The proof of Lemma 4.2 is corrected. It now requires the existence of a certain cut-off function. In order to ensure this we added the condition "very proper" to the definition of an orbispace atlas (which holds automaticlly if the atlas is locally compact). We also added two references connected with this Lemma

We study the topology of T-duality for pairs of U(1)-bundles and three-dimensional integral cohomology classes over orbispaces. In particular, our results apply to U(1)-spaces with finite isotropy. We generalize the theory developed in our previous paper math.GT/0405132 from spaces to orbispaces.
We show that almost complex circle actions with exactly three fixed points do not exist in dimension 8 and present an infinite series of 6-dimensional manifolds possessing an almost complex circle action with exactly two fixed points.
Classical work of Lee, Schultz, and Stolz relates the smooth transformation groups of exotic spheres to the stable homotopy groups of spheres. In this note, we apply recent progress on the latter to produce smooth circle and cyclic group actions on certain exotic spheres.
We prove that if the circle group acts smooth and unitary on 2n-dimensional stably complex manifold with two isolated fixed points and it is not bound equivariantly, then n=1 or 3. Our proof relies on the rigid Hirzebruch genera.
Kawakubo and Uchida showed that, if a closed oriented $4k$-dimensional manifold $M$ admits a semi-free circle action such that the dimension of the fixed point set is less than $2k$, then the signature of $M$ vanishes. In this note, by using $G$-signature theorem and the rigidity of the signature operator, we generalize this result to more general circle actions. Combining the same idea with the remarkable Witten-Taubes-Bott rigidity theorem, we explore more vanishing results on spin manifolds admitting such circle actions. Our results are closely related to some earlier results of Conner-Floy…
In the paper we describe obstructions for the existence of symplectic and Hamiltonian symplectic circle actions on closed compact manifolds in terms of Hirzebruch genera and relations between differential and homotopic invariants of such manifolds.
A Bott tower is the total space of a tower of fibre bundles with base CP^1 and fibres CP^1. Every Bott tower of height n is a smooth projective toric variety whose moment polytope is combinatorially equivalent to an n-cube. A circle action is semifree if it is free on the complement to fixed points. We show that a (quasi)toric manifold (in the sense of Davis-Januszkiewicz) over an n-cube with a semifree circle action and isolated fixed points is a Bott tower. Then we show that every Bott tower obtained in this way is topologically trivial, that is, homeomorphic to a product of 2-spheres. This …
We show that recent results of Friedl-Vidussi and Chen imply that a symplectic manifold admits a fixed point free circle action if and only if it admits a symplectic circle action and we give a complete description of the symplectic cone in this case. This then completes the characterisation of symplectic 4-manifolds that admit non-trivial circle actions.
Given an $S^1$-manifold with isolated fixed points, some recent papers are concerned with the relationship between the least number of fixed points and the characteristic numbers of this manifold, and their proofs have some similar features. The main purpose of this short survey article is, by using the language of equivariant cohomology, to present a unified method to deal with such problems, of which the related known results are direct corollaries.
We prove that closed symplectic four-manifolds do not admit any smooth free circle actions with contractible orbits, without assuming that the actions preserve the symplectic forms. In higher dimensions such actions by symplectomorphisms do exist, and we give explicit examples based on a construction of Fernandez, Gray and Morgan. We also prove that the only compact complex surfaces admitting free circle actions with contractible orbits are primary Hopf surfaces.
Let S be a connected orientable surface with finitely many punctures, finitely many boundary components, and genus at least 6. Then any C^1 action of the mapping class group of S on the circle is trivial. The techniques used in the proof of this result permit us to show that products of Kazhdan groups and certain lattices cannot have C^1 faithful actions on the circle. We also prove that for n > 5, any C^1 action of Aut(F_n) or Out(F_n) on the circle factors through an action of Z/2Z.
We prove rigidity and vanishing theorems for several holomorphic Euler characteristics on complex contact manifolds admitting holomorphic circle actions preserving the contact structure. Such vanishings are reminiscent of those of LeBrun and Salamon on Fano contact manifolds but under a symmetry assumption instead of a curvature condition.
This paper contains several results concerning circle action on almost-complex and smooth manifolds. More precisely, we show that, for an almost-complex manifold $M^{2mn}$(resp. a smooth manifold $N^{4mn}$), if there exists a partition $λ=(λ_{1},...,λ_{u})$ of weight $m$ such that the Chern number $(c_{λ_{1}}... c_{λ_{u}})^{n}[M]$ (resp. Pontrjagin number $(p_{λ_{1}}... p_{λ_{u}})^{n}[N]$) is nonzero, then \emph{any} circle action on $M^{2mn}$ (resp. $N^{4mn}$) has at least $n+1$ fixed points. When an even-dimensional smooth manifold $N^{2n}$ admits a semi-free action with isolated fixed point…
The main results of this paper describes a formula for the Seiberg-Witten invariant of a 4-manifold which admits a nontrivial free S^1-action. We use this theorem to produce a nonsymplectic 4-manifold with a free circle action whose orbit space fibers over S^1. We also describe a 3-manifold which is not the orbit space of any symplectic 4-manifold with a free circle action. A corollary of the main theorem is a formula for the 3-dimensional Seiberg-Witten invariants of the total space of a circle bundle over a surface.
The aim of this paper is to study compact 5--manifolds which admit fixed point free circle actions. The first result implies that the torsion in the second homology and the second Stiefel--Whitney class have to satisfy strong restrictions. We then show that for simply connected 5--manifolds these restrictions are necessary and sufficient.
We define a "circle Euler characteristic" of a circle action on a compact manifold or finite complex X. It lies in the first Hochschild homology group of ZG where G is the fundamental group of X. It is analogous in many ways to the ordinary Euler characteristic. One application is an intuitively satisfying formula for the Euler class (integer coefficients) of the normal bundle to a smooth circle action without fixed points on a manifold. In the special case of a 3-dimensional Seifert fibered space, this formula is particularly effective. \~

We define a notion of semi-conjugacy between orientation-preserving actions of a group on the circle, which for fixed point free actions coincides with a classical definition of Ghys. We then show that two circle actions are semi-conjugate if and only if they have the same bounded Euler class. This settles some existing confusion present in the literature.
Let $M$ be a compact oriented simply-connected manifold of dimension at least 8. Assume $M$ is equipped with a torsion-free semi-free circle action with isolated fixed points. We prove $M$ has a perfect invariant Morse-Smale function. The major ingredient in the proof is a new cancellation theorem for the invariant Morse theory.
Given a uniform foliation by Gromov hyperbolic leaves on a $3$-manifold, we show that the action of the fundamental group on the universal circle is minimal and transitive on pairs of different points. We also prove two other results: we prove that general uniform Reebless foliations are $\mathbb{R}$-covered and we give a new description of the universal circle of $\mathbb{R}$-covered foliations with Gromov hyperbolic leaves in terms of the JSJ decomposition of $M$.
We characterize the semi-conjugacy class of a Fuchsian action of the modular group on the circle in terms of rotation numbers of two standard generators and that of their product. We also show that among lifts of a Fuchsian action of the modular group, only 5-fold lift admits a similar characterization. These results indicate similarity and difference between rotation number and linear character.
The main result of this paper is a formula for calculating the Seiberg-Witten invariants of 4-manifolds with fixed-point free circle actions. This is done by showing under suitable conditions the existence of a diffeomorphism between the moduli space of the 4-manifold and the moduli space of the quotient 3-orbifold. Two corollaries include b_+>1 4-manifolds with fixed-point free circle actions are simple type and a new proof that the four dimensional invariants of $Y \times S^1$ are equal to the the three dimensional invariants of $Y$. An infinite number of b_+=1 4-manifolds where the Seiberg-…
Let $Σ_{g}$ be a closed, connected, and oriented surface of genus $g \geq 24$ and let $Γ$ be a finite index subgroup of the mapping class group $Mod(Σ_{g})$ that contains the Torelli group $\mathcal{I}(Σ_g)$. Then any orientation preserving $C^1$ action of $Γ$ on the circle cannot be faithful. We also show that if $Γ$ is a finite index subgroup of $Aut(F_n)$, when $n \geq 8$, that contains the subgroup of IA-automorphisms, then any orientation preserving $C^1$ action of $Γ$ on the circle cannot be faithful. Similarly, if $Γ$ is a finite index subgroup of $Out(F_n)$, when $n \geq 8$, that conta…
Let $M$ be a closed 4-manifold with a free circle action. If the orbit manifold $N^3$ satisfies an appropriate fibering condition, then we show how to represent a cone in $H^2(M;\R)$ by symplectic forms. This generalizes earlier constructions by Thurston, Bouyakoub and Fernández-Gray-Morgan. In the case that $M$ is the product 4-manifold $S^1\times N$ our construction complements the results of \cite{FV08} (arXiv:0805:1234 [math.GT]) and allows us to completely determine the symplectic cone of such 4-manifolds. The content of this paper partly overlaps with the content of the unpublished prepr…
In this paper we study the topological T-dual of spaces with a non-free circle action mainly using the stack theory method of Bunke and co-workers \cite{Bunke1}. We first compare three formalisms for obtaining the Topological T-dual of a semi-free $S^1$-space in a simple example. Then, we calculate the T-dual of general KK-monopole backgrounds using the stack theory method. We define the dyonic coordinate for these backgrounds. We introduce an approach to Topological T-duality using classifying spaces which simultaneously generalizes the methods of Bunke et al \cite{Bunke1} and Mathai and Wu \…
We show that if $G_1$ and $G_2$ are non-solvable groups, then no $C^{1,τ}$ action of $(G_1\times G_2)*\mathbb{Z}$ on $S^1$ is faithful for $τ>0$. As a corollary, if $S$ is an orientable surface of complexity at least three then the critical regularity of an arbitrary finite index subgroup of the mapping class group $\mathrm{Mod}(S)$ with respect to the circle is at most one, thus strengthening a result of the first two authors with Baik.
We present an explicit formula for the topology and H-flux of the T-dual of a general type II compactification, significantly generalizing earlier results. Our results apply to T-dualities with respect to any circle action on spacetime. As before, T-duality exchanges type IIA and type IIB string theories. A new consequence is that the T-dual spacetime is a singular space when the fixed point set is non-empty; the singularities correspond to Kaluza-Klein monopoles. We propose that the Ramond-Ramond charges of type II string theories on the singular dual are classified by twisted equivariant coh…
Let (M, F) be a compact codimension-one foliated manifold whose leaves are equipped with Riemannian metrics, and consider continuous functions on M that are harmonic along the leaves of F . If every such function is constant on leaves we say that (M, F) has the Liouville property. Our main result is that codimension-one foliated bundles over compact negatively curved manifolds satisfy the Liouville property. Related results for R-covered foliations, as well as for discrete group actions and discrete harmonic functions, are also established.
