In this paper, we consider a family of twists of a superelliptic curve over a global field, and obtain results on the distribution of the Mordell-Weil rank of these twists. Our results have applications to the distribution of the number of rational points.
We study the variation of Selmer ranks of Jacobians of twists of hyperelliptic curves and superelliptic curves. We find sufficient conditions for such curves to have infinitely many twists whose Jacobians have Selmer ranks equal to $r$, for any given nonnegative integer $r$. This generalizes earlier results of Mazur-Rubin on elliptic curves.
Conditionally on the $abc$ conjecture, we generalize previous work of Clark and the author to show that a superelliptic curve $C: y^n = f(x)$ of sufficiently high genus has infinitely many twists violating the Hasse Principle if and only if $f(x)$ has no $\mathbb Q$-rational roots. We also show unconditionally that a curve defined by $C: y^{pN}=f(x)$ has infinitely many twists violating the Hasse Principle over any number field $k$ such that $k$ contains the $p$th roots of unity and $f(x)$ has no $k$-rational roots.
Let $n\geq 2$ be an integer, $F$ a number field, $O_F$ the integral closure of $\mathbb{Z}$ in $F$ and $N$ a positive multiple of $n$. The paper deals with degree $N$ polynomials $P(T) \in O_F[T]$ such that the superelliptic curve $Y^n=P(T)$ has twists $Y^n=d\cdot P(T)$ without $F$-rational points. We show that this condition holds if the Galois group of $P(T)$ over $F$ has an element which fixes no root of $P(T)$. Two applications are given. Firstly, we prove that the proportion of degree $N$ polynomials $P(T) \in O_F[T]$ with height bounded by $H$ and such that the associated curve satisfies…
Let $p$ be a prime, let $r$ and $q$ be powers of $p$, and let $a$ and $b$ be relatively prime integers not divisible by $p$. Let $C/\mathbb F_{r}(t)$ be the superelliptic curve with affine equation $y^b+x^a=t^q-t$. Let $J$ be the Jacobian of $C$. By work of Pries--Ulmer, $J$ satisfies the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture (BSD). Generalizing work of Griffon--Ulmer, we compute the $L$-function of $J$ in terms of certain Gauss sums. In addition, we estimate several arithmetic invariants of $J$ appearing in BSD, including the rank of the Mordell--Weil group $J(\mathbb F_{r}(t))$, the Faltings …
In this paper, we study twisted arithmetic divisors on the modular curve X_0(N) with N square-free. For each pair (Δ, r) where Δ>0 and Δ\equiv r^2 \mod 4N, we constructed a twisted arithmetic theta function ϕ_{Δ, r}(τ) which is a generating function of arithmetic twisted Heegner divisors. We prove the modularity of ϕ_{Δ, r}(τ), along the way, we also identify the arithmetic pairing \langle ϕ_{Δ, r}(τ),\widehatω_N \rangle with special value of some Eisenstein series, where \widehatω_N is a normalized metric Hodge line bundle.
We consider some variations on the classical method of Runge for effectively determining integral points on certain curves. We first prove a version of Runge's theorem valid for higher-dimensional varieties, generalizing a uniform version of Runge's theorem due to Bombieri. We then take up the study of how Runge's method may be expanded by taking advantage of certain coverings. We prove both a result for arbitrary curves and a more explicit result for superelliptic curves. As an application of our method, we solve certain equations involving squares in products of terms in an arithmetic progre…
We study arithmetic intersections on twisted (quaternionic) Hilbert modular surfaces and Shimura curves over a real quadratic field. Our first main result is the determination of the degree of the top arithmetic Todd class of an arithmetic twisted Hilbert modular surface. This quantity is then related to the arithmetic volume of a Shimura curve, via the arithmetic Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch theorem and the Jacquet-Langlands correspondence.
Let $\mathbb{F}_r$ be a finite field of characteristic $p>3$. For any power $q$ of $p$, consider the elliptic curve $E=E_{q,r}$ defined by $y^2=x^3 + t^q -t$ over $K=\mathbb{F}_r(t)$. We describe several arithmetic invariants of $E$ such as the rank of its Mordell--Weil group $E(K)$, the size of its Néron--Tate regulator $\text{Reg}(E)$, and the order of its Tate--Shafarevich group $III(E)$ (which we prove is finite). These invariants have radically different behaviors depending on the congruence class of $p$ modulo 6. For instance $III(E)$ either has trivial $p$-part or is a $p$-group. On the…
This is an investigation into the possible existence and consequences of a Birch-Swinnerton-Dyer-type formula for L-functions of elliptic curves twisted by Artin representations. We translate expected properties of L-functions into purely arithmetic predictions for elliptic curves, and show that these force some peculiar properties of the Tate-Shafarevich group, which do not appear to be tractable by traditional Selmer group techniques. In particular we exhibit settings where the different p-primary components of the Tate-Shafarevich group do not behave independently of one another. We also gi…
We study the arithmetic of the twist of the Fermat quartic defined by $X^4 + Y^4 + Z^4 = 0$ which has no $\mathbb{Q}$-rational point. We calculate the Mordell--Weil group of the Jacobian variety explicilty. We show that the degree $0$ part of the Picard group is a free $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$-module of rank $2$, whereas the Mordell--Weil group is a free $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$-module of rank $3$. Thus the relative Brauer group is non-trivial. We also show that this quartic violates the local-global property for linear determinantal representations.
We prove upper bounds for the error term of the distribution of squarefree numbers up to $X$ in arithmetic progressions modulo $q$ making progress towards two well-known conjectures concerning this distribution and improving upon earlier results by Hooley. We make use of recent estimates for short exponential sums by Bourgain-Garaev and for exponential sums twisted by the Möbius function by Bourgain and Fouvry-Kowalski-Michel.
We study the problem of the existence of arithmetic progressions of three cubes over quadratic number fields Q(sqrt(D)), where D is a squarefree integer. For this purpose, we give a characterization in terms of Q(sqrt(D))-rational points on the elliptic curve E:y^2=x^3-27. We compute the torsion subgroup of the Mordell-Weil group of this elliptic curve over Q(sqrt(D)) and we give partial answers to the finiteness of the free part of E(Q(sqrt(D))). This last task will be translated to compute if the rank of the quadratic D-twist of the modular curve X_0(36) is zero or not.
It is well known that, for any finitely generated torsion module M over the Iwasawa algebra Z_p [[Γ ]], where Γ is isomorphic to Z_p, there exists a continuous p-adic character ρ of Γ such that, for every open subgroup U of Γ, the group of U-coinvariants M(ρ)_U is finite; here M( ρ) denotes the twist of M by ρ. This twisting lemma was already applied to study various arithmetic properties of Selmer groups and Galois cohomologies over a cyclotomic tower by Greenberg and Perrin-Riou. We prove a non commutative generalization of this twisting lemma replacing torsion modules over Z_p [[ Γ ]] by ce…
Let $f\in\Q[x]$ be a square-free polynomial of degree $\geq 3$ and $m\geq 3$ be an odd positive integer. Based on our earlier investigations we prove that there exists a function $D_{1}\in\Q(u,v,w)$ such that the Jacobians of the curves \begin{equation*} C_{1}:\;D_{1}y^2=f(x),\quad C_{2}:\;y^2=D_{1}x^m+b,\quad C_{3}:\;y^2=D_{1}x^m+c, \end{equation*} have all positive ranks over $\Q(u,v,w)$. Similarly, we prove that there exists a function $D_{2}\in\Q(u,v,w)$ such that the Jacobians of the curves \begin{equation*} C_{1}:\;D_{2}y^2=h(x),\quad C_{2}:\;y^2=D_{2}x^m+b,\quad C_{3}:\;y^2=x^m+cD_{2}, …
We show how the size of the Galois groups of iterates of a quadratic polynomial $f(x)$ can be parametrized by certain rational points on the curves $C_n:y^2=f^n(x)$ and their quadratic twists. To that end, we study the arithmetic of such curves over global and finite fields, translating key problems in the arithmetic of polynomial iteration into a geometric framework. This point of view has several dynamical applications. For instance, we establish a maximality theorem for the Galois groups of the fourth iterate of quadratic polynomials $x^2+c$, using techniques in the theory of rational point…

Let $E$ be a $\mathbb Q$-curve without complex multiplication. We address the problem of deciding whether $E$ is geometrically isomorphic to a strongly modular $\mathbb Q$-curve. We show that the question has a positive answer if and only if $E$ has a model that is completely defined over an abelian number field. Next, if $E$ is completely defined over a quadratic or biquadratic number field $L$, we classify all strongly modular twists of $E$ over $L$ in terms of the arithmetic of $L$. Moreover, we show how to determine which of these twists come, up to isogeny, from a subfield of $L$.
We study the geometry and arithmetic of so-called primary Burniat surfaces, a family of surfaces of general type arising as smooth bidouble covers of a del Pezzo surface of degree 6 and at the same time as étale quotients of certain hypersurfaces in a product of three elliptic curves. We give a new explicit description of their moduli space and determine their possible automorphism groups. We also give an explicit description of the set of curves of geometric genus 1 on each primary Burniat surface. We then describe how one can try to obtain a description of the set of rational points on a giv…
In this paper we consider the cohomology of a closed arithmetic hyperbolic 3-manifold with coefficients in the local system defined by the even symmetric powers of the standard representation of SL(2,C). The cohomology is defined over the integers and is a finite abelian group. We show that the order of the 2nd cohomology grows exponentially as the local system grows. We also consider the twisted Ruelle zeta function of a closed arithmetic hyperbolic 3-manifold and we express the leading coefficient of its Laurent expansion at the origin in terms of the orders of the torsion subgroups of the c…
We examine the number of vanishings of quadratic twists of the L-function associated to an elliptic curve. Applying a conjecture for the full asymptotics of the moments of critical L-values we obtain a conjecture for the first two terms in the ratio of the number of vanishings of twists sorted according to arithmetic progressions.
We introduce the twisted $\boldsymbolμ_4$-normal form for elliptic curves, deriving in particular addition algorithms with complexity $9\mathbf{M} + 2\mathbf{S}$ and doubling algorithms with complexity $2\mathbf{M} + 5\mathbf{S} + 2\mathbf{m}$ over a binary field. Every ordinary elliptic curve over a finite field of characteristic 2 is isomorphic to one in this family. This improvement to the addition algorithm, applicable to a larger class of curves, is comparable to the $7\mathbf{M} + 2\mathbf{S}$ achieved for the $\boldsymbolμ_4$-normal form, and replaces the previously best known complexit…
We give a criterion to distinguish between a genus three Jacobian and its [-1] twist in terms of the product of the 36 even theta nulls. We also express the product of the 36 theta nulls in terms of the discriminant of a genus three curve. The results are arithmetic in nature and thus add to previous work over C on the product of the even theta nulls. They generalize previous work of Ritzenthaler and Lachaud for Abelian threefolds which are (2,2,2) isogenous to a product of elliptic curves. This answers a 2003 of letter of Jean-Pierre Serre to Jaap Top.
Let E be an elliptic curved defined over $\Q$ and let $K/\Q$ be a finite Galois extension with Galois group G. The equivariant Birch-Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture for $h^1(E\times_{\Q} K)(1)$ viewed as a motive over $\Q$ with coefficients in $\Q[G]$ relates the twisted L-values associated with E with the arithmetic invariants of the same. In this paper we prescribe an approach to verify this conjecture for a given data. Using this approach, we verify the conjecture for an elliptic curve of conductor 11 and an S_3-extension of $\Q$.
Given a newform f, we extend Howard's results on the variation of Heegner points in the Hida family of f to a general quaternionic setting. More precisely, we build big Heegner points and big Heegner classes in terms of compatible families of Heegner points on towers of Shimura curves. The novelty of our approach, which systematically exploits the theory of optimal embeddings, consists in treating both the case of definite quaternion algebras and the case of indefinite quaternion algebras in a uniform way. We prove results on the size of Nekovář's extended Selmer groups attached to suitable bi…
Given a perfect field $k$ with algebraic closure $\overline{k}$ and a variety $X$ over $\overline{k}$, the field of moduli of $X$ is the subfield of $\overline{k}$ of elements fixed by field automorphisms $γ\in\operatorname{Gal}(\overline{k}/k)$ such that the twist $X_γ$ is isomorphic to $X$. The field of moduli is contained in all subextensions $k\subset k'\subset\overline{k}$ such that $X$ descends to $k'$. In this paper we extend the formalism, and define the field of moduli when $k$ is not perfect. Furthermore, Dèbes and Emsalem identified a condition that ensures that a smooth curve is de…
In this paper we classify curves of genus two over a perfect field k of characteristic two. We find rational models of curves with a given arithmetic structure for the ramification divisor and we give necessary and sufficient conditions for two models of the same type to be k-isomorphic. As a consequence, we obtain an explicit formula for the number of k-isomorphism classes of curves of genus two over a finite field. Moreover, we prove that the field of moduli of any curve coincides with its field of definition, by exhibiting rational models of curves with any prescribed value of their Igusa i…
Let N be a prime and let A be a quotient of J_0(N) over Q associated to a newform such that the special L-value of A (at s=1) is non-zero. Suppose that the algebraic part of the special L-value of A is divisible by an odd prime q such that q does not divide the numerator of (N-1)/12. Then the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture predicts that the q-adic valuations of the algebraic part of the special L-value of A and of the order of the Shafarevich-Tate group are both positive even numbers. Under a certain mod q non-vanishing hypothesis on special L-values of twists of A, we show that the q-ad…
