In this paper, we study the group Pext(C,A) for locally compact abelian (LCA) groups A and C. Sufficient conditions are established for Pext(C,A) to coincide with the first Ulm subgroup of Ext(C,A). Some structural information on pure injectives in the category of LCA groups is obtained. Letting K denote the class of LCA groups which can be written as the topological direct sum of a compactly generated group and a discrete group, we determine the groups G in K which are pure injective in the category of LCA groups. Finally we describe those groups G in K such that every pure extension of G by a group in K splits and obtain a corresponding dual result.
Let $X$ be a compact torsion abelian group. In this paper, we show that an extension of $F_{p}$ by $X$ splits where $F_{p}$ is the p-adic number group and $p$ a prime number. Also, we show that an extension of a torsion-free, non-divisible LCA group by $X$ is not split.
Is every locally compact abelian group which admits a symplectic self-duality isomorphic to the product of a locally compact abelian group and its Pontryagin dual? Several sufficient conditions, covering all the typical applications are found. Counterexamples are produced by studying a seemingly unrelated question about the structure of maximal isotropic subgroups of finite abelian groups with symplectic self-duality (where the original question always has an affirmative answer).
This paper contains several results about the Chabauty space of a general locally compact abelian group. Notably, we determine its topological dimension, we characterize when it is totally disconnected or connected; we characterize isolated points.
Locally compact abelian groups are classified in which the sum of any two closed subgroups is itself closed. This amounts to reproving and extending results by Yu.~N.~Mukhin from 1970. Namely we contribute a complete classification of all totally disconnected \lca\ groups with $X+Y$ closed for any closed subgroups $X$ and $Y$.
We classify the locally compact second-countable (l.c.s.c.) groups $A$ that are abelian and topologically characteristically simple. All such groups $A$ occur as the monolith of some soluble l.c.s.c. group $G$ of derived length at most $3$; with known exceptions (specifically, when $A$ is $\mathbb{Q}^n$ or its dual for some $n \in \mathbb{N}$), we can take $G$ to be compactly generated. This amounts to a classification of the possible isomorphism types of abelian chief factors of l.c.s.c. groups, which is of particular interest for the theory of compactly generated locally compact groups.
We study the group $IAut(A)$ generated by the inertial automorphisms of an abelian group $A$, that is, automorphisms $γ$ with the property that each subgroup $H$ of $A$ has finite index in the subgroup generated by $H$ and $Hγ$. Clearly, $IAut(A)$ contains the group $FAut(A)$ of finitary automorphisms of $A$, which is known to be locally finite. In a previous paper, we showed that $IAut(A)$ is (locally finite)-by-abelian. In this paper, we show that $IAut(A)$ is also metabelian-by-(locally finite). In particular, $IAut(A)$ has a normal subgroup $Γ$ such that $IAut(A)/Γ$ is locally finite and $…
In this note we show that if $G$ is a countably infinite abelian group such that $nG=0$ for some integer $n$, then the only locally minimal group topology on $G$ is the discrete one.
It has been shown that the proper, non-locally finite pseudovarieties of abelian groups are not tame with respect to the canonical signature. In this paper, we show that every decidable, proper, non-locally finite pseudovariety of abelian groups is completely tame with respect to a further enlarged implicit signature. This theorem yields as a corollary that a pseudovariety of abelian groups is decidable if and only if it is completely tame.
For a locally quasi-convex (lqc) abelian group $G$, we give the first description of all compatible group topologies on $G$ and apply this result to the Mackey group problem for lqc groups. We characterize lqc abelian groups which are Mackey groups or admit a Mackey group topology and provide a characterization of two Mackey groups whose product is Mackey. We obtain the first characterization of locally convex spaces which are Mackey groups.
For a locally compact abelian group $G$ a simple proof is given for the known fact that a bounded domain $Ω$ tiles $G$ with translations by a lattice $Λ$ if and only if the set of characters of $G$ indexed by the dual lattice of $Λ$ is an orthogonal basis of $L^2(Ω).$ The proof uses simple techniques from Harmonic Analysis.
Starting out from results known for the most classical cases of N, Z^d, R^d or for sigma-finite abelian groups, here we define the notion of asymptotic uniform upper density in general locally compact abelian groups. Even if a bit surprising, the new notion proves to be the right extension of the classical cases of Z^d, R^d. The new notion is used to extend some analogous results previously obtained only for classical cases or sigma-finite abelian groups. In particular, we show the following extension of a well-known result for Z of Furstenberg: if in a general locally compact Abelian group G …
By the Heyde theorem, the Gaussian distribution on the real line is characterized by the symmetry of the conditional distribution of one linear form of of $n$ independent random variables given another. When $n=2$ we prove analogues of this theorem in the case when independent random variables take values in a locally compact Abelian group $X$ and coefficients of the linear forms are topological automorphisms of $X$.
The class of locally compact near abelian groups is introduced and investigated as a class of metabelian groups formalizing and applying the concept of scalar multiplication. The structure of locally compact near abelian groups and its close connections to prime number theory are discussed and elucidated by graph theoretical tools. These investigations require a thorough reviewing and extension to present circumstances of various aspects of the general theory of locally compact groups such as -the Chabauty space of closed subgroups with its natural compact Hausdorff topology, -a very general S…
We study the locally compact abelian groups in the class $\mathfrak E_{<\infty}$, that is, having only continuous endomorphisms of finite topological entropy, and in its subclass $\mathfrak E_0$, that is, having all continuous endomorphisms with vanishing topological entropy. We discuss the reduction of the problem to the case of periodic locally compact abelian groups, and then to locally compact abelian $p$-groups. We show that locally compact abelian $p$-groups of finite rank belong to $\mathfrak E_{<\infty}$, and that those of them that belong to $\mathfrak E_0$ are precisely the ones with…
We prove that every group ring of a non-abelian locally free group which is the union of an ascending sequence of free groups is primitive. In particular, every group ring of a countable non-abelian locally free group is primitive. In addition, by making use of the result, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for group rings of ascending HNN extensions of free groups to be primitive, which extends the known result for the countable case to the general cardinality case. In order to prove the main theorem, we state some graph-theoretic results and apply them to to Formanek's method.
It has been claimed by Halmos in [Comment on the real line, Bull. Amer. Math. Soc., 50 (1944), 877-878] that if G is a Hausdorff locally compact topological abelian group and if the character group of G is torsion free then G is divisible. We prove that such claim is false, by presenting a family of counterexamples. While other counterexamples are known (see [D. L. Armacost, The structure of locally compact abelian groups, 1981]), we also present a family of stronger counterexamples, showing that even if one assumes that the character group of G is both torsion free and divisible, it does not …
In this article we study locally compact abelian (LCA) groups from the viewpoint of derived categories, using that their category is quasi-abelian in the sense of J.-P. Schneiders. We define a well-behaved derived Hom-complex with values in the derived category of Hausdorff topological abelian groups. Furthermore we introduce a smallness condition for LCA groups and show that such groups have a natural tensor product and internal Hom which both admit derived versions.
Suppose $G$ is a 1-ended finitely presented group that is hyperbolic relative to $\mathcal P$ a finite collection of 1-ended finitely presented proper subgroups of $G$. Our main theorem states that if the boundary $\partial (G,{\mathcal P})$ is locally connected and the second cohomology group $H^2(P,\mathbb ZP)$ is free abelian for each $P\in \mathcal P$, then $H^2(G,\mathbb ZG)$ is free abelian. When $G$ is 1-ended it is conjectured that $\partial (G,\mathcal P)$ is always locally connected. Under mild conditions on $G$ and the members of $\mathcal P$ the 1-ended and local connectivity hypot…
We prove that Moufang sets with abelian root groups arising at infinity of a locally finite tree all come from rank one simple algebraic groups over local fields.
In this paper we study non-abelian extensions of a Lie group $G$ modeled on a locally convex space by a Lie group $N$. The equivalence classes of such extension are grouped into those corresponding to a class of so-called smooth outer actions $S$ of $G$ on $N$. If $S$ is given, we show that the corresponding set $\Ext(G,N)_S$ of extension classes is a principal homogeneous space of the locally smooth cohomology group $H^2_{ss}(G,Z(N))_S$. To each $S$ a locally smooth obstruction class $χ(S)$ in a suitably defined cohomology group $H^3_{ss}(G,Z(N))_S$ is defined. It vanishes if and only if ther…
Let $X$ be a locally compact Abelian group, $α_{j}, β_j$ be topological automorphisms of $X$. Let $ξ_1, ξ_2$ be independent random variables with values in $X$ and distributions $μ_j$ with non-vanishing characteristic functions. It is known that if $X$ contains no subgroup topologically isomorphic to the circle group $\mathbb{T}$, then the independence of the linear forms $L_1=α_1ξ_1+α_2ξ_2$ and $L_2=β_1ξ_1+β_2ξ_2$ implies that $μ_j$ are Gaussian distributions. We prove that if $X$ contains no subgroup topologically isomorphic to $\mathbb{T}^2$, then the independence of $L_1$ and $L_2$ implies…
Let $G$ be a group. We denote by $ν(G)$ a certain extension of the non-abelian tensor square $G \otimes G$ by $G \times G$. We prove that if $G$ is a finitely generated group in which the set of all simple tensors $T_{\otimes}(G)$ is finite, then the non-abelian tensor square $G \otimes G$ and the group $ν(G)$ are finite. Moreover, we show that if $G$ is a locally residually finite group in which the set of simple tensors $T_{\otimes}(H)$ is finite for every proper finitely generated subgroup $H$ of $G$, then the group $ν(G)$ is locally finite.
On the torus group, on the group of p-adic integers and on the p-adic solenoid, we give a construction of an arbitrary weakly infinitely divisible probability measure using a random element with values in a product of (possibly infinitely many) subgroups of the real numbers. As a special case of our results, we have a new construction of the Haar measure on the p-adic solenoid.
We prove limit theorems for row sums of a rowwise independent infinitesimal array of random variables with values in a locally compact Abelian group. First we give a proof of Gaiser's theorem, since it does not have an easy access and it is not complete. This theorem gives sufficient conditions for convergence of the row sums, but the limit measure can not have a nondegenerate idempotent factor. Then we prove necessary and sufficient conditions for convergence of the row sums, where the limit measure can be also a nondegenerate Haar measure on a compact subgroup. Finally, we investigate specia…
It is well known that every locally compact abelian group L can be decomposed as L_1 \oplus R^n, where L_1 contains a compact-open subgroup. In this paper, we use this decomposition to study the topological group Aut(L) of automorphisms of L, equipped with the g-topology. We show that Aut(L) is topologically isomorphic to a matrix group with entries from Aut(L_1), Hom(L_1, R^n), Hom(R^n, L_1), and GL_n(R), respectively. It is also shown that the algebraic portion of the decomposition is not specific to locally compact abelian groups, but is also true for objects with a well-behaved decompositi…
We study groups that can be defined as Polish, pro-countable groups, as non-archimedean groups with an invariant metric or as quasi-countable groups, i.e., closed subdirect products of countable, discrete groups, endowed with the product topology. We show, among other results, that for every non-locally compact, abelian quasi-countable group G there exists a closed subgroup L of G, and a closed, non-locally compact subgroup K of G/L which is a direct product of discrete, countable groups. As an application we prove that for every abelian Polish group G of the form H/L, where H,L are closed sub…
We study locally compact groups having all dense subgroups (locally) minimal. We call such groups densely (locally) minimal. In 1972 Prodanov proved that the infinite compact abelian groups having all subgroups minimal are precisely the groups $\mathbb Z_p$ of $p$-adic integers. In [31], we extended Prodanov's theorem to the non-abelian case at several levels. In this paper, we focus on the densely (locally) minimal abelian groups. We prove that in case that a topological abelian group $G$ is either compact or connected locally compact, then $G$ is densely locally minimal if and only if $G$ ei…
Inspired by an extension of Wiener's lemma on the relation of measures $μ$ on the unit circle and their Fourier coefficients $\widehatμ(k_n)$ along subsequences $(k_n)$ of the natural numbers by Cuny, Eisner and Farkas [CEF19, arXiv:1701.00101], we study the validity of the lemma when the Fourier coefficients are weighted by a sequence of probability measures. By using convergence with respect to a filter derived from these measure sequences, we obtain similar results, now also allowing the consideration of locally compact abelian groups other than $\mathbb{T}$ and $\mathbb{R}$. As an applicat…
A locally compact contraction group is a pair (G,f) where G is a locally compact group and f an automorphism of G which is contractive in the sense that the forward orbit under f of each g in G converges to the neutral element e, as n tends to infinity. We show that every surjective, continuous, equivariant homomorphism between locally compact contraction groups admits an equivariant continuous global section. As a consequence, extensions of locally compact contraction groups with abelian kernel can be described by continuous equivariant cohomology. For each prime number p, we use 2-cocycles t…
If G is a locally essential subgroup of a compact abelian group K, then: (i) t(G)=w(G)=w(K), where t(G) is the tightness of G; (ii) if G is radial, then K must be metrizable; (iii) G contains a super-sequence S converging to 0 such that |S|=w(G)=w(K). Items (i)--(iii) hold when G is a dense locally minimal subgroup of K. We show that locally minimal, locally precompact abelian groups of countable tightness are metrizable. In particular, a minimal abelian group of countable tightness is metrizable. This answers a question of O. Okunev posed in 2007. For every uncountable cardinal kappa, we cons…
We prove that two countable locally finite-by-abelian groups G,H endowed with proper left-invariant metrics are coarsely equivalent if and only if their asymptotic dimensions coincide and the groups are either both finitely-generated or both are infinitely generated. On the other hand, we show that each countable group G that coarsely embeds into a countable abelian group is locally nilpotent-by-finite. Moreover, the group G is locally abelian-by-finite if and only if G is undistorted in the sense that G can be written as the union of countably many finitely generated subgroups G_n such that e…
Recently Außenhofer and the author independently have shown that the free abelian topological group $A(\mathbf{s})$ over a convergent sequence $\mathbf{s}$ does not admit the strongest compatible locally quasi-convex group topology that gives the first example of a locally quasi-convex abelian group without a Mackey group topology. In this note we considerably extend this example by showing that the free abelian topological group $A(X)$ over a non-discrete zero-dimensional metrizable space $X$ does not have a Mackey group topology. In particular, for every countable non-discrete metrizable spa…
Using a recent classification of $\operatorname{End}(\mathcal{D}(G))$, we determine a number of properties for $\operatorname{Aut}(\mathcal{D}(G))$, where $\mathcal{D}(G)$ is the Drinfel'd double of a finite group $G$. Furthermore, we completely describe $\operatorname{Aut}(\mathcal{D}(G))$ for all purely non-abelian finite groups $G$. A description of the action of $\operatorname{Aut}(\mathcal{D}(G))$ on $\operatorname{Rep}(\mathcal{D}(G))$ is also given. We are also able to produce a simple proof that $\mathcal{D}(G)\cong\mathcal{D}(H)$ if and only if $G\cong H$, for $G$ and $H$ finite group…
The class of all locally quasi-convex (lqc) abelian groups contains all locally convex vector spaces (lcs) considered as topological groups. Therefore it is natural to extend classical properties of locally convex spaces to this larger class of abelian topological groups. In the present paper we consider the following well known property of lcs: "A metrizable locally convex space carries its Mackey topology ". This claim cannot be extended to lqc-groups in the natural way, as we have recently proved with other coauthors (\cite{AD}, \cite{DMPT}). We say that an abelian group $G$ satisfies the \…
We study locally compact groups having all subgroups minimal. We call such groups hereditarily minimal. In 1972 Prodanov proved that the infinite hereditarily minimal compact abelian groups are precisely the groups $\mathbb Z_p$ of $p$-adic integers. We extend Prodanov's theorem to the non-abelian case at several levels. For infinite hypercentral (in particular, nilpotent) locally compact groups we show that the hereditarily minimal ones remain the same as in the abelian case. On the other hand, we classify completely the locally compact solvable hereditarily minimal groups, showing that in pa…
Let A be a locally compact abelian group, and H a locally compact group acting on A. Let G=HA be the semidirect product. We prove that the pair (G,A) has Kazhdan's Property T if and only if the only countably approximable H-invariant mean on the Borel subsets of the Pontryagin dual of A, supported at the neighbourhood of the trivial character, is the Dirac measure.
In this paper we classify countable locally finite-by-abelian groups up to coarse isomorphism. This classification is derived from a coarse classification of amenable shift-homogeneous metric spaces.
Is every locally compact abelian group which admits a Heisenberg central extension isomorphic to the product of a locally compact abelian group and its Pontryagin dual? An affirmative answer is obtained for all the commonly occurring types of abelian groups having Heisenberg central extensions, including Lie groups and certain finite Cartesian products of local fields and adeles. Furthermore, for these types of groups, it is found that the isomorphism class of the abelian group determines the Heisenberg group up to isomorphism, thereby providing a classification of such Heisenberg groups.
