We investigate the rotation sets of billiards on the $m$-dimensional torus with one small convex obstacle and in the square with one small convex obstacle. In the first case the displacement function, whose averages we consider, measures the change of the position of a point in the universal covering of the torus (that is, in the Euclidean space), in the second case it measures the rotation around the obstacle. A substantial part of the rotation set has usual strong properties of rotation sets.
We study the size of the set of ergodic directions for the directional billiard flows on the infinite band $\R\times [0,h]$ with periodically placed linear barriers of length $0<λ<h$. We prove that the set of ergodic directions is always uncountable. Moreover, if $λ/h\in(0,1)$ is rational the Hausdorff dimension of the set of ergodic directions is greater than 1/2. In both cases (rational and irrational) we construct explicitly some sets of ergodic directions.
For billiards with $N$ obstacles on a torus, we study the behavior of specific kind of its trajectories, \emph{the so called admissible trajectories}. Using the methods developed in \cite{1}, we prove that the \emph{admissible rotation set} is convex, and the periodic trajectories of admissible type are dense in the admissible rotation set. In addition, we show that the admissible rotation set is a proper subset of the general rotation set.
We consider a geodesic billiard system consisting of a complete Riemannian manifold and an obstacle submanifold with boundary at which the trajectories of the geodesic flow experience specular reflections. We show that if the geodesic billiard system is hyperbolic on its trapped set and the latter is compact and non-grazing the techniques for open hyperbolic systems developed by Dyatlov and Guillarmou can be applied to a smooth model for the discontinuous flow defined by the non-grazing billiard trajectories. This allows us to obtain a meromorphic resolvent for the generator of the billiard fl…
We investigate the rotation sets of open billiards in $\mathbb{R}^N$ for the natural observable related to a starting point of a given billiard trajectory. We prove that the general rotation set is convex and the set of all convex combinations of rotation vectors of periodic trajectory $P_ϕ$ is dense in it. We provide a constructive proof which illustrates that the set $P_ϕ$ is dense in the pointwise rotation set, and the closure of the pointwise rotation set is convex. We also consider a class of billiards consisting of three obstacles and construct a sequence in the symbol space such that it…
In this paper, we discuss rotation number on the invariant curve of a one parameter family of outer billiard tables. Given a convex polygon $η$, we can construct an outer billiard table $T$ by cutting out a fixed area from the interior of $η$. $T$ is piece-wise hyperbolic and the polygon $η$ is an invariant curve of $T$ under the billiard map $ϕ$. We will show that, if $β$ is a periodic point under the outer billiard map with rational rotation number $τ= p / q$, then the $n$th iteration of the billiard map is not the local identity at $β$. This proves that the rotation number $τ$ as a function…
We study periodic wind-tree models, billiards in the plane endowed with $\mathbb{Z}^2$-periodically located identical connected symmetric right-angled obstacles. We show asymptotic formulas for the number of (isotopy classes of) closed billiard trajectories (up to $\mathbb{Z}^2$-translations) on the wind-tree billiard. We also compute explicitly the associated Siegel-Veech constant for generic wind-tree billiards depending on the number of corners on the obstacle.
We study periodic wind-tree models, billiards in the plane endowed with $\mathbb{Z}^2$-periodically located identical connected symmetric right-angled obstacles. We exhibit effective asymptotic formulas for the number of (isotopy classes of) periodic billiard trajectories (up to $\mathbb{Z}^2$-translations) on Veech wind-tree billiards, that is, wind-tree billiards whose underlying compact translation surfaces are Veech surfaces. We show that the error term depends on spectral properties of the Veech group and give explicit estimates in the case when obstacles are squares of side length $1/2$.
We study the homotopical rotation vectors and the homotopical rotation sets for the billiard flow on the unit flat torus with two, disjoint and orthogonal cylindrical scatterers removed from it. The natural habitat for these objects is the infinite cone erected upon the Cantor set $\text{Ends}(G)$ of all "ends" of the hyperbolic group $G=π_1(\mathbf{Q})$. An element of $\text{Ends}(G)$ describes the direction in (the Cayley graph of) the group $G$ in which the considered trajectory escapes to infinity, whereas the height function $s$ ($s\ge 0$) of the cone gives us the average speed at which t…
Traditionally, rotation numbers for toroidal billiard flows are defined as the limiting vectors of average displacements per time on trajectory segments. Naturally, these creatures are living in the (commutative) vector space $\real^n$, if the toroidal billiard is given on the flat $n$-torus. The billard trajectories, being curves, oftentimes getting very close to closed loops, quite naturally define elements of the fundamental group of the billiard table. The simplest non-trivial fundamental group obtained this way belongs to the classical Sinai billiard, i.e., the billiard flow on the 2-toru…
We study polygonal billiards with one-sided vertical mirror scattered on a square billiard table. We associate trajectories of these kinds of billiards with double rotations and study orbit behavior and questions of complexity.
This article concerns a class of open billiards consisting of a finite number of strictly convex, non-eclipsing obstacles $K$. The non-wandering set $M_0$ of the billiard ball map is a topological Cantor set and its Hausdorff dimension has been previously estimated for billiards in $\mathbb{R}^2$, using well-known techniques. We extend these estimates to billiards in $\mathbb{R}^n$, and make various refinements to the estimates. These refinements also allow improvements to other results. We also show that in many cases, the non-wandering set is confined to a particular subset of $\mathbb{R}^n$…
We show that in the space of all convex billiard boundaries, the set of boundaries with rational caustics is dense. More precisely, the set of billiard boundaries with caustics of rotation number $1/q$ is polynomial sense in the smooth case, and exponentially dense in the analytic case.
Traditionally, rotation numbers for toroidal billiard flows are defined as the limiting vectors of average displacements per time on trajectory segments. The billard trajectories, being curves, oftentimes getting very close to closed loops, quite naturally define elements of the fundamental group of the billiard table. The simplest non-trivial fundamental group obtained this way belongs to the classical Sinai billiard, i.e., the billiard flow on the 2-torus with a single, convex obstacle removed. This fundamental group is known to be the group $\textbf{F}_2$ freely generated by two elements, w…
The illumination problem is a popular topic in recreational mathematics: In a mirrored room, is every region illuminable from every point in the region? So-called \enquote{unilluminable rooms} are related to \enquote{trapped sets} in inverse scattering, and to billiards with divided phase space in dynamical systems. In each case, a billiard with a semi-ellipse has always been put forward as the standard counterexample: namely the Penrose room, the Livshits billiard, and the Bunimovich mushroom respectively. In this paper, we construct a large class of planar billiard obstacles, not necessarily…
This article is concerned with the study of Mather's β-function associated to Birkhoff billiards. This function corresponds to the minimal average action of orbits with a prescribed rotation number and, from a different perspective, it can be related to the maximal perimeter of periodic orbits with a given rotation number, the so-called Marked length spectrum. After having recalled its main properties and its relevance to the study of the billiard dynamics, we stress its connections to some intriguing open questions: Birkhoff conjecture and the isospectral rigidity of convex billiards. Both th…
In this paper we study the homotopical rotation vectors and the homotopical rotation sets for the billiard flow on the unit flat torus with three, mutually intersecting and mutually orthogonal cylindrical scatterers removed from it. The natural habitat for these objects is the infinite cone erected upon the Cantor set $\text{Ends}(\textbf{F}_3)$ of all "ends" of the hyperbolic group $\textbf{F}_3=π_1(\mathbf{Q})$. An element of $\text{Ends}(\textbf{F}_3)$ describes the direction in (the Cayley graph of) the group $\textbf{F}_3$ in which the considered trajectory escapes to infinity, whereas th…
We study billiard in the plane endowed with symmetric \$\mathbb{Z}^2\$-periodic obstacles of a right-angled polygonal shape. One of our main interests is the dependence of the diffusion rate of the billiard on the shape of the obstacle. We prove, in particular, that when the number of angles of a symmetric connected obstacle grows, the diffusion rate tends to zero, thus answering a question of J.-C. Yoccoz. Our results are based on computation of Lyapunov exponents of the Hodge bundle over hyperelliptic loci in the moduli spaces of quadratic differentials, which represents independent interest…
In this paper we study the dynamical billiards on a convex 2D sphere. We investigate some generic properties of the convex billiards on a general convex sphere. We prove that $C^\infty$ generically, every periodic point is either hyperbolic or elliptic with irrational rotation number. Moreover, every hyperbolic periodic point admits some transverse homoclinic intersections. A new ingredient in our approach is that we use Herman's result on Diophantine invariant curves to prove the nonlinear stability of elliptic periodic points for a dense subset of convex billiards.
Inspired by the work of Pujals and Sambarino on dominated splitting, we present billiards with a modified reflection law which constitute simple examples of dynamical systems with limit sets with dominated splitting and where the dynamics is a rational or irrational rotation.
In this paper we study convex caustics in Minkowski billiards. We show that for the Euclidean billiard dynamics in a planar smooth centrally symmetric and strictly convex body $K$, for every convex caustic which $K$ possesses, the "dual" billiard dynamics in which the table is the Euclidean unit disk and the geometry that governs the motion is induced by the body $K$, possesses a dual convex caustic. Such a pair of caustics is dual in a strong sense, and in particular they have the same perimeter, Lazutkin parameter (both measured with respect to the corresponding geometries), and rotation num…
We consider the outer billiards map with contraction outside polygons. We construct a 1-parameter family of systems such that each system has an open set in which the dynamics is reduced to that of a piecewise contraction on the interval. Using the theory of rotation numbers, we deduce that every point inside the open set is asymptotic to either a single periodic orbit (rational case) or a Cantor set (irrational case). In particular, we deduce existence of an attracting Cantor set for certain parameter values. Moreover, for a different choice of a 1-parameter family, we prove that the system i…

In this paper we prove the Birkhoff-Poritsky conjecture for centrally-symmetric $C^2$-smooth convex planar billiards. We assume that the domain $\mathcal A$ between the invariant curve of $4$-periodic orbits and the boundary of the phase cylinder is foliated by $C^0$-invariant curves. Under this assumption we prove that the billiard curve is an ellipse. For the original Birkhoff-Poritsky formulation we show that if a neighborhood of the boundary of billiard domain has a $C^1$-smooth foliation by convex caustics of rotation numbers in the interval (0; 1/4] then the boundary curve is an ellipse.…
A comprehensive study of periodic trajectories of billiards within ellipsoids in $d$-dimensional Euclidean space is presented. The novelty of the approach is based on a relationship established between periodic billiard trajectories and extremal polynomials on the systems of $d$ intervals on the real line. By leveraging deep, but yet not widely known results of the Krein-Levin-Nudelman theory of generalized Chebyshev polynomials, fundamental properties of billiard dynamics are proven for any $d$, viz., that the sequences of winding numbers are monotonic. By employing the potential theory we pr…
Billiard trajectories (broken generalised geodesics) are considered in the exterior of an obstacle $K$ with smooth boundary on an arbitrary Riemannian manifold. We prove a generalisation of the well-known Santalo's formula. As a consequence, it is established that if the set of trapped points has positive measure, then for all sufficiently small smooth perturbations of the boundary of $K$ the set of trapped points for the new obstacle obtained in this way also has positive measure. More generally the measure of the set of trapped points depends continuously on perturbations of the obstacle $K$…
Given an exact symplectic map $T$ of a cylinder with a generating function $H$ satisfying the so-called negative twist condition, $H_{12}>0$, we study the locally maximizing orbits of $T$, that is, configurations which are local maxima of the action functional $\sum_n H(q_n,q_{n+1})$. We provide a necessary and sufficient condition for a configuration to be locally maximizing. Using it, we consider a situation where $T$ has two generating functions with respect to two different sets of symplectic coordinates. We suggest a simple geometric condition which guarantees that the set of locally maxi…
It was proved in \cite{NS1} that obstacles $K$ in $\R^d$ that are finite disjoint unions of strictly convex domains with $C^3$ boundaries are uniquely determined by the travelling times of billiard trajectories in their exteriors and also by their so called scattering length spectra. However the case $d = 2$ is not properly covered in \cite{NS1}. In the present paper we give a separate different proof of the same result in the case $d = 2$.
We study the recurrence and ergodicity for the billiard on noncompact polygonal surfaces with a free, cocompact action of $\Z$ or $\Z^2$. In the $\Z$-periodic case, we establish criteria for recurrence. In the more difficult $\Z^2$-periodic case, we establish some general results. For a particular family of $\Z^2$-periodic polygonal surfaces, known in the physics literature as the wind-tree model, assuming certain restrictions of geometric nature, we obtain the ergodic decomposition of directional billiard dynamics for a dense, countable set of directions. This is a consequence of our results …
We consider a one-parameter family of invertible maps of a two-dimensional lattice, obtained by applying round-off to planar rotations. All orbits of these maps are conjectured to be periodic. We let the angle of rotation approach pi/2, and show that the limit of vanishing discretisation is described by an integrable piecewise-affine Hamiltonian flow, whereby the plane foliates into families of invariant polygons with an increasing number of sides. Considered as perturbations of the flow, the lattice maps assume a different character, described in terms of strip maps: a variant of those found …
We apply round-off to planar rotations, obtaining a one-parameter family of invertible maps of a two-dimensional lattice. As the angle of rotation approaches pi/2, the fourth iterate of the map produces piecewise-rectilinear motion, which develops along the sides of convex polygons. We characterise the dynamics ---which resembles outer billiards of polygons---as the concatenation of so-called strip maps, each providing an elementary perturbation of an underlying integrable system. Significantly, there are orbits which are subject to an arbitrarily large number of these perturbations during a s…
