Lately we observe: (1) an upsurge of interest (in particular, triggered by a~paper by Atiyah and Witten) to manifolds with $G(2)$-type structure; (2) classifications are obtained of simple (finite-dimensional and graded vectorial) Lie superalgebras over fields of complex and real numbers and of simple finite-dimensional Lie algebras over algebraically closed fields of characteristic $p$ greater than 3; (3) importance of non-integrable distributions in observations (1) and (2).
We add to interrelation of (1)--(3) an explicit description of several exceptional simple Lie algebras for $p=2, 3$ (Brown, Ermolaev, Frank, and Skryabin algebras, and analogs of Melikyan algebras) as subalgebras of Lie algebras of vector fields preserving non-integrable distributions analogous to (or identical with) those preserved by $\mathfrak{g}(2)$, $\mathfrak{o}(7)$, $\mathfrak{sp}(4)$, $\mathfrak{sp}(10)$ and the Brown algebra $\mathfrak{br}(3)$. The description is performed in terms of Cartan-Tanaka-Shchepochkina prolongs and is similar to descriptions of simple Lie superalgebras of vector fields with polynomial coefficients. Our results illustrate usefulness of Shchepochkina's algorithm and SuperLie package; at least two families of simple Lie algebras found in the process are new.
Recently, Grozman and Leites returned to the original Cartan's description of Lie algebras to interpret the Melikyan algebras (for p<7) and several other little-known simple Lie algebras over algebraically closed fields for p=3 as subalgebras of Lie algebras of vector fields preserving nonintegrable distributions analogous to (or identical with) those preserved by G(2), O(7), Sp(4) and Sp(10). The description was performed in terms of Cartan-Tanaka-Shchepochkina prolongs using Shchepochkina's algorithm and with the help of SuperLie package. Grozman and Leites also found two new series of simpl…
We determine approximations to the decomposition matrices for unipotent $\ell$-blocks of several series of finite reductive groups of classical and exceptional type over $\FF_q$ of low rank in non-defining good characteristic~$\ell$.
We introduce Brauer algebras associated to complex reflection groups of type $G(m,p,n)$, and study their representation theory via Clifford theory. In particular, we determine the decomposition numbers of these algebras in characteristic zero.
In this paper we verify Navarro's refinement of the McKay conjecture for quasi-simple groups of Lie type in their defining characteristic. Navarro's refinement takes into account the action of specific Galois automorphisms on the characters present in the McKay conjecture. Our proof of this case of the conjecture relies on a character correspondence constructed by Maslowski. Building on this we verify the inductive condition for Navarro's refinement for most groups of Lie type in defining characteristic.
For Weyl groups of classical types, we present formulas to calculate the restriction of Springer representations to a maximal parabolic subgroup of the same type. As a result, we give recursive formulas for Euler characteristics of Springer fibers for classical types. We also give tables of those for exceptional types.
The McKay--Navarro conjecture is a refinement of the McKay conjecture that additionally takes the action of some Galois automorphisms into account. We verify the inductive McKay--Navarro condition in the defining characteristic for the finite groups of Lie type with exceptional graph automorphisms, the Suzuki and Ree groups, $\mathsf{B}_n(2)$ ($n \geq 2$), and the groups of Lie type with non-generic Schur multiplier. This completes the verification of the inductive McKay--Navarro condition for the finite groups of Lie type in their defining characteristic.
We give a lower bound of the Loewy length of the projective cover of the trivial module for the group algebra $kG$ of a finite group $G$ of Lie type defined over a finite field of odd characteristic $p$, where $k$ is an arbitrary field of characteristic $p$; the proof uses Auslander-Reiten theory.
Let $G$ be a finite group of Lie type and $\ell$ be a prime which is not equal to the defining characteristic of $G$. In this note we discuss some open problems concerning the $\ell$-modular irreducible representations of $G$. We also establish a strengthening of the results in [13] on the classification of the $\ell$-modular principal series representations of $G$.
For maximal compact subgroups of the metaplectic group, the minimal types in the Schrödinger model of the Weil representation are calculated explicitly. Although these types are known in the case of odd residual characteristic, this computation is done for arbitrary residual characteristic.
We compute the dimensions of $\operatorname{Ext}_G^n(V, W)$ for all irreducible $V$, $W$ lying in $r$-blocks of cyclic defect in the simple groups $\operatorname{Sz}(q)$, $\operatorname{PSU}_3(q)$ and $\operatorname{{}^2G}_2(q)$ in cross characteristic, obtaining in particular the dimensions of all cohomology groups for such modules. Along the way, we also obtain an analogous result for any $r$-block of cyclic defect whose Brauer tree is either a star or line (open polygon).
We reformulate the inductive McKay condition, from Isaacs-Malle-Navarro, and apply the new criterion to simple groups of Lie type, when the prime is the defining characteristic p. Thereby we make use of a recent result of Maslowski. This proves that these simple group satisfy the inductive McKay condition for p. In the non simply-laced types and non-classical types this reproves earlier results by Brunat and Brunat-Himstedt.
Let $G(q)$ be a finite group of Lie type over a field with $q$ elements, where $q$ is a prime power. The Green functions of $G(q)$, as defined by Deligne and Lusztig, are known in \textit{almost} all cases by work of Beynon--Spaltenstein, Lusztig und Shoji. Open cases exist for groups of exceptional type ${^2\!E}_6$, $E_7$, $E_8$ in small characteristics. We propose a general method for dealing with these cases, which procedes by a reduction to the case where $q$ is a prime and then uses computer algebra techniques. In this way, all open cases in type ${^2\!E}_6$, $E_7$ are solved, as well as …
In this article we study a conjecture of Geiss-Leclerc-Schr{ö}er, which is an analogue of a classical conjecture of Lusztig in the Weyl group case. It concerns the relation between canonical basis and semi-canonical basis through the characteristic cycles. We formulate an approach to this conjecture and prove it for type $A_2$ quiver. In general type A case, we reduce the conjecture to show that certain nearby cycles have vanishing Euler characteristic.
We study the polynomial representation of the rational Cherednik algebra of type $A_{n-1}$ with generic parameter in characteristic $p$ for $p \mid n$. We give explicit formulas for generators for the maximal proper graded submodule, show that they cut out a complete intersection, and thus compute the Hilbert series of the irreducible quotient. Our methods are motivated by taking characteristic $p$ analogues of existing characteristic $0$ results.
In this text, we characterize the representation type of an acyclic quiver by the properties of its associated quiver Grassmannians. This characterization utilizes and extends known results about singular quiver Grassmannians and cell decompositions into affine spaces. While all quiver Grassmannians for indecomposable representations of quivers of finite representation types $A$ and $D$ are smooth and admit cell decompositions, it turns out that all quiver Grassmannians for indecomposable representations of quivers of tame types $A$ and $D$ admit cell decompositions, but some of these quiver G…
We show that simple highest weight modules for sl_12 may have reducible characteristic variety. This answers a question of Borho-Brylinski and Joseph from 1984. The relevant singularity under Beilinson-Bernstein localization is the (in)famous Kashiwara-Saito singularity. We sketch the rather indirect route via the p-canonical basis, W-graphs and decomposition numbers for perverse sheaves that led us to examine this singularity.
In this paper we extend the construction of the canonical polarized variation of Hodge structures over tube domain considered by B. Gross in \cite{G} to bounded symmetric domain and introduce a series of invariants of infinitesimal variation of Hodge structures, which we call characteristic subvarieties. We prove that the characteristic subvariety of the canonical polarized variations of Hodge structures over irreducible bounded symmetric domains are identified with the characteristic bundles defined by N. Mok in \cite{M}. We verified the generating property of B. Gross for all irreducible bou…
In this paper we give a bound to the number of conjugacy classes of maximal subgroups of any almost simple group whose socle is a classical group of Lie type. The bound is $2n^{5.2}+n\log_2\log_2 q$, where $n$ is the dimension of the classical socle and $q$ is the size of the defining field. To obtain the bound, we first bound the number of projective cross-characteristic representations of simple groups of Lie type as a function of the representation degree. These bounds are computed for different families of groups separately. In the computation, we use information on class numbers, minimal …
Let $G$ be a connected reductive algebraic group over an algebraically closed field $\mathbf{k}$, and let Lie$(G)$ be its associated Lie algebra. In his series of papers on unipotent elements in small characteristic, Lusztig defined a partition of the unipotent variety of $G$. This partition is very useful when working with representations of $G$. Equivalently, one can consider certain subsets of the nilpotent variety of Lie$(G)$ called pieces. This approach appears in Lusztig's article from 2011. The pieces for the exceptional groups of type $G_2$, $F_4$, $E_6$, $E_7$, and $E_8$ in bad charac…
Let G be a finite group of Lie type, defined over a field k of characteristic p > 0. We find explicit bounds for the dimension of the first cohomology group for G with coefficients in a simple kG-module. We proceed by bounding the number of composition factors of Weyl modules for simple algebraic groups independently of p and using this to deduce bounds for the 1-cohomology of simple algebraic groups. Finally, we use this to obtain estimations for the growth rate of the maximum dimension {γ_l} of these 1-cohomology groups over all groups of Lie type of rank l. We find that log γ_l is O(l^3 log…
