The contribution of this PhD thesis is to construct for each vector bundle $ξ$ an orthogonal ring spectrum $R$, weakly equivalent to $S[ΩM]$, together with an involution on $R$. On the homotopy groups $π_*S[ΩM]$ our involution corresponds to parallel transportation in $ξ$, and reversing loops in $M$. The main result is theorem 4.3.26. The orthogonal ring spectrum $R$ with involution is intended as input for $LA$, $K$, $TC$ and $THH$, the ultimate goal is to compute homotopy groups of automorphism groups. We take a first step in this direction by considering the definition and a few basic properties of $TC(L)$ and $THH(L)$ for arbitrary orthogonal ring spectra $L$ (with involution).
The main result of this paper is the computation of TR^n_α(F_p;p) for αin R(S^1). These R(S^1)-graded TR-groups are the equivariant homotopy groups naturally associated to the S^1-spectrum THH(F_p), the topological Hochschild S^1-spectrum. This computation, which extends a partial result of Hesselholt and Madsen, provides the first example of the R(S^1)-graded TR-groups of a ring. These groups arise in algebraic K-theory computations, and are particularly important to the understanding of the algebraic K-theory of non-regular schemes.
We compute the $\mathbb{A}^1$-localization of several invariants of schemes namely, topological Hochschild homology ($\mathrm{THH}$), topological cyclic homology ($\mathrm{TC}$) and topological periodic cyclic homology ($\mathrm{TP}$). This procedure is quite brutal and kills the completed versions of most of these invariants. The main ingredient for the vanishing statements is the vanishing of $\mathbb{A}^1$-localization of de Rham cohomology (and, eventually, crystalline cohomology) in positive characteristics.
We identify the topological Hochschild homology (THH) of the Thom spectrum associated to an E_\infty classifying map X -> BG, for G an appropriate group or monoid (e.g. U, O, and F). We deduce the comparison from the observation of McClure, Schwanzl, and Vogt that THH of a cofibrant commutative S-algebra (E_\infty ring spectrum) R can be described as an indexed colimit together with a verification that the Lewis-May operadic Thom spectrum functor preserves indexed colimits. We prove a splitting result THH(Mf) \htp Mf \sma BX_+ which yields a convenient description of THH(MU). This splitting ho…
The topological Hochschild homology THH(R) of a commutative S-algebra (E_infty ring spectrum) R naturally has the structure of a commutative R-algebra in the strict sense, and of a Hopf algebra over R in the homotopy category. We show, under a flatness assumption, that this makes the Boekstedt spectral sequence converging to the mod p homology of THH(R) into a Hopf algebra spectral sequence. We then apply this additional structure to the study of some interesting examples, including the commutative S-algebras ku, ko, tmf, ju and j, and to calculate the homotopy groups of THH(ku) and THH(ko) af…
We introduce notions of unramified and totally ramified maps in great generality - for commutative rings, schemes, ring spectra, or derived schemes. We prove that the definition is equivalent to the classical definition in the case of rings of integers in number fields. The new definition leads directly (without computational techniques) to a calculation of topological Hochschild homology for rings of integers. We show that THH(R) is the homotopy cofiber of a map $R[ΩS^3]\otimes_RΩ^1_{R/\mathbb{Z}}\to R[ΩS^3\langle 3\rangle]$, so there is a long exact sequence $\cdots\to H_\ast(ΩS^3;Ω^1_{R/\ma…
In this work we study the $E_{\infty}$-ring $\text{THH}(\mathbb{F}_p)$ as a graded spectrum. Following an identification at the level of $E_2$-algebras with $\mathbb{F}_p[ΩS^3]$, the group ring of the $E_1$-group $ΩS^3$ over $\mathbb{F}_p$, we show that the grading on $\text{THH}(\mathbb{F}_p)$ arises from decomposition on the cyclic bar construction of the pointed monoid $ΩS^3$. This allows us to use trace methods to compute the algebraic $K$-theory of $\text{THH}(\mathbb{F}_p)$. We also show that as an $E_2$ $H\mathbb{F}_p$-ring, $\text{THH}(\mathbb{F}_p)$ is uniquely determined by its homot…
We define a topological Hochschild (THH) and cyclic (TC) homology theory for differential graded (dg) categories and construct several non-trivial natural transformations from algebraic K-theory to THH(-). In an intermediate step, we prove that the homotopy theory of dg categories is Quillen equivalent, through a four step zig-zag of Quillen equivalences, to the homotopy theory of Eilenberg-Mac Lane spectral categories. Finally, we show that over the rationals two dg categories are topological equivalent if and only if they are quasi-equivalent.
In this paper we continue our study of logarithmic topological Hochschild homology. We show that the inclusion of the connective Adams summand into the p-local complex connective K-theory spectrum, equipped with suitable log structures, is a formally log THH-etale map, and compute the V(1)-homotopy of their logarithmic topological Hochschild homology spectra. As an application, we recover Ausoni's computation of the V(1)-homotopy of the ordinary THH of ku.
We calculate the integral homotopy groups of THH(l) at any prime and of THH(ko) at p=2, where l is the Adams summand of the connective complex p-local K-theory spectrum and ko is the connective real K-theory spectrum.
We calculate the topological Hochschild homology groups of a maximal order in a central algebra over the rationals. Since the positive-dimensional THH groups consist only of torsion, we do this one prime ideal at a time for all the nonzero prime ideals in the center of the maximal order. This allows us to reduce the problem to studying the THH groups of maximal orders A in simple algebras over Q_p. We show that the topological Hochschild homology of A/(p) splits as the tensor product of its Hochschild homology and the topological Hochschild homology of F_p. We use this result in Brun's spectra…
We present a way of constructing and deforming diffeomorphisms of manifolds endowed with a Lie group action. This is applied to the study of exotic diffeomorphisms and involutions of spheres and to the equivariant homotopy of Lie groups.
We prove that certain involutions defined by Vogell and Burghelea-Fiedorowicz on the rational algebraic $K$-theory of spaces coincide. This gives a way to compute the positive and negative eigenspaces of the involution on rational homotopy groups of pseudoisotopy spaces from the involution on rational $S^{1}$-equivariant homology group of the free loop space of a simply-connected manifold. As an application, we give explicit dimensions of the open manifolds $V$ that appear in Belegradek-Farrell-Kapovitch's work for which the spaces of complete nonnegatively curved metrics on $V$ have nontrivia…
Let $R$ be an $E_\infty$-ring spectrum. Given a map $ζ$ from a space $X$ to $BGL_1R$, one can construct a Thom spectrum, $X^ζ$, which generalises the classical notion of Thom spectrum for spherical fibrations in the case $R=S^0$, the sphere spectrum. If $X$ is a loop space ($\simeq ΩY$) and $ζ$ is homotopy equivalent to $Ωf$ for a map $f$ from $Y$ to $B^2GL_1R$, then the Thom spectrum has an $A_\infty$-ring structure. The Topological Hochschild Homology of these $A_\infty$-ring spectra is equivalent to the Thom spectrum of a map out of the free loop space of $Y$. This paper considers the case …
For finite connected graphs $Γ$ and $G$, with $Γ$ admitting a free involution $τ$, we characterize the based homotopy classes $α\in[Γ,G]$ for which the Borsuk-Ulam property holds in the sense of Gonçalves, Guaschi and Casteluber-Laass, i.e., the homotopy classes $α$ so that each of its representatives $f\inα$ satisfies $f(x) = f(τ\cdot x)$ for some $x\inΓ$. This is attained through a graph-braid-group perspective aided by the use of discrete Morse theory.
We compute the $G$-equivariant homotopy type of the real topological cyclic homology of spherical group rings with anti-involution induced by taking inverses in the group, where $G$ denotes the group $Gal(\mathbb{C}/\mathbb{R})$. The real topological Hochschild homology of a spherical group ring $\mathbb{S}[Γ]$, with anti-involution as described, is an $O(2)$-cyclotomic spectrum and we construct a map commuting with the cyclotomic structures from the $O(2)$-equivariant suspension spectrum of the dihedral bar construction on $Γ$ to the real topological Hochschild homology of $\mathbb{S}[Γ]$, wh…
The Dold manifold $ P(m,n)$ is the quotient of $S^m \times \mathbb{C}P^n$ by the free involution that acts antipodally on $ S^m $ and by complex conjugation on $ \mathbb{C}P^n $. In this paper, we investigate free actions of finite groups on products of Dold manifolds. We show that if a finite group $ G $ acts freely and mod 2 cohomologically trivially on a finite-dimensional CW-complex homotopy equivalent to ${\displaystyle \prod_{i=1}^{k} P(2m_i,n_i)}$, then $G\cong (\mathbb{Z}_2)^l$ for some $l\leq k$. This is achieved by first proving a similar assertion for $ \displaystyle \prod_{i=1}^{k}…
In the early 1940's, P.A.Smith showed that if a finite p-group G acts on a finite complex X that is mod $p$ acyclic, then its space of fixed points, X^G, will also be mod p acyclic. In their recent study of the Balmer spectrum of equivariant stable homotopy theory, Balmer and Sanders were led to study chromatic versions of this statement, with the question: given H<G and n, what is the smallest r such that if X^H is acyclic in the (n+r)th Morava K-theory, then X^G must be acyclic in the nth Morava K-theory? Barthel et.al. then answered this when G is abelian, by finding general lower and upper…
