A Baxter algebra is a commutative algebra $A$ that carries a generalized integral operator. In the first part of this paper we review past work of Baxter, Miller, Rota and Cartier in this area and explain more recent work on explicit constructions of free Baxter algebras that extended the constructions of Rota and Cartier. In the second part of the paper we will use these explicit constructions to relate Baxter algebras to Hopf algebras and give applications of Baxter algebras to the umbral calculus in combinatorics.
In this paper we study ascending chain conditions in a free Baxter algebra by making use of explicit constructions of free Baxter algebras that were obtained recently. We investigate ascending chain conditions both for ideals and for Baxter ideals. The free Baxter algebras under consideration include free Baxter algebras on sets and free Baxter algebras on algebras. We also consider complete free Baxter algebras.
By applying a recent construction of free Baxter algebras, we obtain a new class of Hopf algebras that generalizes the classical divided power Hopf algebra. We also study conditions under which these Hopf algebras are isomorphic.
The study of free Baxter algebras was started by Rota and Cartier thirty years ago. We continue this study by applying two recent constructions of free Baxter algebras. We investigate the basic structure of a free Baxter algebra, and characterize in detail when a free Baxter algebra is a domain or a reduced algebra. We also describe the nilpotent radical of a free Baxter algebra when it is not reduced.
We continue the study of free Baxter algebras. There are two goals of this paper. The first goal is to extend the construction of shuffle Baxter algebras to completions of Baxter algebras. This process is motivated by a construction of Cartier and is analogous to the process of completing a polynomial algebra to obtain a power series algebra. However, as we will see later, unlike the close similarity of properties of a polynomial algebra and a power series algebra, properties of a shuffle Baxter algebra and its completion can be quite different.
We study multiple zeta values and their generalizations from the point of view of Rota--Baxter algebras. We obtain a general framework for this purpose and derive relations on multiple zeta values from relations in Rota--Baxter algebras.
In this paper we generalize the well-known construction of shuffle product algebras by using mixable shuffles, and prove that any free Baxter algebra is isomorphic to a mixable shuffle product algebra. This gives an explicit construction of the free Baxter algebra, extending the work of Rota and Cartier.
A Rota-Baxter operator of weight $λ$ is an abstraction of both the integral operator (when $λ=0$) and the summation operator (when $λ=1$). We similarly define a differential operator of weight $λ$ that includes both the differential operator (when $λ=0$) and the difference operator (when $λ=1$). We further consider an algebraic structure with both a differential operator of weight $λ$ and a Rota-Baxter operator of weight $λ$ that are related in the same way that the differential operator and the integral operator are related by the First Fundamental Theorem of Calculus. We construct free objec…
In this paper, we begin a systematic study of modified Rota-Baxter algebras, as an associative analogue of the modified classical Yang-Baxter equation. We construct free commutative modified Rota-Baxter algebras by a variation of the shuffle product and describe the structure both recursively and explicitly. We then provide these algebras with a Hopf algebra structure by applying a Hochschild cocycle.
We introduce the notion of a matching Rota-Baxter algebra motivated by the recent work on multiple pre-Lie algebras arising from the study of algebraic renormalization of regularity structures~[10,18]. This notion is also related to iterated integrals with multiple kernels and solutions of the associative polarized Yang-Baxter equation. Generalizing the natural connection of Rota-Baxter algebras with dendriform algebras to matching Rota-Baxter algebras , we obtain the notion of matching dendriform algebras. As in the classical case of one operation, matching Rota-Baxter algebras and matching d…
By means of a new notion of subforests of an angularly decorated rooted forest, we give a combinatorial construction of a coproduct on the free Rota-Baxter algebra on angularly decorated rooted forests. We show that this coproduct equips the Rota-Baxter algebra with a bialgebra structure and further a Hopf algebra structure.
We study the ring theoretical structures of mixable shuffle algebras and their associated free commutative Rota-Baxter algebras. For this study we utilize the connection of the mixable shuffle algebras with the overlapping shuffle algebra of Hazewinkel, quasi-shuffle algebras of Hoffman and quasi-symmetric functions. This connection allows us to apply methods and results on shuffle products and Lyndon words on ordered sets. As a result, we obtain structure theorems for a large class of mixable shuffle algebras and free commutative Rota-Baxter algebras with various coefficient rings.
The characteristic is a simple yet important invariant of an algebra. In this paper, we study the characteristic of a Rota-Baxter algebra, called the Rota-Baxter characteristic. We introduce an invariant, called the ascent set, of a Rota-Baxter characteristic. By studying its properties, we classify Rota-Baxter characteristics in the homogenous case and relate Rota-Baxter characteristics in general to the homogeneous case through initial ideals. We show that the Rota-Baxter quotients of Rota-Baxter characteristics have the same underlying sets as those in the homogeneous case. We also give a m…
We study Hom-type analogs of Rota-Baxter and dendriform algebras, called Rota-Baxter $G$-Hom-associative algebras and Hom-dendriform algebras. Several construction results are proved. Free algebras for these objects are explicitly constructed. Various functors between these categories, as well as an adjunction between the categories of Rota-Baxter Hom-associative algebras and of Hom-(tri)dendriform algebras, are constructed.
A commutative Rota-Baxter algebra can be regarded as a commutative algebra that carries an abstraction of the integral operator. With the motivation of generalizing the study of algebraic geometry to Rota-Baxter algebra, we extend the central concept of localization for commutative algebras to commutative Rota-Baxter algebras. The existence of such a localization is proved and, under mild conditions, its explicit constructions are obtained. The existence of tensor products of commutative Rota-Baxter algebras is also proved and the compatibility of localization and tensor product of Rota-Baxter…
The Rota-Baxter algebra and the shuffle product are both algebraic structures arising from integral operators and integral equations. Free commutative Rota-Baxter algebras provide an algebraic framework for integral equations with the simple Riemann integral operator. The Zinbiel algebras form a category in which the shuffle product algebra is the free object. Motivated by algebraic structures underlying integral equations involving multiple integral operators and kernels, we study commutative matching Rota-Baxter algebras and construct the free objects making use of the shuffle product with m…
We establish the Gröbner-Shirshov bases theory for differential Lie $Ω$-algebras. As an application, we give a linear basis of a free differential Lie Rota-Baxter algebra on a set.
In this paper we study the adjoint functors between the category of Rota-Baxter algebras and the categories of dendriform dialgebras and trialgebras. In analogy to the well-known theory of the adjoint functor between the category of associative algebras and Lie algebras, we first give an explicit construction of free Rota-Baxter algebras and then apply it to obtain universal enveloping Rota-Baxter algebras of dendriform dialgebras and trialgebras. We further show that free dendriform dialgebras and trialgebras, as represented by binary planar trees and planar trees, are canonical subalgebras o…
A Rota-Baxter algebra, also known as a Baxter algebra, is an algebra with a linear operator satisfying a relation, called the Rota-Baxter relation, that generalizes the integration by parts formula. Most of the studies on Rota-Baxter algebras have been for commutative algebras. Two constructions of free commutative Rota-Baxter algebras were obtained by Rota and Cartier in the 1970s and a third one by Keigher and one of the authors in the 1990s in terms of mixable shuffles. Recently, noncommutative Rota-Baxter algebras have appeared both in physics in connection with the work of Connes and Krei…
Rota-Baxter operators are an algebraic abstraction of integration. Following this classical connection, we study the relationship between Rota-Baxter operators and integrals in the case of the polynomial algebra $\mathbf{k}[x]$. We consider two classes of Rota-Baxter operators, monomial ones and injective ones. For the first class, we apply averaging operators to determine monomial Rota-Baxter operators. For the second class, we make use of the double product on Rota-Baxter algebras.
In this paper, we obtain respectively some new linear bases of free unitary (modified) weighted differential algebras and free nonunitary (modified) Rota-Baxter algebras, in terms of the method of Gröbner-Shirshov bases.
Universal enveloping Lie Rota-Baxter algebras of pre-Lie and post-Lie algebras are constructed. It is proved that the pairs of varieties (Lie Rota-Baxter algebras of zero weight, preLie algebras) and (Lie Rota-Baxter algebras of nonzero weight,post-Lie algebras) are PBW-pairs and the variety of Lie Rota-Baxter algebras is not Schreier.
Recent advances in stochastic PDEs, Hopf algebras of typed trees and integral equations have inspired the study of algebraic structures with replicating operations. To understand their algebraic and combinatorial nature, we first use rooted forests with multiple decoration sets to construct free Hopf algebras with multiple Hochschild 1-cocycle conditions. Applying the universal property of the underlying operated algebras and the method of Gröbner-Shirshov bases, we then construct free objects in the category of matching Rota-Baxter algebras which is a generalization of Rota-Baxter algebras to…
A relative Rota-Baxter algebra is a generalization of a Rota-Baxter algebra. Relative Rota-Baxter algebras are closely related to dendriform algebras. In this paper, we introduce bimodules over a relative Rota-Baxter algebra that fits with the representations of dendriform algebras. We define the cohomology of a relative Rota-Baxter algebra with coefficients in a bimodule and then study abelian extensions of relative Rota-Baxter algebras in terms of the second cohomology group. Finally, we consider homotopy relative Rota-Baxter algebras and classify skeletal homotopy relative Rota-Baxter algeb…
The concept of Rota-Baxter family algebra is a generalization of Rota-Baxter algebra. It appears naturally in the algebraic aspects of renormalizations in quantum field theory. Rota-Baxter family algebras are closely related to dendriform family algebras. In this paper, we first construct an $L_\infty$-algebra whose Maurer-Cartan elements correspond to Rota-Baxter family algebra structures. Using this characterization, we define the cohomology of a given Rota-Baxter family algebra. As an application of our cohomology, we study formal and infinitesimal deformations of a given Rota-Baxter family…
Universal enveloping Rota-Baxter algebras of preassociative and postassociative algebras are constructed. The question of Li Guo is answered: the pair of varieties (Rota-Baxter algebras of nonzero weight, postassociative algebras) is a PBW-pair and the pair (Rota-Baxter algebras of zero weight, preassociative algebras) is not.
This paper introduces the notion of Rota-Baxter $C^{\ast}$-algebras. Here a Rota-Baxter $C^{\ast}$-algebra is a $C^{\ast}$-algebra with a Rota-Baxter operator. Symmetric Rota-Baxter operators, as special cases of Rota-Baxter operators on $C^{\ast}$-algebra, are defined and studied. A theorem of Rota-Baxter operators on concrete $C^{\ast}$-algebras is given, deriving the relationship between two kinds of Rota-Baxter algebras. As a corollary, some connection between $\ast$-representations and Rota-Baxter operators is given. The notion of representations of Rota-Baxter $C^{\ast}$-algebras are con…
In this paper, we define representations and cohomology of weighted Rota-Baxter Lie algebras. As applications of cohomology, we study abelian extensions and formal $1$-parameter deformations weighted Rota-Baxter Lie algebras. Finally, we consider weighted Rota-Baxter paired operators that induces a weighted Rota-Baxter Lie algebra and a representation of it. We define suitable cohomology for such paired operators that govern deformation.
Rota-Baxter operators and bialgebras go hand in hand in their applications, such as in the Connes-Kreimer approach to renormalization and the operator approach to the classical Yang-Baxter equation. We establish a bialgebra structure that is compatible with the Rota-Baxter operator, called the Rota-Baxter antisymmetric infinitesimal (ASI) bialgebra. This bialgebra is characterized by generalizations of matched pairs of algebras and double constructions of Frobenius algebras to the context of Rota-Baxter algebras. The study of the coboundary case leads to an enrichment of the associative Yang-B…
The notion of a modified Rota-Baxter algebra comes from the combination of those of a Rota-Baxter algebra and a modified Yang-Baxter equation. In this paper, we first construct free modified Rota-Baxter algebras. We then equip a free modified Rota-Baxter algebra with a bialgebra structure by a cocycle construction. Under the assumption that the generating algebra is a connected bialgebra, we further equip the free modified Rota-Baxter algebra with a Hopf algebra structure.
Gian-Carlo Rota suggested in one of his last articles the problem of developing a theory around the notion of integration algebras, complementary to the already existing theory of differential algebras. This idea was mainly motivated by Rota's deep appreciation for Kuo-Tsai Chen's seminal work on iterated integrals. As a starting point for such a theory of integration algebras Rota proposed to consider a particular operator identity first introduced by the mathematician Glen Baxter. Later it was coined Rota-Baxter identity. In this article we briefly recall basic properties of Rota--Baxter alg…
A modified Rota-Baxter algebra is an algebra equipped with an operator that satisfies the modified Yang-Baxter equation. In this paper, we define the cohomology of a modified Rota-Baxter algebra with coefficients in a suitable bimodule. We relate our cohomology of a modified Rota-Baxter algebra with the known cohomology theory of a Rota-Baxter algebra. As applications of our cohomology, we study formal one-parameter deformations and abelian extensions of modified Rota-Baxter algebras.
We introduce a generalization of parametrized Rota-Baxter algebras, which includes family and matching Rota-Baxter algebras. We study the structure needed on the set $Ω$ of parameters in order to obtain that free Rota-Baxter algebras are described in terms of typed and angularly decorated planar rooted trees: we obtain the notion of $λ$-extended diassociative semigroup, which includes sets (for matching Rota-Baxter algebras) and semigroups (for family Rota-Baxter algebras), and many other examples. We also describe free commutative $Ω$-Rota-Baxter algebras generated by a commutative algebra A …
In this paper, we obtain a canonical factorization of basis elements in free Rota-Baxter algebras built on bracketed words. This canonical factorization is applied to give a coalgebra structure on the free Rota-Baxter algebras. Together with the Rota-Baxter algebra multiplication, this coproduct gives a bialgebra structure on the free Rota-Baxter algebra of rooted forests. When the weight of the Rota-Baxter algebra is zero, we further obtain a Hopf algebra structure.
Let $L$ be a simple anti-commutative algebra. In this paper we prove that a non skew-symmetric solution of the classical Yang-Baxter equation on $L$ with $L$-invariant symmetric part induces on $L$ a Rota-Baxter operator of a non-zero weight.
We study possible connections between Rota-Baxter operators of non-zero weight and non-skew-symmetric solutions of the classical Yang-Baxter equation on finite-dimensional quadratic Lie algebras. The particular attention is made to the case when for a solution $r$ the element $r+τ(r)$ is $L$-invariant.
We apply recent constructions of free Baxter algebras to the study of the umbral calculus. We give a characterization of the umbral calculus in terms of Baxter algebra. This characterization leads to a natural generalization of the umbral calculus that include the classical umbral calculus in a family of $λ$-umbral calculi parameterized by $λ$ in the base ring.
Universal enveloping commutative Rota-Baxter algebras of pre- and postcommutative algebras are constructed. We prove that the pair of varieties (commutative Rota-Baxter algebras of nonzero weight, postcommutative algebras) is a PBW-pair and the pair (commutative Rota-Baxter algebras of zero weight, precommutative algebras) is not.
In this paper, we establish the Composition-Diamond lemma for associative nonunitary Rota-Baxter algebras with weight $λ$. As applications, we obtain a linear basis of a free commutative Rota-Baxter algebra without unity and show that every countably generated Rota-Baxter algebra with weight 0 can be embedded into a two-generated Rota-Baxter algebra.
The notion of matching Rota-Baxter algebras was recently introduced by Gao, Guo and Zhang [{\em J. Algebra} 552 (2020) 134-170] motivated by the study of algebraic renormalization of regularity structures. The concept of matching Rota-Baxter algebras generalizes multiple integral operators with kernels. The same authors also introduced matching dendriform algebras as the underlying structure of matching Rota-Baxter algebras. In this paper, we introduce matching relative Rota-Baxter algebras that are also related to matching dendriform algebras. We define a matching associative Yang-Baxter equa…
Groups with various types of operators, in particular the recently introduced Rota-Baxter groups, have generated renowned interest with close connections to numerical integrals, Yang-Baxter equation, integrable systems and post-Hopf algebras. This paper gives the general notion of operated groups and provides explicit constructions of free operated groups, free differential groups and free Rota-Baxter groups.
We generalize the notion of a Rota-Baxter operator on groups and the notion of a Rota-Baxter operator of weight 1 on Lie algebras and define and study the notion of a Rota-Baxter operator on a cocommutative Hopf algebra $H$. If $H=F[G]$ is the group algebra of a group $G$ or $H=U(\mathfrak{g})$ the universal enveloping algebra of a Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$, then we prove that Rota-Baxter operators on $H$ are in one to one correspondence with corresponding Rota-Baxter operators on groups or Lie algebras.
The goal of the present paper is to investigate representations and cohomologies of Rota-Baxter 3-Lie algebras with any weight. We introduce representations, matched pairs and Manin triples of Rota-Baxter 3-Lie algebras. Furthermore, we discuss cohomology theory of Rota-Baxter 3-Lie algebras. The deformations and central extensions of Rota-Baxter 3-Lie algebras are also studied.
This paper studies formal deformations and homotopy theory of Rota-Baxter algebras of any weight. We define an $L_\infty$-algebra, which controls simultaneous deformations of associative products and Rota-Baxter operators. As a consequence, we develop a cohomology theory of Rota-Baxter algebras of any weight and justify it by interpreting lower degree cohomology groups as formal deformations and abelian extensions. The notion of homotopy Rota-Baxter algebras is introduced and it is shown that the operad governing homotopy Rota-Baxter algebras is a minimal model of the operad of Rota-Baxter alg…
In this paper, we introduce twisted relative Rota-Baxter operators on a Leibniz algebra as a generalization of twisted Poisson structures. We define the cohomology of a twisted relative Rota-Baxter operator $K$ as the Loday-Pirashvili cohomology of a certain Leibniz algebra induced by $K$ with coefficients in a suitable representation. Then we consider formal deformations of twisted relative Rota-Baxter operators from cohomological points of view. Finally, we introduce and study NS-Leibniz algebras as the underlying structure of twisted relative Rota-Baxter operators.
We consider a complete filtered Rota-Baxter algebra of weight $λ$ over a commutative ring. Finding the unique solution of a non-homogeneous linear algebraic equation in this algebra, we generalize Spitzer's identity in both commutative and non-commutative cases. As an application, considering the Rota-Baxter algebra of power series in one variable with q-integral as the Rota-Baxter operator, we show certain Eulerian identities.
For any algebra two families of coloured Yang-Baxter operators are constructed, thus producing solutions to the two-parameter quantum Yang-Baxter equation. An open problem about a system of functional equations is stated. The matrix forms of these operators for two and three dimensional algebras are computed. A FRT bialgebra for one of these families is presented. Solutions for the one-parameter quantum Yang-Baxter equation are derived and a Yang-Baxter system constructed.
In this paper, we introduce the Hom-algebra setting of the notions of matching Rota-Baxter algebras, matching (tri)dendriform algebras and matching (pre)Lie algebras. Moreover, we study the properties and relationships between categories of these matching Hom-algebraic structures.
In this paper, we propose the concept of an $Ω$-Rota-Baxter system, which is a generalization of a Rota-Baxter system and an $Ω$-Rota-Baxter algebra of weight zero. In the framework of operated algebras, we obtain a linear basis of a free $Ω$-Rota-Baxter system for an extended diassociative semigroup $Ω$, in terms of bracketed words and the method of Gröbner-Shirshov bases. As applications, we introduce the concepts of Rota-Baxter system family algebras and matching Rota-Baxter systems as special cases of $Ω$-Rota-Baxter systems, and construct their free objects. Meanwhile, free $Ω$-Rota-Baxte…
We prove that all Rota-Baxter operators on a quadratic division algebra are trivial. For nonzero weight, we state that all Rota-Baxter operators on the simple odd-dimensional Jordan algebra of bilinear form are projections on a subalgebra along another one. For weight zero, we find a connection between the Rota-Baxter operators and the solutions to the alternative Yang-Baxter equation on the Cayley-Dickson algebra. We also investigate the Rota-Baxter operators on the matrix algebras of order two, the Grassmann algebra of plane, and the Kaplansky superalgebra.
In this paper, we first construct a graded Lie algebra which characterizes Rota-Baxter operators on an anti-flexible algebra as Maurer-Cartan elements. Next, we study infinitesimal deformations of bimodules over anti-flexible algebras. We also consider compatible Rota-Baxter operators on bimodules over anti-flexible algebras. Finally, We define $\mathcal{ON}$-structures which give rise to compatible Rota-Baxter operators and vice-versa.
A Rota-Baxter algebra $A_R$ is an algebra $A$ equipped with a distinguished Rota-Baxter operator $R$ on it. Rota-Baxter algebras are closely related to dendriform algebras introduced by Loday. In this paper, we first consider the non-abelian extension theory of Rota-Baxter algebras and classify them by introducing the non-abelian cohomology. Next, given a non-abelian extension $0 \rightarrow B_S \rightarrow E_U \rightarrow A_R \rightarrow 0$ of Rota-Baxter algebras, we construct the Wells type exact sequences and find their role in extending a Rota-Baxter automorphism $β\in \mathrm{Aut}(B_S)$ …
We give a broad study of representation and module theory of Rota-Baxter algebras. Regular-singular decompositions of Rota-Baxter algebras and Rota-Baxter modules are obtained under the condition of quasi-idempotency. Representations of an Rota-Baxter algebra are shown to be equivalent to the representations of the ring of Rota-Baxter operators whose categorical properties are obtained and explicit constructions are provided. Representations from coalgebras are investigated and their algebraic Birkhoff factorization is given. Representations of Rota-Baxter algebras in the tensor category conte…
