We study a stochastic boundary value problem on $(0,1)^d$ of elliptic type in dimension $d\ge 4$, driven by a coloured noise. An approximation scheme based on a suitable discretization of the Laplacian on a lattice of $(0,1)^d$ is presented; we also give the rate of convergence to the original SPDE in $L^p(Ω;L^{2}(D))$--norm, for some values of $p$.
We consider an elliptic PDE in two variables. As one parameter approaches zero, this PDE collapses to a parabolic one, that is forward parabolic in a part of the domain and backward parabolic in the remainder. Such problems arise naturally in various stochastic models, such as fluid models for data-handling systems and Markov-modulated queues. We employ singular perturbation methods to study the problem for small values of the parameter.
Corrector estimates constitute a key ingredient in the derivation of optimal convergence rates via two-scale expansion techniques in homogenization theory of random uniformly elliptic equations. The present work follows up - in terms of corrector estimates - on the recent work of Fischer and Neukamm (arXiv:1908.02273) which provides a quantitative stochastic homogenization theory of nonlinear uniformly elliptic equations under a spectral gap assumption. We establish optimal-order estimates (with respect to the scaling in the ratio between the microscopic and the macroscopic scale) for higher-o…
This paper present a construction and the analysis of a class of non-Gaussian positive-definite matrix-valued homogeneous random fields with uncertain spectral measure for stochastic elliptic operators. Then the stochastic elliptic boundary value problem in a bounded domain of the 3D-space is introduced and analyzed for stochastic homogenization.
We prove regularity and stochastic homogenization results for certain degenerate elliptic equations in nondivergence form. The equation is required to be strictly elliptic, but the ellipticity may oscillate on the microscopic scale and is only assumed to have a finite $d$th moment, where $d$ is the dimension. In the general stationary-ergodic framework, we show that the equation homogenizes to a deterministic, uniformly elliptic equation, and we obtain an explicit estimate of the effective ellipticity, which is new even in the uniformly elliptic context. Showing that such an equation behaves l…
We consider the corrector equation from the stochastic homogenization of uniformly elliptic finite-difference equations with random, possibly non-symmetric coefficients. Under the assumption that the coefficients are stationary and ergodic in the quantitative form of a Logarithmic Sobolev inequality (LSI), we obtain optimal bounds on the corrector and its gradient in dimensions $d \geq 2$. Similar estimates have recently been obtained in the special case of diagonal coefficients making extensive use of the maximum principle and scalar techniques. Our new method only invokes arguments that are …
We prove existence and uniqueness of stochastic representations for solutions to elliptic and parabolic boundary value and obstacle problems associated with a degenerate Markov diffusion process. In particular, our article focuses on the Heston stochastic volatility process, which is widely used as an asset price model in mathematical finance and a paradigm for a degenerate diffusion process where the degeneracy in the diffusion coefficient is proportional to the square root of the distance to the boundary of the half-plane. The generator of this process with killing, called the elliptic Hesto…
We introduce a new method for studying stochastic homogenization of elliptic equations in nondivergence form. The main application is an algebraic error estimate, asserting that deviations from the homogenized limit are at most proportional to a power of the microscopic length scale, assuming a finite range of dependence. The results are new even for linear equations. The arguments rely on a new geometric quantity which is controlled in part by adapting elements of the regularity theory for the Monge-Ampère equation.
In this article, we study elliptic stochastic partial differential equations with two reflect- ing walls h1 and h2, driven by multiplicative noise. The existence and uniqueness of the solutions are established.
We prove quantitative estimates for the stochastic homogenization of linear uniformly elliptic equations in nondivergence form. Under strong independence assumptions on the coefficients, we obtain optimal estimates on the subquadratic growth of the correctors with stretched exponential-type bounds in probability. Like the theory of Gloria and Otto \cite{GO1,GO2} for divergence form equations, the arguments rely on nonlinear concentration inequalities combined with certain estimates on the Green's functions and derivative bounds on the correctors. We obtain these analytic estimates by developin…
In this paper, we consider stochastic homogenization of elliptic equations with unbounded and non-uniformly elliptic coefficients. Extending subadditive arguments, we get an estimate for the rate of the convergence of the solution of the Dirichlet problem under the condition that coefficients in the unit cube have a certain exponential integrability. For the coefficient field $\mathbf{a}$ in this paper, we only assume a constant decrease at a constant distance of the maximal correlation as an assumption of ergodicity, and stationarity with respect to $\mathbb{Z}^d$-translations.
This paper deals with linear stochastic partial differential equations with variable coefficients driven by Lévy white noise. We first derive an existence theorem for integral transforms of Lévy white noise and prove the existence of generalized and mild solutions of second order elliptic partial differential equations. Furthermore, we discuss the generalized electric Schrödinger operator for different potential functions $V$.
We prove the existence and uniqueness of weak solution of a Neumann boundary problem for an elliptic partial differential equation (PDE for short) with a singular divergence term which can only be understood in a weak sense. A probabilistic approach is applied by studying the backward stochastic differential equation (BSDE for short) corresponding to the PDE.
This paper deals with the homogenization problem of one-dimensional pseudo-elliptic equations with a rapidly varying random potential. The main purpose is to characterize the homogenization error (random fluctuations), i.e., the difference between the random solution and the homogenized solution, which strongly depends on the autocovariance property of the underlying random potential. It is well known that when the random potential has short-range dependence, the rescaled homogenization error converges in distribution to a stochastic integral with respect to standard Brownian motion. Here, we …
Partial differential equation is a powerful tool to characterize various physics systems. In practice, measurement errors are often present and probability models are employed to account for such uncertainties. In this paper, we present a Monte Carlo scheme that yields unbiased estimators for expectations of random elliptic partial differential equations. This algorithm combines multilevel Monte Carlo [Giles, 2008] and a randomization scheme proposed by [Rhee and Glynn, 2012, Rhee and Glynn, 2013]. Furthermore, to obtain an estimator with both finite variance and finite expected computational …
We introduce a stochastic partial differential equation (SPDE) with elliptic operator in divergence form, with measurable and bounded coefficients and driven by space-time white noise. Such SPDEs could be used in mathematical modelling of diffusion phenomena in medium consisting of different kinds of materials and undergoing stochastic perturbations. We characterize the solution and, using the Stein--Malliavin calculus, we prove that the sequence of its recentered and renormalized spatial quadratic variations satisfies an almost sure central limit theorem. Particular focus is given to the inte…
We derive optimal-order homogenization rates for random nonlinear elliptic PDEs with monotone nonlinearity in the uniformly elliptic case. More precisely, for a random monotone operator on $\mathbb{R}^d$ with stationary law (i.e. spatially homogeneous statistics) and fast decay of correlations on scales larger than the microscale $\varepsilon>0$, we establish homogenization error estimates of the order $\varepsilon$ in case $d\geq 3$, respectively of the order $\varepsilon |\log \varepsilon|^{1/2}$ in case $d=2$. Previous results in nonlinear stochastic homogenization have been limited to a sm…
The past decades have seen increasing interest in modelling uncertainty by heterogeneous methods, combining probability and interval analysis, especially for assessing parameter uncertainty in engineering models. A unifying mathematical framework admitting the combination of a wide range of such methods is the theory of random sets, describing input and output of a structural model by set-valued random variables. The purpose of this paper is to highlight the mathematics behind this approach. The modelling and computational implications are discussed and demonstrated with the help of prototypic…
We establish Schauder a priori estimates and regularity for solutions to a class of boundary-degenerate elliptic linear second-order partial differential equations. Furthermore, given a smooth source function, we prove regularity of solutions up to the portion of the boundary where the operator is degenerate. Degenerate-elliptic operators of the kind described in our article appear in a diverse range of applications, including as generators of affine diffusion processes employed in stochastic volatility models in mathematical finance, generators of diffusion processes arising in mathematical b…
For given strongly local Dirichlet forms with possibly degenerate symmetric (sub)-elliptic matrix, we show the existence of weak solutions to the stochastic differential equations (associated with the Dirichlet forms) starting from all points in $\R^d$. More precisely, using heat kernel estimates, stochastic calculus, and Dirichlet form theory, we obtain the pointwise existence of weak solutions to the stochastic differential equations which have possibly unbounded and discontinuous drift. We also present some conditions that the weak solutions become pathwise unique strong solutions and provi…
Recently, so-called full-history recursive multilevel Picard (MLP) approximation schemes have been introduced and shown to overcome the curse of dimensionality in the numerical approximation of semilinear parabolic partial differential equations (PDEs) with Lipschitz nonlinearities. The key contribution of this article is to introduce and analyze a new variant of MLP approximation schemes for certain semilinear elliptic PDEs with Lipschitz nonlinearities and to prove that the proposed approximation schemes overcome the curse of dimensionality in the numerical approximation of such semilinear e…
For Itô stochastic processes in $\mathbb{R}^{d}$ with drift in $L_{d}$ Aleksandrov's type estimates are established in the elliptic and parabolic settings. They are applied to estimating the resolvent operators of the corresponding elliptic and parabolic operators in $L_{p}$ and $L_{p+1}$, respectively, where $p\geq d$.
We apply improved elliptic regularity results to a concrete symmetric Dirichlet form and various non-symmetric Dirichlet forms with possibly degenerate symmetric diffusion matrix. Given the (non)-symmetric Dirichlet form, using elliptic regularity results and stochastic calculus we show weak existence of the corresponding singular stochastic differential equation for any starting point in some subset E of R^d. As an application of our approach we can show the existence of n-regularized Liouville Brownian motion only via Dirichlet form theory starting from all points in R^2.
In this paper we show that solutions of stochastic partial differential equations driven by Brownian motion can be approximated by stochastic partial differential equations forced by pure jump noise/random kicks. Applications to stochastic Burgers equations are discussed.
In insurance mathematics optimal control problems over an infinite time horizon arise when computing risk measures. Their solutions correspond to solutions of deterministic semilinear (degenerate) elliptic partial differential equations. In this paper we propose a deep neural network algorithm for solving such partial differential equations in high dimensions. The algorithm is based on the correspondence of elliptic partial differential equations to backward stochastic differential equations with random terminal time.
We prove an explicit formula for the law in zero of the solution of a class of elliptic SPDE in $\mathbb{R}^2$. This formula is the simplest instance of dimensional reduction, discovered in the physics literature by Parisi and Sourlas (1979), which links the law of an elliptic SPDE in $d + 2$ dimension with a Gibbs measure in $d$ dimensions. This phenomenon is similar to the relation between an $\mathbb{R}^{d + 1}$ dimensional parabolic SPDE and its $\mathbb{R}^d$ dimensional invariant measure. As such, dimensional reduction of elliptic SPDEs can be considered a sort of elliptic stochastic qua…

To model subsurface flow in uncertain heterogeneous\ fractured media an elliptic equation with a discontinuous stochastic diffusion coefficient - also called random field - may be used. In case of a one-dimensional parameter space, Lévy processes allow for jumps and display great flexibility in the distributions used. However, in various situations (e.g. microstructure modeling), a one-dimensional parameter space is not sufficient. Classical extensions of Lévy processes on two parameter dimensions suffer from the fact that they do not allow for spatial discontinuities. In this paper a new subo…
We introduce seven families of stochastic systems of interacting particles in one-dimension corresponding to the seven families of irreducible reduced affine root systems. We prove that they are determinantal in the sense that all spatio-temporal correlation functions are given by determinants controlled by a single function called the spatio-temporal correlation kernel. For the four families ${A}_{N-1}$, ${B}_N$, ${C}_N$ and ${D}_N$, we identify the systems of stochastic differential equations solved by these determinantal processes, which will be regarded as the elliptic extensions of the Dy…
