graph and the proper order graph of the alternating group $A_n$, for $n\geq 3.$ We determine the number of the components of those graphs. In particular, we prove that the power graph $P(A_n)$ is $2$-connected if and only if the power type graph $P(\mathcal{T}(A_n))$ is $2$-connected, if and only if either $n = 3$ or none of $n, n-1, n-2, \frac{n}{2}$ and ${\frac{n-1}{2}}$ is a prime. We also give some information on…
In this short note we classify the Cartan subalgebras in all von Neumann algebras associated with graph product groups and their free ergodic measure preserving actions on probability spaces.
Charney and Morris-Wright showed acylindrical hyperbolicity of Artin groups of infinite type associated with graphs that are not joins, by studying clique-cube complexes and actions on them. In this paper, by developing their study and formulating some additional discussion, we demonstrate that acylindrical hyperbolicity holds for more general Artin groups. Indeed, we are able to treat Artin groups of infinite type associated with graphs that are not cones.
To a large class of graphs of groups we associate a C*-algebra universal for generators and relations. We show that this C*-algebra is stably isomorphic to the crossed product induced from the action of the fundamental group of the graph of groups on the boundary of its Bass-Serre tree. We characterise when this action is minimal, and find a sufficient condition under which it is locally contractive. In the case of generalised Baumslag-Solitar graphs of groups (graphs of groups in which every group is infinite cyclic) we also characterise topological freeness of this action. We are then able t…
