We study the free (associative, non-commutative) Baxter algebra on one generator. The first explicit description of this object is due to Ebrahimi-Fard and Guo. We provide an alternative description in terms of a certain class of trees, which form a linear basis for this algebra. We use this to treat other related cases, particularly that in which the Baxter map is required to be quasi-idempotent, in a unified manner. Each case corresponds to a different class of trees.
Our main focus is on the underlying combinatorics. In several cases, we provide bijections between our various classes of trees and more familiar combinatorial objects including certain Schroeder paths and Motzkin paths. We calculate the dimensions of the homogeneous components of these algebras (with respect to a bidegree related to the number of nodes and the number of angles in the trees) and the corresponding generating series. An important feature is that the combinatorics is captured by the idempotent case; the others are obtained from this case by various binomial transforms. We also relate free Baxter algebras to Loday's dendriform trialgebras and dialgebras. We show that the free dendriform trialgebra (respectively, dialgebra) on one generator embeds in the free Baxter algebra with a quasi-idempotent map (respectively, with a quasi-idempotent map and an idempotent generator). This refines results of Ebrahimi-Fard and Guo.
We provide further boson-fermion q-polynomial identities for the `finitised' Virasoro characters χ^{p, p'}_{r,s} of the Forrester-Baxter minimal models M(p, p'), for certain values of r and s. The construction is based on a detailed analysis of the combinatorics of the set P^{p, p'}_{a, b, c}(L) of q-weighted, length-L Forrester-Baxter paths, whose generating function χ^{p, p'}_{a, b, c}(L) provides a finitisation of χ^{p, p'}_{r,s}. In this paper, we restrict our attention to the case where the startpoint a and endpoint b of each path both belong to the set of Takahashi lengths. In the limit …
We give explicit formulae and study the combinatorics of an identity holding in all Rota-Baxter algebras. We describe the specialization of this identity for a couple of examples of Rota-Baxter algebras.
We introduce the notion of a matching Rota-Baxter algebra motivated by the recent work on multiple pre-Lie algebras arising from the study of algebraic renormalization of regularity structures~[10,18]. This notion is also related to iterated integrals with multiple kernels and solutions of the associative polarized Yang-Baxter equation. Generalizing the natural connection of Rota-Baxter algebras with dendriform algebras to matching Rota-Baxter algebras , we obtain the notion of matching dendriform algebras. As in the classical case of one operation, matching Rota-Baxter algebras and matching d…
By means of a new notion of subforests of an angularly decorated rooted forest, we give a combinatorial construction of a coproduct on the free Rota-Baxter algebra on angularly decorated rooted forests. We show that this coproduct equips the Rota-Baxter algebra with a bialgebra structure and further a Hopf algebra structure.
In this paper we study the adjoint functors between the category of Rota-Baxter algebras and the categories of dendriform dialgebras and trialgebras. In analogy to the well-known theory of the adjoint functor between the category of associative algebras and Lie algebras, we first give an explicit construction of free Rota-Baxter algebras and then apply it to obtain universal enveloping Rota-Baxter algebras of dendriform dialgebras and trialgebras. We further show that free dendriform dialgebras and trialgebras, as represented by binary planar trees and planar trees, are canonical subalgebras o…
Recent developments of Baxter algebras have lead to applications to combinatorics, number theory and mathematical physics. We relate Baxter algebras to Stirling numbers of the first kind and the second kind, partitions and multinomial coefficients. This allows us to apply congruences from number theory to obtain congruences in Baxter algebras.
A Baxter algebra is a commutative algebra $A$ that carries a generalized integral operator. In the first part of this paper we review past work of Baxter, Miller, Rota and Cartier in this area and explain more recent work on explicit constructions of free Baxter algebras that extended the constructions of Rota and Cartier. In the second part of the paper we will use these explicit constructions to relate Baxter algebras to Hopf algebras and give applications of Baxter algebras to the umbral calculus in combinatorics.
Gian-Carlo Rota suggested in one of his last articles the problem of developing a theory around the notion of integration algebras, complementary to the already existing theory of differential algebras. This idea was mainly motivated by Rota's deep appreciation for Kuo-Tsai Chen's seminal work on iterated integrals. As a starting point for such a theory of integration algebras Rota proposed to consider a particular operator identity first introduced by the mathematician Glen Baxter. Later it was coined Rota-Baxter identity. In this article we briefly recall basic properties of Rota--Baxter alg…
The cyclic shift graph of a monoid is the graph whose vertices are elements of the monoid and whose edges link elements that differ by a cyclic shift. This paper examines the cyclic shift graphs of `plactic-like' monoids, whose elements can be viewed as combinatorial objects of some type: aside from the plactic monoid itself (the monoid of Young tableaux), examples include the hypoplactic monoid (quasi-ribbon tableaux), the sylvester monoid (binary search trees), the stalactic monoid (stalactic tableaux), the taiga monoid (binary search trees with multiplicities), and the Baxter monoid (pairs …
In this paper we study ascending chain conditions in a free Baxter algebra by making use of explicit constructions of free Baxter algebras that were obtained recently. We investigate ascending chain conditions both for ideals and for Baxter ideals. The free Baxter algebras under consideration include free Baxter algebras on sets and free Baxter algebras on algebras. We also consider complete free Baxter algebras.
We study Hom-type analogs of Rota-Baxter and dendriform algebras, called Rota-Baxter $G$-Hom-associative algebras and Hom-dendriform algebras. Several construction results are proved. Free algebras for these objects are explicitly constructed. Various functors between these categories, as well as an adjunction between the categories of Rota-Baxter Hom-associative algebras and of Hom-(tri)dendriform algebras, are constructed.
A Rota-Baxter algebra, also known as a Baxter algebra, is an algebra with a linear operator satisfying a relation, called the Rota-Baxter relation, that generalizes the integration by parts formula. Most of the studies on Rota-Baxter algebras have been for commutative algebras. Two constructions of free commutative Rota-Baxter algebras were obtained by Rota and Cartier in the 1970s and a third one by Keigher and one of the authors in the 1990s in terms of mixable shuffles. Recently, noncommutative Rota-Baxter algebras have appeared both in physics in connection with the work of Connes and Krei…
By applying a recent construction of free Baxter algebras, we obtain a new class of Hopf algebras that generalizes the classical divided power Hopf algebra. We also study conditions under which these Hopf algebras are isomorphic.
Recent advances in stochastic PDEs, Hopf algebras of typed trees and integral equations have inspired the study of algebraic structures with replicating operations. To understand their algebraic and combinatorial nature, we first use rooted forests with multiple decoration sets to construct free Hopf algebras with multiple Hochschild 1-cocycle conditions. Applying the universal property of the underlying operated algebras and the method of Gröbner-Shirshov bases, we then construct free objects in the category of matching Rota-Baxter algebras which is a generalization of Rota-Baxter algebras to…
The study of free Baxter algebras was started by Rota and Cartier thirty years ago. We continue this study by applying two recent constructions of free Baxter algebras. We investigate the basic structure of a free Baxter algebra, and characterize in detail when a free Baxter algebra is a domain or a reduced algebra. We also describe the nilpotent radical of a free Baxter algebra when it is not reduced.
We study some combinatorial and algebraic properties of certain quadratic algebras related with dynamical classical and classical Yang-Baxter equations. One can find more details about the content of present paper in Extended Abstract.
We apply recent constructions of free Baxter algebras to the study of the umbral calculus. We give a characterization of the umbral calculus in terms of Baxter algebra. This characterization leads to a natural generalization of the umbral calculus that include the classical umbral calculus in a family of $λ$-umbral calculi parameterized by $λ$ in the base ring.
The word problem for an arbitrary associative Rota-Baxter algebra is solved. This leads to a noncommutative generalization of the classical Spitzer identities. Links to other combinatorial aspects, particularly of interest in physics, are indicated.
We continue the study of free Baxter algebras. There are two goals of this paper. The first goal is to extend the construction of shuffle Baxter algebras to completions of Baxter algebras. This process is motivated by a construction of Cartier and is analogous to the process of completing a polynomial algebra to obtain a power series algebra. However, as we will see later, unlike the close similarity of properties of a polynomial algebra and a power series algebra, properties of a shuffle Baxter algebra and its completion can be quite different.
We study multiple zeta values and their generalizations from the point of view of Rota--Baxter algebras. We obtain a general framework for this purpose and derive relations on multiple zeta values from relations in Rota--Baxter algebras.
In this paper we generalize the well-known construction of shuffle product algebras by using mixable shuffles, and prove that any free Baxter algebra is isomorphic to a mixable shuffle product algebra. This gives an explicit construction of the free Baxter algebra, extending the work of Rota and Cartier.
We study the ring theoretical structures of mixable shuffle algebras and their associated free commutative Rota-Baxter algebras. For this study we utilize the connection of the mixable shuffle algebras with the overlapping shuffle algebra of Hazewinkel, quasi-shuffle algebras of Hoffman and quasi-symmetric functions. This connection allows us to apply methods and results on shuffle products and Lyndon words on ordered sets. As a result, we obtain structure theorems for a large class of mixable shuffle algebras and free commutative Rota-Baxter algebras with various coefficient rings.
We give a new construction of a Hopf subalgebra of the Hopf algebra of Free quasi-symmetric functions whose bases are indexed by objects belonging to the Baxter combinatorial family (i.e. Baxter permutations, pairs of twin binary trees, etc.). This construction relies on the definition of the Baxter monoid, analog of the plactic monoid and the sylvester monoid, and on a Robinson-Schensted-like insertion algorithm. The algebraic properties of this Hopf algebra are studied. This Hopf algebra appeared for the first time in the work of Reading [Lattice congruences, fans and Hopf algebras, Journal …
This paper establishes a uniform procedure to split the operations in any algebraic operad, generalizing previous known notions of splitting algebraic structures from the dendriform algebra of Loday that splits the associative operation to the successors that split any binary operad. Examples are provided for various $n$-associative algebras, $n$-Lie algebras, $A_\infty$ algebras and $L_\infty$ algebras. Further, the concept of a Rota-Baxter operator, first showing its importance in the associative and Lie algebra context and then generalized to any binary operads, is generalized to arbitrary …
We study generating functions in the context of Rota-Baxter algebras. We show that exponential generating functions can be naturally viewed in a very special case of complete free commutative Rota-Baxter algebras. This allows us to use free Rota-Baxter algebras to give a broad class of algebraic structures in which generalizations of generating functions can be studied. We generalize the product formula and composition formula for exponential power series. We also give generating functions both for known number families such as Stirling numbers of the second kind and partition numbers, and for…
