Let k be a number field, let E/k be an elliptic curve, and let S be a finite set of places of k contianing the archimedean places. Let F be an algebraic closure of k. We prove that if a point P in E(F) is nontorsion, then there are only finitely many torsion points x in E(F) which are S-integral with respect to P. We also prove an analogue of this for the multiplicative group, and formulate conjectural generalizations for abelian varieties and dynamical systems.
Let $C/\mathbb{F}_q$ be a regular projective curve, $\infty \in C$ a closed point, $A := Γ(C - \{\infty\}, \mathcal{O}_C)$, and $K := K(C)$ the fraction field of $A$. Consider a finite extension $L/K$, a place $v$ of $L$, and an abelian $A$-module $M$ (in the sense of Anderson) over $L_v$. We prove that the $L_v$-rational torsion submodule $M(L_v)_{\mathrm{tors}}$ of $M$ is a finite $A$-module.
Let $A$ be an abelian variety over a $p$-adic field $K$ and $L$ an algebraic infinite extension over $K$. We consider the finiteness of the torsion part of the group of rational points $A(L)$ under some assumptions. In 1975, Hideo Imai proved that such a group is finite if $A$ has good reduction and $L$ is the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of $K$. In this talk, first we show a generalization of Imai's result in the case where $A$ has ordinary good reduction. Next we give some finiteness results when $A$ is an elliptic curve and $L$ is the field generated by the $p$-power torsion of an el…
The finiteness property is an important arithmetical property of beta-expansions. We exhibit classes of Pisot numbers $β$ having the negative finiteness property, that is the set of finite $(-β)$-expansions is equal to $\mathbb{Z}[β^{-1}]$. For a class of numbers including the Tribonacci number, we compute the maximal length of the fractional parts arising in the addition and subtraction of $(-β)$-integers. We also give conditions excluding the negative finiteness property.
We present some topological and arithmetical aspects of a class of Rauzy fractals $\mathcal{R}_{a,b}$ related to the polynomials of the form $P_{a,b}(x)=x^{3}-ax^{2}-bx-1$, where $a$ and $b$ are integers satisfying $-a+1 \leq b \leq -2$. This class has the property that $0$ lies on the boundary of $\mathcal{R}_{a,b}$. We construct explicit finite automata that recognize the boundaries of these fractals, which allows to establish the number of neighbors of $\mathcal{R}_{a,b}$. In particular, we prove that if $2a+3b+4 \leq 0$ then $\mathcal{R}_{a,b}$ is not homeomorphic to a topological disk. We…
In this paper, we study a conjecture of Rasmussen and Tamagawa, on the finiteness of the set of isomorphism classes of abelian varieties with constrained prime power torsion. Our result is related with abelian varieties which have complex multiplication over their fields of definition.
In this note, we propose the modular height of an abelian variety defined over a field of finite type over Q. Moreover, we prove its finiteness property.
Let $k$ be a number field with algebraic closure $\bar{k}$, and let $S$ be a finite set of places of $k$ containing all the archimedean ones. Fix $d\geq 2$ and $α\in \bar{k}$ such that the map $z\mapsto z^d+α$ is not postcritically finite. Assuming a technical hypothesis on $α$, we prove that there are only finitely many parameters $c\in\bar{k}$ for which $z\mapsto z^d+c$ is postcritically finite and for which $c$ is $S$-integral relative to $(α)$. That is, in the moduli space of unicritical polynomials of degree d, there are only finitely many PCF $\bar{k}$-rational points that are $((α),S)$-…
We prove a finiteness theorem for the first flat cohomology group of finite flat group schemes over integral normal proper varieties over finite fields. As a consequence, we can prove the invariance of the finiteness of the Tate-Shafarevich group of Abelian schemes over higher dimensional bases under isogenies and alterations over/of such bases for the $p$-part. Along the way, we generalize previous results on the Tate-Shafarevich group in this situation.
In this paper, we consider a finiteness problem of saturated subsheaves of a hermitian locally free sheaf on an arithmetic variety. As an application, we could prove the unique existence of an arithmetic Harder-Narasimham filtration.
Let K be a number field with algebraic closure K-bar, let S be a finite set of places of K containing the archimedean places, and let f be a Chebyshev polynomial. We prove that if a in K-bar is not preperiodic, then there are only finitely many preperiodic points b in K-bar which are S-integral with respect to a.
We show finiteness results on torsion points of commutative algebraic groups over a $p$-adic field $K$ with values in various algebraic extensions $L/K$ of infinite degree. We mainly study the following cases: (1) $L$ is an abelian extension which is a splitting field of a crystalline character (such as a Lubin-Tate extension). (2) $L$ is a certain iterate extension of $K$ associated with Lubin-Tate formal groups, which is familiar with Kummer theory.
In this paper, we study the finiteness problem of torsion points on an elliptic curve whose coordinates satisfy some multiplicative dependence relations. In particular, we prove that on an elliptic curve defined over a number field there are only finitely many torsion points whose coordinates are multiplicatively dependent. Moreover, we produce an effective result when the elliptic curve is defined over the rational numbers or has complex multiplication.
For a natural number d and a d-dimensional real vector r let Tau(r) denote the (d-dimensional) shift radix system associated with r. Tau(r) is said to have the finiteness property iff all orbits of Tau(r) end up in the zero vector; the set of all corresponding parameters r is denoted by DN(d), whereas D(d) consists of those parameters r for which all orbits are eventually periodic. DN(d) has a very complicated structure even for d=2. In the present paper two algorithms are presented which allow the characterization of the intersection of DN(d) and any closed convex hull of finitely many interi…
There are two-dimensional expanding shift radix systems (SRS) which have some periodic orbits. The aim of the present paper is to describe such unusual points as well as possible. We give all regions that contain parameters the corresponding SRS of which generate obvious cycles like $(1), (-1), (1,-1), (1,0), (-1,0)$. We prove that if $\mathbf{r}=(r_0,r_1)\in \mathbb{R}^2$ neither belongs to the aforementioned regions nor to the finite region $1\le r_0\le 4/3, -r_0 \le r_1 <r_0-1$, then $τ_{\mathbf{r}}$ only has the trivial bounded orbit $\mathbf{0}$, which is a natural generalization of the e…
The Tate conjecture for divisors on varieties over number fields is equivalent to finiteness of $\ell$-primary torsion in the Brauer group. We show that this finiteness is actually uniform in one-dimensional families for varieties that satisfy the Tate conjecture for divisors -- e.g. abelian varieties and $K3$ surfaces.
Let A be an abelian variety defined over a number field F. For a prime number $\ell$, we consider the field extension of F generated by the $\ell$-powered torsion points of A. According to a conjecture made by Rasmussen and Tamagawa, if we require these fields to be both a pro-$\ell$ extension of $F(μ_{\ell^{\infty}})$ and unramified away from $\ell$, examples are quite rare. Indeed, it is expected that for a fixed dimension and field of definition, there exists such an abelian variety for only a finite number of primes. We prove a uniform version of the conjecture in the case where the abelia…
For a K3 surface over a field of characteristic 2 which is finitely generated over its prime subfield, we prove that the cokernel of the natural map from the Brauer group of the base field to that of the K3 surface is finite modulo the 2-primary torsion subgroup. In characteristic different from 2, such results were previously proved by A. N. Skorobogatov and Y. G. Zarhin. We basically follow their methods with an extra care in the case of superspecial K3 surfaces using the recent results of W. Kim and K. Madapusi Pera on the Kuga-Satake construction and the Tate conjecture for K3 surfaces in …
Consider strong approximation for algebraic varieties defined over a number field $k$. Let $S$ be a finite set of places of $k$ containing all archimedean places. Let $E$ be an elliptic curve of positive Mordell-Weil rank and let $A$ be an abelian variety of positive dimension and of finite Mordell-Weil group. For an arbitrary finite set $\mathfrak{T}$ of torsion points of $E\times A$, denote by $X$ its complement. Supposing the finiteness of $Sha(E\times A)$, we prove that $X$ satisfies strong approximation with Brauer-Manin obstruction off $S$ if and only if the projection of $\mathfrak{T}$ …
The Birch and Swinnerton--Dyer conjecture famously predicts that the rank of an elliptic curve can be computed from its $L$-function. In this article we consider a weaker version of this conjecture called the parity conjecture and prove the following. Let $E_1$ and $E_2$ be two elliptic curves defined over a number field $K$ whose 2-torsion groups are isomorphic as Galois modules. Assuming finiteness of the Shafarevich-Tate groups of $E_1$ and $E_2$, we show that the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture correctly predicts the parity of the rank of $E_1\times E_2$. Using this result, we complet…
Let $K$ be a number field. We present several new finiteness results for isomorphism classes of abelian varieties over $K$ whose $\ell$-power torsion fields are arithmetically constrained for some rational prime $\ell$. Such arithmetic constraints are related to an unresolved question of Ihara regarding the kernel of the canonical outer Galois representation on the pro-$\ell$ fundamental group of $P^1 - \{0,1,\infty\}$. Under GRH, we demonstrate the set of classes is finite for any fixed $K$ and any fixed dimension. Without GRH, we prove a semistable version of the result. In addition, several…

We study the behavior of the greatest common divisor of a^k-1 and b^k-1, where a,b are fixed integers or polynomials, and k varies. In the integer case, we conjecture that when a and b are multiplicatively independent and in addition a-1 and b-1 are coprime, then a^k-1 and b^k-1 are coprime infinitely often. In the polynomial case, we prove a strong version of this conjecture. To do this we use a result of Lang's on the finiteness of torsion points on algebraic curves. We also give a matrix analogue of these results, where for a unimodular matrix A, we look at the greatest common divisor of th…
We shall consider sections of an elliptic scheme $\mathcal{E}$ over a(n affine) base curve $B$, and study the points of $B$ where the section takes a torsion value. In particular, we shall relate the distribution in $B$ of these points with the canonical height of the section, proving an integral formula involving a measure on $B$ coming from the so-called Betti map of the section. We shall show that this measure is the same appearing in dynamical issues related to the section. This analysis will also involve the multiplicity with which a torsion value is attained, which is an independent prob…
In this paper, we prove the non-existence of certain semistable Galois representations of a number field. Our consequence can be applied to some geometric problems. For example, we prove a special case of a Conjecture of Rasmussen and Tamagawa, related with the finiteness of the set of isomorphism classes of abelian varieties with constrained prime power torsion.
Let $p$ be a prime and $K$ a number field of degree $p$. We count the number of elliptic curves, up to $\bar{K}$-isomorphism, having a prescribed property, where this property is either that the curve contains a fixed torsion group as a subgroup, or that it has an isogeny of prescribed degree.
I prove the surjectivity of the $p$-adic regulator from Quillen's $K_2$ of Tate curve to the $p$-adic etale cohomology group when the base field is contained in a cyclotomic extension of $Q_p$. This implies the finiteness of torsion part of $K_1$ of Tate curves thanks to Suslin's exact sequence.
Let $\mathcal{O}$ be an order, that is a commutative ring with $1$ whose additive structure is a free $\mathbb{Z}$-module of finite rank. A generalized number system (GNS for short) over $\mathcal{O}$ is a pair $(p,\mathcal{D} )$ where $p\in\mathcal{O}[x]$ is monic with constant term $p(0)$ not a zero divisor of $\mathcal{O}$, and where $\mathcal{D}$ is a complete residue system modulo $p(0)$ in $\mathcal{O}$ containing $0$. We say that $(p,\mathcal{D})$ is a GNS over $\mathcal{O}$ with the finiteness property if all elements of $\mathcal{O}[x]/(p)$ have a representative in $\mathcal{D}[x]$ (t…
Let $A$ be an $n \times n$ matrix with rational entries and let \[ \mathbb{Z}^n[A] := \bigcup_{k=1}^{\infty} \left( \mathbb{Z}^n + A\mathbb{Z}^n + \dots + A^{k-1}\mathbb{Z}^n\right) \] be the minimal $A$-invariant $\mathbb{Z}$-module containing the lattice $\mathbb{Z}^n$. If $\mathcal{D}\subset\mathbb{Z}^n[A]$ is a finite set we call the pair $(A,\mathcal{D})$ a digit system. We say that $(A,\mathcal{D})$ has the finiteness property if each $\mathbf{z} \in \mathbb{Z}^n[A]$ can be written in the form \[ \mathbf{z} = \mathbf{d}_0 + A\mathbf{d}_1 + \dots + A^k\mathbf{d}_k, \] with $k\in\mathbb{N}…
We prove that the moduli space of compact genus three Riemann surfaces contains only finitely many algebraically primitive Teichmueller curves. For the stratum consisting of holomorphic one-forms in genus three with a single zero, our approach to finiteness uses the Harder-Narasimhan filtration of the Hodge bundle over a Teichmueller curve to obtain new information on the locations of the zeros of eigenforms. By passing to the boundary of moduli space, this gives explicit constraints on the cusps of Teichmueller curves in terms of cross-ratios of six points on a projective line. These constrai…
