We answer Hubbard's question on determining the Thurston equivalence class of ``twisted rabbits'', i.e. images of the ``rabbit'' polynomial under n-th powers of the Dehn twists about its ears.
The answer is expressed in terms of the 4-adic expansion of n. We also answer the equivalent question for the other two families of degree-2 topological polynomials with three post-critical points.
In the process, we rephrase the questions in group-theoretical language, in terms of wreath recursions.
In this paper, we develop a way to extract information about a random walk associated with a typical Thurston's construction. We first observe that a typical Thurston's construction entails a free group of rank 2. We also present a proof of the spectral theorem for random walks associated with Thurston's construction that have finite second moment with respect to the Teichmüller metric. Its general case was remarked by Dahmani and Horbez. Finally, under a hypothesis not involving moment conditions, we prove that random walks eventually become pseudo-Anosov. As an application, we first discuss …
The core entropy of polynomials, recently introduced by W. Thurston, is a dy-namical invariant extending topological entropy for real maps to complex polynomials, whence providing a new tool to study the parameter space of polynomials. The base is a combinatorial algorithm allowing for the computation of the core entropy given by Thurston, but without supplying a proof. In this paper, we will describe his algorithm and prove its validity.
For a post-critically finite branched covering of the sphere that is a subdivision map of a finite subdivision rule, we define non-expanding spines which determine the existence of a Levy cycle in a non-exhaustive semi-decidable algorithm. Especially when a finite subdivision rule has polynomial growth of edge subdivisions, the algorithm terminates very quickly, and the existence of a Levy cycle is equivalent to the existence of a Thurston obstruction. In order to show the equivalence between Levy and Thurston obstructions, we generalize the arcs intersecting obstruction theorem by Pilgrim and…
Topological mating is an combination that takes two same-degree polynomials and produces a new map with dynamics inherited from this initial pair. This process frequently yields a map that is Thurston-equivalent to a rational map $F$ on the Riemann sphere. Given a pair of polynomials of the form $z^2+c$ that are postcritically finite, there is a fast test on the constant parameters to determine whether this map $F$ exists---but this test is not constructive. We present an iterative method that utilizes finite subdivision rules and Thurston's algorithm to approximate this rational map, $F$. Thi…
We study Thurston equivalence classes of quadratic post-critically finite branched coverings. For these maps, we introduce and study invariant spanning trees. We give a computational procedure for searching for invariant spanning trees. This procedure uses bisets over the fundamental group of a punctured sphere. We also introduce a new combinatorial invariant of Thurston classes - the ivy graph.
We completely elucidate the relationship between two invariants associated with an ergodic probability measure-preserving (pmp) equivalence relation, namely its cost and the minimal number of topological generators of its full group. It follows that for any free pmp ergodic action of the free group on $n$ generators, the minimal number of topological generators for the full group of the action is $n+1$, answering a question of Kechris.
The notion of topological equivalence plays an essential role in the study of dynamical systems of flows. However, it is inherently difficult to generalize this concept to systems without well-posedness in the sense of Hadamard. In this study, we formulate a notion of "topological equivalence" between such systems based on the axiomatic theory of topological dynamics proposed by Yorke, and discuss its relation with the usual definition. During this process, we generalize Yorke's theory to the action of topological groups.
Homeomorphisms allowing us to prove topological equivalences between one-parameter families of maps undergoing the same bifurcation are constructed in this paper. This provides a solution for a classical problem in bifurcation theory that was set out three decades ago and remained unexpectedly unpublished until now
A $D_{\infty}$-topological Markov chain can be represented by a pair of zero-one square matrices, which is called a flip pair. We introduce the concepts of $D_{\infty}$-strong shift equivalence and $D_{\infty}$-shift equivalence, which are equivalence relations between flip pairs. We investigate the relationships between the existence of a $D_{\infty}$-conjugacy, the existence of a $D_{\infty}$-strong shift equivalence, the existence of a $D_{\infty}$-shift equivalence and the coincidence of the Lind zeta functions.
We study discrete flow equivalence of two-sided topological Markov shifts by using extended Ruelle algebras. We characterize flow equivalence of two-sided topological Markov shifts in terms of conjugacy of certain actions weighted by ceiling functions of two-dimensional torus on the stabilized extended Ruelle algebras for the Markov shifts.
We give an elementary proof that there are two topological generators for the full group of every aperiodic hyperfinite probability measure preserving Borel equivalence relation. Our proof explicitly constructs topological generators for the orbit equivalence relation of the irrational rotation of the circle, and then appeals to Dye's theorem and a Baire category argument to conclude the general case.
We introduce a notion of coded equivalence in one-sided topological Markov shifts. The notion is inspired by coding theory. One-sided topological conjugacy implies coded equivalence. We will show that coded equivalence implies continuous orbit equivalence of one-sided topological Markov shifts.
We will study several subgroups of continuous full groups of one-sided topological Markov shifts from the view points of cohomology groups of full group actions on the shift spaces. We also study continuous orbit equivalence and strongly continuous orbit equivalence in terms of these subgroups of the continuous full groups and the cohomology groups.
A linear system of difference equations and a nonlinear perturbation are considered. We propose sufficient conditions to ensure that the homeomorphism of topological equivalence between them is actually a $C^1$ diffeomorphism. These conditions consider that the linear part satisfies a dichotomy on the positive half-line, while the perturbation satisfies boundness and Lipschitzness conditions, and anothers that are tailored for our goal. The family of dichotomies that we study consider (but are not limited to) the exponential and nonuniform exponential dichotomies. We discuss the possibility of…
We study KMS states for gauge actions with potential functions on Cuntz--Krieger algebras whose underlying one-sided topological Markov shifts are continuous orbit equivalent. As a result, we have a certain relationship between topological entropy of continuous orbit equivalent one-sided topological Markov shifts.
We study the smoothness and preserving orientation properties of a global and nonautonomous version of the Hartman--Grobman Theorem when the linear system has a nonuniform contraction on the half line. The nonuniform contraction implies the existence of a density function (\emph{i.e} a dual type of Lyapunov function) for the linear system which combined with the above diffeomorphism allow us to construct a density function for the nonlinear system.
In this short note we observe that within the family of slowly recurrent rational maps on the Riemann sphere, the Collet-Eckmann, second Collet-Eckmann, and topological Collet-Eckmann conditions are equivalent and also invariant under topological conjugacy.
We will study torus actions on Cuntz--Krieger algebras trivially acting on its canonical maximal abelian $C^*$-subalgebras from the view points of continuous orbit equivalence of one-sided topological Markov shifts and flow equivalence of two-sided topological Markov shifts.
This paper concerns the local study of analytic constrained differential systems (or impasse systems) of the form $A(x)\dot{x} = F(x)$, $x\in\mathbb{R}^{2}$, where $F$ is a vector field and $A$ is a matrix valued function. Using techniques of resolution of singularities with weighted blow ups, we extend well-known results in the literature on topological classification of phase portraits of planar vector fields to the context of such class of systems. We also study and classify phase portraits of constrained systems near singular points of the so called impasse set $Δ=\{x:\det A (x) = 0\}$.
We give a simple algorithm that determines whether a given post-critically finite topological polynomial is Thurston equivalent to a polynomial. If it is, the algorithm produces the Hubbard tree; otherwise, the algorithm produces the canonical obstruction. Our approach is rooted in geometric group theory, using iteration on a simplicial complex of trees, and building on work of Nekrashevych. As one application of our methods, we resolve the polynomial case of Pilgrim's finite global attractor conjecture. We also give a new solution to Hubbard's twisted rabbit problem, and we state and solve se…
In this paper, we will introduce notions of relative version of imprimitivity bimodules and relative version of strong Morita equivalence for pairs of $C^*$-algebras $(\mathcal{A}, \mathcal{D})$ such that $\mathcal{D}$ is a $C^*$-subalgebra of $\mathcal{A}$ with certain conditions. We will then prove that two pairs $(\mathcal{A}_1, \mathcal{D}_1)$ and $(\mathcal{A}_2, \mathcal{D}_2)$ are relatively Morita equivalent if and only if their relative stabilizations are isomorphic. In particularly, for two pairs $(\mathcal{O}_A, \mathcal{D}_A)$ and $(\mathcal{O}_B, \mathcal{D}_B)$ of Cuntz--Krieger …
